The Art of the Medusa

STORY
STORY DEVELOPMENT STORY

This story is about the begining of the Medusa. I researched about Greek Mythology a lot, and I found that the mythology reflects the culture and commandments of the time period. For Greek people, the gods was almighty and no one can approach to them. Also, womens rights was really poor. If a women got raped by a man, the man has no guilty. However even though she is a victim, the women has to be punished and go into banishment. This story was started that point, and its kind a medusa begins.

Their was a girl. She was so pretty and so kind. She was a priestess. She worked for Athena, the powerful god of the war and wisdom. One day, she got raped by a god, his name is Poseidon. Unfortunately, Athena saw the scene. Athena got mad, because she loved Poseidon. The great goddess felt jealousy and anger to her priestess. She didnt care who is victim and assailant. Athena coursed her priestess and the priestess changed into a monster. The priestess name is Medusa.

CONCEPT DESIGN

MEDUSA CONCEPT
Medusa is most famous monster in the world. She is a powerful symbol of the evil. However, for this project, we wanted to emphasize that Medusa is a victim and she was week and innocent. So we designed her wardrobe for her character.

MEDUSA TRANSFORMING
Olive tree is one of the symbol of Athena. She can manipulate the tree and forest. When Medusa ran into her back yard forest, she captured by the trees and was injected poison by the branches.

ATHENA CONCEPT Athena is a god of war and wisdom.

ATHENA COMBAT MODE When she need to fight, we changes her costume. She can go anywhere with her cocoon, and to do that, she needs to ware a black cape.

POSEIDON Poseidon is god of the ocean. He can control the water. Also he can change into water.

ATHENAS TREE SOLDIER Athena can control olive trees. So she can make her anytime with olive tree. This soldiers can move into the ground and they use branches as a weapon.

ATHENA TEMPLE Athenas temple is the main location of the story. The temple is places against the big ocean, which represents Poseidon, the god of ocean.

Athena Temple initial concept

Its a process of the design of the temple. The temple is against the ocean and we liked that concept, but it looks so fragile and week. So I thought it needs something more. More powerful element to against the god of ocean.

Temple is pretty week compare with ocean. However, gigantic Athena statue can project her temple. The giant statue cover the temple with her cloth. Now the temple looks so strong and safe.

ATHENA TEMPLE INTERIOR The most important of the interior is how to make continuity with exterior of the temple. It still has to be powerful and still has to be projected the statue. Se we cover the pillar with her statues cloth.

ATOMIC STUDIO Atomic studio is located in near downtown Los Angeles. This studio has great, huge green screen stage and lots of lighting equipments. It allows us can take more dramatic shoot.

Green treadmill allows us to create running Medusa and infinete field.

Green Strings

We used lots of things to help acting. Green string is one of the items. It helped her acting she is captured by branches.

MATTE PAINTING

FOREST Most important thing for matte painting for motion graphic is layer and footage management. To do that, we needed to keep every single elements(tree, branch, grasses, etc) with separate layers.

Entrance of the Forest

This is the entrance of the Athenas back yard forest. It is also the begining of the darkness.

The middle ground of the Forest

Medusa encounts Athena this location. it is already deeply dark and cold. all the life is gone and nobody can help Medusa

Poseidons Wave

This scene is the finale of the Medusa. Giant wave is going to hit the Athena statue and the Athena statue is against the wave, protecting her temple and the forest.

MEDELING

ATHENA TEMPLE AND STATUE This is the biggest object in this project. It has to be super detail, and needs some elements to show its scale.

ATHENA SOLDIER This soldier needed to be animated in Cinema 4D. So we made a base model and then animated it. After animationg, we add displacement map and normal map for detail.

ATHENAS COCOON The cocoon has three pieces. Top cocoon part, leaves, and roots. These three objects have totally different level of details and textures.

The base mash of the cocoon is pretty simple.

It has super detail vine and tendon. These details allows us to make it more grotesque.
