Add salt and turmeric powder to the dal. Pressure cook the dal with sufficient water for about 3-4 whistles. Mash the dal gently. In a small kadai, heat the ghee. Add the chopped onions, tomatoes and garlic. Mix well. Stir fry for a few minutes. Add asafoetida and chopped green chilies. Add this to the dal and mix well. Add the garam masala. Mix well. Boil the dal for 3-4 minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves. Serve hot with hot rotis and steamed rice.
