Third, to explain what MEPs actually do and how the EU works. Boris and Syed are promoting London across the world I have made good progress on all three goals, but there is always more to do. For more articles and information about my work as an MEP, my support for a new relationship with the continent and my priorities for London, please visit: www.syedkamall.com Standing up for Britain in Brussels In Brussels I work to promote British interests on the International Trade and the inluential Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee. I have been working with colleagues from across Europe and from across the Atlantic for an EU-US trade agreement. I am delighted that President Obama has now given the green light to the talks. I am also working on trade agreements with Japan and many of the fast growing economies in Asia. I am the lead MEP on the new trade deal with Singapore. London is not only home to Europe's two largest inancial districts. It is a leading global inancial centre. While there are lessons to be learned from the inancial crisis, we should not let our European neighbours hijack the agenda to undermine London. Receiving the "International legislator of the year"award for my work on transatlantic relations. I owe the privilege of serving my fellow countrymen to the hard work of Conservative activists and to the loyalty of Londons Conservative voters. The least I can do is repay that support by spending a few days a week speaking at events, helping with lealets, delivery and campaigning with Conservative activists. Supporting Conservatives back in London My key policy priorities for the next ive years 1) Regain sovereignty in 2017 through a new Treaty which restores British democracy. 2) Negotiate more trade agreements that help British businesses, whether we are in or out of the EU after 2017. 3) Limit the damage done by Brussels to the City of London and restore the power to regulate inancial services to our Westminster Parliament. F or as long as Britain remains part of the European Union we need to fght strongly for the best deal for London and Londoners. Thats been my guiding principle since 1999 when I was frst elected to the European Parliament. Our campaign slogan back then was In Europe, not run by Europe, and that still encapsulates my approach to the EU today. Since I became an MEP the European Parliament has become increasingly powerful, and the EU whether we like it or not plays an important part in the life of London and Londoners. I share Prime Minister David Camerons vision of a looser, more fexible EU in which Britain thrives. I support renegotiating the balance of power between London and Brussels, followed by an in/out referendum in 2017. Our region needs infuential and committed representatives in the European Parliament. As your longest-serving Conservative MEP I am proud to be leading Londons voice in the EU ensuring our region benefts to the maximum. Dr Charles Tannock MEP L E A D I N G I N L O N D O N I work hard to ensure your voice is heard. I am pleased that the Sunday Telegraph has ranked me the UKs best-value MEP. I left full-time work in 1996 to raise my children but continued working part-time as a consultant in various roles in the financial sector. My children are nearly grown up now and should be ready to look out for themselves but I am deeply concerned for the financial future of their generation. Eye watering levels of debt have become a way of life both at individual and governmental level and we need a return to an understanding that budgets should be balanced within the lifetime of those responsible for the borrowing. Nowhere is this problem more obvious than in Europe.
As well as being heavily involved in local politics, I am fluent in French and have seen at first hand the inequalities of the European Project.
The financial recklessness of the Blair and Brown governments has eroded our countrys financial credibility. Our ability to renegotiate our role in Europe is impaired by the fact that we cannot offer the City as an example of financial competence. Yet that is exactly what it was and must be again. In London and, by extension in Europe, the Conservative party must champion financial prudence, personal accountability and sensible regulation with the objective of making the City a driver of our economy of which we might once again even be proud.

Reform of the European Court of Human Rights remains the central focus of the UK. The current backlog of cases will take over 100 years to be heard, and is growing all the time. A large number of countries agree with us that reform is long overdue and that the Court should only be examining cases where the law is uncertain, not allowing every individual to take personal disputes there. Lynne Hack representing the UK in Strasbourg. A Better Deal from Europe The EU is not working for the UK. Since monetary union, our relationship has changed with countries in the Eurozone. They need a better system of control, and we need a looser relationship with them. There is no need for us to be bound by regulations that restrict our economic viability, we only need to comply with EU regulations on goods we sell to the EU. We need to radically re-negotiate our relationship with the EU and repatriate powers on our working conditions and justice if we are even to consider remaining part of the EU.

But to preserve our prosperity, the EU laws that threaten it must be reformed. Europe has lost sight of its purpose. It no longer promotes free trade, growth and prosperity. If our economic future and way of life is to prosper, things will have to change. I want to go to the European Parliament to stop the laws which suffocate our economy, threaten jobs and endanger our way of life. Ill have three priorities: The Financial Sector The EUs system ignores the principles on which free trade under the rule of law prospers. It rules by bureaucratic at, not principle. Laws can be badly informed, poorly drafted and the consequences devastating for growth. I would work so our thriving sector can compete globally and trade feely under the rule of law. Jobs and Employment Layer upon layer of EU law has pushed up production costs and makes British goods less competitive in global markets. Market share is lost to leaner non-EU economies. Growth is stunted by huge costs. Employment law must be brought back to Britain. Saving Sovereignty Our Way of Life Britains law, custom and entrepreneurial zest have over centuries made it a free, prosperous and dynamic economy. Its linguistic and artistic heritage brings cultural richness; freedom under the rule of law brings liberty; parliamentary sovereignty guarantees that liberty against usurpers at home, and tyrants abroad. Im proud to have proposed with Martin Howe QC the blueprint for the European Union Act 2011 which afrmed the principle that the UK Parliament could, if it wished, strike down EU law. Sheila Lawlor Dear Fellow Conservative, The EU has hit the headlines yet again, with a plan to ban olive oil jugs from restaurant tables. However, the people of Europe gave insufcient support and so the plan was withdrawn. The plan was the brainchild of Dacian Ciolos, the Agriculture Commissioner. Mr Ciolos is not elected, but that does not prevent him or his fellow Commissioners promoting an ever more extreme version of the European project one which fewer and fewer people trust. In Germany for instance, distrust for the project has soared to 58 per cent (from 37) in the past ve years. From Italy and France, the story is much the same.* Though the Euro crisis increased such distrust, it is only part of the explanation. More people now recognise that their livelihoods will suffer if the outlandish direction of European rule is unchecked. Indeed their jobs may follow, where their way of life is going. In Britain, all but the most ardent Eurosceptics have woken up to the problem. The initial aim of free trade and greater prosperity has been so dissipated that only a seismic makeover will bring it back. Our industries contend with thousands of pages of EU legislation, some of it irrelevant, most of it damaging. Whether its the insurance industrys Solvency II or the Alternative Investment Fund Managers directive, the principles on which free trade depends in a market system under the rule of law, have been abandoned by the EU. So when it comes to renegotiation, Britain will not be alone. Italy and Germany each has a growing Eurosceptic population. In Italy, the Five Star movement won almost 27 per cent of the vote earlier this year. And Germanys brand new party, Alternativ fur Deutschland (AFD), not only calls for an exit from the Euro, but for powers to be brought home from Brussels. Whatever their politics, those now against the European project recognise that success can only begin at home. Economic well-being must be recovered if we and other countries are to survive in a global market. A different system is needed: one which encourages success, encourages businesses to prosper, encourages healthy competition. For that the fundamental principles of law making must change. Every sector has its olive oil jug history. Most similar ascos are too technical, or too deeply buried in unspeakable acronyms, to have hit the headlines. Yet the cry to repatriate powers will chime with many sectors, in many countries where politicians have not had the power, or shown the will, to stop laws damaging to national economies. For this we need the radical reform which will allow Britain to compete in a global economy stretching from Beijing to Brazil. It is this that the people of Europe can sense and why they no longer believe in the European project that confronts them today. It is this which has inspired the strong scepticism in Britain of the increasingly outdated European State. And it will inspire me and others who share the same goal for this country and its future. Yours ever, I am Director of the think tank Politeia, and a former Research Fellow in Modern British History of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. As an active member of my local Conservative Association, I have continued to stand as a candidate for our local council elections. When it comes to Europe, Britain is no longer alone *For the ve years ending 2012.
