Description // A two sided folding brochure. Date // July 13, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe InDesign/Adobe Illustrator/Adobe Photoshop Objectives // Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. Process // In Adobe InDesign I created a document that had two pages. I had an idea to do a very simple folding brochure. I used ruler guides to help me figure out my layout and to see visually where everything would be folded. I then sketched out on paper what I thought would look best on the brochure, such as image placement. I chose my images for the brochure based upon color and how well they flowed together. I wanted it to display my best work but images that also worked well together. I then placed the images into my InDesign document. For my text wrap image I wanted to use a camera with its camera strap attached because it was long and skinny and made the text wrap very interesting. To create my image for the text wrap I used Photoshop and cut my image out by selecting it and then refining the edges to make it work just perfectly. I used paragraphs around my text wrap images with information about my company. For the front of my design I created a logo using Illustrator. However I was unable to get the look I wanted because I wanted the words and box to be tilted so I switched back to InDesign and was able to tilt it. My logo has a very light pink box below the heading of it. I wanted to incorporate that color again to add repetition so I created a gradient image on Photoshop and placed it on the inside of my brochure.

Description // A black and white flier that promotes a businesses leadership conference. Date // May 9, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe InDesign Objectives // Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo, and InDesign document to keep links intact. Process // The flier creating process started with sketching my ideas out. Afterwards I was provided with a choice of photos and the companys logo and used those items to help my design. Using InDesign I created a design where the title of the conference was very dramatic and showed contrast. I wanted my design to be simple and pleasing for the eye so I made sure to use an adequate amount of white space. Wanting to create a clean and sophisticated look I made sure everything was aligned properly. Repetition can be found in my use of the same line thickness, line locations, and fonts.

Description // A business card that fits a personal image of a company. Date // June 13, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe InDesign// Adobe Illustrator Objectives // Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator & InDesign. Process // I fist started to get ideas for the project online in place like Pinterest. Upon finding ideas I began my creative process. I open Adobe Illustrator and created the flowers that would go around my name by using the pen tool and the brush tool. After that I added text that would give information about who I was and where they could contact me. I kept my logo on the front of the card and kept the rest of the information including my name on the back of the card. I wanted my design simple so I added a thin line to breakup the information.

I open Adobe Illustrator and created the flowers that would go around my name by using the pen tool and the brush tool. I then created another document on Illustrator and took my logo from the front of my business card as well as my contact information from the back. The two matched each other well and followed the rule of cohesion when making a letterhead and business card.

Description // A full bleed advertisement that promotes a charity event being put on by Madewell.

Process // The process began by scanning an image I found from a catalog. I then did research on what kind of charity events involved shoes. I used information from that research to create an advertisement using Microsoft Word. I wanted something that would have a great amount of interest and color, be simple, and professional. The ad has a lot of repetition because of the use of the shoes and similar fonts that work together. I also included white space to provide an adequate amount of contrast.

Description // Three logo variations for a business. Date // June 8, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe Illustrator Objectives // Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image. Use the basic tools of Illustrator. Process // The companys name is Hey Dear so I wanted to incorporate something deer related. I found an image on Google of antlers and a silhouette of the deers body and drew both of those on Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool. After that I added text that had contrast because they were different fonts. I also kept everything black and white in color to keep a good flow and ad repetition.

Description // A personally taken photograph that has edited and formatted with Adobe Photoshop. Date // May 25, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe Photoshop Objectives // Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, and then download it. Size and crop the image. Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue and saturation levels. Use a selection tool to isolate a portion of the image. Desaturate the selected portion of the image. Use a filter or colorize a portion of the image. Process // I took an image of my roommate with my Cannon EOS 60D camera. Then I uploaded the photo to Adobe Photoshop. I cropped the image to be a 66 and then began a desaturation process by selecting parts that I wanted to be black and white. After I applied the desaturation I then added a light grain filter to the image.

Description // An inspirational poster made using Adobe Photoshop through masking and blending two images. Date // June 1, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe Photoshop Objectives // Learn to manage Photoshop layers. Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks. Use filters. Apply appropriate typography. Process // The process began with cropping the background image of the trees to be 11 X 8.5. I than added the smoke photo. Afterwards I created a mask and got rid of everything but the smoke from the second image by blending the images. I thought it provided good flow because the smoke worked well into the clouds of the tree image. Then I added text in two different contrasting fonts but that were the same color to continue the flow. I made sure that my text was not centered and that it would create a more interesting look. After working with text I added a sharpen to the image of the trees. It should be noted that I also placed a filter on the images in an editing program called Aperture. I used VSCO film filters; the tree image filter is called Kodak Portra 800 and the smoke image filter is called Ilford Delta 300.

Description // A webpage created to present a logo I designed. Date // June 29, 2013 Course & Instructor // COMM 130 Section 2 Eric Lybbert Programs & Tools // Adobe Photoshop// TextWrangler Objectives // Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS. Identify hex colors for web design. Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file. Process // Because I have never used HTML or CSS this was a great process of watching video tutorials and reading a lot about it online. I used TextWrangler for all my HTML and CSS work. After creating the HTML and adding my text of 202 words, I then connected it to the CSS that was provided using a code. In my CSS I changed fonts including back up fonts, colors through finding the hex color on Photoshop using the I-dropper, and border style. After finishing and checking my work on Safari I was ready to validate. I used validator.nu to do my validating and the process worked well and I was able to fix small errors.
