Whats Cooking?
I have recentlyfalleninlovewith sandwichesagain.WhydidIever breakupwiththeminthefirstplace? ItwasprobablythatyearIwentgluten free.WhileIdontloadupongluten anymore,Ialsodonteschewitand thatsleftsomespacetowelcome backafavoritefriend.Imnotsure whatitisaboutthesandwichthatissocaptivating.Maybeitsall theflavormeldedintoasingle,manageablebiteortheheartiness ofitall.Itmightbetheversatilityofthesandwich,abletoserveas amealorasnack,asaportablelunch,andevenbetterwhen youvegotleftoversofit.Ithinkitmustbeallofthose,andthats whyIenjoyedputtingthisissuetogethersomuch. Therangeofrecipesinthisissuerunthegamutfromquick,five minutesandwichesallthewaytosomecrazyculinaryendeavors. Thereispressurefromeverysideinmodern Americanlife.Thereispressuretogetthingsdone, pressuretolookacertainway,pressuretobethere foreveryone(includingyourself).Thosearejusta fewoftheexternalpressureswefaceeveryday.I alsofaceinternalpressure,nottheleastofwhichis adesiretoeatdelicious,healthyveganfood.There areseveralreasonsthisisahugedrivingforce.One isthatIamahobbittrappedinahumanwomans body.Ilovefood.LOVELOVELOVE.ButIalsolove usingsomethingassimpleasmylunchasawayto getotherpeoplethinking. Ithashappenedtousalllunchenvy.Especiallyat workorschoolyouseewhatsomeoneelsehasand instantlyyoustartthinkingaboutwhatyou brought.WhenIwasacollegestudent,Ibrought myownlunchandsnacks.Ihaveahabitofwanting tomunchwhenIamreadingandconcentratingsoI wouldcutupbellpeppers(atleasttwocolors)and throwthoseintoacontaineralongwithbaby carrotsandgrapetomatoes.AsImunchedmyway throughlectureIwasgettingmyveggiesinforthe dayandgettingmyclassmatesmindsmoving. Itdoesntcomewithaspecialsauce.Buteveryoneof thosehundredsofcaloriesmightbelacedwithasecret ingredient:Ractopamine. RussianRoulette?
