Musical Texture Generalities & Bassline/Accompaniment Business

Generalities
Instrumentation: The instruments or voices for which a piece or song is written. Melody: The main idea...or one of them. If you find yourself humming it in the shower, its probably a melody. Register: General portions of an instruments/voices range...generally referred to in terms of low, middle, or upper. Solo, soli: One player/singer or a small group. Tessitura: A fancy word for range. Tutti: All together now!

Bassline/Accompaniment Business
Alberti bass: Specific pattern for arpeggiating chords: low-high-middle-high. Ostinato: A repeated rhythm or pitch/interval pattern, frequently in the lower/bass voice(s). Walking bass: A bassline that steadily walks along, regardless of what the other voices are doing. Chordal accompaniment: Accompaniment in which the melody is supported by blocked or broken chords. Chordal homophony/chordal texture: Chorale-style writing in which melody and accompaniment move with the same rhythm (homorhythmic).
