PROJECT DETAILS FOR ENGLISH


Std 9 2013-14

ENGLISH 1 (LANGUAGE) A total of TWO assignments, need to be undertaken which include the following: A. The Speaking Skills B. The Listening Skills Total marks allotted for the two components is 20 Guidelines for Speaking Skills Assessment 1. The assessment of English Speaking Skills will be conducted jointly by the subject teacher and the external examiner. 2. Each candidate will be given a question paper containing instructions and five topics of which he/she must choose one to speak on and discuss with the examiner. The candidates will be allowed one hour for preparation. 3. The candidate is required to speak for about two minutes. This presentation will be followed by a discussion with the examiners for about three minutes. 4. Examiners will assess the candidate individually and take the average of their combined scores. 5. 10 marks are awarded for Speaking Skills on the following criteria a. Fluency b. Subject Matter c. Organisation d. Quality of Language Guidelines for Listening Skills Assessment 1. A passage will be read aloud by the examiner twice. During the readings you may make brief notes on the rough paper you have been given. 2. At the end of the second reading, you will answer the questions in ink on the question paper. The duration of the assessment is 30 minutes, which includes the time taken for the two readings and answering the questions on the paper. 3. 10 marks are awarded for the Listening Skills Test

ENGLISH 2 (LITERATURE)

A. Prose: The Treasure Trove of Short Stories 1. The Tiger in the Tunnel and Indias Heroes both these texts address a most commendable quality in human beings, namely, bravery. Using the texts as reference, elaborate on how the main characters in both the stories exemplify this quality. OR 2. The universality of the themes in The Kabuliwalla overcomes the barriers of time and region and leaves the reader with a lump in the throat. Comment on some themes you discovered in the story.

B. Drama: The Merchant of Venice Shakespeare 1. Analyse the major characters in The Merchant of Venice Antonio, Bassanio, Portia, Shylock as they unfold in Act 1 of the play. Mention the major events in Act 1 that introduce these characters and their traits. OR 2. Act 1 introduces to us, a sad Antonio. Antonio seems to have it all. Why, then, is Antonio so sad? Why doesnt he know the cause of his sadness? What guesses do Solanio and Salerio have about the causes of his depression? What is Gratianos response to Antonios A stage where every man must play a part, And mine a sad one What lifts his depression? Detail your response with references to the text, citing relevant dialogues / excerpts. General Guidelines 1. The word limit for each project is about 750 to 1000 words. Do not exceed the word limit. 2. The project has to be neatly handwritten. 3. Though you may seek help from friends, books, websites, teachers, etc., please remember that the project is seeking to test YOUR understanding and analysis of the texts you are studying. Hence copy-paste projects from websites, books or past projects will not be given any marks. 4. QUALITY, not quantity is the essence of a project. So focus on content not length. 5. The deadline for project submission must be honoured. 6. Your project will be evaluated on the following criteria: i. Understanding of the text (Narrative) ii. Examples from the text iii. Interpretation and evaluation of the text iv. Appreciation of language and characterisation v. Critical appreciation (Personal Response)
