America was first inhabited for thousands of years by Native Americans that descended from indigenous tribes from Asia. Christopher Columbus landed in America in 1492. The United States gained its independence from Britain after fighting the Revolutionary War. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. In the 1860's the fight against slavery was fought between the northern and southern states in the Civil War. The Northern antislavery states won the war and freedom for African Americans. The United States had important roles in both WWI and WWII.
