Internet addiction

IBRILEANU IAI TEACHER: JITRAU ROXANA- PETRONELA CLASS: 10 D LEVEL: Intermediate NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 17 pupils DATE: the 21 of May 2013 TIME OF LESSON: 10.00- 10.50 LESSON TOPIC: Internet addiction APPROACH: Communicative LESSON AIMS: To create a pleasant atmosphere; To create interest in the topic; To revise/ introduce vocabulary related to the topic; To raise expectations and create involvement in the reading task; To practise extensive and intensive reading ( skimming and scanning); To motivate students to use the new vocabulary/ to encourage Ss to give a personal response to the text.

SKILLS: Integrated, mainly reading and speaking

DIDACTIC STRATEGIES: a) Procedural resources: Conversation; Explanation; Listening and reading comprehension. b) Material resources: The blackboard; Students notebooks; Handouts. TEACHERS ROLE: Organizer, Coordinator, Advisor, Resource, Help.

PROCEDURE: Lesson stage 1.Warm up Aim -to create a pleasant atmosphere;

Procedure
T marks the absent Ss (if any), checks the materials which are necessary for the lesson and if Ss are prepared for the lesson. T checks homework: Ss were asked to write about three of their favourite jobs ( main advantages of having these jobs). T asks a few Ss to come to the front of the class and read what they wrote. T corrects the mistakes ( if necessary).

2. Pre- reading

-to revise/ introduce vocabulary related to the topic; -to motivate students to talk about the topic; -to raise expectations and create involvement in the reading task;

T writes the word internet on the blackboard. They are asked to say 8 words connected with internet. ( individual work).

T asks Ss to say 5 types of addiction which they know. T writes at the blackboard the types of addiction. Addictions: Then teacher leads the feedback session, writing on the blackboard the types of addiction the Ss know. T tells Ss they are going to read a sketch whose title is Internet addiction.

3.While- reading

-to listen and read to T sets a task to assist overall understanding: T writes 2 confirm expectations; general questions about the text on the blackboard: -Which are the causes that people get addicted to -to read for general the internet? understanting -How many examples of social networks online are (skimming)
mentioned in the text? T asks Ss to read the questions before they are giving the handouts with the sketch. Ss are asked to work individually and then check their answers with their deskmates (individual and pair work). T gives Ss handouts with the sketch . Ss are asked to read the text silently and underline the unknown words. If necessary, T explains new vocabulary: to surf the web,family bonding, versatile, astounding, survey, disorder. T checks understanding and leads the feedback session.

Next T sets a task so that Ss can focus on more detailed understanding: Ss are going to fill in a table with 4 negative and 4 positive aspects of using the internet given in the text. Ss are asked to give an argument for their selection. Ss are asked to work in pairs ( pair work). T checks understanding and leads the feedback session.

4.Post- reading

-to motivate Ss to use the new vocabulary; -to encourage Ss to give a personal response to the text;

T asks Ss to say if the internet is a real or unreal problem in their opinion, and they must argument their choice. T asks Ss to write some of the opinions at the blackboard.( pair work). Ss must write a paragraph in which they present the reasons of why is the internet important for them, they must give examples. T asks a few Ss to come to the front of the class and speak/ read what they wrote in their notebooks. ( group work).

5.Evaluation and homework

-to practise the new vocabulary

T gives Ss feedback as to their performance during the class and gives homework. Ss must prepare a 3 minutes speech in which they give advice to an internet addict.
