PLANNING FOR TEACHING PRIMARY SCIENCE 14 AUGUST 2009

Teachers have the responsibility to ensure that the learning experiences of their pupils are enhanced through effective teaching. This can be achieved through quality planning and adequate preparation of activities, resources and assessment tools to achieve the specified learning objectives and learning outcomes. In addition, teachers should have a repertoire of teaching skills to ensure that the lesson will be conducted smoothly and effectively.
Instruction: Task A and C must be done in pair, while Task B and D individually. Task A: Acquisition of Knowledge (25%) 1 (a) Access the Internet to gather information on the following Instructional Models: (a) General format (b) Needhams 5-phase Constructivism; (c) Learning cycle 5E (Engagement Exploration Explanation Elaboration Evaluation) (d) Inductive and deductive inquiry based lesson; (e) Problem based learning (PBL) lesson. (b) Compare and contrast the characteristics of the above instructional models using a graphic organiser. Task B: Mastery of Knowledge and Skills (30%) 1. Prepare two daily lesson plans using different instructional models for a one-hour lesson on a selected science topic from the Primary School Science Curriculum Specification. Task C: Transfer of Learning (30%) 1. Based on your daily lesson plan, choose a section about 5-10 minutes lesson to practise a specific micro teaching skill. 2. Teach the selected section of the lesson to a group of 10 peers. 3. Prepare a feedback tool for the rest of the peers and lecturer to observe the teaching and give feedback. 4. Based on the feedback and self reflection, write a summary on how to improve your teaching skill. 5. Re-plan the section of the lesson based on the received feedback from lecturer, peers and self. 6. Re-teach the section of the lesson. 1

Write a reflection on the process of preparing this coursework. 2. Organise all the materials according to the table of content. 3. Record all your collaboration with peers and lecturers using the collaboration form. GENERAL INSTRUCTION 1. This assignment should be typed on A4 size white papers, Arial 12, 1 margin and 1 spacing. 2. Sources of materials, references and URL1 should be stated according to APA format. 3. Diagrams, pictures and tables should be numbered, labelled and listed in the table of content. 4. Sources of information in the writing should be stated accordingly. The use of footnotes and/or endnotes is highly recommended. 5. The title page should contain the following information: a. Name of student b. Index Number c. Identity Card Number d. Group/Unit e. Code and Subject f. Name of Supervisor g. Date of submission. 6. WARNING: Any form of plagiarism will not be tolerated and those who committed this shameful act will definitely fail the course. 7.
