MEHRAN UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY, JAMSHORO. FIRST TERM SECOND YEAR (3RD TERM) B.E.

(TEXTILE) FOR 05-BATCH REGULAR EXAMINATION 2006. TEXTILE MECHANICS-I Dated: 02-06-2006. Time Allowed: 03 Hours. Max.Marks-80. NOTE : ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. Q.No. Marks 1. a) What is the significance of machines in textile Industry? Justify your answer by giving atleast two examples of its application in textile machinery. [10] b) The ring frame traveller is rotating at 15000 rev/min on a ring having diameter of 5 cm. Calculate its angular speed in rad/s and surface speed in m/s. [06] 2. a) Discuss displacement, velocity and acceleration as the applications of vectors. [08]

b) A yarn is being wound onto a cheese at 3000 rev/min. At a certain instant, the package diameter is 15 cm and the rate of traverse of the yarn guide is 6 m/s parallel to the axis of the cheese. Calculate the winding speed and the direction in which the yarn is laid. [08] 3. a) Drive following equations of uniform motion: i) ii) iii) iv) S = u t + f t2 (The Distance Acceleration Relation) v2 = u2 + 2 f S (The Velocity Distance Relation) v = 2 r / T (Surface Speed in Terms of Time Period) f = v2 / r (Uniform Circular Acceleration) [12]

b) A hydro-extractor is revolving at 16 rad/s. Calculate its period of rotation and the surface speed of the cage of hydro-extractor if the cage has a diameter of 2.5 m. [04] 4. a) Drive the equation for calculating the tension in rotating yarn. Calculate the tension in a yarn of 20 tex on the surface of a package revolving at a surface speed of 200 m/s. [06] b) What is angular S.H.M.? Drive the equation for calculating period of oscillations, T, of a simple pendulum and calculate the length of a seconds pendulum for an antique wall clock. [06] c) Following figure shows a weight of 20kg suspended at one end of cord and a force of 30kg is applied at other end of cord passing over a pulley. Neglecting weight of rope and pulley, calculate tension in cord. [04]

Contd on P/-2 (-2-) 5. a) Briefly discuss the following interrelationships and drive their equations: i) Mass and Force (F = mf) ii) Force, Time and Momentum (rate of change of momentum = F) iii) Work and Force (work done = force x distance moved) iv) Work and Energy (K.E. = mv2 and P.E. = mgh) v) Work, Power and Energy [02] [02] [02] [03] [02]

b) A ring frame traveller used in Question 1 (a), offers a resistance to movement of 0.15 N. If the frame has 250 spindles, calculate the power expended in moving the travellers. [05] 6. a) Give a detailed account of static coil friction and kinetic coil friction with textile examples and discuss the equation for calculating co-efficient of coil friction by Capstan Method with the help of a diagram. [08]

b) A let-off for a loom beam is arranged as shown in following figure. A band, fixed to the frame of the loom, is coiled around the weighing ruffle and attached to the weighing lever, which is pulled down by the weight. The ruffle diameter is 15 cm, and the effect of weight is equivalent to a 100 kg load suspended from the band. If the co-efficient of friction between the band and the ruffle is 0.18, calculate the work done against friction for a revolution of the beam if similar braking arrangements may be assumed at both ends of it. What do you know about the molecular structure of lubricants? Discuss the criteria of selecting a lubricant. [16] A body moves from rest with a constant acceleration of 5m/sec. Calculate the distance covered in 5 sec. [04]

8. a)

A 6 m long rope of weight 0.5 kg/m is hanging freely from a support. Calculate the work done in lifting the rope upto the support point. [04] A body is moving with a constant speed of 10m/sec in a circle of radius 10cm. Calculate its angular acceleration. [04] Two bodies of 100kg and 400kg are resting on two inclined planes and towards each other and the bodies are joined together by a spring passing over a pulley connected at the top of inclined planes. Coefficient of friction for two bodies with their inclined planes are u 1 and u2. Calculate the tension in spring? [04] -----------------THE END-----------------
