Rummage sale, brat fry for Jackson toddler set for Aug. 3
A rummage sale and brat fry in honor of Jackson 3year-old Kennedy Kieferwho is recovering from a kidney transplant and faces a lifetime of medical billswill be held Saturday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Pauls Automotive, 9130 W. Center St., in Milwaukee. The event is being held for the Childrens Organ Transplant Organization (COTA), a national non-profit that helps families navigate the challenges associated with an organ transplant, in Kennedys name. Having recently received a kidney from her mother, Kennedy and her family must now prepare for the expense of anti-rejection medications and future transplants. The daughter of Eric and Jennifer Kiefer and sister to older brother Lukas, Kennedy was eight months old when she was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor on her right kidney. Following the removal of the kidney, she received 19 weeks of chemotherapy, and also underwent a second surgery for a bowel obstruction. In January, the toddlers blood work showed complications with her remaining kidney and a biopsy revealed that Kennedys WT1 gene (which prevents tumors) had mutated during development in the womb, causing an extremely rare medical conditionDenys-Drash Syndromeof which there are just 200 diagnosed cases in the world. Kids with this syndrome suffer complete kidney failure by age 3, develop Wilms tumors and face many related complications. We will never forget the day we were informed of Kennedys diagnosis, and how our little girls life changed forever, Kennedys parents stated in a press release. We remain hopeful and thank God for every day we have with Kennedy, and we pray for a lifetime of happy moments to share with her. Although Kennedy underwent a successful transplant July 8, thousands of dollars in medical costs remain. Kennedys team has set a goal of $75,000, and 100 percent of proceeds from the rummage sale and brat fry will go toward COTA in honor of Kennedy, to assist with transplant-related expenses. Those who wish to donate items for the rummage can drop them off at Pauls Automotive (414-476-7285), or call Jessica Coleman at (414) 303-0928 for a Brookfield drop-off point or Andrea Herkowski at (414) 405-1402 for a location in Cedarburg. For more information or to donate to COTA in honor of Kennedy, visit www.cotaforKennedyK.com, and follow the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CaringForKennedy.

Medicare for workers over age 65

(NAPS)Turning 65 has traditionally been associated with the start of a persons retirement and, accordingly, his or her Medicare coverage. But if you are one of the 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day and you choose to work past the traditional retirement age, its important that you understand how this choice impacts your Medicare coverage. "Medicare enrollment can be confusing, especially if you work past age 65 and have employer-sponsored health coverage," says Tom Paul, chief consumer officer, UnitedHealthcare. "Regardless of when you plan to retire, its important to learn about Medicare as you approach your 65th birthday so you have time to consider your options and can feel confident about the choices you make." Keep these things in mind: Timing Matters: Pay attention to your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP). The IEP is a seven-month period that includes the three months before your 65th birthday, the month of your birthday, and the three months after your birthday. You should understand how your enrollment choices during the IEP could impact your health care coverage both now and in the future. Keep in mind that many people choose to enroll in Medicare Part A (for hospital care) when they turn 65 even if they have employer coverage. For most people, Part A is available for no monthly premium and can be combined with some employer-sponsored health plans. Penalties and Gaps Are Possible: If you dont sign up for Medicare coverage during your IEP, you could experience a gap in coverage later and could also incur penalties on your premiums for Medicare Part B (doctors visits) and Part D (prescription medications). To avoid these scenarios, be proactive in contacting Medicare to notify them of your delayed enrollment and make sure you understand the rules and requirements for future enrollment. HR Can Help: Your employers HR or benefits coordinator can help you understand your current health coverage and when you should enroll in Medicare. Some key questions to ask: Should I enroll in Original Medicare while I continue to receive employer-sponsored benefits? Its not always an either-or situation. Sometimes people can combine their employer-sponsored coverage with Medicare benefits. Does my employer-sponsored plan offer prescription drug benefits that qualify as "creditable coverage"? If the answer is yes, then you wont need to enroll in Medicare Part D as long as you have your employer-sponsored coverage. When I am ready to retire, what steps will I need to take to fully transition to Medicare coverage or retiree benefits through my employer? Be sure to plan well in advance as it can take several months for your Medicare enrollment to be processed, meaning you could face a lapse in coverage if you wait until the last minute. If you would like further information on Medicare, the IEP and how Medicare differs from employer-sponsored health coverage, you can call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY: 1-877-486-2048), 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit www.Medicare.gov.

Warhawk Band Boosters Golf Outing set for Aug. 26

The Germantown High School Warhawk Band Boosters will host its 11th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 26, at Scenic View Country Club, 4415 Club Drive, Slinger. Sign-in for the popular community event begins at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start following at 11 a.m. Golfers of all ability levels will play 18 holes in a scramble format and enjoy lunch during their round. At 4:30 p.m., participants will gather at the clubhouse for dinner, an awards presentation, raffles, and a performance by the Germantown High School Wall of Sound marching band. Communities come together for summer crime prevention events

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
As summer gets underway, area communities are preparing to take their annual stand against crime while coming together as neighbors with various National Night Out and related events. Held across the country the first Tuesday of August since 1984, the National Association of Town Watch (NATW)-sponsored National Night Out was created to increase awareness about police, fire and safety programs in communities. Since then, many area municipalities have carried out these efforts each summer, putting their own spin on the family-friendly event. Area events and dates include: SussexWednesday, Aug. 7, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Pauline Haass Public Library and Weyer Park (next to Village Hall): For nearly a decade, the village has offered a National Night Out/Ice Cream Social event as a way to promote safety and inform the public, said Lt. Torin Misko of the Waukesha County Sheriffs Department. Basically it is an opportunity for the police and fire departments to show the services they offer and touch base with the community and provide them with informational material, he said. Misko, who acts as director of police services for Sussex, said the villages focus of the event is on highlighting resources, such as the local SWAT team, as well as the Citizens Police Academy and Police Explorers. There are also vehicles on display, he noted. The fire department brings in their engines and ambulances, plus a crash simulator demonstrates the impact of a crash, he said. And the police department has all of its vehicles outsuch as the armored Bear Catfor the kids to crawl around in. We also have our K-9 unit there, Misko added. In conjunction with the NNO, the library always puts on an ice cream social, offering free treats to the public. Its a fun time, said Misko. We always get a big crowd, about 1,000 people or so. Menomonee FallsTuesday, Aug. 6, 5:30 to 9 p.m., throughout the village: While Menomonee Falls held the traditional National Night Out for the last couple years, the village is going back to its roots this year with the neighborhood block parties it had organized for the two decades prior to that. Described by Officer Jim Kirchberger as unique, the village-wide block party idea involves neighborhoods, streets and subdivisions in cook outs, ice cream socials, whatever they want to organize and allows community members to develop relationships with each other. Then, during the parties, police and fire officials and McGruff the Crime Dog will make their rounds and interact with residents. Its more personal this way, said Kirchberger. It gets neighbors out of their homes and allows them to meet, aside from just waving to each other as theyre cutting the grass. The officer said the popularity of this event is indicative of the villages dedication to crime prevention and sense of community as Menomonee Falls received the honor of the countrys Top Neighborhood Watch Program in 2009 and boasts more than 150 neighborhood watch groups. The whole motivation behind the event is crime prevention awareness and encouraging neighborhoods to take ownership of their communities, Kirchberger said. Anyone who wants to donate money or prizes to the event can contact Kirchberger at (262) 532-8723. GermantownThursday, Aug. 1, 5 to 9 p.m., at the police department: Since 2010, the village has held a Neighbors Against Crime Night Out event. The N.A.C. Night Out was organized by the group of individuals who participated in Leadership Germantownan annual program that encourages leadership abilities and skill buildingthat year, and is now largely run by dispatcher Laurie Schultz, who was a member of that class, with assistance from Dione Jeffrey of Distinct Photography. We used to have our own safety fair at the police department and this was based on the same principle as that, but on a bigger scale, she explained. Although the village event is not affiliated with the official NATW organization, the festivities are always held in early August and include the same type of crime-awareness and safety-promotion activitiesall at no cost to attendees. The point is to make it a completely free night for families to enjoy, Schultz said. We want them to learn that community safety begins with them and to expand the policefire-community relationship into something really positive. Along with dinner provided by Aldos RBar Pizza and Roberts Frozen Custard, the N.A.C. features a wide variety of activities such as tae kwon do demonstrations, a bounce house provided by Life Church, childrens games, music by a dee jay and a child ID station run by the Washington County Sheriffs Department. We also bring the fire department in for a vehicle extrication demonstration, which people love to see, and the police department does a taser demonstration, which always goes over really well, Schultz noted. The only problem for the tasing demo, she said with a laugh, is finding a volunteer. Families will also have the opportunity to learn how to set up a block watch program in their area. The main thing is building strong relationships within the community and helping residents to see that crime prevention starts in their neighborhoods, she said. There will also be raffles and attendees will receive one raffle ticket for each non-perishable food item donated for St. Boniface Food Pantry and/or gently used clothing item for Our Kids Closet. From 450 participants the first year, the event has grown into over 700 attendees, and all the fun and education is dependent on the generosity of the community, Schultz emphasized. Because the event is funded by donations from the public, anyone who would like to contribute can write a check payable to the Germantown Police Department with NAC Night in the memo portion. (All envelopes can be made to Schultzs attention.) My account is really low right now and if I dont get donations, future events are in jeopardy, said Schultz. Along with the donations of clothing and non-perishables, the police department will also be accepting brand new stuffed animals as well.

Music, parades and more at Lions Daze

Listen Up (top right photo) performs during Lions Daze, which was held at Sussex Village Park from July 12-14. The event is organized by the Sussex Lions Club. The Lions Daze parade was held July 13. Among the units participating in the parade were the Yankee Dutchman marching band (bottom left photo) and Brittanie Riemer, driving a 1951 John Deere tractor (bottom right photo).
