July 23, 2013 Honorable Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, Chair Transportation Committee Seattle City Council PO Box 34025

Seattle, WA 98124-4025 RE: Urging Rejection of the Alley Vacation proposed for the Mega-project at Fauntleroy and Alaska Dear Councilmember Rasmussen: As West Seattle business owners, residents, civic organizations, workers, parishioners, shoppers and visitors, we have many concerns regarding the existing proposal for 4755 Fauntleroy. We believe smart development gets it right by creating good jobs, vibrant small and locally-owned businesses and a walkable, livable community. The Fauntleroy and Alaska junction is the gateway to West Seattle. The new "megaproject" proposed for the 4755 Fauntleroy block--with more than 300 apartments, 650 parking spaces, and national chain stores--does not take us in the right direction. For this reason, we strongly support the Mayors statement of opposition to the proposed transfer of public property to the developers of this mega-block (letter to SDOT, 7/15/13). This project, if approved, would be the largest multi-use development ever built in West Seattle. While acquisition of a public right of way would greatly increase these developers profits, the project in its current form will: increase West Seattles traffic and congestion; degrade pedestrian safety; create low-wage jobs and housing unaffordable to those workers; drive away existing local, small businesses; and set a lower standard for future development in West Seattle.

We are aware that the Seattle City Council has final authority over alley vacations. We urge you as chair of the Councils Transportation Committee to let the Executives decision stand. As the Mayors letter states: In this instance it is difficult to see how the alley vacation proposal meets our public benefit standards when it does not support equitable economic development as stated in our Comprehensive Plan, does not support community vibrancy and walkability, and does not support our local urban design plans. As you can see from the website, gettingitright4ws.org, our community wants to see and support a quality development on this site, but we agree with the Mayor that this proposal does not meet West Seattles or the City of Seattles standards. SIGNED:
