BACK TO WORK
We enjoyed a busy Christmas vacation in Boise, Idaho, and Lebanon, Oregon, from December 19 to January 6. The vacation included about sixty hours of travel, lots of Christmas goodies and celebrations (including my brother-in-law's ordination, Mark Peterson), and time with the WHOLE family (including my sister and her husband, Rod and Linda Peterson, who are missionaries in Mexico City). We also had many hours of conversation with friends, plenty of shopping for things hard to get in Hong Kong, a day or two down with colds and flu, some time for work, some time for planning ahead, beautiful country, and much more snow, ice cold and fog than anyone expected, which should satisfy that desire for several years
to come.

TUEN MUN CHRISTIAN CHURCH

January 8 was Dwain's first Sunday back in worship after back surgery. He's doing better each week, but there's still enough pain to inhibit him from the full
swing of things.

January 11, the first bi-weekly, English-speaking women's meeting was held. Helen Jew will be leading them in a study through The Measure of a Woman by Gene
A. Getz.

During January, the church will hold its first annual congregational meeting, nominate and elect its first board, have its financial books formally audited for the

first time, and do its first yearly planning, including faith promise.
Ministering to the church is now somewhat like ministering to two separate congregations in two different languages meeting under one roof. As we look at the year to come, I hope to see the various ministries of the church expand to reach more different kinds of people, necessitating some expansion in the size of the
church's facilities.

LILY
On January 9, two-month-old Jiu Ling Fung checked into our home for more-or-

less permanent residence. We call her Lily. Her mother and father operate a couple of beauty salons that often require them to work over twelve hours a day, seven
days a week. We have known the mother for nearly six years, so Joyce was hired to take care of Lily until her real parents can provide her the attention she needs.

I'm finding it hard, though, to know whether we have got everybody when we

UNREST
From what I read and hear in the media, on Friday, January 13, Hong Kong taxi drivers used their taxis enmasse to block major roads throughout the Colony in protest against excessive taxation proposals, bringing much evening traffic to a
standstill.

In the busiest part of the city, Mong Kok - Yaumatei, after 6:00 p.m., unhappy
crowds of others soon swelled to around 10,000. Diesel fuel was lit. Double-deck

buses were commandeered, even used as battering rams, and plush jewelry stores were looted, before arrests and tear gas and baton charges by police dispelled the
crowds.

This is the hottest incident since 1967, seventeen years earlier, when leftists
inspired by the Cultural Revolution created unrest. Communists do not seem to have inspired what happened this Friday the thirteenth. However, one leftist drivers'

union seemed to try to jump into the mainstream once they knew which way the
current was flowing.

What does this unrest mean? I would like to venture a guess. It seems^ that a growing number of people find it more and more frustrating to make ends meet! This
seems partly due to tighter wages and partly because they are spending much on forms of escape like gambling, drunkenness, video and sexual excitement. Moreover, many may feel trapped here, no matter what happens to Hong Kong. These frustrations seem to spill out toward the wealthy, symbolized by the government and jewelry stores, who seem to continue to profit, and who are wealthy
of wealth and power are perceived as unresponsive to people's felt needs. Then, clever incitors can jump in and seize the lead when the time is ripe for victory, making the state of the people
worse than before.

David got the chickcii pox, January 27th. February 2nd through 4th were the main days of Chinese New Year, when folks make a real effort to visit one another, but having chicken pox in the house really cut down on that. Then, Stevie got them

TUEN MUN CHRISTIAN CHURCH

The English womer's Bible siudy has initiated a prayer chain, and the new con gregational chairman Steven Woolley leads the congregation in prayer each Sunday,
which blesses us all.

TMCC's new managing board of 6 is divided into an English and a Cantonese committee to ensure that no one is neglected. In February, TMCC averaged 41 differ
ent people in services each weekend.

Annual audit and faith promise haven't taken place yet, nor is yearly planning completed, but we're trying to expand the 420 sq. ft. of the chapel. English Sunday
School could then be moved from our home to the chapel and expanded to include

early teen and adult classes.

The Chinese kid's club could be divided into graded

classes, and mavbe the church office could be moved from the chapel, allowing more convenient worship.

One possibility is to purchase about 230 sq. ft. of shop space nearby at about $22,400. $5,000 is now in hand, leaving a gap of about $17,400.

While I was setting up for the meeting, I prayed that God would somehow use these circumstances to glorify His name. While I was thus praying, a thought came to me: Suppose I was asked to be on the committee, to even be chairman, to even let the chapel be the association's address, was I prepared to glorify God
in those capacities?

Frankly, I had to sit down and really think about it. First, not being a resi dent, I really wasn't qualified to do anything but just observe, and I should not as sume more. But yes, if God wanted more, I would be willing, trusting Him.
About 70 residents attended the meeting. I only sat at the very back quietly

observing. They decided to elect a nine-member board. Seven were elected and two were still needed. The moderating government officer called to the back and asked, "Pastor, do you care what happens to this building?" "Yes," I said, "I care." "Then, would you be willing to be on the board?" "How can I be on the board? I don't live here, I'm . a foreigner and as you can hear my Chinese is poor?" "You are not the first," he said. "It has been done before. Are you willing?"

"So to speak, I'm willing." And that's how I got elected. After the meeting, the board stayed behind to elect its officers.

BUILDING CHURCH
On March 10, the shop across the hall from the chapel was rented for $87 per
month to serve as an office and classroom.

The shop adjoining the chapel, fully furnished, was purchased March 30 for about $11,6000, including closing costs.
The Lord willing, and thanks to your generous support, it should be fully paid off by May 29, It provides two small classrooms each able to accommodate five children and
a teacher.

These two new shops make it possible to hold meetings with over fifty people in the chapel while at the same time running as many as five classes with maybe five or six people in each, making a total maximum capacity of about 80, My office was in the chapel before, so the chapel could only seat about forty and nothing else could be happening at the same time, not even babysitting. So, although the facility of the church has only grown by 48 percent, the capacity has increased by 100 percent.
...And just in time, too. Resurrection weekend, the
church showed the two-hour movie JESUS three

times.

This movie was jointly produced by Warner Brothers, The Genesis Project and

Campus Crusade according to the Gospel of Luke. 72 people attended Tuen Mun Christian Churches showings of it.

FAITH BY MAIL
When the Compass of Truth radio broadcast ceased and the organization was disbanded in June of last year, I agreed to carry through with the fifty or so students who were taking the correspondence course at that time. I intended to close the course when those students finished because I didn't have the time to keep recruiting new students. Incredibly, despite my passivity, over 120 new students have joined it since then, introduced by word of mouth from others. So I am still grading some twenty lessons a week and enjoying all the more the opportunity of seeing these people grow in their comprehension of spiritual truths.

ON THE MEND
Although Joyce's ankle is still somewhat stiff, the cast is gone, and she was able to give up crutches on the first of May. We will both be glad when she can pick up our boys from school every day and do most of the shopping herself.

UNPOPULARITY
Believers of all Christian groups combined comprise less than 8 percent of the population. In fact, there are more worshippers here of Tin Hau, a pagan deity worshipped by only fisherman and some farmers, than there are Christians,

RESURRECTION SUNDAY
Tuen Mun Christian Church met for the first time in its present chapel on Resurrection Sunday one year ago. I believe there were 15 of us. This year, besides those who attended the movie, 32 folks attended worship on Resurrection Sunday, and 38 for the week after.

MOVING MISSIONARIES
Joyce helped DARRYL, SHERRYL and WAY ANN JEW and Mei Foo Christian Church throw a surprise 25th Wedding Anniversary reception for WAYFULL and HELEN JEW. It was great fun.
DWAIN and BECKY ANDERSON with their two children SARA and MARK left for

the U.S. on May 4.

They had been here since October of 1981.

Two Chinese comedians both amused the audience with their dialogue and declared that true confidence in the future could only be found in Christ.

A well-known recording artist both thrilled the audience with her songs and also declared that healthy music leads to healthy thoughts and actions, so buy the kind of music

Finally, as the police director of crime prevention for the whole region was being
interviewed, she testified that "as a Christian, she would have to say that where people
turned to Christ, crime decreased"!

GUESS WHO?

MIKE SAMPSON, ministering at KLAMATH FALLS, who's great on the guitar, stayed
overnight and preached and sang at TMCC.

ROY LAWSON, ministering in MESA, ARIZONA, and author of eleven Christian books

with three more coming out this coming year, and JIM SMITH, Executive Director of
CHRISTIAN MISSIONARY FELLOWSHIP stayed a couple of days and shared with several in
informal fellowship.

The weekend of June 17. TMCC set a record attendance of 58 total different people at

regular services, and broke that record the next weekend with at least 60, only to break it again July 22 with attendance in the low 60's and again on July 29 with attendance in the
upper 60's.

I know that 60 some people doesn't seem like much to Americans, but it has taken a

long time coming here. Please pray for the congregation as they make adjustments for new people and try to expand services to meet needs which could not have been met before.
Finally, CHAN CHI WAI, SEUN HOK YAN, MARIA MUSSO and BOB CASWELL are to be
immersed in Christ's name tomorrow, August 12, at the TMCC chapel.

On July 20 three officials from the Social Welfare Department asked to meet with me immediately about a problem they couldn't seem to solve. In a town about six miles from us,
speaking Cantonese and knowing rural Chinese life. For various reasons, the Social Welfare Department determined that every effort should
be made to move them to a foster home for a year or so until legalities could be worked out

for them to emigrate to a place where they as Caucasians would fit in. The Social Welfare Department apparently looked everywhere for a foster home that was Caucasian but fluent in Cantonese with high moral standards before coming to us. We tried to investigate every
other possibility, too.

Finally, after prayerful consideration, we decided that because Joyce and I have both been brought up in homes where loving those who needed loved was always the policy, and
because God has put us in unique positions here, we volunteered. The Save the Children Fund will provide for their upkeep. We meet TINA and AMANDA

two days from this writing. The final processing should be done by August 17. In all of the things in this letter, we sincerely desire your prayers and the blessing of
the Lord.

CHRISTMAS: A MOTHER'S DAY

A favorite

Christmas carol

among Chinese children

is "Silent Night".

Only, in Chinese, the meaning isn^t actually "silent night", but "night of
peace". You may know that Chinese words or characters are actually pictographs. In fact, the two characters that make up the term "peace" give us a very vivid
image of the Christmas story.

Imagine a silhouette of the cross of Christ with the placard across the

Christ stretched away from the crossbar toward heaven, This is "ping" the first character in the word "peace". It means "justice" and "tranquility", and not only reminds us that our Lord is *our shield and the horn of our
salvation' (II Sam. 22:3), but also that "you who formerly were far off have been brought near [justified] by the blood of Christ, For He Himself is our

JX. This shape in Chinese means "shield". Now,

imagine the arms of

peace," (Eph, 2:13-14). So in "ping" we can visualize the divine plan for "peace among men with whom He is pleased" (Lk. 2:14).
But in the second Chinese character "On" we sense the very real human

factor. Imagine a flat roof with eaves and a chimney at the center, and under the roof a woman. This is "on" the Chinese character meaning "comfortable,

calm, content and ^

without thinking of

secure". In the Chinese mind, it's the image of a mother

Mary, the mother of Jesus, Images flash to mind of

at her place in the home. One can hardly look at it in the song "Silent Night"
Mary . . . . , . Mary giving birth in a stable . . .

. . , Mary hearing the shepherds' testimony and pondering all those things
in her heart . . .

. . . Mary listening to Simeon prophecy to her that "a sword will pierce

even your own soulto the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed"
(Lk. 2:35) . . .

. . . and finally, Mary at the cross 'from which hour the disciple took
her into his own home' (Jn. 19:27).

Though basically passive, Mary was caught up in the plan of God, causing her both great joy and great sorrow. So the "Ping-On" of God was born at
Christmas and consumated at Calvary with a motherjust keeping her place in her
home.

TMCC BREAKS RECORD AGAIN

Tuen Mun Christian Church attendance has been a

little lower lately,

but

during the September 30th weekend a new record attendance was set of 72 differ
ent people in regular services. Also that weekend, TMCC borrowed a large church building in Kowloon, twenty

miles away and under JEAN MONTGOMERY'S guidance hosted an interchurch drama
competition and fellowship. About 120 people from five churches attended.

My two biggest concerns for TMCC are that it doesn't have enough trained and available workers to adequately look after everyone and with only 660 sq.
ft. of floor space logistics are tricky.

You may remember that the building TMCC's chapel is in also has 224 homes and over 150 shop spaces and that I am presently chairman of the building's
residents* and shopkeepers' association. Since there have been serious break-ins

recently, a drive is now on to install a simple electronic alarm system through out. Also, application has been made to open a new passageway in the shopping
center which should dramatically change the flow of people walking by the church doors and other shops from perhaps less than 20 a day to several hundred a day.

You might pray about how these things will affect TMCC's ministry in that place.
THE GIRLS

You may remember Tina and Mandy, the two Caucasian girls raised as Chinese
who moved in with us three months ago. We have been surprised at the number of

people concerned for and involved in their development. From supreme court judge

to lawyers to social workers to psychiatrist, all confess that the girls' situa
tion is both unusual and complicated. But, praise the Lord, as it looks now, the

girls should be reunited with their real father and all of their relatives in England by Christmas. Initially, the vast cultural difference between England and the way they've been raised could be traumatic for them. Please pray that firm loving guidance will prevail.
HELLO!

Jean's mother PAT HITCHCOCK visited Hong Kong in October. Then, Jean went to MEXICO, her former mission field, for a few weeks. Also, JOAN GETTER, wife of BERNEL GETTER, missionaries in India for 37 years so far, spent a couple of days with us. And, CRAIG BALLENGER and three trekkies spent a couple of days with us on

their way to Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal.

TWELVE YEARS AND SEVEN MONTHS

As you know, China's resumption of Hong Kong, July 1, 1997 is final. China,
on one hand, continually reiterates that Hong Kong will be allowed to carry on business as usual. On the other, it not only regularly and officially reiterates its opposition to the Bible but in recent months over one hundred active Chris-tiansi-none-province alone--were - separately imprisoned or persecuted simply

because the normal practice of their faith ran counter to the government's
policy of information control. Moreover, it has been well known for some time that. China is the biggest

single business investor in Hong Kong. For example, the building TMCC's chapel
is in is reported to have been built by Communist Chinese government funds and might still be the .legal owners of all unpurchased premises and all premises

mortgaged through the construction company which includes TMCC's chapel, A recently defected spy claimed that some of China's most prominent
business ventures here are actually spy-controlled fronts for the propagation of communism. So, with the opportunities to do good are some risks for which we further rely on God.
