SENASPACE
is
pleased
to
announce
Resurfaced
Realms
of
the
Unreal
the
debut
exhibition
of
Contemporary
Adult
Musics
(CAM)
newest
series,
LILY
AND
RITA.
Resurfaced
Realms
of
the
Unreal
will
be
on
display
from
June
28th
to
July
14th
at
229
Centre
St.
between
Grand
and
Broome
Streets.
A
private
opening
reception
will
take
place
on
June
27th
from
6
PM
to
9
PM.
In
Contemporary
Adult
Musics
newest
series
of
works,
the
duo
pays
homage
to
American
outsider
artist
and
author
Henry
Darger
and
his
posthumous
masterpiece:
The
Story
of
the
Vivian
Girls,
In
What
is
Known
as
the
Realms
of
the
Unreal,
of
the
Glandeco-Angelinian
War
Storm
Caused
by
the
Child
Slave
Rebellion.
In
the
Realms
of
the
Unreal
(as
it
is
commonly
referred
to)
was
discovered
by
Henry
Dargers
landlord
after
the
reclusive
artists
death
in
1973.
Written
over
6
decades,
the
15,145
page-long
manuscript
is
accompanied
by
hundreds
of
paintings
and
collage.
It
is
known
to
be
one
of
the
longest
pieces
of
writing
in
history
and
is
included
in
numerous
museum
collections
worldwide.
The
single-spaced
manuscript
is
a
detailed
fictional
narrative
of
the
Vivian
Girls
crusade
to
rescue
captured
children
who
have
been
imprisoned
by
the
adult
Glandelinians. The
protagonists
in
this
tale
are
always
the
children,
the
villains
typically
adults.
In
the
Realms
of
the
Unreal
is
an
archetypal
story
of
good
over
evil
and
is
the
inspiration
behind
CAM
s
eponymous
LILY
AND
RITA
series,
bringing
Dargers
tale
back
to
life,
yet
once
again.
Similarly,
the
works
imagery
depicts
young
girls
struggling
at
battle.
However,
the
artists
two
main
characters,
Lily
and
Rita
are
now
both
children;
the
meaning
of
good
and
evil
are
obscured
and
open
to
interpretation.
Without
delving
into
the
meanings
of
Dargers
Civil
War
allegories,
CAM
constructs
a
world
of
radically
different
metaphors
by
changing
the
content,
figures,
background
and
facilities.
By
employing
images
of
girls
from
vintage
dress
patterns
in
eye-popping
neon
hues,
outfitted
with
rainbows
to
symbolize
blood
and
weaponry,
Yearington
and
Rubios
works
retain
the
semblance
of
Dargers
historical
work,
but
are
freed
from
past
temporal
associations
to
become
utterly
contemporary.
Contemporary
Adult
Music
is
the
collaboration
of
New
York
artists
Chris
Yearington
and
James
Rubio.
Both
artists
are
members
of
New
Yorks
Antagonist
Art
Movement.
Their
work
can
be
seen
in
Berlin,
Lisbon,
Chihuahua,
Mexico
City
and
New
York.
In
addition
to
Resurfaced
Realms
of
the
Unreal,
CAM
currently
has
a
mural
on
exhibit
at
the
Ideal
Glass
Gallery,
22
E2nd
St.
between
Bowery
and
2nd
Avenue.
