plunge in the pool and frolic by the seashore are among the hobbies these days to beat the summer heat. Soaking oneself in cool water or simply gazing at the horizon and the clear blue sky while the skin is kissed by the gentle breeze along the beaches make up the fun stuff while students are on a vacation and adults find time to bond with relatives and friends. The beaches are swarmed by people during summertime, but are they safe for rest and relaxation, particularly those along the shoreline of urbanized localities? Few years back, health authorities warned the public against a high level of coliform bacteria present along the beaches of Tacloban City and nearby environs, and cautioned them from swimming in these contaminated shores to avoid contracting diseases.Residents and tourists persist in their leisure pursuit, oblivious of the ill effect of such impurity. The most ephemeral impact is skin infection followed by gastro-intestinal diseases. This contamination was noted following an observation that waterways in the City, which flow constantly down the seas, are turned into dumpsites while residents along creeks and riverbanks construct makeshift toilets directly on top of these bodies of water. Because of the limited funds of the govern-
ment, we cannot procure certain equipment. We are grateful of your efforts, Dr. de Leon said, admitting the necessity for more private-initiated supports to government-ran hospitals like EVRMC being a teaching and training hospital in the region. Atty. Tecson John Lim, city administrator representing Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez, thanked the two humanitarian organizations for their help, assuring also that the city is working seriously on public-private partnership projects like that of the present initiative happening in EVRMC. We need to support the SUCs nationwide by providing higher subsidies so that all the programs that they intend to implement would be realized. We believe on the capacity of the SUCs here in molding the mind of our students and make them become competitive, he added.
Estrada pointed out that he is also going to file a bill allowing students to take a loan, to help the poor acquire their college education.

along Gomez St. and Rosales Boulevard, where the vehicle was park at around 10 p.m.to arrest the two suspects. But instead of yielding to the law agents, the suspects boarded the vehicle and sped off which resulted to a brief chase, Nacar said.
After the brief chase, the law enforcers cornered the vehicle with the suspects, however, managed to elude arrest. Nacar said that an almost two-hour standoff ensued before the driver of the vehicle, Jessie Jackson and his companion, Jeffrey Radomes, yielded to the police authorities and after a city official appeared to negotiate for their surrender.
They were brought to the Calbayog police station but were later released after questioning, Nacar said. Nacar said that based on the report they have received, the incident did not involved any particular politician as earlier mentioned by some media reports. He also said that they have yet to verify if the vehicle where the alleged suspects were on board were fired upon. Petalcorin said that he would ask his elections official in Calbayog to conduct a probe on this incident. Meantime, Nacar said that they are still confident that the conduct of the elections in Samar would still be peaceful as they continue to undertake their security measures like arrest of persons with warrants. These men with outstanding warrant of arrests could be used by some unscrupulous candidates to advance their personal interests, Nacar said.
Veronico Petalcorin, assistant Comelec regional director, made this assessment in the wake of an incident in Calbayog City, one of the identified areas in Samar under its watch list, last Wednesday night. The peace and order situation in the region remains manageable which means it is still a normal situation
