UNIT II: I) Bridges


Q.1. Design one top, one bottom, one vertical and one diagonal member for the footbridge truss. Assume: a) Span of truss = 20 m b) Height of truss = 1.60 m c) Width of bridge = 2 m d) Panels width of truss = 2.50 m e) Live load on bridge = 4 KN/m2 f) R.C.C. flooring 150 mm thick. Q.2. Unit II: ii) Bearings


Q.1. a) State the different types of bearing. Explain any two types in details. b) State the factors for selection of types of bridges. Explain in details. Q.2. The dead load, live load and impact load reaction at the end of a bridge girder as 1300 KN. The vertical reaction of each end of a girder due to overcoming effect of wind is 60 KN. Design the roller bearing. The least allowable perpendicular distance between the faces of adjacent roller after their revolved position may be taken as 6 mm. The center of roller travels 25 mm. Section B Unit III: Storage Vessels; Q.1. Design an overhead rectangular water tank 1,00,000 litres. The height of columns of staging is 6 m. Depth of water in the tank shall not exceed 2.50 m. Design: a) Bottom plates b) T- stiffners (T- covers) c) Side plates d) Stays e) Check for composite T- section as stiffners. Q.2. Design Container for an overhead steel water tank to store 75,000litres of water. Choose suitable dimension for base, height of the containers and free board. Q.3. Design Container for an overhead steel water tank to store 70,000 litres of water. Choose suitable dimension for base, height of the containers and free board. Q.4. An overhead rectangular water tank consists of a container of plan dimensions 7.5 m * 12.5 m and height 2.5 m. The tank is supported at two-tier beam system placed on top of four columns. C/C distance between columns along shorter span of container is 6.2 m while longer span of container it is 11.3 m. Design: i) Bottom plates of container and joint between two plates. ii) Upper tier and lower tier of beams, Assume adequate spacing and number of beams. Q.5. Design rectangular overhead steel water tank of capacity 1,20,000 litres of water. The height of staging is 8 m. Depth of water in tank shall not exceed 2.4 m. Design upto upper tier beams. Section B Unit III: Steel Bunkers ;Open web sections Q.1. Design rectangular steel bunker of 11 m length and 5.5 m width supported on eight columns (four along each long side) to store coal of bulk density 8 KN/m3 and angle of internal friction 35o , height of vertical portion 3.8 m , height of hopper portion is 3.8 m . Q.2.
