Introduction
The University of Nairobi has responded to national, regional and Africas high level manpower training needs by developing and evolving, diversified academic programmes and specializations in sciences, applied sciences, technology, humanities, social sciences and the arts. Through self-sponsored programmes, invaluable opportunity has been opened to thousands of Kenyans and non-Kenyans, who meet university admission requirements. The location of the University in the capital city and its environs is an advantage that has seen the university increasingly become a busy hub and citadel of academic activity at all times. In addition to the regular, evening and weekend programmes, classes are conducted at the Universitys Campuses in Mombasa and Kisumu and also in the Extra mural Centres located in the following centers; Garissa, Kakamega,Nakuru,Meru,Kapenguria,Kisii, Thika,Lokichogio,Lamu and Nyeri. This booklet contains information about the entry requirements into the various undergraduate degree programmes, diploma, certificate, bridging and foundation courses offered at the University of Nairobi,the mode of study,fees payable and various contacts for further enquiries. Module II & III, Self Sponsored Programmes and Distance Education Application Dates
University of Nairobi has three intakes in an Academic year with the main intake being in September /October for all the courses and i) December/January for Bachelor of Education(Arts), Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce,Bachelor of Hospitality Management,Bachelor of Travel and Tourism ii)April/May for Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education(Arts),Bachelor of Education Early Childhood, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Economics ,Bachelor of Economics and Statistics ,Bachelor of Journalism and media Studies,Bachelor of Art Broadcast Production, Bachelor of Hospitality Management,Bachelor of Travel and Tourism,Bachelor of Arts Broadcast Production and all Diploma and Certificate courses The advertisements for the intakes are usually carried in the local press two months before the intake and March/April for the September/October main intake.

Application Procedure

Application forms may be obtained from the University Main Campus Ghandi Wing , Room G3 and from any of the UoN Extra Mural Centers in Garissa, Kakamega, Kisumu, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nyeri and other centres , upon payment of a non-refundable application fee of Kshs 3,000. The application fee may be paid by Direct Deposit at any Barclays Bank Branch into the UNES/UON Account, Westlands Branch, A/C No. 03-073-1023948. Bankers cheques will also be accepted. CASH and postal orders WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Application forms may also be downloaded from the University of Nairobi website: www.uonbi. ac.ke (Admissions), with evidence of payment of the application fee furnished at the time of application submission. Proficiency in English

Applicants from non-English speaking countries will be required to produce a certificate of proficiency in English such as Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Distance Education

The University of Nairobi has embarked on Distance Learning mode of delivery intended to favour those students who may not be available to take courses either on full time or part time (evenings and weekends) basis. Currently, the following courses are being offered by distance learning mode:-Bachelor of Education (Arts), Bachelor of Education (Science), Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science. Other programmes are due to follow soon.

General Admissions Criteria


1. Bridging Courses
The minimum admission criteria to Bridging Courses shall be: i. KCSE mean grade of C+ or equivalent and at least a C- in the subject to be bridged or equivalent .

2. Certificate Courses
Admission to Certificate Courses will be based on any of the following minimum qualifications: i. KCSE mean grade of C- or equivalent. ii. An O level mean grade of Division III or equivalent. iii. An A Level qualification with a minimum of two subsidiary passes or equivalent.
3. Diploma Courses Admission to Diploma Courses will be based on any of the following minimum qualifications: i. KCSE mean grade C. ii. KCSE mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate. iii. An O level qualification with a minimum division III or equivalent.

iv. An A level qualification with a minimum of two subsidiary passes or equivalent.

NB. i) Certificates must be from an Institution recognised by the University of Nairobi Senate ii) The certificates should have been undertaken for a period of at least one Semester. 4. Degree Programmes Admission to Bachelors Degree Programmes will be based on any one of the following minimum qualifications: i. KCSE mean grade C+ or equivalent ii. KCSE mean grade C- or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma iii. O Level Division II or equivalent plus a Diploma. iv. O Level Division III or equivalent plus a Certificate and Diploma. v. O Level Division III or equivalent plus a three-year Diploma from a recognized post secondary Institution for admissions to Bachelor of Education. vi. Diploma from University of Nairobi or other recognized institutions and an aggregate of C in KCSE or equivalent. vii.A Level with two principal passes or equivalent in relevant subjects Only Applicants whose results are available at the time of application will be considered. viii.CPAII/CPSII/CIPS or equivalent for Commerce and Arts and should have attained an aggregate of C in KCSE or O level Division III. ix. P1 from a two-year post secondary training institution for entry into Bachelor of Education with Minimum KCSE Mean Grade C or O Level Division III . x. Higher National Diploma in relevant fields and should have attained an aggregate of C in KCSE. xi. Degree from a recognized University. xii.Equivalent qualifications to the above from institutions recognised by Senate. 5. Foundation Courses i. The university offers foundation courses in Sciences and Arts. ii. Applicants who have C- would be admitted to the Foundation Course as a prerequisite for university admission. The various courses are listed under Schools/Institutes/Faculties outlined in the colleges below. Please note that in the tables, abbreviations used are B.A.
