Basically everything is the same technology wise and magick exits here but things are run by a monarchy and the states of America divided up between lower royalty to watch over. Authors Notes: I was going to make the titles correct but after looking into royalty and how it worked I decided it was too much like studying and I wanted to get on with the fic. In other words, please excuse any errors although I think most of the heirachy is correct. The King and I Buffy couldn't believe her eyes when she read the letter. "MOM! DAD!" she cried. Her parents came running to see what the fuss was. She showed them the letter. "Oh dear." Said Giles. "They cant make me can they Dad?" asked Buffy. Giles and Joyce shared a look that gave Buffy her answer. "Well I wont do it." She exclaimed running off to her room. Joyce went to run after her but Giles stopped her. "Give her some time." He said evenly. "we'll check this out then go and see if she's OK." Giles had been fearful of this recently. His only hope was that they would slip through the net somehow. He thought himself foolish now for not having prepared Buffy. Joyce nodded. Time was probably a good thing, they couldn't talk to her while she was hysterical anyway. Buffy's tears began to fall but were soon replaced by anger. How dare they. How dare he! I mean there were laws governing freedom of speech and all kinds of other crap. They couldn't force her into an arranged marriage. It wasn't right. A knock sounded at the door. "Come in." said Buffy sitting on the bed. "I'm sorry hunny." Said Joyce. "We checked with Charles and he says it's genuine." "But why do I have to marry him? It's not right. I don't even know him!" "No! No darling. You don't have to marry this man." Buffy looked quizzically at her mother. "I don't? Then what does it mean?" she indicated the letter Giles held. Giles sat on the bed next to her and tried to explain. "It's an old law. Ancient actually. It states that all reigning kings must be married by their 27th birthday. It's so the ruling party has both male and female represented. To ensure balance. And to make sure the king's power doesn't go to his head and he doesn't do anything, um, rash." Buffy nodded, she knew that bit from school. "Well" he continued, "in the event the king isn't married they must hold a series of balls in which all

the single, titled women are "he tried to find a word that would sound demeaning. He failed. " paraded in front of the king so he can choose his bride." "So what happens if he chooses me?" asked Buffy. Her mother and father shared the same look from earlier. "You have to marry him. It's the law." Said Giles, unable to meet his daughters eyes. "Well, I simply wont go then. If I'm not there, he cant choose me." "It's not as simple as that Buffy." Said her mother. "If you don't go it's considered treason." Buffy gasped in shock. "But they wouldn't. Kill me. It's not that bad treason is it?" "Well no," began Giles. "They probably wouldn't impose a death sentence but it is a risk. And one I'm not willing to take. I wont loose you Buffy, even if it is just to prison." Buffy let the horror sink in. She was trapped into this meat market "parade" of flesh for the kings titillation. "It's worth mentioning I think, that if he does choose you, you have no choice. The risk of death is greater if you refuse his proposal at this stage." In anger Buffy picked up toy and threw it. When it fell harmlessly to the floor she picked up vase and received a gratifying crash as it hit the wall. It did nothing for her anger though. "When is it?" she asked coldly. "Um, 4 days," said Giles consulting the letter. Buffy nodded, an idea forming. "We're just barons right? I mean the only people lower than us are lords?" Giles nodded. "Well he wouldn't want me would he, I am so way below him." She smiled. "And by the time I'm ready for the ball, he wont touch me with a barge poll." Her parents looked worriedly at her, then each other. They couldn't let her go too far but between them they should be able to strike a balance.

The night of the ball arrived and in her hotel room Buffy came out of the bathroom to face her parents. They smiled their approval. She wore a long black dress with a slit to the knee, the occasion called for ball gowns, usually in white or pastel. Her hair was down, another etiquette nightmare. For formal occasions like this it should be worn up. And her make up was light. Foundation, mascara and lipstick. She looked acceptable, no one could accuse her outright of thumbing her nose at tradition but they would think her ill mannered and not at all Queen material. Smiling at their success her parents put her in the car that had been sent for her, wishing her luck. At the palace King Angelus was in a mood. He hated this whole thing. Endless women parading in front of him, all wanting his money and the title of queen. Not a brain between them. And this was his 13th night of these balls. He sighed, readied himself for another night of mindless drivel and put on his tux just as Dean knocked to announce the girls were ready. Buffy stood in line next to the other women there. They were all pointing and whispering behind their hands at her. They varied in age from 18 to late 40's. It appeared any single titled lady was in the running,

regardless of age. What's more they all seemed excited to be meeting the king, hoping this was their shot at the throne. "Ladies" called out a doorman. "If you will follow me." The 30 or 40 women all followed him, the whispering falling to low murmur. As they entered the ballroom the doorman took his place beside King Angelus and began announcing people to the King. Buffy figured he was probably more than a doorman then, probably Master of Ceremonies. "This is Lady Mary Harris, daughter to Earl and Lady Harris." He continued to announce each guest to the king. Buffy could hear them but she couldn't yet see them. She craned her neck around the corner to try and see. She let out a small gasp when she saw he king. The photo's in the paper didn't do him justice, he was the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. As she rounded the corner she steeled herself. It didn't matter how sexy he was, she didn't want to marry him. Defiantly not an arranged marriage. She thought of a great line as she moved up the que and kept repeating it to herself as she waited for her turn. Angelus looked each girl over as they curtsied to him. Some he would sleep with, none he wanted to marry. He tried to keep the board look off his face. As the current woman passed he whispered to Dean "How many more?" Dean consulted his list. "Six my lord." As Angelus turned back to face the next woman he spotted one in the line. A small girl with blonde hair. Not much makeup but stunning non the less. And she wasn't looking at him. All the others had. All of them, on every night. This one seemed more content to look at her cuticles though. Dean coughed twice bringing Angelus back to reality. Dean read out the name of the lady in front of him, she curtsied, he bowed slightly, the next one came. He went through the motions with the next two, then it was her turn. Her dress was unconventional but stunning. He held his breath as she approached. Dean read out her name. "Miss Elizabeth Ann Giles. Daughter to baron and baroness Giles." He was caught off guard when she held her hand out. He took it and they shook. "Cute hair." She said. "They told me bedroom hair was in but I didn't really believe it." And with that she smiled and walked on. His gaze followed her. Dean coughed again and presented the remaining women. Buffy sighed with relief as she walked away. She had done it. Smiling she fetched herself a glass of orange juice from the bar and patted her self on the back. A few minutes later a small bell rang and the Master of Ceremonies announced it was time to sit for dinner. Buffy made her way to her designated table. "Excuse me Miss." Came a voice behind her. She turned to face a waiter. "There's been a slight change to the seating arrangements, if you'll follow me please." Buffy smiled, they were obviously moving her to an out of the way table where she wouldn't cause embarrassment. She took her seat at a table to the rear of the hall. Including her there were only five people seated there, not the usual six. Fewer people for her to piss off she supposed. She wondered if the others were rejects too.

"Hi," she said cheerily to the others seated. They looked her up and down then ignored her and went back to talking to each other. "I'm Buffy." She said again as she sat down, ignoring their rudeness. They still didn't respond. "Having fun?" she tried again. Before they could snub her again the ceremonies guy made another announcement. "Please stand for King Angelus." She stood reluctantly trying to see him in the crowd but she was too short. "Elizabeth isn't it?" She turned in shock to see Angelus behind her smirking at her. She almost lost her resolve. "Buffy actually. People call me Buffy." His smirk grew. "How adorable." He then took hold of her chair and invited her to sit. She did. He then took the empty seat beside her. "Be seated." Cried the ceremonies guy again. The four other girls at the table were visibly shocked that he was talking to this lowlife but the didn't say anything. It would be impolite. The starter of soup was served, tomato and red pepper. There was another flavour Buffy couldn't quite identify as well, possibly orange. As they began Angelus started the small talk. "So, where are you from?" he asked Buffy. "I'm from Oregon." Said one of the other girls at the table. Angelus smiled at her but it was a tight smile. "And I'm from Michigan" "I come from Washington state" said the third. Buffy remained quiet. "And you?" he enquired of Buffy. "Sunnydale." "Where's that?" "California. I'm a sun girl me." She said flippantly sipping her soup, she did consider slurping it but her manners were too good to allow her to do that. She would use flippancy to dissuade him. "Is this your first trip to New York?" he asked. Again the other three answered first. He had to coax Buffy again. "Yes. I haven't really travelled much. I'm a country girl me. Home sweet home." "Figures" said one of the other girls. That was a lie, Buffy was very well travelled, through Europe, the USA and especially England, where her dad was from. But she let the girls remark lie. Angelus shot the young woman a glare. "I'm sorry, I forgot your name." He said to her. ""Mairane Hughes, My Lord." She said with a big smile. It was short lived. "Mariane, I wonder if you would consent to moving tables. I don't like hostility when I'm eating." The girls mouth fell open. She pointed to Buffy as if to say she was the rude one but the words wouldn't come. "This way Miss." Said the servant behind her.

Mariane looked to the other girls for support but they didn't give it for fear they would be sent away also. Mariane left and dinner continued. Angelus continued to try and glean information from Buffy but she kept resisting him while the other three girls offered their life stories to him. By desert he was exhausted with effort. "Excuse me." He said and left the table. Buffy breathed a sigh of relief. She did like him, he was sexy, funny, smart. She almost wished she hadn't been so beastly to him. But then she remembered his arrogance. The way he sent Mariane away and that awful, cocky smirk of him. She was glad he had gone. Really she was. Or at least she tried to convince herself of that. Angelus retreated to a room outside the ballroom, beckoning a servant over he said "Find me any information you can on Elizabeth Ann Giles. Also known as Buffy." The servant nodded his consent and left. Angelus paced like a caged lion, the dance was coming next and he had to figure out a way to woo her. He heard the servants clearing the tables and poured him self a drink to help him relax. "Something wrong Master?" asked Dean. "The Buffy girl. She totally blanked me." "Is she to be the one sire?" Angelus looked at dean. He was perceptive. Hardly surprising after working for the family for 20 years. "Yes. She is the one." "Then it hardly matters if she consents or not. It is her duty to marry you." "I'm aware of that." He said sharply. Deal took that as his cue to leave. Angelus resumed pacing. He had never met a girl who could resist him. His first proposal of marriage came when he was 5. A girl at his school after the title of queen even then. No one had ever refused him. He had had many women, none had taken more than a drink to seduce into bed and he considered Buffy's resistance to be an assault on his ego. He wondered if her refusal of him was what attracted him to her. No, he had known she was the one when he saw her in line. This turn of events was just a challenge, he decided. One that would not beat him. She would willingly come to him in marriage eventually. He would stake his thrown on it. Once Angelus left the table the three girls turned on her. The called her all kinds of names, accused her of chasing him away then told her she would never marry Angelus, she was too far below his station. They then left in unison to prepare for the party to follow. As soon as they had left Buffy ran to the toilets. Seeing them deserted she found a stall and began to cry. They were right about her. All the names. She had been a bitch. She had spoilt their chances. She cried softly hoping no one would find her. She heard the main door open and two other girls walked in discussing her. "But what an awful girl. I don't know why she even bothered coming." "Exactly. Just a waste of a good meal if you ask me." "She's from Sunnydale you know."

"Where?" "Exactly!" they both giggled. "And what kind of a name is Buffy. I mean please, it's what you call a horse or a cat not a person." They giggled again. Buffy felt her anger rising. How dare they. Who were they to pass judgement on her. She dried her tears, checked her makeup hadn't run then proceeded out into the lobby of the toilets. Both girls instantly shut up when they saw her. "You know, it's funny how he didn't sit at your table isn't it." She said applying more lipstick in the mirror. "maybe it's because you look like the horses I'm names after. And please, all that makeup? What'd you use, a shovel? It's just drawing attention to your ugliness." And with that she turned and left them speechless. Angelus was singled as she left the toilets and he entered the main hall. The Master of Ceremonies asked for quiet and Angelus joined him to make his speech. "Ladies, thank you for coming tonight. Unfortunately for most of you it's been a wasted evening because I've found my bride." At this point a servant took Buffy's elbow and steered her to the front of the crowd. "May I present to you my future bride, Miss Buffy Giles." He held his hand out to her. She smiled as she went up to the stage with him. The looks of shock on the guests faces was priceless. She spotted the two from the toilets and grinned at them, they didn't respond. Once on stage with Angelus she put her arm around him and let him kiss her. She almost went weak when he kissed her, so soft and tender but underlayed with hidden passion. He kept her upright with his arm around her. The Master of Ceremonies spoke up again saying. "If you would all charge your glasses. To King Angelus and his future wife Miss Buffy Giles." The toast from the crowd was half hearted but she didn't care. "Now," said Angelus, addressing the crowd again. "Please stay and enjoy the party, my beloved and I have other matters to deal with." With that they turned, arms around each other and headed out of the ballroom. Once free of prying eyes Buffy pushed him away. He looked shocked. "What kind of game are you playing?" he asked angrily. "I'm not. You choose me, fine, I'll marry you. I'll be the dutiful wife, the beloved queen but I wont love you and I'll never sleep with you. You arrogantly think you own everyone in the kingdom don't you? Well you don't own me and you never will." With that she spun on her heals and headed for her car. "I'll send the car to pick you up tomorrow. The law demands you stay at the palace now we're engaged." "We are not engaged." She called back. Angelus smiled. She was still a challenge. But he was up to it. And she was perfect. Beautiful, intelligent and with a mind of her own. And she didn't want him for who he was. When she fell in love with him it would he with him, not his title. He smiled as he went to bed.

Buffy was inconsolable. She sobbed on her parents bed as they tried to understand what had happened, where the plan all went so wrong. Gradually she calmed down and explained as much as she could. She didn't really understand it herself. "Buffy," began Giles. "Is there any way you could love him?" he hated the thought she would be in a loveless marriage. "I... No... Maybe. I don't know." She sobbed again. Eventually they calmed her down and settled her into bed. They left her there to sleep and went to talk in the other room. "We need Willow and Xander." Said Joyce. Giles looked at her. Yes, her friends would be of help right now. "I'll call them, get them to take an overnight flight." Joyce nodded and Giles made the call. Buffy woke the next morning to a knock on the door. "ugh. Come in." she said rousing herself from sleep. "Hey Buffy" said Willow and Xander as they entered. "Guys! Oh, it's so great to see you." They went over and hugger her. "What are you doing here?" "Your dad called, said you needed us." "So you came all this way. Thank you." When they broke the hug Buffy asked "So, how much do you know?" "All of it." Said Willow. "Your Mom explained things before we woke you." They spoke for an hour or so getting more details from Buffy and eventually they managed to make her smile. Then laugh. The knock at the door came at 11am. Buffy was packed and waiting, as were Willow and Xander. She opened the door. "We're ready" she smiled at the driver. "We? I'm only supposed to collect Buffy Giles." They had anticipated this and found a way around it. "I'm Buffy. These are my servants. Willow, my lady in waiting and Alexander, my private secretary." The driver was taken aback but didn't say anything. Angelus might be harder to convince. Angelus watched from his window as the car pulled up. He smiled. She was on his turf now. He would have her in no time. His smile faltered when he saw three people emerge from the car. What kind of game was that? He decided to find out. "Buffy, my love." He said as he met her in the front hall. He went to kiss her but she shied away. "I didn't know the invitation was for three. I'm not sure we have room." "Please! This castle for gods sake, there's room. And you don't honestly expect me to travel without my lady in waiting and my secretary do you?"

He had her there. If you invited royalty you also invited their entourage. Even if the family were only Barons. He doubted these were actual employees, from the information his servants had gathered he assumed they were Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, her best friends. He let it pass. They wouldn't get in his way. "I'll have the housekeeper make up extra rooms for you two. Buffy, if you follow me I'll show you to your room." Buffy followed but called to the others "Come on guys." They followed also. Buffy gasped when she saw her room. It was fantastic. To the far wall stood a four poster bed with a dark red and ivory spread. The walls were light beige and adorned with fantastic artwork. Mostly modern but some older works also. A huge window was on the wall to the left of the door with a view of the grounds and an old mahogany desk underneath it. To the right was a bathroom. "It's beautiful." She exclaimed. Then a thought occurred to her. "It isn't your room is it?" "No, my room is next door." He had considered putting her in his room but dismissed the idea thinking it would only serve to alienate her. "Check the closets." He urged. She opened them to find a selection of dresses. "They're all your size." He informed her. She loved the dresses they were beautiful but he was controlling her. She fixed his with an icy stare. "So I'm just some Barbie doll you can dress up now? If you really wanted me to be happy you would have shipped my clothes here." "I have. They should arrive around 3pm along with your other personal effects. Until then, if you need anything just ask. One of the servants will fetch it for you." That took her back. He had done a nice thing for her. Until she thought of someone going through her stuff. "So there are total strangers going through my room?" she asked horrified. "No. I asked your housekeeper to do it. I thought you'd be more comfortable with that." "Oh. Thank you." OK, he'd won this battle but he'd loose the next. "I'll leave you to settle in. Xander, Willow, if you follow me I'll have the house keeper show you to your rooms." They followed him telling Buffy they'd be back soon. "oh, and Buffy." Angelus turned back to her. She looked up at him. "Lunch is at 1pm. I'd be honoured if you'd join me." "Thanks but I don't really feel like anything. Not hungry." "He shrugged as though it meant nothing. "Well if you change your mind it's in the dining room, the small one. One of the servants will show you the way." "Thanks but no. I'm fine." Angelus left with her friends in tow. Not until after she unpacked her case did she realise he'd used their real names. She hadn't told him their names. Buffy spent the next week avoiding Angelus at all costs. He tried to corner her a few times but she dodged his kisses, refused his invitations and ran when all else failed. Angelus was growing exasperated. He had a ball coming up this weekend to celebrate the engagement and

she had to be there. Buffy arrived back at her room to find an envelope taped to the door. She opened it and read it aloud to her friends. "Your presence is necessary at the Engagement ball on Saturday. Be there. I'll send Christine to design a dress for you. Signed A." Buffy was fuming. BE THERE! Arrogant prick! "Excuse me" she said to her friends and stormed off down the hall. They followed her. "Marie!" called Buffy going down the stairs. "Marie!" "Buffy, what is it?" said Marie emerging from the kitchen. "Where is he?" "Angelus? He's in the basement." "Thank you." She stormed off to the basement. The door was open and before she could storm in she spotted him working out. He was bare chested and punching a bag. Her breath caught in her throat. He turned to her. "Buffy." He smiled. "What the hell is this?" She said descending the steps and shaking the letter at him. "What does it look like?" "You arrogant piece of shit! BE THERE! I am not yours to order round." She tore up the letter and threw it at him then stormed out. Seeing her friends waiting in the hall she suggested they go for a walk in the grounds to calm her down. Arriving back at her room there was another note waiting. She tore it off the door and ripped it open. It said "Dear Buffy. I would be honoured if you would attend the engagement ball on Saturday Night with me. And if it's alright with you I have asked Christine to design a dress that will do justice to your beauty. If not you will still look stunning in jeans. Yours A" Now that was the kind of invitation Buffy liked. She handed it to Willow and Xander so they could see it. The King and I Part 2 Buffy called Christine the same day and she was over by lunchtime with a selection of dresses and fabrics. "Well, aren't you a pretty one" she said greeting Buffy with a wide smile. "My dress's gonna look 10 times better than they are on you honey." Buffy instantly warmed to her. She was a plump black lady with a slight southern drawl to her accent. "Now," she said escorting Buffy into a side room of the palace. "You take a peak at these designs and tell he

what tickles your fancy. I'll just pop and unload the dresses from the van." Buffy sat in one of the chairs and looked through the sketches. By the time Christine returned with a rail of dresses she had selected three sketches. "Well, pretty and good taste" said Christine looking at the sketched Buffy had chosen. "OK, this first one would beeee" she paused as she looked through the dresses on the rail. "Aha! Got ya. OK honey. Go behind that partition and try it on." Buffy did as she was told while Christine unloaded a full length mirror from the end of the dress rail. "And remember," she called to Buffy. "It can be any colour you want, doesn't have to be that one." "Thanks Christine." Buffy called back. "Call me Chris. Christine makes me sound all lady like and I ain't nothin' like a lady." "Don't sell yourself short." Called Buffy. "But honey, I am short, and fat. No, you got's to have real class to be a lady like you do." "But that's not true Chris. I don't have class. My home town is very small. We didn't even have any servants, just one part time cleaner. We defiantly aren't what you'd call classy." Buffy walked out from the partition in the dress. Chris smiled at her like a mother. "Now see, that's the kind of class I mean. Title, money, all that crap don't come into it. Look at you. Head held high, back straight, good heart. That's what I call class baby and you got it in shovel fulls." Buffy blushed at the complement. "Thanks." Chris looked around for the fabric samples she had brought. "Damn it, must have left them in the van. Well you take a look at yourself in the dress and I'll be back in a jiffy." With that she was gone. Buffy walked to the mirror and looked at herself. The dress was lovely. Red fabric with a low cut V neckline, spaghetti straps and a full skirt. She turned in front of the mirror and watched it fan out around her. Then she felt him watching her. She could always feel his eyes on her. "Most people knock. Didn't your mother teach your it's rude to stare." She turned to the doorway to face him. He continued staring. "Stop it. It's unnerving." "But your so beautiful I cant help it." He replied. "Flattery will get you, well pretty much anywhere." She giggled in reply. "So, you like it?" "I love it. Is it the one your going to wear?" "I haven't decided yet. Chris has just gone to collect something from the van before I try the others on." "Go with that one. The first choice is usually the right one." "I'll see," she said back, both liking the direction the conversation was taking and scared by it. "Look Buffy." He began, "I have people coming in for the ball from tomorrow onwards. This is our last night alone for a while so I wondered if you would have dinner with me tonight." She was tempted. Sorely tempted but she couldn't find the words to say yes. Taking her hesitancy as a refusal he continued. "Your friends are welcome too if they'd like to come." "I... Thank you. We'd love to have dinner with you."

He smiled though it was a tight smile. He didn't want her friends there but if she wanted them there, so be it. "Until tonight then." "Until tonight." Buffy repeated as he left. She couldn't believe what she had done. She had accepted a date with him. She wasn't supposed to do that. But oh! How good he looked. And he had been so nice to her today. She was still deciding if she had made the right decision when Chris returned. The rest of the afternoon was spent looking at the other dresses and the fabric samples. She did select the first dress in the end but in an emerald green which Chris said would bring out her eyes. Buffy was nervous as she made her way to the dining hall. She was late and she had told the others to go without her. As she entered the room she saw they were deep in conversation. Angelus could feel her as she walked in but he didn't look up. Two could play hard to get. "Hi, sorry I'm late." She said. "Buffy," he said as if just noticing her. "Please, take a seat." She did and one of the servants poured her a glass of wine. "Oh, no." said Buffy covering the glass. "Not allowed to drink, not 21 yet." "Wouldn't worry about it." Said Angelus. "Being the king means it's only illegal if I say so. And I say drink." There it was again, that arrogance. Buffy let it pass though for fear of spoiling the evening. The first course was served and the conversation resumed. Angelus had been talking to Willow about her magick. Willow it appeared was playing her skills down, only telling Angelus of her first forays into magick and making them sound recent. Buffy assumed than meant she didn't entirely trust Angelus yet either. As the evening wore on she and Xander were left more and more out of the conversation. Angelus and willow covered art, computers, play writes and were currently discussing the history of the castle. "Would you like a tour tomorrow perhaps?" he asked Willow. "Would I? That'd be great. I bet there's a whole bunch of cool stuff gone on here." Buffy was growing angrier by the second. He was inviting her friend out! WILLOW! Why was she here in the first place he was going to date other people. "Uh, is that invitation just for one," piped up Xander. Buffy was relieved, he's saved her the trouble. "Um. Well no, you two are welcome to join us. I just didn't think it would be your kind of thing." Buffy smiled sarcastically at him. "No, your right. Playing dress up is all I like doing!" The tone was sweet but the words biting. "I'm sorry. Have I offended you Buffy?" he asked innocently. She wanted to scream "How dare you!" But she didn't. "No, I'm quite alright thank you. I have plans in the morning anyway." As the servants came to clean away the dishes Buffy rose to help. Angelus ordered her to sit. "What? I was only helping." "It's not your place to help. It's their job."

"So what? You've never washed a dish before? Or made a meal?" she asked incredulously. "No. And before you go getting all high and mighty on me just remember they've been making your meals too for the past week." "No, they haven't." "You mean to say you haven't eaten since you arrived here?" "No. I've eaten. In the kitchen. Do you know where that is? Well if you go there they have all kinds of food you can make into dishes to eat." Angelus wasn't amused. He had assumed when she had refused his dinner invitations she was having food brought to her room. To have the future queen serving herself was unseemly. He let it ride though sensing she was looking for him to bite. "Well, thank you all for a lovely evening but I have work to do." And with that Angelus left. The gang were left staring at each other across the table. Next morning Buffy rose early. She had plans. Upon her arrival in the kitchen she greeted Maria as she always did and they chatted as they always did. Maria was head housekeeper which meant she looked after the staff and cooked most of the meals. Buffy decided now would be a good time to bring up her plan. "Oh, by the way, would you mind not serving Angelus his breakfast this morning? It's just I have a surprise for him." Maria looked a bit shocked but agreed. She was hoping Buffy and Angelus could make things work and if Buffy had a surprise for Angelus, Maria hoped it meant they were getting closer. "And when he calls down I'll get it, just give us some room if your wouldn't mind." "Not a problem" Maria smiled. It was about half an hour later when Angelus called down from his room to find out where his breakfast was. Buffy answered and calmly informed him if he wanted it he'd have to come get it. As she waited for him she washed her own breakfast bowl up. She felt him enter and come to stand behind her at the sink. He took a deep breath and ran his hands through her hair. "You have beautiful hair." "Thank you." "Look at me." She didn't move. "I said look at me. Please." Buffy turned to face him holding her foamy hands away from him. She expected him to be angry but he just looked amused. "So, the point of this little lesson was to teach me where the kitchen is?" he asked. Buffy wasn't sure what came over her but she replied. "Well that was one reason." "And the other?"

"This!" and she dabbed some foam on his nose and giggled. He leaned in to her, rubbing his nose with her, sharing the bubbles. "You're going to pay for that." He said seductively. "I am?" she asked innocently. He nodded. "Well," she reached a hand around behind her. "If I'm going to pay for that I might as well pay for this too!" and she put an even bigger pile of bubbles on his head. Splashing his shirt in the process caused him to scoot back a few steps. His look was still playful and Buffy took off to the other side of the table as he reached for some bubbles himself. "Come on Buff. Take it like a man." He said brandishing the bubbles at her. "I don't think so." She said ready to run the opposite way to him when he made his move. He surprised her but vaulting over the table instead and Buffy took off. He soon caught her though and brought her down to the floor. Seeing he no longer had any bubbles left to torture her with he said. "So, what do I do with you now?" "This." Said Buffy as they wrestled on the floor. Eventually Angelus gained the upper hand and had Buffy's arms pinned above her head. They were giggling like school kids when he turned serious. Moving his face closer to hers, he kissed her. Gently at first then slowly the kiss grew more passionate. Needful. Angelus released her hands which she wrapped around his neck as she kissed him back. When they broke the kiss she opened her eyes and stared into that smirk again. The one that said he'd won. "I have to go." said Buffy pushing him away and running from the kitchen. Angelus was left to stare after her wondering what had gone wrong this time. Buffy retreated to her room a mass of contradictions. She had enjoyed the kiss yet thought it was bad, Wrong kind of bad. She liked him yet she hated him. She sat by her window playing recent events over in her mind. She had no idea how long she had been sitting there when she saw Angelus and Willow walking through the grounds. Obviously the tour she had been invited on. Buffy wished she had gone. She was also glad she hadn't. She banged her hand down on the window sill in frustration. This shouldn't be so difficult!!!!!!!! She should know how she felt. She was 20 for Christ sakes. Time to take control of her life and work out her feelings. Just as she decided she hated him she saw Willow laugh, he had obviously made a joke and jealousy clouded her thoughts once more. Just then she noticed a car arrive heading for the house. This must be one of the guests Angelus had said was coming. With nothing better to do she decided to meet them and hurried down to the lobby. Angelus also saw the car arrive and went to great it's occupant. "OZ!" he said as a young red haired man got out of the car. Oz smiled, obviously pleased to see Angelus. They hugged briefly. "Oz, I'd like you to meet Willow. Willow this is an old friend of mine, Earl Daniel Ozborne, also known as Oz."

Willow shook his hand and smiled sweetly. Words failed her as she looked at him. She just hoped she didn't appear too much of a geek. "Where's your mother?" asked Angelus. Since his father died Oz generally took her with him. "Ill. Came on suddenly. Left her with her sister. She's in good hands." "Glad to hear it." Angelus smiled and called for a servant to take Oz's bags. It had been too long since they had seen each other and both were glad to be there. As they entered the lobby of the castle Angelus seemed to forget about Willow. Oz didn't though. He kept casting glances back her way as she trailed behind them. "Buffy" said Angelus as he saw her coming down the stairs. "I'd like you to meet a friend of mine. Oz, this is Buffy, my fiance. Buffy this is Oz, an old friend." Buffy shook his hand and said. "Hi, nice to meet you but I'm not marrying him." And with that she left them. "On your way to the kitchen my love? After some scraps? You know those are only for the poor people don't you?" Buffy's face turned crimson at his humiliating remarks but she kept walking. Now her mind was made up. Hated him. Pure and simple. Angelus turned away from the retreating form of Buffy and asked Oz to join him in a drink. Willow took the opportunity to follow her friend. She found her in the kitchen with a big tub of ice cream and spoon. "Rough day?" Willow asked. "The roughest." Buffy pulled out a spoon and passed it to willow and they shared the ice cream. "But enough about me." Said Buffy. "I saw you checking out the hottie!" Willow blushed. "Was it that obvious." "No, Not as all Will. You were very discrete, honestly. If I hadn't known you all my life I'd just think that guy had a really big mole on his butt you were checking out." Willow playfully slapped her arm. "Stop it!". "I'm sorry Will. Couldn't help it. So you like him huh?" "Well, he is kinda cute." "Sure is." "He'd never want me though. He's some kind of earl or duke or something." "Hey! He'd be lucky to have you and don't you forget it." Willow smiled at her friend but didn't really believe her. Buffy decided it was time for some matchmaking. Oz and Angelus retreated to the drawing room and sat with glasses of scotch. "Nice Girl." Said Oz. "Buffy? She's OK I guess." Grumbled Angelus. His lack of progress was getting to him. He explained the situation to Oz.

"Big Problem." He agreed "Any advice?" Angelus asked. He went to few people for advice. Oz was one of the few. "I'd say be nice. Don't snap like you did out there. She's scared. She's 20, forced into an arranged marriage and miles away from her family. Give her time. And. Be. Nice." For Oz that was a speech of epic proportions and Angelus listened carefully. "She just knows how to play me. It gets to me. Maybe I should have chosen one of the more attractive air heads instead." "They wouldn't make you happy." Angelus nodded. He was right, they wouldn't make him happy. Only Buffy could do that. When she smiled at him his world was bathed in sunlight. When she shouted he wanted to strangle someone. When Angelus had been quiet for a while oz asked "So who's this Willow?" "Her? She's a friend of Buffy's." "Oh." They sat in silence the rest of the time, each thinking of a different woman. Buffy was sitting alone in her room watching some trashy film when she heard a knock on the door. She opened it to find no one there but a food tray outside the door with a plate, 1 red rose and a note. She brought it in the room and laid it on the bed. She took the cover off the plate to see a toasted cheese sandwich. Puzzled she opened the note. It said "I'm truly sorry for my comments earlier. I know this isn't much but it's the best I can do. Maybe one day you can teach me how to make something nicer, Love A xxx" Buffy was almost moved to tears. This was the first nice thing he had done for her. Everything else he'd sent someone else to do, he'd just ordered it to be done. And he's signed it love. Did he love her? She didn't dare hope it. She sat back on the bed with her rose and sandwich and resumed watching the movie. A love story which did little to take her mind of Angelus. Tomorrow she'd thank him. Nicely. Buffy rose early, she had matchmaking plans to make. Her first visit was to the kitchen. Marie knew everything and was willing to tell Buffy most of it. She learned that Angelus was working all morning but was free in the afternoon. Oz was probably going to be in the library practising his music. That's where he'd be found on every other visit and Maria saw no reason for that to change this time. In the afternoon they were going to play tennis together. Marie knew this because Angelus had asked for his tennis whites to be cleaned and washed. Buffy thanked her and went to find Willow. Willow and Buffy approached the library quietly whispering to each other. At the door they could hear a

guitar. He was there alright. Then entered quietly and listened for a while before he noticed them. "Oh, sorry. I didn't realise people ever used this room." Oz said. "I'll leave you to it." "No," said Buffy. "Please don't. It was lovely what you were playing. Can you play something else?" "Sure. I guess." Oz sat down again and played another tune. Willow was mesmerised and Buffy decided it was time to make her move. "Oh my god would you look at that." She exclaimed. "I almost forgot Chris is coming back today for a fitting. I have to go. Sorry." And she left the library before either could say a word in protest. Willow smiled at Oz. "Sorry, she's kind of weird like that." "No, it's fine." "How long have you been playing?" Oz and Will continued talking and when Buffy checked on then through the window an hour later willow was sitting on Oz's lap as he gave her a guitar lesson. She smiled. One down, 2 to go. It was noon and she's searched everywhere for Angelus, she just couldn't find him. She sat on the stairs in the main house despondent. She couldn't even thank him. He probably thought she was being stuck up. Then she heard the faint sounds. Like a punching bag. The basement! She ran to the door and watched him through the crack. There he was again, working off the stresses of the day. She knew how hard he worked from the staff. Well he did run a while country so she shouldn't be surprised. And yet he'd found the time to make her a sandwich. Wasn't much but when you considered the man it seemed an awful lot. But working out like this didn't seem to her to be a good way to relax. She retreated to the kitchen. "Knock knock." Said Buffy as she opened the basement door. Angelus turned to look at her. "Thought you could use this" she said coming down the steps and offering him the glass of chilled water. "Thanks." "Tough day?" "Average I suppose." "Wanna tell me about it?" "Don't concern yourself. It's not your problem." Buffy sat on the steps, about 5 from the floor and said. "Sit." Pointing to a lower step. "Buff I'm kinda" "SIT" He did. He sat on the 3rd step so his back was to her.

"Let me see if I can help." She said as she began to massage his shoulders, a trick she'd learnt as a cheerleader. He was very tense and she worked to release the knots from his shoulders and back. Angelus leaned his head back and enjoyed the sensations. Buffy had a hard time keeping her mind on the job. He was so handsome and here she was touching him. OK, he was sweaty and gross but to her that made him even more attractive. Needing to get closer to do his lower back she moved down a step and placed her legs either side of him. The importance of that move was lost on neither of them. Neither spoke as she worked, each just enjoyed it. When she'd finished she put her arms around him and rested her head on his shoulder. "Thank you." He said softly. Buffy smiled and kissed his shoulder as a "your welcome." Angelus decided this wasn't enough, he turned, picked Buffy up and lay her on his lap, she curled into him, resting her head on his chest. He couldn't let her get away with that. He tilted her head up and kissed her. Passionately, winding his fingers in her hair. She kissed him back to. Her heart was beating 10 to the dozen, she was thrilled to be here and excited, But also scared, very scared. She carried on regardless. Angelus moved his hand from her thigh to her breast, gently massaging it through the material of her dress. She moaned as he did this. He went to put his hand inside her dress but her stopped him. They continued kissing. He tried again to put his hand down her dress. Again she stopped him. This time she pulled away. "Don't." was all she said as she carried on the kiss. Angelus didn't want to stop at kissing. He wanted her. All of her. He tried again. Buffy roughly pushed him away and stood up. "Last time I looked No still meant No in this country." She said angrily. "Aww, come on Buff, it's not like your some prissy virgin. Get over it!" The words stung Buffy like he couldn't imagine and rather than let him see the tears she pushed past him and ran from the basement. "Buffy. BUFFY!" he called after her. She didn't heed his calls.

The King and I Part 3 Alone in her room Buffy's tears slowly dried. She tried to think rationally about things. He couldn't have known she was a virgin. It wasn't like she advertised the fact. But she was, and she was saving herself. Not for marriage but just for the right person. She wasn't sure Angelus was the right person. She wasn't a prude but she had never gone further than kissing with the boys back home. Her parents had raised her to be proud of her body and with that came respecting it. No way was she going to let him just fondle her. But what would happen if she did fall for him. Well, lets face it she had already fallen. So what happened when she wanted to take things further. She'd have to tell him. And he would laugh at her. Buffy the stooped, hick virgin with archaic virtues and morals.

She didn't know what to do. Just then Willow knocked. Buffy checked her appearance then called for her to come in. "Hi." Smiled Buffy in her best 'I'm fine' voice. Willow didn't bite. "What's wrong?" "Nothing. Now tell me all about Oz. I want to know everything." "Nu uh. Not until you tell me what's bothering you." Buffy took a deep breath and told her. Willow understood perfectly. She was in the same situation and the older she got the more foolish she felt when with a guy. Unfortunately she had no words of wisdom to offer so she just sympathised. When they could sympathise no more, Buffy began pumping for information on Oz. "He's lovely. He like sat me on his knee and tried to teach me a few chords. And he's so nice. We talked for like two hours Buffy. I really like him." "Did he say anything? Like he wants to see you again?" "Well he said see you around as we left but that was it." 'Right' thought Buffy. 'time for the third task of the day.' She checked her watch. 1.50 pm. Time to change. Maria called up to Buffy's room at 2.10 to tell her Oz and Angelus had left for the tennis court. "We're up." Said Buffy to Willow and they left. Buffy repeating willow's advice to herself not to let Angelus words get to her. And Buffy didn't. She had other things to worry about now. As Angelus was about to make his first serve he was surprised to see Buffy and Willow approaching in tennis whites. "Mind if we make this doubles?" asked Buffy. The guys looked at each other, each silently thinking it was an excellent idea since it would give them a chance to check the girls out in skimpy clothing. Neither said that though, they just shrugged and said "sure," in unison. The pairings were easy, Oz and Willow, Buffy and angelus. Angelus served first again so Buffy went to the mid line. Angelus found it hard to concentrate as Buffy bent forward ready for the return shot. He had never seen so much of her before. And what he saw was no disappointment. "Yo, you gonna serve Angelus?" asked Oz. Angleus realised unless he wanted to play with a raging hard-on he'd better try and ignore Buffy. He served. The match was pretty even. Oz found concentrating difficult too with Willow so close but the girls kept the match going. The final score was Set to Oz and Willow, 6 games to 4. They high fived each other as congratulations on

their win. "So, How bout girls verses boys Now?" asked Buffy. She really wanted to whoop Angelus ass. "OK," said Angelus. "But prepare to loose." "In your dreams King Boy!" retorted Buffy. The scene was set, this was about pride now. Neither wanted to loose to the other and the tension on the court increased. "Are you sure you want to do this?" Willow quietly asked of Buffy. "I mean he's probably had private lessons or something since he was able to hold a racquet." "Relax Will. Neither of the boys are up to a good game. Your just too attractive for them to concentrate properly." Buffy gave Willow a wink. "Shut up! I'm not the one who suggested this. And if you loose, your on your own." "Got it." To the boys Buffy called. "You want to serve first?" "No, you two go. You need the advantage." Smirked Angelus. Buffy was determined to wipe that smirk off his face. The game was mainly between Buffy and Angelus, Willow and Oz just stood there pretty much. When the score was 6 games to 5 Willow suggested they have a break for a drink. Angelus and Buffy weren't keen, Buffy hoped to win the next game and beat Angelus. Angelus hoped to win the next two. But both were hot and agreed. Willow handed out bottles of water out from the icebox that Angelus and Oz brought. Buffy gulped hers down, spilling most of it. "God, I didn't realise how hot I was." She panted. Angelus saw her drink. He also saw how the water ran down her chin, making her top see through where it hit. He unscrew the cap on his water bottle and as she took another long drink he poured it over her shoulder, down her front. Buffy gasped as the freezing water hit her and turned to face her attacker. "Oh, you are SO dead." She said reaching for another bottle. Angelus took off before she could splash him. Buffy gave chase. She was faster than Angelus anticipated and he had to run full pelt to stop her catching him. Buffy began to slow, winded. When she stopped she panted. "OK, enough. Peace?" she held out her hand. Angelus expected a double cross and warily approached her. She made no move to attack so they shook hands. "Sucker!" said Buffy splashing the contents of the bottle at him. Now it was Angelus's turn to chase. Buffy knew he would catch her but she had something else in mind. She veered off to the house and grabbed the hose. As Angelus approached she managed to turn it on and doused him. Already soaked through Angelus continued through the hose spray after his quarry. Buffy squealed as he came closer, directing the water more accurately at him. Angleus was undeterred and as Buffy dropped the hose to try and run again he caught her and held her around her waist. "Where do you think your going?" he asked. Buffy struggled against him, trying to get free. "Well you started it." She replied giggling. "That I did. So now I'll finish it." He moved his face down to hers, Buffy closed her eyes in anticipation of the

kiss. She gasped again as Angelus quickly retrieved the hose from the ground and soaked her while holding her to him. "you bastard," she said playfully punching his chest. Seeing only one way out of the hose she pulled Angelus's head down to hers and kissed him deeply. Angelus soon forgot the hose and let it fall to the ground again. He was lost in the embrace of his Buffy. Oz and Willow Came upon the couple. "So," began Oz. "Who's up for a steam?" "Count me in." replied Willow. Buffy and Angelus separated from each other reluctantly. "Why not." Said Buffy and Oz lead the way to the steam room. The girls showered and put bathing suits on the headed for the steam room. Oz and Angelus sat on opposite sides and the girls went to their respective 'partners'. They chatted informally until Buffy exclaimed it was too hot for her and asked if there was a pool. Angelus agreed he could use a dip and they left Oz and Willow to it. "Not exactly subtle are you?" said Angelus as he lead the way. "I don't see you complaining." Retorted Buffy. Angelus shrugged, she was right he wasn't complaining. Time alone with Buffy was just what he wanted and he knew Oz had a thing for Willow. "Hey, you want pool or Jacuzzi?" asked Angelus. "Ooh, toughie." Said Buffy playfully. "Jacuzzi." She decided. "In here." He held the door open for her The Jacuzzi was in a small sun room with a view of the rear grounds. Buffy went to get into the Jacuzzi but before she did turned to Angelus. "No funny stuff OK? I mean it." Angelus nodded his consent. She was warming to him which was enough for now. Buffy and Angelus stepped into the Jacuzzi and Angelus used a control panel by the side to turn the bubbles on. Buffy smiled as they began, enjoying the sensation. Angelus watched her from the other side, enjoying her smile. They were interrupted by a knock on the door. One of Angelus's servants entered and left a tray of champagne and strawberries. Angelus thanked him and the servant left. "Cool." Said Buffy. Angelus uncorked the champagne and poured two glasses. "How'd he know to do that?" Buffy asked regarding the champagne. "There's a button on here." Said Angelus pointing to the control panel. "red means champagne and strawberries." Buffy's smile faltered slightly. This wasn't the first time he had done this. She told herself she was stupid to think it was and tried to keep the smile in place. As Angelus handed her a glass she realised this was the perfect time to get the information she wanted. A few more glasses of champagne and he'd be ready to spill.

They chatted politely and Buffy moved round to Angelus's side of the Jacuzzi. She topped his glass up frequently but kept hers behind him so he couldn't see that she wasn't drinking much. Soon she felt able to ask. "So, I'm not the first girl you've brought here am I?" she asked keeping the tone light. "What makes you say that?" "The buttons on the control panel. If it wasn't something you did regularly they wouldn't be there." Angelus sighed. He didn't want to get into the ex's talk but he supposed he had to at some point. "No, your not the first." He said simply. She cuddled into him, not wanting him to see her face. "So, how many girlfriends have you had?" "Lots. Why is this important?" "It's not. Just curious." She replied lightly. The look on her face was anything but light though. "So come on, spill. Tell me. Or is it some big secret?" "To be honest Buffy I couldn't count. It's not like I've been keeping score." "But there have been lots right?" "Yes," he sighed. "Were they good?" "What?" "In bed. Were these women good?" "I suppose some were. Some less so. Why?" "No reason. So how old were you when... You know?" "Young." "So, have you ever, like..." "What?" "Had a... You know, a virgin." She bit her lip waiting for the answer. "Why?" he asked, curious as the intent of this line of questioning. "Well I mean is it a challenge to have a virgin or is it bad 'cos they don't know what to do?" "Neither really. Look, Buffy, none of those women meant anything to me. I swear." He titled her head up so he could look at her face. Tears shined in her eyes. Buffy had to know something before she told him. "Do you love me?" Angelus couldn't answer. He had never said those words to anyone before and as he tried he choked on them. To say it would be to admit it to himself. He wasn't ready for that. And he would be opening himself up to her so she could hurt him. Buffy took his hesitancy as a no. "Got it." She said rising from the Jacuzzi. As she reached the door she turned to him. "Why would you marry someone you didn't love? You must be one fucked up individual." And she left.

The look of contempt on her face with that last comment left Angelus reeling. First he was hurt she would say something like that. And the strong language proved to him just how strong her feelings on this issue were. But slowly the hurt turned to anger. Who the hell did she think she was to judge him. He was the most powerful man in America and no 20 year old kid was going to pop psyche him into feeling bad. Determined to have it out with her once and for all he also got out and went to find her. As Buffy passed the steam room she peered through the glass window in the door. Oz and Willow were making out. She smiled through her tears. At least someone was happy. Turning away from the happy couple she began to run, through the changing room, out through the side door, across the grounds, through flower beds and jumping over bushes in her bear feet. She ran for what felt like an eternity until she reached the walls of the castle and could go no further. The wall was very symbolic for her. In symbolised her imprisonment here. She could never leave. Willow and Xander could pack up and go when they chose. Buffy was destined to live here forever though. A song bird in a gilt cage, but a cage non the less. "WHY?" she screamed as she tried to scale the wall. Throwing herself up it but unable to get a foot or hand hold. In frustration she began beating her hands against the wall, not feeling the pain as the bricks scraped her skin from her hands. Finally exhausted she sank to her knees sobbing "Why, why me". Angelus ordered the staff to search for Buffy and to inform him as soon as they found her. She was not to be found. As darkness fell over the castle he grew worried and formed a search party to look for her in the grounds. After searching for an hour he received word she had been found and taken to her room. Angelus made his way back to the castle, angry also that she had put him through this added torment. His look told everyone to keep clear as he wore a mask of pure rage. He stormed up the stairs to Buffy's room and threw the door open. The sight that greeted him caused him to stop. Buffy was lying atop her bed still in her costume. Her hair was matted, her feet covered in dirt and her hands and feet scratched and bloodied. Then he looked at her face. Her eyes were red and swollen from crying. She looked so small and pathetic lying on the huge bed. His earlier anger at Buffy diminished but a new anger arose aimed at the person who had done this to her. Not wanting to raise his voice in front of Buffy he signalled Willow to join him in the hall and he closed the door after them. "Who did this?" "No one." Said Willow, shocked by the anger in Angelus's voice. It was almost a growl. "NO!, someone must have done this " he said as he grabbed her arm. "And by god you are going to tell me who or you'll spent the next 10 years of your life rotting in jail. Do I make myself clear!" He hadn't seen Buffy open the door. "LET HER GO!" the words were spoken softly but powerfully. Angelus released Willow and she went to Buffy's side. "You want a culprit? Look in a mirror. I'm done with you. If you ever lay a hand on me again I'll kill you. I swear it on my mothers life." She slammed the door shut in his face and he heard the lock engage. Stunned and not understanding Angelus walked to his room next door. He lay on his bed wondering what was wrong with her. He decided to call his doctor in to look at her.

Angelus sat behind his desk, opposite the doctor in his study impatiently waiting to find out what was wrong. "Basically she's a very troubled girl Sir. She's miles from home, she's homesick and she feels trapped. She also says she feels like your playing games with her. Like you don't really want her. Other than that she's fine physically, just a few cuts and bruises" Angelus absorbed the doctor's words. He had treated the family since before Angelus was born and he was well trusted and respected. "What should I do?" he asked. "My advice? Nothing. Leave her be. Give her time to adjust. Perhaps you cold invite her parents out here, maybe for the Engagement ball? What ever you do I suggest you have no contact with her. She sees you as the main cause for her distress and seeing you will only make things worse." "Will she be able to attend the ball?" "As I say, physically she's fine. Weather she goes or not is up to her." Angelus thanked the doctor and he left. Angelus remained in the study brooding. It's always darkest before the dawn they say and Buffy found this to be the case. Next morning a servant knocked and handed her an envelope. Her first mail since she arrived here. The letter was from a children's charity asking her to support them. Put her name to the charity; attend fundraisers etc to help them raise funds and awareness. Enclosed were leaflets detailing their work. They were a charity that looked after sick kids, usually ones who had been abandoned to all intense and purpose by their families, or those who were orphaned. Buffy immediately picked up the phone and called them. By 10am she was on her way there in a car for her first meeting. Willow and Xander went with her. Buffy was greeted at the headquarters by an elegant lady, about 50 with flecks of white running through her golden hair. Buffy hoped she could grow old that gracefully. The lady introduced herself as Janine Palmer, Director of the charity CFK. Care For Kids. Janine looked at Buffy's outfit, jeans and a plane shirt, and she noticed her wounded hands but she didn't say anything. Buffy was visibly nervous and explained that to Janine "call me Jan". Jan understood perfectly and was kind and gentle. She gave an outline of how the charity worked then explained what they would like Buffy to do. It basically consisted of attending a few parties and visiting the children's homes, meeting with the children and staff and being filmed doing so. Buffy asked if it would be possible to meet the children, without the cameras present and how soon it could be arranged. Jan beamed. It appeared Buffy's main interest was the children, the publicity would be secondary. In fact she didn't seem interested in publicity at all, but agreed it would be necessary at times. Jan made a few calls and within half an hour they were on their way to the nearest home. Buffy arrived at an old brick building. Jan told her it was a converted school donated by a patron 70 years ago. As they went in Buffy could see the children were well taken care of. The place was clean, bright and most importantly didn't feel like a hospital, though that was one of its main functions. Buffy met all the staff that were available and spoke to them, asking what they did any why they did it. She loved everyone there. Willow and Xander also felt the place was excellent considering it was a charity care home.

Jan then asked if Buffy would like to meet the children. She agreed she would although she was apprehensive. "Don't worry." Said Jan calmly. "They're all very well behaved and I'm sure they'll love you." Buffy smiled. "This is Jon," said Jan stopping at one door. He's an orphan, his parent's died when he was 2, no other living relatives. He was born with a deformed spine and as such needs a wheelchair and physio every day, he's not in class today because he had a nasty infection, it's cleared up now but the doctor advised he not mix with other children for a few more days. Come on." She said opening the door. "Jon." Jon looked up from his book. "I'd like you to meet a friend of mine. This is Buffy." "Hi," said Jon. He looked to be about 12. "Hi," replied Buffy. "How are you?" "Going crazy. I'm all better but these prison guards wont let me go anywhere." "I think it so the other children don't get sick." Said Buffy. "I know, I know. It's just so boring here. I've got no one to talk to. I want to go back to class." Jan walked over to the bed and kissed his forehead. "I'm sorry Jon. As soon as the doctor gives the all clear we'll let you go back. I promise." Jon gave a weak smile. He knew they were doing their best but he was still upset. "Hey," said Buffy spotting a chessboard. "Do you play?" "I used to. Claire used to play me. She died a couple of months ago. No one else here knows how to play except Bob. He runs the place." Buffy nodded, she had just met him, "but he's so busy he can only manage a game a week or so." Buffy looked to Will who nodded slightly. "Well," she began to Jon, having got her conformation. "It just so happens that Sunnydales finest Chess player is in this very room." Jon's face lit up. "Really?" "Yep. Jon, this is Willow, the finest chess player east of the Missippi." "Wow. I mean do you wanna play?" "I'd love a game." Jon made a move to get into his wheelchair. "No, don't get up. I'll bring it over." Jon gave a 'stop babying me' look and continued getting into the chair. "I cant play up there, I like it by the window, helps me concentrate." "OK," said willow realising pampering wasn't what this boy was after. She took a seat and said. "Ready when you are." "I'll come back in a bit OK Will?" asked Buffy. "Sure, you'll see what remains of my opponent." She said issuing a challenge to the boy. "What remains of me? Boy lady are you gonna get your as kicked!" "Jon!" said Jan. "Sorry, got carried away."

With that they left the brains to battle with knights, pawns and bishops for control of the king. Jan next led Buffy and Xander to a classroom, they peered discreetly through the door as Jan explained the lesson timetables and unusual needs of some students. "Can I talk to them?" asked Buffy. "Sure." Said Jan. "I don't think they'll miss anything too important." She knocked gently and the teacher came into the hall to see them. "Class," said the teacher re entering the classroom. "We have a guest today who'd like to talk to you, so if you'll just put your books away for the moment." They did. "OK, this is Buffy, Buffy this is 4B." "Hi," said Buffy entering the classroom. "So, you know my name, but don't you tell me yours?" The class began going up and down each line reciting their names. They varied in age between 8 and 12 since classes were taught by ability not age. "OK, so," Buffy pointed to a boy. "Kevin is it?" he nodded. "What are you studying?" "French miss." "Ooh, I never liked French. Too French for my tastes. It was all that nasal accent. I sounded more like Miss piggy than a frenman." The class giggled. "So can you say something in French?" Kevin nodded but didn't say anything. "It's OK, I'd be shy about speaking French too." Then one of the children raised their hand. "Yes, um, Tracey is it?" "Um," began Tracey. "Are you Buffy Giles?" "What makes you say that?" Buffy asked. "Well I saw you in a paper. Or it looked like you. Is it you?" Buffy hadn't wanted to be recognised and had no idea her face was well known. But she supposed she'd have to live with that now, she'd better face up to it. "Yes, I am Buffy Giles." The rest of the hour was spent answering more questions than she asked and when the lunch bell rang she joined the children in the que for their food. She finally left the school at 3pm, sorry to be going. On the ride back to the headquarters she informed Jan she'd love to help out in nay way possible. Jan smiled and said they should both think about ways to help, then get together to discuss plans. As Buffy was about to leave she gave Jan a hug. "Thank you." She said simply and got into the car. Jan was surprised by the act and pleased by it also. She felt Buffy had made a real connection to the children today and would be a valuable ally in the future. Buffy arrived back at the castle in a better mood than she had been if for a while for two reasons mainly. One, she felt useful finally, she was doing something to help people and two, she saw how much worse life could be. Seeing the grace and courage those children brought to the world despite their problems made her feel all warm and fuzzy, and not a little ashamed of her antics yesterday. Angelus saw the car pull up and Buffy get out. He knew from the driver where she'd been and he smiled. She seemed to be carving herself a role in the castle. Now if only she would accept him. He had been worried about her but the driver called in regularly to say she was OK which settled his nerves.

The world was a brutal place to one so sweet as Buffy. If he could he'd keep her at the castle forever. He saw now that wasn't an option. Keeping her here would lead to the slow death of her spirit. So he had let her fly and she had returned, although not exactly to him. The ball was tomorrow night and he hoped she would behave. He didn't expect her to be all over him but he didn't want to be made a fool of either. He needed to know what she was going to do. She had had the final fitting for the dress but that was before yesterday. He didn't have a clue if she still intended to go. He had to see her. He called Chris first. Buffy was getting ready for bed then there was a knock on the door. She quickly pulled a robe on and answered it. Angelus stood there. Neither spoke. Eventually Angelus began. "Um, about tomorrow. I was wondering if you were still coming. Buffy nodded curtly. "Well I called Chris and asked about your dress. I thought this might look good with it." He handed her a jewellery box. When she didn't make a move to open it angelus did. In the box sat an emerald and diamond necklace and a matching set of earrings. Buffy wasn't sure what it meant, was he trying to buy her or just being nice. "Thank you. I'll return it tomorrow night." She said taking the box. "No Buffy, it's yours." Buffy was tired and didn't want to get into another argument. She sighed and said. "You can't buy me Angelus. I'm not for sale." "I'm not trying to. These were my mothers. They don't suit me. Wrong colouring." He smiled at his joke, Buffy didn't. He stopped smiling. "I also got you this." He said handing her an envelope. "It's a voucher for beauty and relaxation treatments for you and willow tomorrow." She didn't respond. "Buffy, I know I can be an ass. I'm not easy to live with, I am arrogant and I do think I own most people. But I would never try and own you Buffy." Buffy took the words to mean he could never love her and began to turn away. "Wait, please, let me finish." She did. "I care for you Buffy. Deeply. I'm kind of new at this gushy stuff. But please, I know you hate me but don't turn your back on me. I'd do anything for you." Tears shimmered in her eyes, he thought he'd blown it again. Buffy gave a weak smile. "Thank you." She said. "It's a little too early for me to forget about everything that's happened though." "I'm trying not to push Buffy. I'll give you all the space you need." She smiled that weak smile again then gave a big sigh. "I think I need a sugar rush. You up for some hot chocolate before bed?" He smiled. "Sounds lovely. I'll call down." "No, I'll make it. Come on." He followed her to the kitchen. Buffy decided Angelus should make the drinks and she stood beside him telling him what to do. He managed OK. The milk did boil over and there were little lumps of coco in the drink but it still tasted OK. They sat facing each other across the kitchen table.

"You like the kitchen don't you?" asked Angelus, Buffy looked to see if he was being sarcastic again, he looked genuine. "It's a lovely place. The heart of every home. Or it should be." "I never had that." Said Angelus. "I went to boarding school until I was 12. I could barely pick my parents out of a line up. Wasn't until Mother died that Father even knew I existed. Then he pulled me out of the shadows to stand beside him. The 'family united in the face of tragedy' pose he called it. But as soon as the cameras were out of site I was handed over to the Nanny. Custodian they called her but she was just a Nanny. Hadn't a clue what to do with a 12-year-old boy. She was supposed to school me but I knew more than her. I basically taught myself and used her as an errand boy." Buffy sighed and took his hand. She could understand part of why he was the way he was now. She didn't excuse his behaviour but she understood it better. "Tell me what life in your house was like?" he asked. Buffy recounted a typical day of breakfast, school, friends, cheerleading, dinner, friends and bed. He smiled wistfully at her description. "It isn't all hugs and puppies you know? Having parents can be a bitch. Like when they try and tell you what to do. Or when they try and have the sex talk." Buffy made a mortified face. "Sometimes you have to wonder how much they understand about their children." "They were just doing their best." "I know. And I love them for it. But some of my best times were when they went away. Having willow and Xander over, veging, watching crappy movies and binging on pizza and ice cream." She smiled at the memory. "You ever do anything like that?" "I had friends. From school mainly. That's where I met Oz. They weren't around much outside of school. They had their own lives and families. And they usually lived thousands of miles away." "Must have been tough." "No, a Kings role is pretty solitary anyway. Just got me used to it." Angelus checked his watch. "I suppose it is time for bed. Big day tomorrow." Said Buffy. Angelus nodded. He didn't want the evening to end but it was a big day tomorrow. They cleared their dishes away and he walked Buffy back to her room. "Thank you Angelus." Said Buffy at the door. "I hope you have fun tomorrow." And he leaned in to plant the tenderist kiss he had ever given anyone. If Buffy had been one of those heroines in an old novel she might have fainted. She didn't. "Night." She said. "Goodnight Buffy." Buffy watched as he walked down the hall to his room before going into her room.

The King and I Part 4 Buffy felt the most relaxed she ever had as she got ready for the party. She should be a bag of nerves as this was her first party like this but the day had sufficiently improved her mood so she didn't feel tense at all.

She could almost feel the masseuses' hands still working the tension out of her still. As she put on her dress she heard a knock at the door. Probably Willow needing to borrow something. She opened it. "Mom, Dad!" "Hello Buffy." Said Giles. "Oh my god, what are you doing here?" "Angelus invited us. Said not to tell you, he wanted us to be a surprise." Smiled Joyce. Buffy hugged them like they were returned from the dead. Despite talking to them every day she had resigned her self to the fact she wouldn't see them again for months. "I missed you SO much." She said. "We missed you too sweetie." Said Joyce. Buffy finally broke the hug and invited them into her room. "So, how have you been?" asked Joyce. "And I mean really, not those platitudes you give us on the phone to make us feel better." "I'm good. Really." Buffy told them about the charities and the work she would be doing for them. "And Angelus?" asked Giles. "Not so smooth sailing." Said Buffy. "But we're getting there. I'm OK, really." "Well you certainly do look good." Said Joyce. The Engagement party had begun by the time Buffy arrived. Dean, the Master of Ceremonies announced her entrance along with her parents. "Buffy!" called a brunette lady as Buffy walked in. "Oh my god. It's so good to finally meet you." "Hi. And you are?" "Cordelia, Cordelia Chase of the Aspen Chase's." Buffy looked blank. "Well I can see I've got my work cut out with this one." "I'm sorry, who are you?" asked Buffy. "Cordelia." "That doesn't help me?" "Well I'm only like Angelus's sister. Well cousin if you want to get hung upon details. We like played together all the time as children. He is such a great guy. I'm so happy for you too." Cordie then hugged Buffy. Taken aback Buffy allowed the hug. "Thanks I guess." Detaching herself from Cordelia she asked, "have you seen Angelus yet?" "Oh he's just in the kitchen. He'll be out in a mo. Mean while, lets you and I catch up. God it's like the sister I never had." "Umm, thanks Cordelia, really, but I really do need to see Angelus. I'll be back in two ticks. Promise."

Buffy left, relieved to be out of the scrutiny of this sister/sister-in-law/cousen-in-law. The kitchen was brimming with activity. People ran all over preparing dishes, shouting at people to be heard over the other voices and generally making it impossible to spot Angelus. She didn't need to though, he had spotted her. She looked fantastic. Her hair was swept up into a French pleat, he makeup slightly heavier than usual but not over powering. The dress was perfect, clinging in the right places and skimming the others. The necklace provided the finishing touch. Angelus approached her and she saw him and waved. "Thank you for inviting my parents. It's lovely to see them again." "Your welcome. You look fantastic by the way." Buffy blushed. "No, I mean it. I've never seen anyone prettier my whole life." "Stop, please." "OK, but only on the condition you save me a dance later." "Deal. You dance?" asked Buffy. She hadn't pictured angelus as a dancer. "It was one of the easier classes in school." He shrugged, "So I'm a slacker. It'll pay off tonight though." He said with a devilish grin. Not the arrogant smirk from before, it had been subtly changed and was now charming. "Shall we rejoin our guests?" he said holding out an arm. Buffy took the offered arm and said "An excellent idea. Such a shame to waste this dress in the kitchen." And the headed for the door. "OH, wait, before we go back, who's that Cordelia woman any why is she all over me like a rash?" Angelus groaned. "Sorry, she arrived yesterday while you were out. I managed to keep her away from you until now. She's not as bad as she seems. Give her time. Her heart's in the right place." Buffy looked sceptical but they headed out the party again. The room was a lot fuller now than it had been before and most people turned to catch their first glimpse of the new couple as they entered. Buffy herd murmurs of "they look so good together don't they?" and similar. A very different story to when she had first met angelus in this room. Angelus made his way to the stage and asked the band to stop playing for a few moments. Holding Buffy's hand he guided her to the centre of the stage with him. The official photographer began taking photos of them. Buffy tried to ignore him and not think of the fact they would be spread over every tabloid paper tomorrow morning. "Ladies and Gentleman, Thank you all for coming. I hope this will be an informal affair. Please just enjoy yourselves and have fun." He made to leave the stage and jeers rise from the audience. "I'm sorry, what was that? Who do you want to meet? Oh her?" he said pointing to Buffy, the crowd cheered yes. "OK, OK, I'd like to introduce you all to Buffy, I hope you'll love her as much as I do." Cried of speech rose from the guests. Buffy was mortified. She hadn't known she would have to say anything. "You don't have to if you don't want to." Angelus whispered. "No, it's OK. I can do this." Said Buffy heading to the mic. "Well I'm pretty much just repeating Angelus when

I thank you all for coming. I hope I get to meet all of you tonight. Um, is that it? Do you want more?" The guests cheered her and she took that as a signal to leave the stage with Angelus, happy to be out of the spotlight. "Like a pro." He said and lightly kissed her forehead. "Angelus! Angelus," they turned to see Cordelia rushing over. "Oh my god, It's been so long." She hugged him. Angelus didn't look too comfortable but he accepted her hug. "So, you and Buffy have met then?" he said. "Oh yes. We're like sisters already." "Lucky me." Said Buffy under he breath. "Excuse me." Said Angelus as he noticed a servant signalling him. "I'll be back soon." "Don't go." Said Buffy. "I don't know anyone here." Cordelia grinned. "Don't worry. I'll introduce you. I know everyone who's anyone." And with that Cordelia dragged Buffy away from Angelus and into the crowd. Buffy was soon growing tired of meeting new people and Cordelia's effervescent personality. "Whoa!" exclaimed Cordelia. "Who's the James Bond look-alike?" she pointed to Xander. "Oh, that's Xander." "Xander? Isn't that an odd name?" "It's short for Alexander. Alexander Harris." "Looks and money, what more could a girl ask for." Exclaimed Cordelia. "Money? What makes you think he has money?" "Well the name. No one called Alexander Harris could possibly not have money. Come on, you have to introduce me." "Gladly." Said Buffy seeing a chance to offload Cordelia. "Xander!" she called to her friend. "Hi Buffy. How's the party going?" "Good. I'd like you to meet a friend. This is Cordelia, Cordie, this is Alexander Harris." Cordelia left Buffy's side to take Xanders arm. "I could use a drink, How about you?" "Uh, sure, I guess." Said Xander as Cordie led him away. Buffy breathed a sigh of relief. "Buffy." Buffy turned to where her name came from and spotted Oz and Willow walking to her, holding hands. "Great party," said Will. "It's OK I guess. " said Buffy. "I'm kind of tired though. All these new faces and names. And Angelus ran off a couple of hours ago, I haven't seen him since." "He's currently sorting out a wine crisis." Said Oz. "It appears the caterers only brought 12 bottles of '87

chardonnay so he's trying to get some more delivered before they begin trying to serve the '90." "90's not good?" asked Buffy. "Only if you like your wine to taste like vinegar." "I knew that." Said Buffy covering. "So, have you two danced yet?" "A little." Said Willow with a smile. "Oz is a great dancer. Maybe it's the musicians rhythm in him." Willow and Oz shared a smile. "And the music is great." "Yeah, Angelus said they're his favourite band 'cos they play modern songs but put a old fashioned spin on them. That way he doesn't have to listen to what he calls "classical drivel" all evening." "Damn right I don't," said Angelus coming up behind Buffy. "So, can we have that dance now?" "Sure. I'd love to." Angelus took Buffy's hand and led her to the dance floor. The current song ended and the band began playing Bakers Street, which had a Rumba rhythm. Buffy decided to let Angelus choose the dance though. Angelus knew it was a Rumba, he had requested it because of the slow, sexy moves of the dance. He moved gracefully and led her perfectly into each step. Buffy soon forgot about everyone around her and lost herself in the music and Angelus. The official photographer spotted them dancing and began taking pictures of them. The other dancers cleared room for them on the floor and watched. As the song ended Buffy heard applause from the guests. She hadn't realised they were being watched and blushed, trying to hide her face in Angelus's shoulder. "Hey, stop hiding." Said Angelus to her. "Just enjoy it." Buffy tried but her embarrassment still caused her to blush. Luckily they were soon not the main cause of entertainment. "You lied to me!" they heard Cordelia's voice shriek. "I did not. You just assumed." Shouted Xander back. "Well you have no right to look so good and not have money." Was Cordie's reply. "Well you have no right to be such a stuck up bitch!" Cordelia slapped him before storming away. "Aah," said Angelus to Buffy. "So that's how you got rid of Cordelia." "Well she assumed he was rich. I didn't see the need to correct her since it meant she left me alone." Angelus kissed her forehead and said. "Devious. I like the way your mind works." "Thanks, I think." Smiled Buffy. The rest of the evening was uneventful. Buffy and Angelus continued to mix but Angelus protected her from the more boring or over enthusiastic couples. Come midnight most people had left or gone back to their rooms. Buffy and Angelus decided to call it a night also. Angelus and Buffy stood outside her room again to say good night.

"Um, do you want to take the necklace back now?" Buffy asked. "I told you, it's yours." "I wouldn't feel right keeping it. Put it back and if I need it again I'll ask. OK?" "OK." "Why don't you come in while I change then you can take it?" "Sure." Said Angelus. This was the first time since he had shown her the room that he had been invited back into it. He sat on the bed while she went into the bathroom. She came out changed and handed him the necklace. She was only wearing a baggy set of red PJ's but she still looked amazing. Her hair was now loose and her face scrubbed. Angelus wondered if tonight would be the night. "Did you have fun?" asked Angelus. "I guess." Said Buffy lying on the bed. "It just seemed like work more than fun." Angelus lay down beside her. "These things usually are like that. You look tired." "Thanks!" "I didn't mean it like that. Your still gorgeous." She smiled. "Come here." He said laying an arm out across the bed. Buffy snuggled in and pay her head on his chest. Neither spoke for a while. Angelus began to lightly stroke her back and shoulders before he realised Buffy was asleep, he gently stroked he hair hand kissed the top of her head as he drifted off too. Buffy awoke the next morning to find herself looking into two dark brown eyes. Panic over took her as the tried to remember if anything had happened between them. "Morning." Said Angelus. "Uh, hi." Said Buffy sitting up. "Um, did we, um, did anything happen last night?" Angelus smirked again. "Oh, lots happened Buffy. It was a fantastic night. Never had one like it before." He only wished that had been the case. He was still hot for her. "Oh my god." Buffy repeated to herself. Seeing her distress Angelus reached over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Hey. I was kidding. Nothing happened." Buffy looked sceptical. "Sure?" "Positive." Buffy punched him in the arm. "That wasn't nice." "Neither was that." "OK, sorry, But you are a man, it's not like you cant take it." "So being a woman gives you the right to hit me?" "Something like that, especially when you're being mean." "What, mean like this?" he said tickling her. "Stop it," said Buffy giggling, trying to fight him off. They ended up wrestling on top of the bed. Angelus

eventually pinned her arms with one hand above her head and her legs with his body. "You are mine now." He said as he resumed tickling her, her PJ top had ridden up in the struggle and he was tickling her bare midriff. Buffy kept struggling against him, still giggling and telling him to stop. The hand on her midriff began to go higher, Buffy stopped laughing but struggled harder against him. "Don't." she said. Angelus smiled at her. "This does not look good for our heroine." He said as he bent his head down to her neck. He began kissing her neck and trailing kisses down to her chest. With his free hand he began to unbutton her top. Buffy screamed for him to stop. "Come on Buff, could be fun." He said not stopping. With her buttons undone he pushed the top to the sides revealing her bare breasts. He sat back to admire her as Buffy continued to struggle against him. He bent down again and took one nipple in his mouth gently sucking and nibbling at it. It didn't feel all bad to Buffy but she wasn't ready for this. And she certainly didn't want it by force. She began begging him to stop. He didn't. He moved his mouth over to the other breast and began teasing that nipple. His hand moved lower now under the waste band of her pants. "NO, please Angelus, don't do this. Please. For Christ sake I'M A VIRGIN!" she spat. Angelus stopped. And looked at her. "What?" "I'm a virgin. Please don't do this." The shock of her announcement caused Angelus to loosen his grip on her hands. Buffy pulled free and pushed him off her. Scrambling off the bed she pulled her shirt together and ran for the bathroom, locking the door after her. "I'm sorry," he called after her. "I didn't know OK." "Fuck off!" she screamed at him through the door. Angelus sighed. He probably really had blown things now. He just assumed she was being all prissy with him because of the situation. He'd never imagined a girl as beautiful as Buffy had never had sex before. The guys must have been queuing up. He heard the shower in the bathroom start. 'Great' the thought, 'she must really feel bad now'. He sat on the bed waiting for her to come out. Buffy ran the shower and sat below it in the bathtub crying. The water was hot, probably too hot but she wanted it that way. She wanted to wash the feel of him off her. Still crying she picked up a flannel and began scrubbing all over her body. When she was exhausted from the scrubbing she just sat there sobbing, letting the water run over her. Angelus couldn't believe how long she was taking. He began to get mad that she was keeping him waiting so long. He took deep breaths and tried to calm down. His temper wouldn't do him any good right now. In fact it would only make matters worse. He heard the water stop and tried to remain calm as he waited for her to emerge. Buffy dried herself carefully. Her wrists hurt where he had held them together and she gently massaged them. She wiped the steam off the mirror and looked at herself. She looked OK if a little red, she was clean, scrubbed. But she felt dirty. She knew what had happened hadn't been her fault but she couldn't get the memory of it out of her mind.

She steeled herself for the day ahead. No one could know about this. Not even Willow. Not because she was ashamed but because they would insist on taking her away for which they would be imprisoned. No, this was her situation; no one else must suffer for it. She turned away from the mirror and went back into the bedroom. She almost locked the door again when she saw him but her anger prevented her from hiding. "Get out!" "Buffy I just.." "I said. Get. Out" her face was a mask for pure hared. "No, not until you listen to me." She ignored him and went to the closet for her clothes. "I'm sorry OK. I really am. I had no idea." "So it would have been OK if I wasn't a virgin? You really are one sick Mother Fucker. Now GO!" "No, it wasn't right. I'm sorry. I just get so carried away when I'm with you. I can't help it. Please Buffy, don't be mad." "Don't be mad? DON'T BE MAD! What the hell am I supposed to be? Grateful? Ok Angelus, I'm going to make this real simple for you. If being around me is too hard then I simply wont be around." "You cant leave." Said Angelus. "I know I cant, doesn't mean I have to see you though. I'm moving in with Willow in the east wing hopefully that means we shouldn't have to see each other. If you want anything leave a message with Maria or send a servant with it. He could sense things slipping away from him. "No," he got up and locked the door, pocketing the key. "We are not leaving this room until this is resolved." "Resolved? Don't you use pretty little euphemisms on me. You tried to rape me and now you want to be forgiven for it. Sorry pal, the world doesn't work that way and neither do I." Buffy sighed thinking back to two nights ago. "What happened to 'I'd never try to own you Buffy'? Was that just some platitude to get me to forgive you?" "No, I meant it. I still do. I just get so frustrated being near you and not being able to have you." "I just don't understand you. Just when I think I can trust you, you turn on me." Angelus looked down. She was right. "I know, I'm sorry." Buffy looked at him, he looked so forlorn. She just couldn't forgive him this time. "OK," began Angelus. "How about this. I wont try anything else but kissing until our wedding night. I'll even have a contract drawn up or something. If I try anything you get $1,000,000 or something." "You can't buy my affection or my trust." Angelus didn't know what else to try. They sat in silence. Buffy sat in her robe on the opposite side of the room to Angelus, her back to the wall, thinking. "Is this the first time?" she asked eventually "What?" "Is this the first time you've tried something like this?" "Yes."

"I want to believe you but I cant. I said no in the basement, you ignored me. I said no this morning and you still ignored me. I can't believe there haven't been others." "I've just never wanted anyone that much before. Your special Buffy. For many reasons." "You say I'm special but you don't seem to value me." "It's hard. I've never felt this way before. I just don't know what to do to make you love me. So, I got angry and tried to take the only kind of love I could." Tears were brimming in Buffy's eyes. They were a mixture of love and pain. She loved him so much but that love also caused her pain when he tried things like this. "What do you want from me?" he asked. "I want to be able to trust you. I want you to love me." "I do love you Buffy. More than you'll ever know." The ease with which the words slipped out surprised him. "Just tell me what to do to make you trust me." Buffy's tears fell. The words she'd been longing to hear delivered when she was in so much pain. "I don't know." She sobbed. Angelus was unsure if she wanted him to or not but he wanted to comfort her so he did. He gathered her into his arms and whispered softly to her. Buffy curled unto his chest and allowed him to rock her. Her tears finally drying she said, "You still have your tux on." "Yeah. Haven't had a chance to change. Once you fell asleep I didn't want to wake you." "Did you mean it earlier about waiting until we're married?" Angelus didn't know if he could wait that long. They hadn't even set a date and it would take at least a year to arrange. "I meant it. If it makes you feel safe I'll do it." Buffy sat up and looked into his eyes. He seemed sincere. "Thank you," she said and lightly kissed him. Angelus knew not to make more of the kiss than Buffy wanted. "Hold me." Angelus did. He cradled her in his arms as she lay there. Buffy had accepted Angelus again although she hadn't forgiven him. He worried that if he left her alone now she would change her mind again. "Is there anywhere you'd like to go?" he asked her. "No." she said quietly, still curled up on hi lap. "How about the zoo?" he asked. "I used to go there when I was a kid. Haven't been for years. I'd like to take you." "OK." No feeling in the statement at all. Angleus sighed. He knew he had a lot to make up for, he just hoped she would forgive him soon. Come on," he said picking her up. "Lets get ready." Buffy silently put her clothes on, basically just going through the motions. Angelus left her there and went to change himself. He returned to find Buffy sitting on the window sill, staring out of the window. "Are you ready?" "Sure. I'll just get my coat." Again Buffy's movements were slow and sluggish. It seemed her fire had gone.

The very thing that he had found attractive he had also destroyed. He would do his best to fix it though. "Follow me." He said leading her out. They went to a back set of stairs down to one of the garages. Angelus lead Buffy over to convertible 1970 Ford Fairlane Torino. "Shouldn't you have drivers and bodyguards for this?" asked Buffy. "No, this is my private car that I take when I want to blend in." angelus got in the car. Reaching into the glove box he handed Buffy a baseball cap. "Put this on." And he withdrew another cap from his back pocket for himself. Buffy hadn't noticed until then that Angelus was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt. She had never seen him look so casual before. And with the cap on and his stubble growth she had to admit, he would blend in. "Buckle up," he said as he started the engine and put the top down. The zoo was fairly busy being a weekend but not too overcrowded. Angleus was happy as Buffy seemed to regain her smile somewhat. She even allowed him to put his arm around her and kiss her. This was defiantly good but the best reaction came when they went into the petting area. No large animals were kept there, just the cute and cuddly ones you were allowed to play with. Buffy made a bee line for one of the rabbits and brought it over to Angelus. "Isn't she just the sweetest thing ever?" she asked. Not waiting for a reply she continued, this time addressing the bunny. "Yes you are, aren't you. The sweetest little bunny in the whole zoo aren't you?" "You like animals?" asked Angelus. "Who doesn't?" "Me." Buffy looked at him. "Really?" coming closer she said "how could you not love this. Just look at his cute little face with the sweet little whiskers and the little twitching nose." Angelus looked impassive. "Aww, are you seriously telling me you don't thing she's cute?" "Not as cute as you." "Stop it. Seriously, there are no animals you like?" "Well, I don't mind horses. Dogs are OK too I guess. Other than that, not too keen." "Why?" "Horses and dogs are all I really know. Other animals make me nervous." "But you said you used to come here as a child." Said Buffy. "Only once actually. With my mother, before she died. It's just about the only memory I have of her. She loved it here, I was hoping you would too." Buffy felt for Angelus. "Come on, take this." She said handing the rabbit over. Angelus reluctantly took the rabbit. "Stroke her fur." Said Buffy standing right next to him. "See? Don't you feel better? It's not so bad is it?" Angleus shook his head. Although the not bad aspect was having Buffy stand so close, the rabbit he could have left. Wanting more cuddles Buffy took the bunny back. "Come on, lets see what else they have here." Angelus

followed her further into the petting area watching where he stepped for nasty surprises. At lunch time they found a burger bar and bought two burgers and fries which they ate at a table near the Tiger enclosure. "So why horses and dogs?" asked Buffy. "I grew up with them. I've been riding since I was a kid. The dogs were part of the hunting pack. We still have the hounds at the castle because after hunting was banned I didn't have the heart to shoot them and we couldn't find homes for them all. But still they're not cuddly and sweet. Their working animals." "Retired working animals." Said Buffy. "So how come I haven't seen them?" "They live on the land by Maria and Derek's house, he takes care of them. The horses live in the stables but since their not used often they tend to stay in the field by Joe's apartment so he can keep an eye on them. He rides then about once a week to keep them in shape." "You HAVE to show me." Said Buffy. "All those animals and I never knew." "OK, I guess we can stop by on our way back." Buffy beamed at him. The rest of the afternoon was short, Buffy wanted to get back to the dogs at the castle. Pulling up outside Maria's house they saw her run out to them. "Angelus, Miss Buffy. You must stop running off like that. Security have been going wild. Pestering us for information about where you'd gone but we didn't know anything to tell them." "You know as well as I do that the Furies spell protects us." Said Angleus. "But I am sorry Maria. I'll let them know next time." "That's what you say now and come next week it'll be what you say again no doubt." She said. Angelus didn't seem to take offence, it seemed more of a well rehearsed script. "Maria, I was wondering if Buffy could see the dog's. Is it OK?" "Sure, it's perfect timing in fact. Cally just had her litter last night and they are just the most precious pups." "Maria I thought they were going to be neutered." Said Angelus slightly miffed. "They were, Cally got missed somehow." She said leading them into the house. Angelus didn't believe it but he let it ride, they were Maria and Derek's responsibility anyway, if they wanted to be over run with dogs who was he to argue. "Here we go." Said Maria once in the living room. Buffy spied the mother dog lying near the fire, three pups were feeding from her, they were so young their eyes were still closed. "Aww, aren't they cute." Said Buffy. "I know, we've named them already." Said Maria. "This young man is Bobbie, this is Sarah and this is Annie." She said pointing to each in turn. "Why only three, I thought a litter was usually five or six?" "Usually but Cally's 12 now, the litters get less as they get older. And there was one still birth." Buffy gently stroked Cally's head. The dog looked up wearily, made eye contact with Buffy then laid down again. Buffy took that as a sign of acceptance and continued stroking the dog and talking gently to her.

"Can u get you two a drink?" asked Maria. "No, I'm fine." Said Angelus. Buffy thought that meant he wasn't comfortable staying there. She stayed a few minutes longer then decided to go. Now she knew where the animals where there was no reason to keep angelus here any more, she could come back when ever she liked now and not have to worry about the grumpy old scrooge man bothering them. She quietly whispered this to Cally before the left. Cally showed her approval with a lick of Buffy's hand before falling back to the carpet again.

The King and I Part 5 As they returned from Maria's and entered the castle they heard shouting and saw Willow and Oz creeping out of the drawing room. "Who's that?" asked Buffy referring to the argument. "Xander and Cordelia." Said Willow. "They've been at it on and off since this morning." Angelus sighed. "I really don't want to spend the evening listening to those two." He said. Buffy had a thought. "OK, I'll see what I can do. Meet me back here in half an hour or so. And dress casual, nothing formal." All three looked quizzically at her but went off to their respective rooms leaving Buffy to plan. Buffy's first visit was to Sarah, Maria's assistant, then a quick phone call and finally she ordered a car. By the time the other's met her she was ready. "Come on, she said hurrying them into the car." "Where are we going?" asked Angelus. "Just get in." rather than argue he did, as did willow and Oz. The car drove them to another property on the estate, one of the guest houses. Buffy handed the keys to Willow saying "You open up. Guys, help me get this stuff from the boot." They all did as they were told hoping all would be revealed soon. There were two cool boxes in the boot and one basket. Buffy lead then into the kitchen of the guest house. "Right, we are veging." She proclaimed. "And I don't want any arguments. Willow," she handed willow the basket. "Pick some videos from here and get them ready." Willow went off. "Angelus, open some wine in that cool box and Oz, put the ice cream in this box away before it spoils." They did as they were told as Buffy got a selection of crisps and snacks out. "Pizza's are on their way too, should be here in about half an hour." They then joined Willow in the living room. "Our first selection is Mission Impossible. A film suitable for both guys and girls. I hope anyway." Said Willow. They settled down to watch. Angelus and Buffy took the sofa and Oz and Willow shared the armchair. There was plenty of seating but part of these veging nights seemed to be crowing together. Angelus didn't object as Buffy cuddled into him. They sipped wine, ate snacks, made jokes and devoured the pizza's when they arrived. Not much of the film was watched but fun was defiantly being had. Next came a film change and ice cream. Both couples shared

a tub while watching Die Hard and picking holed in the plot and special effects. Bruce willis's acting also came in for some stick. With out realising it the time was 1am. All parties were tired but couldn't muster the strength to make it to the bedrooms. They slept in the living room curled up with their respective partners. Buffy went down to the kitchen the next morning once back at the castle to a surprise piece of news from Maria. "Mr Xander and Miss Cordelia spent the night together." She said, keen to share her gossip. "Mr Xanders bed wasn't slept in and they were seen coming from Miss Cordelia's room this morning. Buffy wasn't sure what to make of this news. It surprised her, that was for sure. And she wasn't sure if she liked Cordelia yet. Still, it was their decision, maybe the fighting would stop now which had to me a plus. The next few weeks were uneventful. Giles and Joyce returned to Sunnydale. Buffy continued working for the charity and also took on two others, an AIDS charity and an animal sanctuary. She and Angelus were getting along fine generally, neither rocking the boat and Buffy agreed to set a wedding date for 14 months time having been assured it would take at least that to arrange the wedding. Buffy tried to insist on a private wedding but was informed by the wedding planner, in no uncertain terms that it wouldn't be possible in their position to have a small wedding. She reluctantly agreed. Angelus continued as before with his work and trying to be nice to Buffy. With her new responsibilities he saw less of her but she was happier than he had ever seen her. She seemed to have forgiven him for the night after the Engagement Ball and in return he had accepted her boundaries telling himself it would be romantic, old fashioned and traditional to wait till their wedding night. He didn't completely convince himself though. Oz returned to his home but was a frequent visitor since the land they ruled was still officially his mothers responsibility. He helped her as much as he could but, by law, most of the work had to be done by her leaving him free to visit Willow. Cordelia also returned home but frequently returned to be with Xander. The fights hadn't stopped but they did seem shorter than they had been, which everyone was grateful for. Almost two months after arriving at the castle Buffy received an odd phone call from Riley Finn, an old boyfriend from high school. He wanted to visit and see how she was. Buffy suspected either he wanted a taste of the highlife or her parents had put him up to it. She agreed to him coming though. A day later Angelus received a call from Darla, one of his oldest girlfriends and one who popped up after every break up to fill the void in Angelus's life. He hadn't seen her since the announcement and Angelus had assumed she was off sulking. It now appeared she was ready to be adult so Angelus invited her to stay with them and meet Buffy. Darla and Riley arrived on the same day which Buffy found odd but she chalked it up to a coincidence. Riley seemed ecstatic to see Buffy and immediately hugged and kissed her. Angelus wasn't happy but allowed it. Buffy didn't seem too comfortable with the hug or kiss either but she accepted it. She then introduced him to Angelus. Angelus didn't like him, something was off but he couldn't put his finger on what it was. He decided Riley would have to be watched closely while he was here. Before they had even entered the castle Darla arrived and greeted Angelus with an over amorous hug. Buffy pelt pangs of jealousy but kept repeating Angelus's words of love to herself. They were shown by a servant to their respective rooms and Angelus and Buffy arranged to meet them for

dinner that evening. Dinner turned into an odd affair. In attendance were Angelus, Buffy, Willow, Xander, Cordelia, Riley and Darla. Contrary to the seating arrangements Darla took the seat to the left of Angelus. Buffy sat the other side and Riley seating himself next to Buffy. Willow, Cordie and Xander took the spare seats. The conversation seemed to centre around old times with Riley reminding Buffy of incidents from their past and Darla doing the same to Angelus. Buffy was happy to remember old times for a while until she began to feel uncomfortable with Riley's comments. "And remember that time of the senior trip when we went boating?" began Riley of this next story. "How could I forget." Said Buffy plainly. "You fell into the water and your top went all see through." As an aside to the others he said "She only had this white summer shirt on and everything, I mean everything was visible." He laughed but only Darla laughed with him. "How adorable." She exclaimed. "It reminds me of that cruse we had. Remember the pool." She giggled at the in joke. Angelus didn't. "I don't think this is the time or place for this Darla." he said simply. Darla didn't seem to notice the hint to stop and continued. "And the look on that stewards face when he caught us." Another laugh. "Oh, it was priceless." "And, " began Riley. "Remember the look on Sniders face when you got out of the lake, He didn't know where to look, he was all stammery and red." "I guess it was a good thing Will had a cardigan I could borrow." Buffy said simply hoping this talk would soon end. Willow and Xander tried their best to redirect the conversation but it didn't help. Next came Riley and Buffy's first kiss and how nervous she'd been, Then Darla's 21st birthday party in which sex was obviously had in the kitchen, though it wasn't mentioned directly in conversation, just implied. By the end of the meal Angelus was loosing his temper. To avoid an outburst Buffy took his hand. "Well I think I'd better go to bed." She said. "You have a big day too tomorrow hunny, wanna turn in with me." Angelus accepted her offer and they left. "What a nightmare." said Buffy as she lay on Angelus's bed cuddling him. "I know, is fish boy always such a geek?" "Fish boy?" "Riley FINN, Fish boy." "No he isn't and don't be so horrible to him, he's sweet in his own way. Darla was just as bad." Angelus sighed. He knew Darla was playing games with them but he wasn't sure how to stop her. "I know." "How long is she here for?" asked Buffy. "Open invitation. And Fish boy? How much longer do I have to face this infantile crap." "Well he didn't say how long he was staying. I didn't think to impose a limit."

"Lets just hope things improve." Said Angelus kissing the top of her head. As Buffy returned from the CFK charity the next day Riley was waiting with a picnic. "Hey, Buffy, wondered if you fancied showing me around the grounds. I have food." He said holding up the picnic basket. Buffy agreed but said she had to change first, she found Angelus and told him so he didn't get jealous. Angelus wasn't pleased but he agreed. Buffy began by taking him around the tennis courts and then to the rear gardens. Riley chatted incessantly wanting to know how she was, what things were like, what Angelus was like and how they got along. Buffy answered most questions with a simple answer, not wanting to give too much away. "So who is this Darla Woman?" he asked. Buffy told him all she knew. "She's the daughter of Earl Master Muhsen. She's 30, pretty much a socialite, no job. She's an old flame of Angelus's. They've been on-off for years now. Other than that I don't really know much." "An old flame. And your OK with that?" "Why wouldn't I be?" asked Buffy. "Well if they've been on again off again aren't you worried they get together again?" "No, Angelus loves me, he'd never cheat on me." "Well, I'm glad your so confident because I don't think I would be." "Then it's a good job you aren't marrying him them." Said Buffy curtly. "Now if we can please change the subject." The rest of the picnic was awkward as Riley kept trying to bring Angelus and their relationship up again. Buffy dodged his questions and insisted on returning to the house after lunch saying she had work to do. Riley accepted. Angelus watched from the study window as Buffy and Riley made their way back. He saw Riley put his arm around Buffy. Then he saw Riley lean over and kiss Buffy. He ran from the window. What he hadn't scene was Buffy trying to brush Riley off and slapping him after the kiss. Darla blocked Angelus's path out of the study though. "She doesn't deserve you you know. I saw that little display myself. If you ask me little Buffy's playing away from home." "This doesn't concern you Darla." Said Angelus, his anger showing in his voice. "Oh but it does Angelus. I know we're not together anymore but I don't want to see her hurt you. And she will hurt you Angelus. She cant accept you and she never will." Angelus shoved Darla out of the way and stormed off to his room. Darla called after him. "She'll never love you Angelus, only I can do that and you know it." Locking he door angelus began throwing things. As much as he didn't like Darla some of what she said rang true. Buffy had never said she loved him, she had only said she wanted him to love her. And that display with Riley only cemented what he thought. She would never have allowed the kiss if she loved Angelus would she?

Angelus decided what was sauce for the goose would be sauce for the gander also. Once back in the castle Buffy went to see Willow and told her about Riley. "Oh my god Buffy, what do you think he's trying to do?" "I have no idea. He must know I can't leave but still he's trying to make a move on me." Buffy sighed. "I'm just glad Angelus didn't see, Riley would be toast by now if he had." "True. Still after that display I cant say I'd be sorry." "Willow!" said Buffy in surprise. "Well he's trying to mess with you. And no one messes with my friends." Buffy smiled at her friends support. Angleus decided they would go out that night. There was a party being held by his parents friends that he had declined. Now he called and changed his mind. He asked Maria to let Buffy know. As Buffy dressed for the party she was glad for the chance to get away from Riley and Darla. Both of whom seemed intent on making life unbearable. Time alone with Angelus was just what she needed. As she got into the car she had a surprise in store. "Buffy," said Angelus with a smile. "Darla will be joining us tonight. I hope you don't mind?" Buffy smiled as sweetly as she could under the circumstances and said it was OK. But she had a strange feeling. Angelus's smile was off. Strange. She couldn't put her finger on why though. As they entered they party Angelus took Darla's arm, not her's. Buffy tried to hide the hurt she felt as she followed behind them. Angelus spent the rest of the evening escorting Darla around the room, dancing with her, talking to her. Buffy tried to butt in and ask hat the hell he was playing at but the opportunity didn't present itself. Darla never left his side. Instead Buffy chose to keep to the outskirts, chatting to the other friendly souls who also felt out of their depth. They were all kind enough not to mention Angelus's actions, although they were plane to see. Buffy ended up talking to Anne for most of the evening. Anne ran a home for runaways and had been invited only because the hosts were patrons of her charity. She felt out of her depth too. They had fun talking but Buffy's attention was constantly diverted to Angelus and Darla. Then it happened. They were dancing close and saw Buffy watching them. Darla smiled, Angleus smirked as they looked over to her and then whispered something to each other before kissing. Tears welled in Buffy's eyes which she tried to fight back. Anne gently took her arm and guided her outside. "I'll take you home." She said simply. Buffy let her tears flow and Anne guided her to her car. "I'm sorry. You don't have to leave, honestly, I'll be fine." "Don't be silly. I'm taking you home and that's it." Buffy accepted. The only problem was the castle wasn't the home she wanted to go to. Her home was thousands of miles away on the other side of the country. She settled for the castle though, at least Willow and Xander would be there.

Anne dropped Buffy off and asked if she wanted her to stay. Buffy thanked her but said no, her friends were here, so Anne wished her well and left. Buffy couldn't find Willow or Xander but Riley soon found her. Buffy took comfort from him as he was the only one around. Riley guided Buffy to his room and tried to find out what had happened. Through her tears Buffy managed a brief account of the evening and Riley vilified Angelus at every opportunity. Buffy soon felt better. "Thanks Riley. For being here." He smiled at her. "Your welcome. Can u get you anything?" "A soda would go down well." "You got it." He lightly kissed her then left before she could tell him to phone the order to housekeeping. Buffy stretched out on the bed and tried to remember when things had gone wrong and why. Her thoughts were interrupted by Riley's phone bleeping. She looked over to it. He had a text message. Her eyes grew wide when she saw the source. Darla! Thinking fast Buffy opened the case and withdrew the SIM card. Opening her own phone she replaced it with her's and entered her code. Riley shouldn't notice the difference unless he used it. "Buffy?" said Riley from the doorway. "What's wrong? You look all flushed." "I'm fine really. I have to go though. Thank you for listening riley. Really." And Buffy left. "What about your soda?" Riley called after her. She didn't reply. Back in her room Buffy inserted the SIM card into her own phone and tried the first four digits of his birth date as the code. Bingo! She entered the messages area. 12 messages, all from Darla. She began with the oldest first. "Good, A's agreed 2. arrive on the 16th. U?" "good. Make plans when we get there." "be there at 3ish, u?" sent the day they both arrived. Next message. "went well. Dinner should be good. Had ne ideas?" Then. "Good but I think memories r best. Try to embarrass them ;-)" "Come on, remember the goal. We have to do this, no one looses. U get her, I get him. Don't wimp out now." "Went well I think, ready for tomorrow?" "saw Buffy's schedule. She's back at 1ish. R u ready?" "No, save the kiss until u'r on the way back so he can see from his window." "excelent! he bought it. Locked in his room making mess. We r nearly there ;)" "A's invited me out tonight. Think this is it. Get ready to comfort poor B. :-)" "she back yet?" was the last message he received when Buffy heard the phone. .

Buffy's blood boiled. How dare they. How dare Angelus just accept she would cheat on him. He didn't even ask her about it. She paced her room thinking. Then she wondered where Willow and Xander were. She called Maria at her house. "They went out to the movies. Mr Riley said they needed a break. They took Miss Cordelia with them." "Thank you Maria. Good night." So he had even got rid of her friends so she would have to go to him for comfort. There was a knock on the door. "Buffy?" asked Riley. "I'm fine, just give me some space OK?" "Are you sure? I'm here if you want to talk." "Tomorrow maybe. I'm just too tired right now." "Well you know where I am if you need me." "Thanks Riley." She almost choked on those words. Thank? Kill more like. "Night." "Night Buffy, hope you sleep OK" When she was sure he was gone she wrote a brief note and went next door into Angelus's room. She left the note on the bed. Riley lay on his bed thinking about Buffy. She seemed in so much pain. He wondered if this was all worth it. He began to think back to his first meeting with Darla. 6 weeks earlier. Riley sat under a tree in Sunnydale's university grounds going over his notes for the final exam. "Hey there." Said a voice, he looked up to see a beautiful blonde woman staring down at him. "Hi." "What are you looking at?" she asked "Just notes from class. The final exam's next week." "Oh, exams, I always hated them." "You don't go here do you?" asked Riley. "Me? Please. All my learning is long behind me." "Do you mind if I ask what your doing here?" "I came to see you." She said sitting down. "I'm Darla." "Riley, Riley Finn." "I know." "So what is it you want?"

"To make your life happier. And mine in the process." "I'm sorry, I seem to have missed something here." Darla giggled. "No, it's my fault. I came about Buffy." "What about her?" he asked putting his book aside. "I know you still love her. It's common knowledge. And I know she's unhappy where she is. Her parents are fraught with worry about her." "So?" "I want to help her and you." "And where do you come into this?" Riley asked. "I want to help me too." Riley sighed. "If there's a point to this please make it." "Oh, your no fun. OK here's the deal. You want her, I want Angelus and Buffy's unhappy. I want to solve all our problems." "How?" "Well we break them up. Only if Angleus calls off the engagement can Buffy be free." This was a lie. Once the engagement ball had been held, there was no going back. Buffy could only be imprisoned or killed depending on the severity of Angelus's displeasure leaving him free to marry someone else. "So how exactly do we do that?" asked Riley. "Well we come up with ways, ideas, think about it. My first idea is for us both to stay with them, that way we're both on hand to deal with our respective loves." "I'm kind of in the middle of exams here." Said Riley unconvinced. "Ooph! You really are terrible. I tell you that the love of your life is desperately unhappy and all you can do is complain you have finals. Well fine, leave Buffy to a life of misery, see if I care." Darla made to leave. "NO, wait. Said Riley stopping her from getting up. "I don't want her to be unhappy. But if I miss these exams I'll have to take the whole year again." "So we wait, you should be finished soon right?" "Another month or so." "Then we'll arrange to meet up then and talk more." Said Darla leaving. "Wait, how will I find you?" called Riley. "You wont have to, I'll find you." Over the next four weeks Riley tried to study but found it hard, he completed his exams and waited for Darla to reappear. A week later she found him in a coffee shop. "Hey there, been a while." She said sitting opposite him. "I wasn't sure I'd ever see you again."

"Well here I am. And I have this for you." She handed Riley a file of pictures. They were all of Buffy. In some she looked sad, others she was shouting at an unseen man, and in others still he was seen shouting at her. "These are Buffy and her new Beau. Doesn't look too happy does she?" asked Darla. All the pictures had been doctored on computer from official pictured released to the press. "Where did you get these?" asked Riley. "I have my sources. Now, when are we with going to visit Buffy?" "I guess she could use a friend right now." Said Riley forlornly. "That she could. So your in?" "OK, I'm in." "Good, now after today we mustn't talk in person. Here's my mobile phone number." She said handing him a card. "Only call if you have to otherwise text me. Angelus has eyes everywhere." Riley pocketed the card. "Now, you'll call today see if she'll let you come. Then text me and tell me when your going, I'll take care of the rest." "And what do we do when we get there?" asked Riley. Darla withdrew another folder from her handbag. "Here's a list. We'll stick to it as far as possible but be flexible if things change. And remember, especially once we get there, text, don't call." "Got it." "Later sweetie." Were Darla's parting words as she rose and left. Riley looked through the photo's of Buffy again the began looking through the file of plans from Darla. There were scenarios for every situation. Two hours later he made the call. Present day. It seemed so simple then, Riley thought. And they still were simple. Angleus was bad for Buffy, the photo's were enough for him to see that. It might hurt her now but it was for her own good, he reasoned. Yes, he reassured himself, he was doing the right thing.

The King and I Part 6 Angelus finally snapped at Darla in the car on the way home. "For Christ sake we were acting. I still don't want you so get your tongue out of my ear!" Darla sulked beside him. "She's the one who kissed Riley, not me." "I'm not taking it out on you I simply want to be left alone." He growled. "Fine fine. You know where I am when you see sense." They didn't talk for the rest of the journey. Back at the castle Angelus went straight to his room, not even bothering to say goodnight to Darla. He disliked her just as much as he had before, she had just been a useful tool for revenge. He didn't notice the note at first, only when he went to get into bed. Below the note sat a mobile phone.

The note read:"Since you obviously enjoyed humiliating and hurting me tonight I don't think I should be doing this, you don't deserve to know. However it does give me good thoughts to think of your face when you realise you've been played. That's Riley's SIM card in my phone. Read the text messages. I know they're one sided but even an idiot like you can figure out what's been happening." Angleus slowly went through the messages getting more and more infuriated with each line he read. His desire to hurt them grew but he restrained himself. The revenge against them would have to fit the crime, and playing with Angelus was a serious crime. He lay back on his bed to plot revenge. Then he remembered. Buffy! "Shit!" he exclaimed. Yet another mess to fix. He wondered if she was still up. He had to sort this out now. He went next door and knocked. No reply, he tried to open the door. Locked. He began banging on the door calling Buffy's name. When not even a "go away," was heard he assumed she wasn't in there. He tried the kitchen. She had been here, he could smell her perfume, but she had gone, next he tried Willow and Xanders rooms. Willow was asleep when he knocked. She got out of bed to the pounding on her door and opened it to an angry Angelus. "Where is she?" he demanded. "I don't know. I haven't seen her since this morning." She went to shut the door on him. Angelus blocked it and stormed in. He began looking for her, under the bed, in the bathroom, in the closet. "She's not here." "Then where is she?" he demanded. "I don't know. Now please leave. I'm very tired." Angelus carried on looking, Willow got back into bed. "Turn the light off when u go." she said pulling the covers over her head. Xanders room was empty but Angelus searched it anyway. Nothing. He called on Cordelia and found Xander there with her. He trusted Cordie and when she said Buffy wasn't there he believed her. The only other place he could think to look was Riley's room. He doubted she would be there since she knew the truth but he had to check. As he neared he saw light coming from below the door, Riley was still awake. Angelus put his ear to the door and could hear sounds of passion. He tried the door gently. It was locked. He stood back and gave a solid kick and the door flew inward. Lying on Riley's bed were Buffy and Riley, making out.

Angelus moved to begin pounding on Riley. Buffy rushed to stop him. She jumped up on him, wrapping her legs around his waist and throwing her arms around him. She whispered, "As much as I hate you right now I hate them more. Play along." Curious to see where this was going Angelus agreed. "I missed you Angie." Said Buffy playfully. "You don't mind me playing with Riley do you?" Her look told her his answer should be no. "No." he managed to choke out. "But you should just tell be before hand." He said referring to the door. "Good." She kissed him. Riley just stared from the bed, dumbfounded. He hadn't been expecting Angelus to show up. In fact he hadn't been expecting anything. He answered the door to Buffy and she had pounced on him, he hadn't been able to get a word in since. Buffy nibbled on Angelus's ear and whispered, "Where's my phone? I have to change the cards back." "Back pocket." He whispered back nuzzling her neck. "Keep him occupied." Buffy whispered reaching for the phone. "Excuse me boy's," she said once she'd retrieved the phone. "I have to go to the ladies room." She walked into Riley's en-suite bathroom. "Have fun?" Angelus asked Riley. "Um, I...I... I guess." Stammered Riley. "You guess? You make out with my fiance and you guess it was fun." He moved to Riley threateningly. "Honey! Leave him alone." Called Buffy playfully from the bathroom. It took all of Angelus's strength not to hurt Riley. Thankfully Buffy emerged a few moments later. She went over to Riley and kissed him. Although Angelus could see the action was only so she could drop the phone on the floor he couldn't help himself, he grabbed Buffy's arm and dragged her out of the room. "Night" she called to Riley. Once out of earshot Buffy pulled out of Angelus's grasp and slapped him. "How dare you drag me around." "ME!? What about you kissing Fish boy," "So you can kiss Darla but I cant kiss Riley. I am SO glad we sorted that out!" Buffy stormed off to her room. Angelus followed. Buffy tried to shut the door in his face but he forced it open. "Get out." She spat. "Not until you tell me what's going on." "I just thought it would be nice to play them at their own game." "So you make out with Riley?" "I had to get his phone to change the card back."

"And you just fell on his lips?" "So, what if I did go there with the sole intention of making out with Riley? It doesn't give you any right to get mad." "Wanna run that by me again?" "You kiss Darla, I kissed Riley. It's not brain surgery." "So this whole 'play along' thing was just so I wouldn't hurt lover boy?" "NO, I told you why I went there." Buffy sighed, "We're getting no where." "Then please explain things to me." "I went there to get his phone so I could switch cards back. That way he doesn't know we're on to them. When you came I saw an opportunity to replace it so I wouldn't have to take the phone. The kiss was a distraction for riley and revenge on you." Angelus supposed he had it coming. He tried not to get too angry. "So what's the next stage in your plan?" "I haven't got that far. And you kicking the door down certainly wasn't part of it." "What did you expect me to do, run away like you did?" Angelus's words stung her and she slapped him again. "Stop that!" growled Angelus. "Why?" asked Buffy through misted eyes. "You deserve that and more after what you put me through tonight. " "I know, I'm sorry." "But you keep hurting me. Sorry doesn't cut it Angelus. Why didn't you come and speak to me after you saw riley and me this afternoon? We could have sorted things out. But no, 'Mr I'm all powerful' has to hurt me again." She sighed, fell onto the bed and curled up. "I'm just so tired of being hurt. And always in the back of my mind I'm wondering when the next time is going to be." Angelus sat beside Buffy and gently brushed the hair away from her face. His anger was not gone, but rather directed at the right source again. "I know. And I am sorry" "This isn't a competition Angelus. We're supposed to be a team." "Then work with me. We still have them to deal with." Said Angelus. "I know. I can't believe he did something like that." "We will get them back Buffy. I promise you that." "How?" Angelus thought for a moment. "Well with Darla her biggest fear is not being in polite society. If we can find a way to humiliate her, ensure she's never accepted again, that's the worst thing imaginable to her." "Money." Said Buffy simply. "What?" "If we can find a away to take away her money that should do it. And her title if possible." "What about Riley?" asked Angelus.

"His biggest fear is failing as an academic. He has these big plans to be the worlds most renound Psychiatrist. Write papers and stuff." They discussed plans for a while longer. As Angelus was about to leave Buffy grabbed his hand. "Angelus. I love you. But if you ever hurt me again I'll leave. I'd rather deal with any punishment the courts can meter out then face any more pain." Angelus smiled. He finally knew how Buffy felt. He kissed her hand. "I love you too. And if you ever call me Angie again I'll leave you." Buffy smiled. "Aww come on, it's cute. Please." "No." "How 'bout Angel?" "I'm hardly that." She squeezed his hand "you are to me. Stay with me." Angelus nodded and lay on the bed, gathering her to him. Next morning they put the plan into action. Part one. Security was intercepting all mobile phone calls and text messages so Buffy and Angel would know what to expect. Part two was to be infuriatingly cute to each other when Darla and Riley were about. Part three should kick in later that day. The rest of the plan was still uncertain but both were working on solutions. Angelus received his first message from security at 7am. Two text messages and one phone call over night. They sat down together to read it. 1st text, Riley to Darla. "she kissed me, A broke door down and dragged her out." 2nd text Darla to Riley. "And he didn't hurt you? I need to speak to you, go to bath-rm., will call in 2 min's" Transcript of the phone call. Time 5.14 AM. D - Hi, Can u talk? R- It's clear. D -so what happened? R - Buffy turned up and we began making out, then a few minutes later Angelus stormed in. Buffy said something about it being all right to play with me. Angelus said it was ok but I don't get the impression he was happy, Buffy went to kiss me again and he dragged her out. I followed them after they left and heard Buffy slap him for dragging her out. D - Oh, that's good. I wouldn't have wanted to be Buffy last night, that's for sure. R - you don't think he'd hurt her do you? D - I wouldn't thing so. Still, he has a vicious temper. Breakfast if probably going to be uncomfortable for everyone. I suggest you comfort Buffy, try and take her out for the day or something, that'll leave me with

Angelus. R - are you sure you'll be OK with him? I mean if he's mad he could take it our on you? D - I can handle him. You just worry about Buffy. Darla hung up. Buffy smiled at Angelus. "This is going to be sooo much fun!" she giggled kissing him. The memory of his kiss with Darla still hurt but she had done exactly the same to him so she couldn't hold it against him. She was trying to forget about it. "So, where would you like to go today?" Angelus asked. "Don't you have to work?" "It's Saturday. I think I'm going to make it illegal to work on Saturday." "Sounds good to me." She kissed him again. "So, how do we get out of their plans today?" Angelus asked. Buffy sighed. "Well. We could just hide in here all day." "As tempting as that is, I think they might just find us." Smiled Angleus. "OK, then we'll go out with Cordie and Xander to visit her parents. She's going back today anyway so we can tag along. And I think we should let the others in on what's happening." "I agree on both counts. An excellent plan. Since Riley knows no one in Cordie's family he wont be welcome and Darla always hated Cordie so she wont want to come." "Great. I'll go tell Will, Xander and Cordie. See you at breakfast." Buffy dressed and left. Darla arrived at the breakfast table to see Angelus sitting alone. Excellent. "Sleep well?" she asked. "Like a log." Angelus replied. "You?" "OK I guess. I couldn't stop thinking about you though. Kept me up half the night." Angleus didn't respond. "You know if you ever get lonely you could always visit me at night." "Visit you when?" said Buffy walking into the dinging room. She walked straight over to Angelus, kissed him long and passionately on the lips then sat in his lap while Angelus fed her some toast. Darla's jaw dropped. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. Angelus would never forgive Buffy for kissing Riley. Never. Yet here he was all over her. Buffy looked over to Darla. "Visit you when?" she asked again. "Um, in a few weeks, when I return home I was inviting Angelus to visit me." Darla managed to lie. "Or the truth," began Angelus "is she want's me to visit her at night." "Aww, that's so sweet." Said Buffy to Darla. To Angelus she said "She misses you." "Well I am irresistible." "That's true." They kissed again as Riley walked in.

Riley looked to Darla who shrugged and mouthed. "I don't know" "So," said Riley interrupting the kiss. "how are you today Buffy?" "I'm great thanks. And sorry about last night, I think I had a little too much to drink at the party." "Oh, it's ok. Look I was wondering if..." "Morning." Said Cordie. "So, Buffy, Angelus, you ready to go by 10?" "We'll be ready. I cant wait to meet your parents." Said Buffy. "Good, they are going to love you so much." "Your going out?" asked Darla of Angelus. "Yes, I thought I was long over due to see the Chases and since they're at their summer home not far from here I thought I'd drop by." He said. "I know, Aspen is too far away for people to just drop in on us. Still, we do get quite a few visitors over the winter so it's OK." Said Cordelia. Darla was steaming but could see no way to get Angelus to stay. "So you're all going?" she asked. "Yep," said Cordie. "Well it'll be lonely here all by myself. Mind if I tag along?" said Darla. "I don't think that's a good idea." Said Cordie. "My parents don't like you. And besides, Riley will be here." "Well he can come too. You can't leave me with a stranger for company, it's not polite." "Let her come if she wants to." Said Angelus to Cordie. "Well OK, but don't blame me if she picks another fight with Mom." "That was five years ago!" exclaimed Darla. "How could they still be upset about that?" "Drop it!" said Angelus. "We're going to have a nice day and anyone who wants to come is welcome, any one who doesn't stays here. And no fighting. Got it." Angelus was kind of glad she was coming, they would hopefully get to see part three of the plan take effect. "Umm. I love it when your all masterful." Said Buffy kissing him again. "I'm going to get ready." Said Darla leaving so as not to view any more of their intimacy. "Do you want to come Riley?" asked Buffy. "Sure. Why not." "Great."

Buffy, Angelus, Darla, Riley, Cordie, Xander and Willow all piled into two large cars. Willow made sure there wasn't room for both Darla and Riley in Buffy and Angelus's car but Darla still came with them. The journey was tense with Buffy cuddling into Angelus and them whispering and giggling to each other the whole way. Willow took the opportunity to get to know Darla. She had an idea that maybe a spell could help Buffy and Angelus accomplish what they wanted and to do

that she needed as much information as she could. Darla was uninterested and snapped a few times but Willow appeared not to notice. Things in the other car weren't anywhere near as tense but Xander was. He knew Riley and couldn't believe what he was trying to do to Buffy. Thankfully Cordie kept a restraining arm on Xander or he might have hurt Riley. After an hour and a half they finally arrived at the Chases holiday home and made their way inside. Angelus went to get the present he had brought from the boot of the car and Darla lagged back to talk to him. As he made his way towards the house she said. "Bit of an about face isn't it?" "It's none of your business." He replied. "Come on, last night you couldn't stand her, all you wanted to do was tear her heart out and now your all over each other? What about what she did with Riley in the garden?" "We had a long talk, none of which concerns you and we came to an agreement." "Oh please, I've never seen you do an about face so fast in my life." "I've never loved anyone before." He stated simply. "L... L. "Darla stopped to process the information. Had he said love? Angelus continued walking. Darla ran to catch up with him again. "You can't love her. She's a hick. She's only a baron's daughter for christ sake, she is so far below your station it cant possibly work. You CANNOT LOVE HER!" "And yet I do." He said as they arrived at the house. "Mrs Chase." He said as he saw Cordelia's mother. "It's good to see you." They air kissed. "And you Angelus" she replied. Angelus handed the gift over saying. "I saw this a few months ago, I just has to buy it for you." Mrs Chase opened the bag and brought out a picture. "Oh, Angelus, it's beautiful. It's will go so well in the diningroom. Thank you" "My pleasure." Mrs Chase then spotted Darla. "Oh. I didn't expect to see you here." "Well, I thought it was time we cleared the air." Said Darla. "No, I didn't mean that." Darla looked confused. "You don't know do you?" said Mrs Chase. "Well, it's easiest if you all just follow me." She lad them all into the play room and turned on the Television on to CNN. The female reporter was saying. "... over to David Connely who's outside the house. David, this is an unprecedented move isn't it? David replied. "Absolutely. Nothing like this has been seen since the IRS was set up." "Have we heard from Earl Master Muhsen yet?" "No but his lawyer did read a brief statement a few hours ago. "David consulted some notes and read. "The statement said. 'The earl is sorry that these measures have been put in place but he will cooperate fully with the investigation in the hopes that once this is sorted the culprits can be brought to justice.' " "The measures he talks about, do we have any idea what those are?" "Well it appears that as well as being audited the finances of the Earl and his daughter Darla have been

frozen. An unusual step this early in the investigation." "And by bringing the culprits to justice, I take it he means those in the IRS?" "Yes, that's right. As you may know, bringing criminal charges against the Royal Family that aren't substantiated is considered treason. In other words if the IRS doesn't find anything, they could find themselves in jail." "They must have some pretty strong suspicions to be doing this then." "Right. It's hard to see that an investigation of this magnitude would be brought if they weren't already certain of finding something." "Dave Connely, thank you. I'm joined now in the studio now by Edmund Richards, our Royal correspondent. Edmund." "Oh my god! I have to call daddy." Cried Darla digging through her purse for her phone. Buffy leaned her back into Angelus and he wrapped his arms around her. Both were trying to conceal their smiles. "Daddy. Is it true?" asked Darla of her phone. "But they cant. They just cant." "What about my car?" "No! even the offshore accounts? How could they know?" "Why is this happening?" "What? I hadn't thought of that. OK I'll ask. Talk to you soon daddy." And she hung up. "Angelus," she said turning to face him. "Daddy wants to know if there's anything you can do." "Sorry Darla, the IRS is an independent body. I have no authority over them." "But what about giving us immunity?" "Darla that law was abolished decades ago. Your on your own here. There's nothing I can do to help." Darla screamed. "NO! This isn't happening, this cant be happening." "You need to speak to your accountant Darla, he's the only one who can advise you on this." Said Mrs Chase helpfully. Angleus and Buffy left the room, partly because they had seen what they wanted to, partly because they couldn't keep a straight face any more. Once in the kitchen both burst out laughing. "Oh, that was priceless." Said Buffy. "Sure was." "Are you sure they'll find something?" "Darla's been cheating on her taxes for as long as I can remember. There's no way those two aren't going down." "Umm, I like that thought." Said Buffy going up to Angleus and kissing him. The rest of the afternoon was spent in the garden. Darla joined them but was basically lost in her own world until her phone rang. At which point she would answer, jump up and begin shouting at whoever was on the other end. Near the end of the picnic she was forced to ask for help. Once Buffy had left the table to get some thing from the kitchen she said, "Angelus. They've frozen my accounts, locked us out of the house, Hell I cant even afford to have a car pick me up even if I did have somewhere to go." She realised she was rambling. "Anyway. Is it OK if I stay with you, I don't know for how long."

"Well, I don't see a problem with it but you'd better check with Buffy. It's her home too now." Darla was speechless, she had to ask Buffy! She couldn't. No way was she crawling to her. But she had to. As Buffy returned Darla went to help her carry the tray out. "I'm fine, really Darla." Protested Buffy but Darla took the tray from her anyway. Once back at the table she asked. "Buffy." "Um?" Darla was visibly shaking. "I was wondering. You know the situation I'm in and well It's not easy to ask but is it OK if I stay with you two for a while until this whole mess is sorted out." "Oh, of course Darla. You need friends around at a time like this." Smiled Buffy sweetly. "Thank you." Said Darla almost too quietly to be heard, but Buffy did hear. "Your welcome. It's my pleasure to help." Darla was quiet for the rest of the day. As they went to leave Mrs Chase caught Angelus's arm and pulled him aside. "I assume you had something to do with this?" she asked. "Cordelia will fill you in on the details once we've gone." He answered quietly. "It was great to see you again." "You too. Buffy's lovely, I hope you are very happy together. And thank you for letting me witness this. If anyone deserved it it's Darla." They air kissed again and Angelus left to join the others. Darla took the other car from Buffy and Angelus this time leaving Willow and Xander free to ride with them. Angelus had a surprise for them. While they were in the Chase's the driver had installed a bug in the second car. Angelus turned the speakers on and they listened into the conversation between Darla and Riley. "Are you OK?" asked Riley. "Do I look OK!?" "Hey, keep your voice down, the driver could hear." "The screen is up you idiot, he cant hear a word we say." "Pardon me for breathing." They were silent for a few moments before Riley asked. "So I suppose the plan is off?" "Are you kidding? It's on even more now than before. No way would any court in the land convict the future queen. This isn't about what we want anymore, it's about keeping me out of prison." "I thought it was about saving Buffy?" "You dolt! It was about getting what we wanted." Another moment of silence. "And how do we do that now?" asked Riley. "I have a surprise planned for tonight."

"Care to let me in on it?" Darla sighed. "I'm planing to visit Angelus tonight OK?" "I'm not sure that's a good idea. They seem pretty tight him and Buffy." "They have separate bedrooms, how tight can they be. Besides, I can do things for Angelus that would make your toes curl." Riley didn't really want to know more so he shut up for the rest of the journey. Buffy, Willow, Xander and Angelus had enjoyed the show. All were laughing, Buffy even had tears rolling down her face. "Now I know what a fly on the wall feels like." She said between her laughs. That made everyone laugh harder. Back at the castle Buffy and Angelus headed for her room to discuss plans for Riley. He was such a boy scout that there was no dirt on him, which would make it more difficult to get him back than Darla was. "Plagiarism would destroy his reputation." Said Buffy. "But unless he actually has plagiarised someone's work it'll be very hard to set up." "True." They discussed other plans for a while until Angelus suggested it was time to wait for Darla next door. Buffy didn't want him to leave, she wanted to stay with him. Angelus insisted on handling this himself though and refused to let Buffy go with him. Angelus lay on his bed waiting for Darla to call. Truthfully he wasn't sure he could send her away. He did love Buffy but the waiting was driving him crazy. He knew that by not allowing her in here with him he was giving himself the freedom he would need with Darla. He also knew it would break Buffy's heart. He would make up his mind to send Darla away then change it. In truth he didn't know what his final decision would be until she got here. There was the knock. "Come in." he called. The door opened slowly. Buffy stood there in her white towelling robe. Angelus felt his anger beginning to rise. She was disobeying him, trying to force his hand. He rose off the bed and went to guide her out of the room. Buffy closed the door and turned back to him. He was halfway across the room as she undid the robe and let it fall to the floor. "I'm ready." She said standing there naked. Angelus stopped in his tracks and looked at her. God, she was beautiful. He went over to her and took her head in his hands. He kissed her, long and slowly. Buffy wrapped her arms around him and began to pull his shirt out of his trousers. Having freed it she put her hands up through the shirt and began running her hands over his back. Angelus's hands began to roam also. First his hands found their way to her back and caressed the soft skin there. Then they moved lower as he began to caress the cheeks of her butt. Buffy moaned. Angelus broke the kiss and looked into her eyes. They were aflame with desire, almost luminescent. His look asked if she wanted to proceed. She nodded gently.

Angelus scooped her off the floor and carried her over to the bed in a fireman's hold. He lay her gently in the middle of the bed and began to explore her body again. His hand went to her breast and she began to moan through their kiss. Buffy began undoing the buttons on his shirt and caressing his chest underneath. Angleus shrugged the shirt off to allow her easier access. Angelus then broke the kiss and moved his mouth down to her left nipple. His hand now gently snaked across her belly. Buffy parted her legs for him and he moved his hand down to her core. He began stroking her clit, gently at first. Buffy moaned. Angelus began to move his hand a little faster and rougher over her sensitive bud. He could feel her growing wet. Buffy began to paw at his belt buckle but it was just too far out of he reach to undo it. Angleus stopped briefly and undid them himself, quickly shoving the trousers down and off. Once as naked as her he went back to his work. Buffy gazed at his manhood. She had seen pictures but they weren't as big as this. She worried that he would hurt her until the movement of his hand again caused her cry out and she forgot her worries. Angelus now left his thumb to tease her clit as his fingers worked their way lower. He gently rubbed the lips surrounding her centre. Buffy now began to claw at his back, crazy with desire. The feel of her nails running over his skin almost drove Angelus over the edge. He held back though for if he entered Buffy when she wasn't ready he would hurt her. He now began to push two fingers in to her wet centre, gently moving then in and out as far as they would go while keeping the pressure up on her clit with his thumb. He could feel Buffy's orgasm building and knew this was the time. He moved between her legs and kissed her as he positioned his manhood at her entrance. He entered as far as he could go before hitting the barrier to her woman hood then gently began moving in and out. He continued to rub her clit with one hand. Buffy's breathing became shallow and her skin blushed. Angleus began to move both his hand and his manhood faster, although he still didn't breach her barrier. Finally he felt her contract around him as her orgasm hit, she cried out and Angelus plunged into her, tearing her virginity away from her. Buffy seemed not to notice immediately, she was lost in the pleasure he had given her. As her senses returned though she could feel him filling her, gently thrusting in and out. She was amazed that she hadn't felt anything. Angelus left her clit alone now for fear of over sensitising it. He concentrated on filling her. She was so tight he didn't think he could last much longer inside her. He bent his head to her neck and began to kiss her there. Buffy began to claw at his back again and lifted her hips off the bed to meet his thrusts. She could feel a second orgasm approaching. She cried his name out as she reached her climax again. The contraction of her walls around his member pushed Angelus over the edge also and he spilled his seed into her. Both lay there panting for a moment before Angelus rolled off and gathered Buffy into his arms, her back was to his chest. He gently began stroking her flank. He kissed her neck and whispered "Thank you." Buffy lay there wondering what she had done. She knew the real reason she had come here wasn't because she was ready. She had feared he would sleep with Darla. She knew it was for the wrong reasons but it felt so right. Buffy turned to face him. His look was one of rage. Buffy recoiled from him. "Was I not good?" she asked quietly. Angelus didn't meet her gaze, he was looking over her shoulder. Buffy looked the same way.

Darla was watching them from the doorway. Without saying a word she turned and left. Buffy was relieved she was gone and as she looked back at Angelus he was smiling at her. "You had me worried for a second there." She said. "You, Lover, were perfect." She kissed him lightly and lay her head on his outstretched arm. Her hand began tracing lazy circles on his chest. Once the post coital glow (as Buffy's magazines called it) had worn off she found she was sore. Hardly surprising since it was her first time but she wanted to do more and feared it would be painful. Thinking a bath would help she asked Angelus if he wanted to take one with her. He did. The tub was huge, about three times the size of a normal bathtub and oval in shape. It didn't take long to fill though since the water volume from the taps was much higher than in normal baths. Buffy added some bath pearls and foam to the water. "You trying to make me smell like a woman?" Angelus asked walking into the bathroom. "There in your room. Maybe you have secret desires you don't want to talk about." She teased. "The only desire I have is for you," he said as he took her in his arms and kissed her. When they eventually came up for air, they got in. Angleus sat at the rear of the tub and Buffy sat in front of him in between his legs, her back resting on him. Angelus wrapped his hands around her front and began massaging her breasts. Buffy leaned her head back to rest on him. "You like that?" he asked. "Umm, it's OK I guess" she teased. "Just OK?" he said. "Man, are you in for a good time." "Is that a promise?" "No, a threat." Buffy could feel his manhood pressing into the base of her back. She reached a hand behind herself and grabbed hold of him. It was Angeles's turn to groan this time as she began moving her hand up and down on his shaft. "You keep that up I'm going to have to ravish you again." He said Buffy moved her hand faster in reply. "That's it," he said picking her up and turning her to face him. "You asked for it." He said with a sly smile. But Buffy had other plans. She took control this time. With her hand underwater again still stroking him she leaned in and bit his lower lip. In reply Angelus used one hand to caress her breasts and the other to stimulate her clit again. They were moaning in unison. Buffy moved higher up him so she was straddling his hips and Angelus guided himself into her. Buffy sat down on him and continued to bite and kiss him. Slowly she began moving her hips up and down on him. Angelus wanted her to go faster but each time he tried to thrust into her she sat down again, pinning him to the bath. He eventually gave up and let her take

the lead. She began to pick up her pace once she realised the discomfort had gone. Angelus speeded up his ministrations on her clit and they continued moaning through their kisses. Buffy broke the kiss as she felt her climax nearing. She leaned her head back as it hit and cried his name. She didn't stop moving on Angelus though because she knew he hadn't cum yet. It didn't take long though once her muscles began squeezing him. Buffy collapsed onto his chest as the bathroom door burst open. Riley's eyes opened in shock at what he saw. "I... I..." "Can I help you?" asked Buffy. "Darla told me you were upset and when I heard you screaming. Well I" "As you can see, I'm fine." Buffy smiled as sweetly as she could under the circumstances. "That'd be your cue to leave." "Oh... right..." Riley turned and left. "Angelus." Said Buffy turning to him. "if you don't start locking that door your going to be in big trouble. At this rate we ought to have sold tickets and made a buck or two" Angelus laughed. And hugged her. "Are you OK?" he asked her. "I'm fine. I love you." "I love you too." They lay there until the water grew tepid before returning to bed.

The King and I Part 7 They awoke the next morning to pounding on the door. "Buffy! Angelus!" they heard Willow call. Buffy awoke first and called for Willow to come in. Willow was initially taken aback to see them both in bed together, naked but the point of her visit quickly redirected her thoughts. "It's Darla. She's locked herself in her room and is refusing to come out. Maria's worried she's going to hurt herself." Angelus heard the statement and sighed. "Not again." "She's done this before?" asked Buffy. "Always. If she doesn't get her way it's her form of emotional blackmail." "Has she ever hurt herself?" "Once." He didn't elaborate. "Well we have to help her. Revenge is one thing Angleus, letting her kill herself is another." Angelus agreed and Willow left the room as they changed. She was waiting in the hall as they emerged. They hurried off to Darla's room. "Miss Darla. Please come out." Called Maria through the door. "Angelus will not be happy if he finds out your

doing this. Don't hurt him again Miss Darla. Come out so we can talk about this." Maria saw Angelus approach and went along the hall to meet him. "How long has she been in there?" he asked. "A few hours." Angelus strode up to the door. "Darla! Get your ass out here or I'm coming in." "Go away." She called. Buffy quietly asked. "Is this a good idea? If she's suicidal shouting wont help." "She's not suicidal. It's her usual ploy. She's no more suicidal than you or I, she just hates to loose." "But if she's hurt herself before she could do it again." "That's why I have to get in there." To the door he shouted again. "You have three seconds to open this door. 1 2 3." He kicked the door in. Darla lay on the bed surrounded by empty drink bottles. Three tubs of pills lay on her nightstand. Angelus checked them, they looked pretty full so she probably hadn't taken an overdose. "Leave me alone." Darla said through her drunken haze. She spotted Buffy behind him. "And take your whore with you." Angelus pulled her upright on the bed and slapped her, hard. "Don't ever call her that and don't ever do something like this again." Darla laughed. "Oh, big tough man." Angelus shook her shoulders. "I mean it. I'm through with your games. The next time you try something like this I'll leave you to it." Fear passed through Darla's eyes. "No, no, don't leave me." Angelus pushed her back on the bed where she appeared to pass out. Angelus stormed out of the room talking the pills with him. "Maria, send someone to clear this mess up. Then get someone to stay with her. I don't want her trying anything else." Maria nodded. Angleus stormed off to the kitchen, Buffy followed behind him. Angleus emptied the pills out over the sink and flushed them down with water. Buffy then made him sit while she made coffee. As she waited for the kettle to boil she rubbed his shoulders, he was very tense and resisted her so she finished making the coffee and sat opposite him. "Are you OK?" she asked. Angelus shook his head. "Want to tell me about it?" Another shake. Buffy accepted that and they sat in silence. "She first did it when I was 14." He said finally. Buffy didn't reply she just nodded in case she stopped him talking. "she was 18 and was my first real girlfriend, when I broke up with her she slashed her wrists or wrist." Another long pause. "I was so frantic. I didn't know what to do. She was just lying there covered in blood. I called my father who called an ambulance for her. Ever since she's used the threat of doing it again to try and keep me."

Buffy reached over and took his hand. "I know it's blackmail," he continued. "I shouldn't give in but" "If you don't she might do it again." Buffy finished. Angelus nodded. "The psychiatrist who saw he after said the cut wasn't deep enough to kill. Said she was narcissistic with a histrionic personality disorder." Another pause. "I know she wouldn't kill herself but every time she does something like its it's like I'm 14 all over again." Buffy couldn't offer any words of wisdom. This was way out of her league. "Can I get you anything?" she asked. He shook his head. "I think I'll do some work." He rose from the table and kissed her forehead on his way out. Buffy sat trying to assimilate the information. Her hatred for Darla grew. How dare she use Angelus like that. The sooner the next part of their revenge was underway and she was out of their lives, the better. Then she remembered Riley. She had thought of a way to discredit him but hadn't had a chance to discuss it with Angelus. She didn't disturb him now but went to see Willow instead. Willow needed talking into helping Buffy. She finally agreed when Buffy threatened to do the spell alone. Willow knew she wasn't strong enough to handle the power of the spell. It took three hours but the spell was complete by 2pm. Both Buffy and Willow were exhausted and went to take a nap. Angelus woke Buffy at around 5. She smiled up at him. "Hey there, how are you doin''" she asked. Angelus smiled back. "Great, thanks to you." Buffy moved over on the bed so Angelus could lie next to her. "Naps? Aren't you a little old for those?" he asked. She lightly hit his arm. "Don't me mean. Anyway, willow and I did a spell on Riley, it kind of drained us." "What kind of spell?" Buffy wouldn't tell. "Just watch him closely tonight." She didn't want to ask the next question but she did. "How's Darla?" "Fine. She's got one hell of a hang over though and she's in a bitch of a mood." "Who's with her?" "Dean. He knows what she's like, he can handle her." Buffy nodded. "You know as much as I like this revenge thing it's kind of tiring. I hope it's over soon." Angelus kissed the top of her head. "It will be soon Lover," Darla hadn't been invited to dinner that night, she was still being watched by Dean. The others were all in attendance though. They sat down and the conversation began. It was a fairly good meal compared to others recently. Riley was fairly quiet and the conversation was mainly between Willow, Xander, Buffy and Angelus. They discussed the wedding plans, although Buffy refused to discuss the dress for fear it would jinx them.

Then the conversation turned to the party next Saturday. "Are you still coming Riley." Buffy asked. "What party?" he said. "Remember, on the picnic I told you we had a party for Oz's mom's birthday?" Riley looked blank. "And if you were still here you could come?" "What picnic?" he asked. "The day after you got here." Riley still looked blank. "Well if you still want to come your welcome to." "Um, thanks. I'll have to see what I'm doing." Buffy turned to Willow and said "So your positive she doesn't know?" "Not a clue according to Oz, she just thinks she's coming for dinner." They continued discussing decorating themes, food, drink and presents. That pretty much took up the rest of the dinner conversation. Although Riley didn't speak much he still showed a few memory lapses. Angelus watched in amusement wondering exactly what Buffy had done to him. He asked her in bed that night. She gave an evil smile. "We trashed his short term memory." She said. "How can an academic be an academic if he cant remember anything?" "So this is permanent?" he asked. "Nah, that would have been too cruel. 4 years or so. One cycle of the earth around the sun then he's free." "Lover, you are good." "Thank you. Your not so bad yourself." They made love again, slowly and tenderly before falling asleep in each others arms. "GET OFF ME!" Buffy heard Darla scream as she entered the dinging hall for breakfast. Dean followed behind trying to guide her back to her room. "It's OK dean." Said Buffy. "She's probably OK now." "If you say so." Said Dean, pleased to be rid of her. "I suppose you want me to thank you?" said Darla. "No. I wanted to commit you but Angelus insisted you weren't insane. Still, he promised me that if you ever try it again he will have you committed." Darla glared daggers at Buffy. Angelus entered and ignored Darla, heading straight for Buffy. "Morning Lover." "Morning." "Angelus, she said that you'll have me committed if I try something again. You wouldn't do that to me. You cant!" Shrieked Darla.

"I would and I can. Now shut up or I'll do it now." Darla knew he had the power, she kept quiet and sat down to eat breakfast. Riley entered a few moments later. "Hi." He said. "Does anyone know what day it is?" "Monday." Said Buffy. "Why?" "No reason, just couldn't think of it." "You've been awful forgetful lately." Said Buffy "It's probably just the stress of exams catching up with me. I'll be OK." Angelus tried hard to hide his smile but he wasn't completely successful. Buffy caught his grin and winked at him. The rest of breakfast was pretty much silent. Two hours later Angelus was interrupted in his study by one of his security guards. It appears Darla and Riley had agreed to meet in the grounds. Security used a long range directional microphone to record the conversation. Angelus read the transcript. D - So, you remembered where to meet me then? R - I'm not senile. D - Could have fooled me. (pause) Anyway we need to talk about what to do next? R - Next? D - With Buffy and Angelus. You remember don't you? R - I remember they don't seem to want us to interfere. They look happy together. D - Don't you remember Buffy told you the truth? R - What truth? D - You told me yesterday that Buffy said she didn't love Angelus. She was only staying because she didn't want him to hurt her family. Remember? You said she was only playing at happy families so no body worried about her. R - No, cant say I do remember. D - Riley! Honestly, get with the program. You told me that stuff. Now, we have to help Buffy. Are you with me? R - I guess. I don't want her to be unhappy. D - Good, now Angleus is going away tomorrow, Buffy has to stay so we can use that time to work on her. R - How? D - You let me worry about that, you just play along. She'll probably be upset, comfort her. R - OK. Angelus didn't believe what Darla had said about Buffy. He knew her too well to believe Buffy had said that

about their relationship. Darla was obviously using Riley memory lapses to her advantage. He wished he could stay but he had to attend a meeting with OPEC in Texas. Of he didn't go fuel prices could skyrocket. He wondered if Buffy could come with him. She had refused since she had an opening arranged with the Aids charity. We went to find her. Buffy was on the phone to her parents in her bedroom when Angelus found her. He waited for her to finish then showed her the transcript. "I think you should come with me." Said Angelus. "I cant. I cant let them down. This is the first event they've asked me to attend, how would it look if I pulled out?" "They'll understand. I don't want you alone with her." "I can handle her." Buffy went over and sat on Angelus's lap. "I know you want to protect me but you wont always be there. I have to learn to look after myself." Angelus nodded. "But if she hurts you she'll wish she was never born." Buffy smiled at his over protective nature and kissed him. "Go, do your job. I'll be fine. I have Willow and Xander to look after me if I need them." "Just take care. She can be a real bitch when the mood takes her." "I'd noticed." Angelus left on his trip the next evening, he would be away for 2 nights. Buffy and Angelus didn't want to say goodbye and if Angelus hadn't had Air Force One he would have missed his flight. Eventually he left promising to call when he arrived. Next morning Buffy awoke determined not to let Darla get to her. There had been no communication between Darla and Riley since they met in the garden so she didn't know what they had in mind, she was sure she could handle it non the less. Her resolve didn't last long. Just before lunch Dean knocked on her door. "Buffy. I don't really know how to say this." He began. "It can't be any worse than something's I've been through lately, just spit it out." Dean looked uncertain, then he produced a copy of the Enquirer from behind his back. Buffy took it and read the cover. There was a huge picture of her under the headline "Future Queen in Sex Scandal Shocker!" She turned to the relevant page. She didn't need to read the whole article to get the gist; the bullet points gave her the story. She slept with men on a regular basis She enjoyed drug and sex orgies 6 men in one night! Videoed by another party goer Doggie was her favourite position

And at the end of the article was a doctored shot of her with cum covering her face. Buffy's breath became ragged, she couldn't breath. Willow and Xander burst in at that point, Dean had fetched them. "Buffy, what is it?" asked Xander. She showed them the article which they looked at together. "Oh my god. Buffy!" said Willow. Buffy didn't reply, her emotions were too raw. She knew she had to expect press attention but she didn't realise it would be so brutal. "We have to find out who said these things." Said Xander. Buffy still didn't reply but Willow agreed, they called Giles. "Um hello." Began Giles. "I need to speak with a Mr Wilson." "Please hold." Said the receptionist. Giles listened to music as he waited to be connected. "Billy Wilson." "Aah, Mr Wilson," said Giles. "My name is Rupert Summers," Joyce's maiden name. "I was wondering if I could speak to you about your article on Buffy Giles." "Aah, had a lot of feedback on that one. So what did you think?" Giles paused so he didn't scream at the bastard. "Excellent." He choked out. "That's why I'm calling. I work for the Sun newspaper in London. We're very interested in buying the story from you." "Yeah, well so are a lot of others." "Yes, of course. However my editor had given me a blank cheque. He wants this story Mr Wilson, providing it comes with sources." "Well the asking price is $1,000,000." Bill bluffed. Giles paused, appalled by the thought of people selling lies about his daughter. Bill took the pause as a refusal. "Too rich for your blood?" "No, I believe my editor will go for it. However, as I said, he will require the names of your sources." "Yeah yeah. I get that but you know, people don't want that stuff revealed. They speak in confidence." "Of course. And that's exactly how the names will stay, between my editor and myself. We don't want other people getting the story first do we?" "Well OK, the main source for the article was Parker Abrams." Giles remembered him. Buffy and he had one date, he tried to take things too far and she'd left. He remembered how upset she was when she got home. "Um, my editor insists on at least two sources before he runs the story. He wont agree to $1,000,000 unless he has that." "OK, OK, but this has to stay hush hush. She's very scared that will reflect badly on her." "I understand. Rest assured I shant contact her unless I have your permission first." "Good enough." He said seduced by the thought of a million dollars. "It's Darla Muhsen." "Oh, I understand the need for secrecy. I'll see my editor now. I'll get back to you this afternoon."

"Good doing business with you Mr Summers." "The pleasure was all mine." Giles hung up and stopped the recorder. He called Buffy. Willow answered. "That BITCH! Oh she is so dead." Buffy went to storm out of the room to pound on Darla. "Wait, Buffy, remember the plan?" said Willow restraining her. "This wasn't part of the plan." "No, I know. But if she know's your on to her..." "Buffy took a deep breath. "Your right. I'm calling Angelus lawyer." Neither objected. The papers suing for slander arrived by courier two hours later. Buffy wanted to serve them now but Willow and Xander told her to hold off. Saturday was the time for all of this if she could just wait until then. "Buffy!" said Darla coming into her room. "I just saw the article, you poor dear." She hugged Buffy. It took all Buffy's strength not to pound on her. "Those press people are such vultures. Its unfortunate but life when you're famous." She continued. Buffy took a deep breath. "It's OK. I understand that. And no one actually believes the Enquirer." "Oh but they do Buffy. You'd be surprised at the stories that appear in there then in the mainstream press." Buffy didn't say anything about the gagging order that Robert had already had filed. No other papers would dare touch the story now. Instead she replied calmly. "I'll deal with that when I have to." "It's such a shame Angelus left you though. How could he leave at a time like this? Has he called you?" "He doesn't know. I haven't told him." "But you have to Buffy. He shouldn't be in Texas talking with business men when you need him." "I don't need him. And he's doing important work. I'm not disturbing him." Darla tried willow and Xander. "You think he should be here don't you?" "Buffy's right " said Willow. "Angelus needs to be where he is." "Seconded." Said Xander. "Well," said Darla facing Buffy again, "It's just a good job I'm here to help you." Buffy almost choked on her next reply. "Me too." She paused. "I really need to be alone, do you guys mind?" "No," said Will and Xander in unison. "We're not leaving you Buffy. You need people at a time like this." Buffy's look told them to remove Darla. Xander guider her out saying. "Leave her be, she'll ask for us if she needs us." "Maybe Riley could help you." Was Darla's last ditch effort to keep the situation under her control as the door

shut behind her. Buffy locked it. Angelus didn't hear the news until he came out of the meeting, it had lasted 10 hours but he finally had an agreement between the US oil producers and OPEC. His secretary cornered him on his way out and told him. Angelus called Buffy. Buffy lay on her bed trying to relax when the phone rang. "Hello?" "Buffy, I just heard." "I didn't want to disturb you. How did the meeting go?" "Fine," Angelus said dismissively. "But how are you?" "I'm OK." "OK first we need to call my lawyer, Robert. His number's in my..." "It's OK, we called." Buffy told him the whole story. "DARLA! Oh that woman has no idea of the pain that's about to descend on her!" he yelled. He was proud of Buffy's handling of the situation but mad that she's had to endure it. "Keep calm angelus, it's under control. We just have to wait until Saturday." Angelus sighed, he knew that was best. He still wanted to hurt Darla though. "I'll be back as soon as I can." "No, really I'm fine. Finish your work, get a good nights sleep then come home." Angelus didn't reply. "OK?" "OK," he finally agreed. "I love you." "I love you too Buffy." They hung up. Buffy was getting changed for bed. She was sleeping in Angelus's room because it made her feel close to him. She suddenly felt him behind her. Angelus reached his hands round her waist and planted a kiss on her neck. "My boyfriend gets awful angry when people do that." She said. "Then maybe you shouldn't go around sleeping in other peoples rooms." "Maybe, but the guy who sleeps here is just too handsome to resist. He'd be mad if he knew you were doing this though" "Don't worry about it." Said Angelus. "We're very tight, he wont mind." "In that case..." Buffy turned to face him and kissed him.

"Umm, just the welcome home I was after." He smiled. "There's more." She lightly kissed him again. "A lot more." She jumped up and wrapped her legs around his waist. Angelus kicked the door closed with his foot and ripped Buffy's top open. Buffy reached between them and undid his fly, Angelus groaned as she took his member out. He moved so Buffy was pinned to the wall then lifter her skirt up and ripped her panties off. Buffy was panting in anticipation. "Now!" she cried. Angelus plunged into her waiting depths and kissed her neck as he thrust in to her. "Oh, oh." Buffy cried over and over. Angelus began teasing Buffy's nipples with his thumb causing Buffy to moan harder. He pounded into her mercilessly. They had only been apart for a day but he felt like he hadn't seen her in months. Buffy cried out as her orgasm approached and Angelus emptied himself into her. They stood panting. "That was... that was..." Buffy tried to say. "Awesome." "Yeah." "I never knew you were such an animal, Lover." Smirked Angelus. "Neither did I. You just bring it out in me." Angelus continued nibbling on her neck as he carried her to the bed. "I needed that." Said Buffy. Angelus kissed her. "Me too." Darla wasn't mentioned. Slowly they drifted off to sleep in each other's arms. The King and I Part 8 Buffy awoke to see the space next to her empty. She looked around and saw Angelus sitting at his desk going through his messages. He heard her move and looked over to her. "Morning." He smiled. "Hi. What you got there?" "Just messages from while I was away." He looked for another pile of messages on his desk and handed them to Buffy. "These are yours from yesterday. Dean thought it best not to disturb you with them." Buffy took them and began looking through. Most were charity related, a few "old friends" called to see how she was, get some dirt was closer to the mark in Buffy's opinion. Then there was a message from the AIDS charity. "Oh God!" she said. Angelus looked over to her. "What?" "The opening for the AIDS charity. I totally forgot about it." She said mortified. "Is that who the message is from?" he asked. "Yeah, Teresa. She said she understands and we can reschedule when I'm free." Buffy put her head in her hands. "They probably want nothing to do with me now. Not only did I stand them up but I'm the USA's

premier slut." Angelus went and sat beside her on the bed. He gently forced her to look at him. "They do not think that. I promise you. And no one could expect you to do a public appearance after something like that." Buffy wasn't buying. "I just can't do it Angelus, I can't reschedule it. All those reporters, they're all going to be asking questions about the article. I can't face that." "Then how about we face it together." Buffy smiled at his kind offer but said. "You have enough to do without babysitting me." "This isn't babysitting. It's PR. We have to deny these allegations as soon as possible and presenting a united front is the best way. I'll call them and see if we can switch the day to today. OK?" Buffy was scared. She had done other events but she knew this one would be much worse. She nodded her agreement though. If she didn't face this now she would have to later, so Angelus was right, it was best to get it over with. Angelus called Teresa to reschedule the opening. It would take some work but they decided it could be done by 3pm. Teresa was thrilled to have Angelus there too since it would guarantee ten times the media exposure after the Enquirer article. It would also help Buffy to have him there. Teresa understood the power of the media but she didn't underestimate its viciousness. She didn't envy Buffy one jot. Buffy and Angelus pulled up to the new shelter and entered from the rear. Security was tight due to the volume of reporters around but security kept them away so no reporters were around to see them arrive. Angelus could feel Buffy shaking as she held his hand. First was the ribbon cutting and opening ceremony. The reporters were all instructed not to ask any questions during this stage. Any reporter who tried would be kept out of the press conference afterwards. Teresa began the ceremony with a few words about the charity's work and what they hoped to achieve with this new shelter. Buffy and Angelus stood to the side of the stage watching her. Most of the cameras seemed aimed at them, not Teresa. Teresa finished by thanking those who had helped them raise funds and introduced Buffy. Buffy walked onto the stage and stood next to Teresa. The flash bulbs went crazy and Buffy had to raise her hand to her eyes to so she could see through the flashes. "Welcome, thank you all for coming. I understand you all have questions, rest assured they will all be answered later. In the mean time I'd like to thank Teresa for inviting me here on this special ." She continued her speech as Angelus watched her from the side, a small smile playing at his lips. She was perfect. If he hadn't known how nervous she was beforehand he wouldn't have guessed this bothered her at all. She cut the ribbon then invited the reporters to a separate room for the Press Conference. She then retreated to Angelus's side and they went behind the scenes again to wait for the reporters to settle. The room put aside for the conference was packed to capacity. Reporters, cameramen and photographers filled every inch of the room. As Buffy and Angelus waited for them to settle he told her how proud he was of how she handled herself. He also told her not to worry about the conference, the reporters may be harsh but he was sure she could handle it. Buffy managed a smile, and then it was time for them to face the firing squad. They walked out to another barrage if flashbulbs. They took their seats and Angelus called for quiet. The reporters complied. "I'm sure you've all seen the Enquirer article, in fact I'm sure that's the only reason you're here. We will

answer all questions you have; we just ask that you don't turn this into a circus. Who's first?" Everyone raised their hands, Angelus picked a female reporter, one he knew from other conferences. She stood to ask the question "Buffy, is there any truth in the allegations?" "None what so ever." She replied simply. Darla sat alone in her room watching the conference live on CNN. She had asked Riley to join her but he was spending more and more time alone in his room, she might as well not have brought him for all the good he was doing. Neither Buffy or Angelus looked upset. Darla just hoped the questions would become more difficult. "What about the picture that appeared with the article? Have you any comment on that?" asked another reporter. "It's doctored. Our Lawyer is trying to obtain the original as we speak so we can prove this." Answered Buffy. "Angelus, has this affected your relationship with Buffy at all?" Buffy and Angelus smiled at each other. Angelus looked back to the reporter and answered "No, not at all." "Did you believe the article when you first saw it?" asked another reporter. "I haven't seen the article, I was just told of it's contents. But no, I didn't believe a word." "Why?" "I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that Buffy didn't do those things. That's all I'm prepared to say on the matter." "Do you know who's behind the allegations?" Angelus paused. "We have people looking into it." "Buffy, how does this make you feel?" Buffy paused to collect her thoughts. "Hurt I guess. Someone I know must have made this stuff up and it hurts me to think anyone would do that." "Has this changed your feelings for Angelus at all or taking on the role of Queen?" "It's opened my eyes somewhat. I hope I'll never have to deal with something like this again but I know that if I do have to, I can handle it. As for Angelus, no, I love him just as much as I did before, this wont tear us apart." The conference continued in a similar vein and when Buffy and Angelus finally left they did so holding hands. Darla stared at the broken TV. She had thrown an ashtray at it in rage and shattered the screen. She couldn't believe this wasn't getting to them. And they had come off so well, no one would believe the article now. She paced up and down the room trying to become calm again so she could think. Buffy and Angelus got back into the car and she leaned into him as it drove away.

"You did good." Said Angelus kissing the top of her head. "I hope I never have to do it again." she replied. "Me too. It's nearly over Lover, just 2 more days." Very little was seen of Darla or Riley in the two days leading up to the party. Riley decided to leave the day before the party. He hoped once home things would return to normal with his mind. He wouldn't be so lucky but Buffy was pleased he was going. Darla was probably planing another scheme but since she wasn't communicating with Riley any more they had no idea as to what it was. Angelus was confident they could handle it though. He just hoped the party would come before her next plan. He called Penn, the chief of police to make sure everything was OK. On the day of the party willow performed her spell on Darla. It would last for three days, which was more than enough time. The effects could be seen immediately. Everyone was dressed and waiting in the dining hall for the guests to arrive. Darla came in shortly after. "Ugh, this place looks like a reject from a bad kids movie." She greeted them with. Buffy and Willow shared a smile. "We like it." They said in unison. "What? Miss No class and Miss little country bumpkin? Please I've got more taste in my little finger than you too have in your entire bodies." She went to pick up a glass of wine but Buffy stopped her. "Please, you're a guest, I'll get it." She said sweetly. "Oh cut the little miss perfect act!" snapped Darla. "Darla!" said Angelus. "I think you'd better explain yourself." Darla turned to Angelus. "And you can piss off too." She said as she stormed off into the kitchen. "I'd say that was working like a charm guys." Said Xander. "Yep, and as the evening goes on she'll have more and more desire to tell the truth." Smiled Buffy. An hour later the party was in full swing. Only Oz and his mother were left to arrive. Angelus left the guess briefly to meet with Penn who should be waiting by the back entrance. Penn was here with 2 deputies and 2 IRS agents. Angelus shook his hand. "Good to see you again Penn." "Likewise. We're ready to roll when ever you are." "How many charges against her in the end?" Penn consulted his notepad. "27 were found but she's only being charges with the 18 most serious offences. And I know it's a civil case but I have the slander papers to serve for you too." Angelus smiled. "What the IRS doesn't fine her I'll sue out of her." Penn grinned back. "Sweet revenge. Is here anything better." He had more than his fair share of run ins with Darla and would be more than happy to finally see some charges stick. "Oh, and I don't think there will be any problems with the confession, just interview her as many times as you can in the next 3 days."

Penn looked sceptical. "What about her lawyer? He wont let her talk." "By the time you have her she'll be singing her little heart out and no lawyer is going to stop her." "Great. Lets bag this Bad Girl." And they entered the house. Angelus guided them to the dining room. He spotted Darla and they headed for her. Buffy saw him approach and went to stand beside him. Willow and Xander joined them. "Darla Muhsen?" said Penn. Darla turned to face him. "What of it?" Penn produced a pair of handcuffs and cuffed her as he said, "I am arresting you of charges of tax evasion, you do not have to say anything but anything you do say will be taken down and used in evidence against you." Darla spun to face him once the handcuffs were placed on her wrists. "You can't touch me you prick." "I can and I have. Do you have anything you wish to say regarding the charges against you?" "Like what? I did it? Sure I did. But there's no way I'm going down for this. No way in hell. Now lets get this over with." She went to move out of the room. Penn held her back. "There's one more thing." He said producing an envelope from behind his back. "I'm serving papers on you." "Papers? For what?" she asked. "Deformation of character and slander." He removed the papers from the envelope and showed Darla. She scanned them until she saw Buffy and Angelus's names. They could see from her expression that she knew she'd been the one played. She turned and hurled herself at them screaming. "You bastards!" Buffy and Angelus sidestepped her and she landed in a heap on the floor still screaming at them. She stayed on the floor trying desperately to get up, unfortunately, since her hands were behind her back she couldn't. Pretty soon everyone in the room was laughing at her. "You'll pay for this! You'll all pay for this!" she said as the two policemen dragged her to her feet. Similar threats were directed at them as she was escorted out. Buffy turned to Angelus and hugged him. "Gone for ever." "Yes. Just you and me from now on." Agreed Angelus. "Hey!" said Xander. "And your friends." Grinned Angelus. Oz arrived fifteen minutes later with his mother. She was totally surprised by the party and pleased. The rest of the evening went well. Dinner was superb, the dancing even better. Even Cordie's effervescence couldn't bring Buffy down. They retired early though begging fatigue as the reason. No one bought it. Buffy arose the next morning to see suitcases stacked by the bedroom door. "You're throwing me out?" She said teasingly.

"No Lover. We going on holiday." "We are? Where?" "The Bahamas. Two weeks." Buffy hugged him. Buffy said good-bye to Will, Oz, Xander and Cordie and they left. Rather than air force one though they took a smaller jet. Buffy thought it odd but didn't mention it. They arrived late afternoon Bahamas time and went straight to the hotel. Angelus had reserved the penthouse in the top hotel on the islands, the Keays Hotel. The penthouse was bigger than most houses and exquisitely decorated. The view looked out over the beach one side and the island the other. "It's beautiful." Said Buffy looking out over the balcony. "Not as beautiful as you." For the evening mean Angelus had arranged for them to eat in the room. A waiter served each course then left them in peace until he was called back. They discussed the future mainly. Now all the obstacles were out of the way they were free to plan it. Buffy would soon have to take on a larger role in the running of the country, as the law dictated, and Angelus explained a bit about how things would work. She was daunted by the prospect but Angelus assured her he'd be there to help. As the desert plates were cleared away angelus grew pensive. "Something wrong?" Buffy asked "I, um," Angelus moved to the seat next to Buffy. "I've never done this before. Sorry if I get it wrong." Buffy looked puzzled. "What?" "I love you Buffy, more than anyone. I'd do anything for you. I know we're engaged and all but that was more of a formality so." He got down on one knee and produced a ring box. He opened it and produced a diamond solitaire ring. "Buffy, will you marry me?" Buffy's tears fell as she threw her arms around him. "Yes. Yes angelus, I will marry you." They broke the hug and Angelus slipped the ring on her finger. "It's just a shame we have to wait so long." She said as he sat back on his chair. "Well that was something else I was planning to ask you. We didn't come here for a holiday Buffy. We came for a honeymoon. I have the minister and everything arranged. If you're happy we can get married tomorrow." Buffy felt the tears brimming up as she asked, "What about the big wedding we have to have?" "We'll still have to have it. But this one will be for us. Small, just like you wanted" Buffy hugged him again. "This is so perfect. I just wish my parents and friends could be here to share it with me. "They are."

Buffy looked at him in shock. "Here?" She asked. Angelus nodded. "They flew out on air force one a few hours after we left. Their downstairs having our engagement shower now." "But I don't have a dress or anything? I can't marry you in a bikini." "That's why I brought Chris. She has a selection of her best wedding dresses with her." "You think of everything don't you?" "No Lover. I just think of you." The next morning angelus waited on the beach for his bride to arrive. The minister was ready, the guests in place, now they just needed Willow, Cordelia and Buffy to show up. The dress was casual for a wedding. Formal shoes in the sand would never work. Then the orchestra began and he saw Buffy. Willow and Cordie preceded her wearing dark blue dresses and bare feet. Buffy followed behind on the arm of her father. Her dress was simple off white. Low V neck cut, full skirt, bare feet. She looked fantastic. She carried a small bouquet of white lilies. "Who gives this woman to this man?" asked the Minister. "I do." Replied Giles as he handed his daughters hand to Angelus. "Then let us begin." The ceremony went smoothly. Buffy's breath caught when he asked if anyone knew a reason they should not marry. It was silly, Darla was thousands of miles away but Buffy was relieved non-the less when no one stood up. They exchanged rings and Angelus kissed her. The guests cheered. The reception was held at a beach side bar that overlooked the sand. It was a simple affair, music, chatting, small speeches, lots of romance. As Angelus and Buffy retired for the evening they kissed everyone good-bye before retreating to their room. "Thank you." Said Buffy. "It's been perfect." Angelus kissed her in reply, picked her up and carried her to the bedroom. "I love you Buffy." "I love you too Angelus." Epilogue Darla was tried and convicted, along with her father two months later. Her sentence was 5-10 years. The IRS fined her $5,000,000 in unpaid taxes. The civil trial was a month after that. It wasn't until then that she realised for how long Buffy and Angelus had been on to her. They read her text messages out in court, the transcripts of her conversations with Riley, the tape of Giles talking with the Enquirer reporter. He also turned into a witness for Angelus to avoid a similar suit being filed against him and his paper. They jury, needless to say found for Buffy and Angelus and awarded damages of $3,200,000, the rest of

Darla's fortune. As she was about to be lead from court Angelus stood and asked the judge if he could make an announcement. The judge agreed. He announced to the world, live on TV that he and Buffy had married in the Bahamas but reassured people there would be a public ceremony later. Darla began laughing as he announced this. The guards tried to remove her from the courtroom but she became violent, screaming at Buffy and Angelus, lashing out at the guards. Once she was back in her cell she had to be sedated to calm down. As she lay there, strapped to the bed Buffy and Angelus paid a visit. She looked over to them and began laughing again but it was a weak, mirthless laugh. "The happy couple." She said weakly, tears falling from her eyes. Angelus walked over to the bed and leaned in, close to her ear. He whispered, "I hope you enjoy your sentence because if you ever get free your life will be a living hell. I promise you." Darla began screaming again, trying to break her restraints. The Doctor arrived and gave her a stronger sedative. He advised Angelus that he was having her committed for a two-week evaluation. "What did you say to her in there?" asked Buffy. As they left. "Nothing that concerns you Lover." At the end of the two weeks angelus received a call from her psychiatrist. He confirmed her personality disorder as histrionic and also said she was now semi catatonic. The only time she showed any life was when Buffy or Angelus's names were mentioned and she either laughed hysterically or became violent. She would be held indefinitely. Once Darla's fate was sealed Buffy and Angelus returned to Sunnydale briefly, the main reason was to see Riley. He was in a nursing home. The careers explained that once his memory became too bad his parents went able to cope. They had also diagnosed amnesia as the cause. It was a rare condition, they said that usually occurred after head trauma. There were those who could function relatively normally with no short term memory, unfortunately Riley wasn't one of them. Since he'd realised that his memories were failing he now spent all his time on memory tests and crossword puzzles. The staff told them that Riley did it in the hopes of getting his memory back. Buffy and Angelus went to see him. He was doing a logic puzzle in his room. Buffy called his name three times before he noticed her. "Some academic." He said simply. Buffy felt a twang of guilt seeing him so pathetic but then she remembered what he had tried to do to her. He was ignoring them both again, concentrating on the puzzle. "Riley." Said Buffy from the doorway. He looked up again. "Just remember, don't mess with me again, you might just end up worse." Confusion clouded Riley's face. "Huh?"

Buffy smiled cryptically and they left. "He won't remember that you know?" said Angelus as they left. "He will. When this wears off he'll get all his memories back. He'll know who put him there." Six months later Buffy and Angelus's official wedding was televised. The nurses at the mental home agreed to let Darla watch from a padded cell, they pushed a TV up to he glass so she could watch. She was also wearing a straight jacket for her own protection. As the ceremony played out Darla began laughing. When the wedding was over she never spoke again. Riley also watched from his nursing home. He knew there was something Buffy had done to him, she had told him. He couldn't for the life of him remember what it was though and soon got distracted by his puzzles again. Willow and Oz watched from inside the church and remembered their own wedding day as they say Buffy and Angelus's unfolding. They held hands. Oz's mother had died a few months ago and Oz was now Earl and in charge of her territory. Willow, needless to say, now lived with Oz but they were frequent visitors to the castle as were Buffy and Angelus to their home. Cordelia and Xander also watched from the church. Cordelia wished Xander would ask her to marry him, he never seemed to take the hint though. Cordie now worked for her father in his communications company. Xander owned a bar that Cordie had brought him for his birthday. He also lived above the bar rather than at the castle anymore. They had more privacy that way. Unknown to Cordie, Xander did have am engagement ring, he just couldn't seem to find the right time to ask. Buffy and Angelus curled up together in bed that night after another marathon love making session, safe in each others arms and certain that no one would ever pull them apart again. "Angelus." "Yes Lover." "I have something to tell you." Angelus kissed her neck. "Um?" "I'm pregnant." The end
