Cells

Name ______________________ Date _____________ Code _____

All organisms are composed of cells and these cells carry on all life processes. Cells grow, reproduce, live for so long and die, respond to light and other environmental conditions, use energy and water, and get rid of waste etc. Plants and animals can be unicellular (one-celled) or multicellular (made of many cells). Most of the organisms on Earth are unicellular. Energy comes from the sun and is the source of almost all energy used to produce the food for living organisms. Plants capture that energy and convert it to chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis. In other words, plants make their own food through photosynthesis. ENERGY + H2O + CO2 SUGAR + O2 Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of the plant cell. The chloroplasts contain chlorophyll that absorbs the sunlight that is needed to produce the reaction above. Animals do not make their own food but eat plants or other animals for their energy.
