GIE-201: Introduction to GIS & Remote Sensing Course Outline

Course Description The objective of this course is to gain an understanding of Remote Sensing, basic cartographic issues, GIS concepts, and their use in a specific GIS and Image processing applications. This course provides an intensive introduction to digital mapping, spatial analysis and integration of remote sensing data with GIS. The students learn how to create their own maps, and how to use GIS & Image processing software to analyze geographic problems and learn spatial analysis techniques that can be applied to a wide variety of subject areas, both with Environmental Engineering and in other disciplines. The course is designed to accommodate students from a variety of research backgrounds with no previous GIS experience. The Goal is to provide students with a theoretical understanding of Remote sensing data, integration with GIS, analysis concepts and to introduce the practical tools needed to create and manage spatial data, perform spatial analysis, image processing and communicating the results into a well-designed map. Credit Hours: 3 hrs (2+1) Contact Hours: 4 hrs (2+2) per week Duration: 12 Sep 2011 13 January 2012 Requirements Attendance: Regular attendance will be appreciated and the required attendance for successful completion of the course must not be less than 75%. Grading: The final result and grades will be formulated as per NUST Statutes issued in May 2005. Evaluation: The students will be evaluated for their understanding of both conceptual and practical material offered in the course. There will be compulsory assignments, regular quizzes, mid-semester and final-semester exams. The marks allocations are as follows:
