John Chapter 17

Joh 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: Joh 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. Joh 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. Joh 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Many a solemn prayer Christ made in the days of his flesh (sometimes he continued all night in prayer), but none of his prayers are recorded so fully as this one. He had given the foregoing farewell to his disciples, he prayed this prayer in their hearing; so that, It was a prayer after a sermon; when he had spoken from God to them, he turned to speak to God for them. Note, Those we preach to, we must pray for. This was a prayer after sacrament; after Christ and his disciples had eaten the passover and the Lord's supper together. It was a family-prayer. Christ's disciples were his family. As a son of David, He blessed his household (2Sa_6:20), and prayed for them and with them. Jacob as he was dying blessed the twelve patriarchs, Moses, the twelve tribes, and so, here, Jesus when He was going to die blesses the twelve apostles. This prayer for-told of salvation's plan. Christ prayed then as a priest now offering sacrifice. This was a prayer that was a specimen of his intercession, which he ever lives to make for us. Christ began with prayer for himself, and afterwards prayed for his disciples. We must love and pray for our neighbor as ourselves, and therefore must in a right manner love and pray for ourselves first. Although Christ was much shorter in his prayer for himself than in his prayer for his disciples. Now glorify thy Son, now give him victory over principalities and powers, now let the bruising of his heel be the breaking of the serpent's head. Glorify me, that I may glorify thee. Our Lord Jesus had work given him to do by him that sent him; he came not into the world to live at ease, but to go about doing good, and to fulfill all righteousness. His Father gave him his work. Jesus says now, I have finished my work.

Having performed and finished the work of His Father, Christ now seeks to resume His glory, and clad himself again with his former robes of light.

Joh 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Joh 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. Joh 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me. Joh 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. Joh 17:10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
Jesus now prays for those God had intrusted Him with. This is not a prayer for the world, but for these, His followers. They had left all to follow Him. Christ prays for those that are his. Thou gavest them me, as sheep to the shepherd, to be kept; as a patient to the physician, to be cured; as children to a tutor, to be taught: thus he will deliver up his charge. Christ offered this prayer for his people alone as believers; not for the world at large. All mine are thine, and thine are mine. This speaks the Father and Son to be one. All mine are thine. The Son owns none for his, that are not devoted to the service of the Father.

a. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me. b. They have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me. are of thee. c. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; d. They have received them. e. They .. have known surely that I came out from thee, f. They have believed that thou didst send me.

Joh 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. Joh 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Joh 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. Joh 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Joh 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. Joh 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
He did not pray that his disciples should be removed out of the world, that they might escape the rage of men, for they had a great work to do for the glory of God, and the benefit of mankind. But he prayed that the Father would keep them from the evil, from being corrupted by the world, the remains of sin in their hearts, and from the power and craft of Satan. So that they might pass through the world as through an enemy's country, as he had done. The world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even

as I am not of the world. Even so we find it today. The rights of every false religion is presented and upheld in our schools. Yet the Word of God might offend someone. Therefore, it is the Word of God our government chooses to remove. In World History children are taught and tested on many false religions. There is one brief paragraph out of the large book about Jesus, and it is passed over, and hardly ever read. NEVER discussed. The child will find no questions over this passage on their test. The world hates us. It hated Him! We are not of this world. Praise God! We are not of this world.

Joh 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Joh 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. Joh 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Joh 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. Joh 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that

they may be one, even as we are one: Joh 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Joh 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. Joh 17:25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. Joh 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

The Lord prayed for us.

Joh 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:
May they be all one in their desires and prayers; though they differ in words and the manner of expressions, yet, having received the same spirit of adoption, and observing the same rule. The privilege of believers: the Father himself loveth them with a love resembling his love to his Son, for they are loved in him with an everlasting love The Jews had a saying, If the world did but know the worth of good men, they would hedge them about with pearls.
