Dear Students, Parents, and Reading Guardians, Summer Program 2013 Welcome to summer break! Enjoy the sunshine. Sleep a little later. Play baseball. Earn a little money. Have a creemee (or two). Go for a swim. And...read a couple of good books! We all look forward to the summer season and to a well-deserved break from the daily requirements of academia. While we can use this time to relax and reflect, its equally important, however, to remain intellectually engaged and curious. Summer reading will help you to do just that. Assigned tasks during your months away from school are necessary for a few reasons. It is important not to lose ground between June and late August, to prepare for the challenges/demands of the curricula, and to develop an appreciation for reading. With this in mind, we have prepared two tasks for you to work on. Both of these tasks need to be turned into your English teacher (regardless of semester) by Friday, September 6, 2013. You will be required to read two books this summer. One reading assignment is a free choice, and the other is a choice book from the enclosed reading lists. The books listed on the enclosed list are available from the Spaulding High School Library until the end of the school year. During the summer, these books will be available through the Aldrich Public Library. Have a safe, enjoyable, and relaxing summer.
1. Your Summer Reading Project will count for 5% of the first quarter grade in your English class.
2. Break Down of Your Grade: 80% for the Summer Reading Project 20% for the completed Accountability Page
3. Please turn in a copy of the Book Project Assessment Rubric with the top portion completed. A blank copy of the Rubric is located in this brochure.
4. Projects (including a completed Accountability Page and a blank Assessment Rubric) are due to your English teacher by Friday, September 6, 2013. Projects turned in up to 2 weeks past the due date will be penalized one full letter grade. Beyond 2 weeks, projects will not be accepted and therefore earn a grade of zero.
Complete the Accountability Page found on the next page. Bring the Accountability Page to your English Teacher by Friday, September 6, 2013.
