Local PNP reports 11 Gun Ban violations in Eastern Samar

By Alicia E. Nicart The Philippine National Police (PNP) here has arrested 11 arrested persons for illegal possession of firearms and ammunitions under the Omnibus Election Code. Major Edwin Barbosa, Deputy Provincial Director for Operations said the successful operations are attributed to the vigilance of the policemen in their respective municipal police office(MPOs) from January 13 to April 15. He also said there are so far no report of untoward incident in PNP/ COMELEC/AFP Checkpoints being manned by the composite team in strategic areas of the province. He further reported the following cases in certain municipalities which were already filed against the Gun Ban violators including an Army soldier: Oras(3), Borongan city(3), Maydolong(1), Sulat(1), Giporlos(1), Guiuan(1) Can-avid(1). However, Barbosa cited of two municipal police stations which are now under study due to some reports of illegal gambling, allegedly committed by the assigned PNP personnel in the subject MPO, but he said that the MPOs are currently under investigations, if the report is true or not.

Most Reverend Crispin B. Varquez, Bishop of Borongan is set to lead a candidates forum on April 19, Friday, at the Nativity of Our Lady College Seminary, Baybay Boulevard, this city. The forum which expects the presence of the provincial candidates would be an avenue where the provincial seats aspirants can present their platforms of governance and address a wide range of issues that affect the province. Likewise, it is said that the Provincial Candidates Forum will also help the people of Eastern Samar

in choosing the right leaders for the province come May 13. Information said that after the program preliminaries on Friday, Bishop Varquez will give the overview and rationale of the Forum, while COMELEC Provincial Election Supervisor, Atty. Maria Corazon S. Montallana will give the closing remarks.

Wild birds stop planes take off at the DZR Airport

TACLOBAN CITY Cebu Pacific flight 5J651 suffered a bird strike before taking off at the Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZAR) Airport yesterday morning.
However, none of the passengers was hurt. The Cebu Pacific aircraft was set for takeoff at the DZR Airport runway at 6:25 am when wild ducks surged into its path. Bits and pieces of the birds were seen scattered all over the runway after being sucked in by the two engines. The pilot managed to stop the A320 aircraft safely. The technical crew inspected the
engine for possible damage. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) said Cebu Pacific flight was rescheduled at 5:00 pm yesterday for its flight to Manila. Bird strike incidents is not rare at the DZR Airport. August of last year, engines of a Philippine Airlines commercial plane carrying 94 passengers sucked wild ducks temporarily paralyzing said aircraft. Migratory birds have been giving headaches to airline operators and pilots because of their presence near the runway. The birds are worrisome because of the possibility of a bird strike, when any one of them or part of the flock collides with airplanes flying in and out of the runway. No fatalities have so far been reported in local bird strikes, except for costly maintenance and repairs and cancelled flights, according to PAL. All the other local airplanes have experienced bird strikes over the years, but the damage is often negligible because local birds are smaller and lighter. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says 15% of bird strikes worldwide caused actual damage, which could mean $5 million if an engine is smashed up. In 2008, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) recorded bird hits involving three international air carriers. The first of these accidents was in May 12, 2008 when a Cathay Pacific plane from Hong Kong collided with a bird while landing. All over the country, the record jumped from 42 bird strikes in 2009 to 120 in 2010. Airlines and pilots said

Is the Church in crisis?

TO give a quick, blunt reply, the Church has always been in crisis. Thats its character, it goes with the territory, since it has to deal with all kinds of people, some brilliant and faithful, others not so, etc. That it appears in crisis today is no breaking news. I suspect that the question is raised today because of that survey that reportedly showed dwindling numbers of churchgoers. But I consider that question moot and academic, with hardly any practical use other than to provoke or embarrass some people. Ok, there is some supposedly serious reason why such decline is happening. But thats precisely the reason why the Church continues to be in some trouble. Even with Christ, there already was severe crisis. He had Judas and some Jews pestering him. He was crucified, remember, for carrying out his mission. After him with the Church established, the crisis has not stopped but continues to fester under different forms and ways and in different circumstances. The problem the Church has to contend up to the end of time will be lack of faith and everything that follows it. Try imagining persuading people about a supernaturally mysterious God, about spiritual and supernatural realities like faith, hope and charity, God becomes man who is Christ, the role of the Holy Spirit, the nature and mission of the Church, etc. To top it all, try imagining making people understand about our weakened human condition, the reality of the devil, sin and temptations, and the need for abiding ascetical struggle, the development of virtues, the recourse to the sacraments, etc. But remember Christ and his apostles. Many times, Christ had to scold his apostles for their lack of faith even in the face of the obvious. Such will be our predicament. We just have to learn to live with it, and continue to do something about it, always with the help of grace. Its an exciting life, what we have. The survey, I suspect, was clearly politically motivated. It came out all of a sudden. Ill see if I have enough motive to bother to check who were behind it. It was meant to be like the North Korean threat, to pressure the Church to bend to the preferences of some politicians. Remember that we are in an election campaign season, and the RH issue is kind of hot. Even some clerics put themselves at odds with the official Church stand on it and are twitting and facebooking their questionable views among which is precisely the claim that with the Church position on RH, many people are deserting the churches. Critics of the Church will always exhume past scandals, slamming it with the current ones and even inventing some, to support their claim. Well, we are in this imperfect world. Nothing is new. We just have to try our best to be hopeful and do whatever we can to spread the truth in charity and goodness. As to the survey result that many are deserting the Church, many of my friends echo the same observation that I have. The churches here in the country are filled with people. More Masses are scheduled. The churches have to be expanded. And during big feasts, one has to be blind not to see the tremendous popular piety flooding even the streets. That there are many imperfections in this public display of piety should not surprise us. We just have to look at our individual selves and see how even with our best efforts we are still short of what we ourselves consider to be the ideal Christian life. And try to extrapolate this situation to the whole of society, and, thus, we should not be surprised

The most ephemeral impact is skin infection followed by gastro-intestinal diseases. This contamination was noted following an observation that waterways in the City, which flow constantly down the seas, are turned into dumpsites while residents along creeks and riverbanks construct makeshift toilets directly on top of these bodies of water. The Tacloban City Health Office, in an interview with Leyte Samar Daily Express, declared that beaches in the city are safe for summer recreation. Thus, vacationers have nothing to worry about catching any of the diseases attributed to coliform, e-coli and other similar bacteria while freshening up at the nearby beaches nearby.

Branson Call, in-charged of the Eye department of the Mormon-church charitable organization, during the turn-over ceremony on Monday in the hospital. SPES gives benefit to students

A total of 792 students are benefited from the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) in the province of Eastern Samar. Most students are deployed in the community for employed as street cleaners through the Clean and Green Program of the government, according to Mylene C. Paganos, Labor and Employment Officer of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). Under the SPES, any qualified student aging 15-25 can apply in any government office or agency in the province that offer job opportunities this summer, Paganos said. She added that to qualify, the applicant needs to submit the following requirements : birth certificate from the National Statistics Office (NSO); grades for the second semester or any document as proof of enrollment; certification from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) that one comes from an indigent family and school identification card. The grand-prize winner will receive Php20,000 cash, and three runners-up, Php5,000 each. The contest, which is open now, ends Saturday, May 25, 10:00 P.M. After the brief chase, the law enforcers cornered the vehicle with the suspects, however, managed to elude arrest. Nacar said that an almost two-hour standoff ensued before the driver of the vehicle, Jessie Jackson and his companion, Jeffrey Radomes, yielded to the police authorities and after a city official appeared to negotiate for their surrender.
They were brought to the Calbayog police station but were later released after questioning, Nacar said. Nacar said that based on the report they have received, the incident did not involved any particular politician as earlier mentioned by some media reports. He also said that they have yet to verify if the vehicle where the alleged suspects were on board were fired upon. Petalcorin said that he would ask his elections official in Calbayog to conduct a probe on this incident. Meantime, Nacar said that they are still confident that the conduct of the elections in Samar would still be peaceful as they continue to undertake their security measures like arrest of persons with warrants. These men with outstanding warrant of arrests could be used by some unscrupulous candidates to advance their personal interests, Nacar said.
