INTRODUCING

TOTAL HIPPS

A Totally Integrated High Integrity Pressure Protection Solution Including, the Final Elements, Initiators, Logic Solver, Partial Stroke Mechanism, and TUV Certified Functional Safety Consulting to Provide A Seamless Total HIPPS Solution for SIL 3 Applications.
In today's Oil & Gas and Petrochemical 2oo3 manufacturing marketplace, manufacturers LOGIC SOLVER continue to seek process improvements, information management and process automation solutions to mitigate risk, improve safety, optimize manufacturing operations, and SOV SOV reduce the cost associated with design and construction of new process facilities. With PT 1 PT 2 PT 3 Safety Instrumented Systems playing an increasingly crucial role in many of these process 1oo2 improvements, Safety standards such as P1 P2 INITIATORS SDV #1 SDV # 2 IEC 61508, IEC 61511 and ISA 84.01, that have FINAL ELEMENTS worldwide recognition, are creating more stringent Safety requirements for process facilities. Therefore, users in the process industry are looking for systems suppliers understanding the safety standards and offering solutions to meet these emerging Safety requirements. To address this emerging need, Total Automation Solutions has integrated years of critical service valve manufacturing experience, certified high integrity safety systems hardware and software, and TUV certified functional safety consulting expertise to supply the TOTAL HIPPS solution. TOTAL HIPPS is a high integrity pressure protection solution designed to reduce the risk of a process piping system exceeding its design pressure to a tolerable level in accordance with performance criteria defined in existing and emerging process safety standards. The principle of operation is, a stand alone solid state electronic voting system (Logic Solver) which meets IEC 61508 system integrity level requirements for the application, monitors robust triplicated pressure transmitters utilizing a 2oo3 voting configuration, on high pressure the system trips to isolate the source. The system source pressure is isolated by closing extremely reliable tight shut-off isolation valves (final elements) very rapidly (typically within two seconds). They are so reliable that the need for other safety related devices such as Safety Relief Valves can be minimized. Additional TOTAL HIPPS advantages include:

NEGATES THE NEED OR REDUCES THE CAPACITY REQUIRED FOR FLARE SYSTEMS DOWNSTREAM PRODUCTION PIPING MAY BE DOWN RATED SOURCE ISOLATION WITHIN SECONDS SIGNIFICANT PIPING EQUIPMENT COST AND WEIGHT SAVINGS SINGLE SOURCE SOLUTION AND TOTAL ACCOUNTABILITY

The Final Element

TOTAL HIPPS incorporates BEL valves as the Final Elements in the system. BEL Valves design and manufacture a standard range of through conduit gate valves and linear actuators, and controls that are specifically designed for HIPPS process applications, permitting optimization of both valve and actuator performance. Complete integration between the valve and actuator eliminates all issues regarding interfacing, and reduces build-up of any unnecessary sizing factors. In addition, this not only allows full flexibility in the tailoring of standard valve solutions, but also gives BEL full control over the manufacturing and assembly processes. The valve gates, seats, stem and piston rod are Tungsten Carbide coated to reduce friction, the potential for galling, improve the sealing characteristics, and minimize wear. The BEL Through Conduit Gate Valve when combined with the BEL Hydraulic / Pneumatic Spring Return Actuator utilizes internal body cavity pressure to create an injection force via the valve stem which will automatically close the valve, provide the required closure speeds, and therefore results in an intrinsic fail safe design. Upon failure, BEL actuators are designed such that at the instant of closing the force provided to close the valve is five times greater than the force required to overcome the valve breakaway forces.

The Partial Stroke Device

TOTAL HIPPS incorporates Drallim Controls as the Partial Stroke Mechanism in the system. The Drallim Smart Valve Monitoring (SVM) system is designed to be used in applications where periodic testing of Emergency Shut Down Valves (ESDVs) are required to comply with ISA S84.01 & IEC 61508 directives. SY740 will monitor the TOTAL HIPPS final elements for faults based on comparing an original full closure fingerprint of the final element assembly and components such as Solenoid Valves, against a partial stroke test. The SVM system performs all tests at the final elements designed closure speed, without affecting the process operation or production. Final element partial stroke tests may be initiated & monitored by remote signals from the likes of a DCS or SCADA system.

The Initiators
Total HIPPS incorporates Rosemont Pressure Transmitters for the HIPPS initiators. The 3051S transmitter is an isolated two-wire 4 20 mA smart device classified as Type B according to IEC61508. It contains self-diagnostics and is programmed to send its output to a specified failure state, either high or low upon internal detection of a failure.
