7 2/3/2008 Personal Solid Waste Inventory Lab Write up Purpose- This activity gives you the opportunity to investigate the materials that make up a typical individuals waste stream. You will examine the composition of your own waste materials for a week, classify types of waste, calculate the percentage of each type, compare with the national percents, and estimate your yearly contribution to landfills. Procedure- You will be collecting our trash for a week. Every day you will weigh in the amount of trash you have accumulated and separate it into different categories. At the end of the week you will do a finally weigh in and calculate the total percentage mass and then calculate the total mass of the recyclable items removed and then subtract the two. Conclusion-This was not an accurate account of the trash one accumulates because decisions were made to collecting trash such as choosing not to eat things which had wrappers.
