AIRCRAFT CONSTRUCTION Each plane has parts of a particular building where the each part has its own role to enable the aircraft to land and fly safely. Construction of fixed wing aircraft (fixed wing): a. Fuselage This is the main body of the aircraft, to which the wings and tail are attached. Usually, construction in corporate frames and bulkheads that make up the individual compartments or sections of an airplane and strengthen the fuselage. b. Tail Section This portion of an aircraft consists of vertical and horizontal stabilizers, rudders, and elevators (empennage). c. Cockpit Compartment where the pilots sit to fly the aircraft.

d. Engine Nacelle The motive that powers the airplane and allows it to travel. May be piston-driven propeller, turboprop, or jet engines. e. Landing gear The understructure usually, wheels, tires, and struts supporting the weight of an aircraft when it is not in the sky. Also called the undercarriage.

There are some areas in construction of an airplane that can be mobilized to control the movement of aircraft either while flying and landing. The four parts are: a. Aileron A control surface that consists of a moveable, hinged portion of an aircraft wing. Ailerons usually are part of the trailing edge of a wing. Their primary function is to help tilt the wing when an aircraft is banking. b. Elevators The movable horizontal portion of the tail of an aircraft. The elevator is hinged to the rear of the horizontal stabilizer and controll ed by the pilot to move the aircrafts nose up or down or to level its flight position. c. Rudder The upright, moveable part of the tail assembly, which controls the direction of the aircraft.

d. Flaps These adjustable airfoils are attached to the leading or trailing edge of the wings, affecting the aircrafts aerodynamic performance during landings and takeoffs. Usually extended during landings and takeoffs. Ailerons Flaps Rudder
