CMG Construction Consultant / Surveyor of the Year 2010

1. One Step Ahead

For more than 27 years Murphy Surveys has been a pioneer of innovative surveying solutions leading the market with over 25 different services for any survey requirement. Our commitment to innovation has led us to always be one step ahead and develop new solutions for existing and potential needs. For instance, in response to more frequent and disruptive floods we have recently introduced the Flood Survey Team with highly experienced hydrographic, geographic and geophysical surveyors who attend flood sites 24/7 to gather vital data to manage the flood, prevent damage and casualties and assist re-construction.

2. Projects
Murphy Surveys has been involved in hundreds of major and minor projects in the last 12 months within many sectors including: Railway Education Industrial Utilities Conservation Residential

For the purpose of this application it is worth mentioning the following projects.

2.1 Limerick Tunnel

At a cost of over 500 million, the Limerick Tunnel is one of the largest projects in Ireland. The National Road Authority instructed us to ensure that everything was built as designed and tolerances were respected. Multiple site control and setting-out surveys were carried out for 12 bridges, 10km of road and the tunnel. The accuracy required on parts of the tunnel structure (+/- 0.5mm tolerance), was a surveying challenge. It reminded us that without the knowledge of geometrical and arithmetical laws not even the newest technology can fulfil such requirements (under field conditions). What the equipment can not do per standard configuration can be achieved by using angle measurement. Our approach was unique in the way we used new equipment combined with old techniques, which are nowadays nearly forgotten in order to achieve the highest results.

2.2 Malahide Estuary Bridge

In August 2009, a 20-metre section of the viaduct across Malahide Estuary collapsed, narrowly avoiding tragedy. An emergency team was called upon to begin high-level monitoring to establish the causes of the accident, prevent further damage and assist re-construction. In 24 hours a full Laser Topographic survey of the area was carried out. Monitoring equipment was then installed and Hydrographic surveys and monitoring carried out. To overcome the unique surveying requirements, we developed bespoke sea-water resistant tilt sensors and cables in collaboration with our long-term partner Geodata. Working closely with the Irish National Rail Network engineers Murphy Surveys prevented further damage and casualties by stopping the re-construction when the vibrations caused by heavy duty machinery exceeded the safety requirements.

3. Customer Satisfaction
At Murphy Surveys we developed a Customer Care Policy that sets out clear standards of service and regularly reviews performance. We provide clear information about our services, which is readily accessible. All enquiries and complaints are dealt with in a prompt manner. Clients and prospects are regularly consulted and based on their feedback we improve our offerings. We recently commissioned a market research to investigate the value proposition within clients and prospects to further improve our services.
