5 MW
The first Ecodesigned Wind Turbine Generator in the World Designed for Sustainability

WHAT IS ECODESIGN? Ecodesign is an expanded and improved version of the current techniques for product design and development, processes and services. Through the use of Ecodesign, Gamesa has systematically incorporated environmental practices into its product design to reduce the impact on the environment throughout all phases of the product lifecycle, such as procurement of raw materials and components, manufacturing, distribution, installation, operation, maintenance and decommissioning (from cradle to grave).

PHASE 0: DESIGN

N ew development concept: modular, lightweight and innovative design. F unctional optimization of product and its components C ompliance with the most demanding environmental regulations: low-impact materials selection, reduction of the number of materials used, elimination & minimization of hazardous substances and waste reduction. S election of low-impact materials: clean, renewable, low energy content, recycled and recyclable. R eduction of the amount of materials used, reducing transport volumes. S election of local, environmentally friendly suppliers. O ptimization of production technologies: fewer production processes, reduced energy consumption, less waste, fewer production consumables. R educed consumption of materials: reduction in weight. M inimization & elimination of hazardous substances: Gamesa G10X4.5 MW is free of asbestos, diuron, hexavalent chromium, halogens and PCBs (Polychlorinated Biphenyls).

PHASE 2: MANUFACTURING

PHASE 3: TRANSPORTATION

Optimization of transport logistics: with only four G10X4.5 MW wind turbine generators needed, instead of nine 2 MW or twenty-one 850 kW WTGs, less transport is required. All packaging shipped between Gamesa and its suppliers is reusable or recyclable All packaging shipped between Gamesa centers is reusable All packaging shipped between Gamesa and the wind farm is reusable or recyclable.

PHASE 4: INSTALLATION

Since fewer WTGs need to be installed for the same wind farm energy production, civil works, installation operations, assembly and erection operations are diminished. At the same time, waste generation, civil works noise emission, dust generation, resource consumption, wind farm wiring are reduced.

PHASE 5: OPERATION

Optimized reliability and durability minimizes downtime. Failure warning devices and spill retention systems are increased. The generation of wind energy by a single Gamesa G10X-4.5 MW WTG prevents the release of polluting emissions and natural resources consumption. The annual output of a single G10X WTG can meet the electricity needs of about 4,727 households per year and replace approximately 1,417 tonnes of oil equivalent (tonnes/year). It also prevents the atmospheric emission of 9,900 tonnes of CO2, 57 tonnes SO2 and 103 tonnes NOx annually. The annual energy production of this turbine avoids the emissions of 3,300 vehicles per year, which is equivalent to the amount of C02 absorbed by 1,650 hectares of trees.

PHASE 6: MAINTENANCE

The waste generated throughout the entire turbine lifecycle is greatly reduced*: L UBRICANT OIL: Gamesa G10X4.5 MW saves 31,590 liters over a 2 MW WTG. H IDRAULIC OIL: a 2 MW model consumes 23.3% more oil compared to the Gamesa G10X4.5 MW, saving 2,140 liters. A IR FILTERS: Gamesa G10X4.5 MW saves 60 filters in comparison to a 2 MW model.

PHASE 7: DECOMMISSIONING

Gamesa G10X4.5 MW employs a special decommissioning and dismantling manual that explains how to optimize the end of the turbine lifecycle by providing direction for product reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishing and recycling.
(* As measured on an 18 MW wind farm)

Gamesa G10X-4.5 MW demonstrates sustainability throughout the entire lifecycle by to the application of Ecodesign. Its possible to increase competitiveness during the manufacturing process, to make easier construction and maintenance works, to enhance its lifetime and to optimize their end of life.
Gamesa G10X4.5 MW key innovations
