July 2013 Pitch Market Scorecard

A couple of weeks ago in Junes Spec Market Scorecard we noted that 2013s spec sales slump through the end of June was 100% attributable to just three companies (Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. have all bought way fewer specs this year than last). It should come as no surprise that the same pattern is present in the pitch market -- the drop in pitch sales so far this year is all thanks to four companies: Disney, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. In fact, much like the spec market pattern, if those four companies had simply bought at the same pace they did last year, the 2013 pitch market would be up 52% year over year, thanks to the more aggressive Fox and Universal. As it stands, though, pitch sales are down 13% compared to this point in 2012, which in turn was down 13% from the same period in 2011. As you can see almost at a glance from the grid below, the second half of 2012 was signicantly worse than the second half of 2011 (-35%). We doubt Disney is going to match its 9 annual pitch sales this year, but hopefully Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. will step back up after the summer break and well at least split the difference.
