The Book of Proverbs Chapter 14

Proverbs 14:1 Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down
with her hands.

Every wise woman buildeth her house: Ruth was a virtuous woman
Ruth And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses.
4:11 The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like
Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah,
and be famous in Bethlehem:
Ruth And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of
4:12 the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.
Ruth So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the
4:13 LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
Ruth And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee
4:14 this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
Ruth And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age:
4:15 for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons,
hath borne him.

Wisdom is being prepared:

Proverbs Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
9:1
Proverbs She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also
9:2 furnished her table.
Proverbs Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is
24:3 established:
Proverbs And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and
24:4 pleasant riches.

Read Proverbs 31 gives praises to a beautiful, wonderful wife who does all she can
to make sure you have a happy home.

but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

Q. What are some ways that a person can pluck down their house with their own hands?

A. Seven verses in the book of Proverbs that explain how a person can pluck down their
house with their own hands:

A wicked mouth

Proverbs By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the
11:11 mouth of the wicked.

Being Greedy:

Proverbs He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; but he that hateth gifts
15:27 shall live.

People who are willing to lie and steal in order to increase their riches are having
their households torn down by the flying roll in Zechariah 5.

Zechariah Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.
5:1
Zechariah And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll;
5:2 the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.
Zechariah Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the
5:3 whole earth: for every one that stealeth shall be cut off as on this side
according to it; and every one that sweareth shall be cut off as on that side
according to it.
Zechariah I will bring it forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house
5:4 of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by my name: and
it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber
thereof and the stones thereof.

Bringing strife into the home:

Proverbs Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of
17:1 sacrifices with strife.

Rewarding evil:

Proverbs Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

Refusing to cease from strife:

Proverbs It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be
20:3 meddling.

Always looking for a brawl:

Proverbs It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling
25:24 woman and in a wide house.

Proverbs 14:3 In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall
preserve them.

Proverbs 14:4 Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength
of the ox.

Without the help of an ox there can be no crop, but with a strong ox a big crop is
possible.

I Timothy Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially
5:17 they who labour in the word and doctrine.
I Timothy For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the
5:18 corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

Proverbs 14:5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

An honest witness tells the truth; a dishonest witness tells lie.

Zechariah These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his
8:16 neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:
Zechariah And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and
8:17 love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.

Proverbs 14:6 A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto
him that understandeth.

A scorner seeketh Jesus, and findeth Him not: but knowledge is easy unto him that
has the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the

Proverbs 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools

Proverbs 14:10 The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not

Proverbs 14:11 The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the

Revelation Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are

Proverbs Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own

Proverbs 14:13 Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is
heaviness.

Sorrow may hide behind laughter, and happiness may end in sorrow.

Luke Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now!

Proverbs 14:14 The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good
man shall be satisfied from himself.

You reap what you sow.

Proverbs 14:16 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is

John Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

John He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine
9:11 eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and
washed, and I received sight.
John Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

John And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

John Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said
9:15 unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
John Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth
9:16 not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such
miracles? And there was a division among them.
John They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened
9:17 thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
John But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received
9:18 his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.
John And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how
9:19 then doth he now see?
John His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he
9:20 was born blind:
John But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we
9:21 know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
John These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had
9:22 agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put
out of the synagogue.
John Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

John Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the
9:24 praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
John He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I
9:25 know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
John Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

John He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would
9:27 ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
John Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’
9:28 disciples.
John We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from
9:29 whence he is.
John The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye
9:30 know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
John Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of
9:31 God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
John Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that
9:32 was born blind.
John If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

John They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost

Proverbs 14:20 The poor is hated even of his own neighbour: but the rich hath many
friends.

You have no friends if you are poor, but you have lots of friends if you are rich.

James For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel,
2:2 and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
James And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit
2:3 thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under
my footstool:
James Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

Proverbs 14:21 He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the
poor, happy is he.

It’s wrong to hate others, but God blesses everyone who is kind to the poor.

I Timothy Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust
6:17 in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to
enjoy;
I Timothy That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute,
6:18 willing to communicate;
I Timothy Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to
6:19 come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

Proverbs 14:22 Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them
that devise good.

Proverbs Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth

Idle chatter leads only to poverty. Talk is cheap. There were chief rulers in Jesus’ day
that said that they believed in Jesus and that he was Lord, but they were afraid of
what others would say about them:

John Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of
12:42 the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the
synagogue:
John For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

Proverbs 14:24 The crown of the wise is their riches: but the foolishness of fools is folly.
Wisdom can make you rich, but foolishness leads to more foolishness.

We are warned in scripture about allowing men take our reward:

Proverbs 14:26 In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have

In John Chapter four, Jesus explains the living waters to the woman of Samaria. The
fear of the LORD is a fountain of life:

Fools talk foolishness. They make plans to do sinful things:

Isaiah For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to

of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.
Isaiah The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy
32:7 the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.
Isaiah But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

Proverbs 14:35 The king’s favour is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him
that causeth shame.

Matthew Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over
