After perhaps a dozen hours online reading and trying to sort this out, I am convinced that someone on THIS forum may be able to help me. Long-story short: I have a 1TB iomega Home Media Network drive (Christmas gift from brother) which is loaded.... upgraded my netgear rounter to "n" and it never showed-up normal again. renamed the drive...each folder has a question-mark over the icon and icon is different, cant open any of them. Spent hours on phone with iomega tech; bi-passed router (cat5 right into the PC)(vista)... did ipconfig, net view, ping and it is there but can not use or write to the drive (shows as an ip address and also on the network). Took iomega appart, removed a seagate baracudea 1tb and ran it to USB port, and can "see it". Bought online a program called reclaime... with russian IT gal saying that the recovered data should be showing up in "EXT" folder, not in "RAW". What shows in RAW looks like music and movies etc., but is just numbers not names and looks incomplete or too small to be real. EXT has many folders but no usable files (yet). I am at 88% now on that front. Have NOT written to the drive. ** reclaime IT gal says that it appears that my partition table is gone (?) missing. I know the thing is full, still hot-wired (out of case) to the USB here.... and it just FEELS like there is a simple fix, an easy re-establish of whatever this partition table is that "unlocks" and shows the contents of this thing. Have plenty of screen shots that I can provide, but I need to get this sorted out... and not blow $1k on pro data recovery . HELP

last night downloaded and have not yet used or installed any of these (following the 'partition is missing' logic from the reclaime IT) : TestDisk 6.11.3 PartRecoveryDemo FindandMount by AFF data recovery Disk-Repair-demo.iso (as well as KNOPPIX whatever that is). I know PC's but not linyx (at all) and these NAS black-boxes were / are a mystery. Learning as I go here. Possible cause? (ready for this?) - only hunch I have is that when installing the new netgear router which sits right next to this little iomega box, I plugged the a/c power supply which is identical in plug format and size, into each-other. So the iomega may have had the netgear a/c going to it for maybe 30 minutes. Something caught my ear and I noticed both A/C are identical (plug, NOT amps) and then re-plugged correctly. Would that event have left the NAS full.... intact, but messed up the partition table (?) I dont know. It is a theory as to what 'changed' here.... my best hunch. A new router alone would not confuse the NAS to that extent I am sure.

That knoppix cd should be able to read your data. The disk has three partitions, 1-primary, About 4GB, filesystem ext3, contains Linux 2-primary, The whole disk minus 4GB, filesystem xfs, contains the userdata 3-primary, About 25 MB, no filesystem, contains bootloader and kernel. despite the partition numbers, partition 3 is actually at the start of the disk.

Downloading Knoppix now (takes a LONG @ss time!)... but am also now running ZAR 9 to read against the seagate drive. Reclaime did not work (only showed data and folders, but not usable data. names of files, turned to number instead). Free gamble, ZAR will cost $30 if it shows anything, but I am mostly optimistic that symple Linux shell OS (Knoppix) can find and pull the files. Pursuit continues.

Got Knoppix.... (surprisingly little robust OS considering how compact it is)..... can 'poke around' and do things, and FOUND the raw samsung drive plugged into the USB port. I can not however find the network (and the borrowed 1tb drive I have plugged INTO the network to which I wish to MOVE all this data before I attempt to FIX this iomega). My plan is to copy all data for a bit, and then later move it back once I reformat or repair or replace the iomega (warranty), whichever happens. Why cant I find the network? why cant I then see this new drive plugged into the netgear router? BTW, while looking around in knoppix I see nothing odd or disfunctional about the old iomega that is problematic. It just has some glitch that is causing it to be non-accessable under normal conditions as a network appliance (?) I wish it were as easy as running an app once in Knoppix and 'in' that drive. Too simple I know....

Why cant I find the network? Don't know. How is your network organized? Does Knoppix recognize your networkcard? Open a terminal (console) and type
Code:

sudo ifconfig -a

Does it list any NIC, besides lo? Does it have an IP address which matches you network range? Do you have internet access from knoppix?
Quote:

why cant I then see this new drive plugged into the netgear router? I don't know if Knoppix will autorecognize a 'Windows-share'. Have a look in the menu if you can find anything about 'Samba browsing'. (Samba is the open-source implementation of the proprietary Windows smb protocol, which bears the 'Windows networking'). Why don't you just plug the disk in your PC? That will be *much* faster.

Well, maybe it is. I think that repairing the problem will be easier than determining what the problem actually is. (If *you* tell me what the actual cause is, *I*'ll write a script which repairs it ). Unless, of course, it's a hardware problem.

I found my work around for the first portion of the repair. I bought an external drive that uses a USB connection INSTEAD of cat5 network (to router) connection. The iomega is only seen and usable on the network as a NAS media drive and so now I have a place to park the data while having the seagate outside of the NAS (hotwired and accessable). So, using KNOPPIX (which I have grown to appreciate) I have moved the data onto the new USB drive. Tomorrow I wish to reformat or fix the original iomega (so I can move my data back to the NAS and return this bloated USB drive to Office Max and no I am not kidding). I will get screen shots etc. of the original problem I encountered (which according to some is a damaged or missing partition table or file). At that point I will indeed be way outside of my comfort zone and will need a walk through. Till then, much thanks thus far. Day seven of this process and this forum has proven very valuable.

After a way-too-long experience I have backed-up all the data I want to save onto a temporary external drive. NOW I want to proceed with repairing whatever ails this iomega drive. It is still hooked up to the PC by way of USB (outside its box, just an exposed seagate baracuda drive). I have my linux shell running, and can poke around (graphical interface).... Now what? (recall.... Original diagnosis was "lost or corrupted partition table" not sure if that is true or not, but the trick is to make it "readable" if anything IS missing or corrupt, once its back in its box and attached ONLY by network cable-to-router)

Original diagnosis was "lost or corrupted partition table" Seeing that screenshot there is nothing wrong with the partition table. Maybe the diagnosis was triggered by the fact that partition 3 contains no filesystem, and starts at an unusual place. Alas it's not possible to tell what made your disk fail from this screenshot. It's possibly just a corrupted config file, but there are dozens of them, and most of them are cryptical. I suggest to reinstall the firmware.

shoot. I was afraid you would say that.

I got lost in the terminal emulator type black-screen stuff.... and can do the graphical interface. I DID however... get the files, unzip them, park them within the "root"(?) directory of the iomega / seagate drive (not the big partition, but the small 5 gig one which would make sense to me. (see screen shot). the "grip -dc /full/path/to/mbr....." portion is foreign to me (but yes, I do know that the actual path would replace the words full...path...to etc.) Can i do this from the GUI or can you tell me based on screen shot what the likely path fill-in-blank path would be? Hell.... I could not even find my way back from the shell (text and blk scrn) without re-starting the frikin' computer. Similar to old DOS which I have not needed to touch since like 95 sorry to be a pest

Check out this screen shot. Could I not simply drag-and-drop these "fresh" replacement files right in on-top of the old (possibly broken" files in that root.... directory on that small partition on the drive? It would then replace (I would guess) any and all files with the new ones and thus the result would the the same as your instructions "installing firmware on a new disk" (?) Let me know.... as I dont dare do this unless someone who knows these things says so. thx. standing by.....

What is xfs repair and how do I execute it within Knoppix (GUI) and would THAT solve my problem?

I found xfs_repair but how the heck do I use this thing? (see screen shot, its located in burried sub-folder /media/sdb1/sbin (?) It cant be as easy as "double click on the .exe file and it does its thing"? I feel like I am close to having this 8 day adventure resolved and just need to repair the original iomega raw drive before I put this b!itch back together and call it done!

Can i do this from the GUI AFAIK not. Rewriting partition tables is a bit lowlevel, especially when a non-standard layout is used. However, you could try to just remove everything from /media/sdb1, and then extract sda1-2064.tgz to it. This will only overwrite the firmware rootfs, leaving the directory structure (and the bootloader+kernel) intact. Unfortunately you'll have to be root (Administrator) to do so. Maybe it's possible to use the GUI to do root-things in the filesystem, but in that case I don't know how to. (Why spoiling time in searching for options which will be different in each GUI, when you have a powerful commandline? ) First move sda1-2064.tgz to /media/sdb2. Then open a terminal, and type
Code:

cd /media/sdb1 sudo rm -rf * current directory (/media/sdb1) sudo tar -xzf /media/sdb2/sda1-2064.tgz from sda1-2064.tgz # this extracts everything # this erases all from the

Now 'safely eject' the disk, and test it in your NAS.

If Knoppix didn't complain when copying the userdata, it seems the only xfs partition (the userdata partition) is alive and kicking.
