1. (a) State the reasons for a self exited DC shunt generator to fail to build up voltage, and suggest the necessary modications. (b) Explain the importance of critical eld resistance and how it can be determined. (c) A 4-pole generator having wave-wound armature winding has 48 slots each slot contains 20 conductors. What will be the voltage generated in the machine when driven at 1,500rpm assuming the ux per pole to be 7.0 mWb? [7+3+6] 2. (a) Explain the various methods of speed control of a D.C. Shunt Motor. (b) A 460V d.c. series motor runs at 1000rpm taking a current of 40A. Calculate the speed and percentage change in torque if the load is reduced so that the motor is taking 30A. Total resistance of the armature and eld circuits is 0.8. Assume ux is proportional to the eld current. [8+8] 3. (a) Explain the principle of operation of transformer. Derive its e. m. f. equation. (b) A 1-phase transformer has 180 turns respectively in its secondary and primary windings. The respective resistances are 0.233 and 0.067. Calculate the equivalent resistance of i. the primary in terms of the secondary winding, ii. the secondary in terms of the primary winding, and iii. the total resistance of the transformer in terms of the primary.

4. (a) Dene regulation of a transformer. Derive the expression for the regulation. [2+4] (b) Explain with neat circuit diagrams, the open circuit and short circuit tests to be carried out in the laboratory on a 1.5 kVA, 230 V / 40 V, 50 Hz, 1-phase transformer, for the determination of the parameters of the equivalent circuit. [10] 5. (a) Explain the principle of rotating magnetic eld and hence prove that it is of constant magnitude and rotates at synchronous speed. 6. (a) Explain the tests to be conducted for determining synchronous impedance. (b) A 100KVA, 6.6KV, 3phase star connected synchronous generator has a synchronous reactance of 25 ohm per phase. It supplies full load current at 0.75 p.f lagging and a rated terminal voltage. Compute the terminal voltage for the same excitation when the generator supplies full load current at 0.8 p.f leading. [8+8] 7. (a) A 3-, 6600v; 50Hz; Y connected synchronous motor takes 50 A current. The resistance and synchronous reactance per phase are 1 ohm and 20 respectively. Find the power supplied to the motor and induced e.m.f. for a powerfactor of i. 0.8 lagging and ii. 0.8 leading. (b) Derive expressions for distribution factor and pitch factor. 8.
