Long Prairie Area Relay For Life Set for July 26th
All the planning and preparation for the 12th annual Long Prairie Area Relay For Life is complete. The committee has been preparing for this event since February and is now ready for the Relay which will be this Friday, July 26th, from 5 p.m. until 5 a.m. Saturday morning at the Long Prairie Grey Eagle High School track. After the event officially begins at 5 p.m. the Silent Auction will start at 5:30 p.m. and run through 8:30 p.m. During the day teams will be setting up camp sites along the track and preparing for the Relay. Co-chairs Angie Berkness and Sev Blenkush will be announcing the program which begins at 7 p.m. The presentation of Flags will be led by American Legion Post 12 followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem sung by Misty Cowell and Kathy Nichols, who are daughters of committee member Vonnie Hecht. The invocation will be given by Pastor Andrew Brown from the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie. This years guest speaker is Darcy Pesta, a cancer survivor diagnosed in August 2008 with NonHodgkins Lymphoma, who will deliver her inspirational story about her battle with cancer. Sev Blenkush will then present plaques to the Bronze level sponsors of the Relay. These are sponsors who have contributed at the $1000 level. Notably are the Lions clubs from Browerville, Long Prairie, Grey Eagle - Burtrum, and Swanville who have all been Bronze sponsors for the last ten years. Also the Coaches vs. Cancer Browerville High School contribution of Coach Bob Schueller and his wife Joan who lead the effort annually. Next will be the Survivor Lap with the banner carried by survivors Duane Lorsung and Dave Anderson. Survivors are listed by name as they walk the track and release balloons after completion of the lap. The 15 registered teams at the Relay then walk the track. At dusk the Luminaria Ceremony will begin. Team captains will light the luminaria surrounding the track. These are in memory of individuals who have survived cancer or have succumbed to it. It is both inspirational and emotional. The luminaria remain lit throughout the evening while team members walk the track. Special music will be provided by Loren Cowell. Snooky Noble and Jeri Nelson will then do the Empty Table presentation which depicts the change in daily life after an individual has been taken by cancer. The ceremony will conclude with a Continued on page 12.

Alice Steinmetz and family presented a donation to the Browerville Fire Dept. in honor of Jerry 'Big Eddie' Steinmetz. The department plans on putting the funds toward a new slide in unit for the back of their grass rig.

adults. The online course takes about nine hours to complete and is interactive with narration, quizzes and final exam. Both the main course and field day include a virtual range where students can shoot various firearms and action types at a variety of targets and distances. Theres even instruction on how to properly sight-in rifles and pattern a shotgun. This is a great addition to our computer based adult safety training programs, Hammer said. We think it will be a huge success and create even more safe hunters. For a link to the course go to www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/firearm s_isa/index.html.

St. Croix State Park to celebrate 80th anniversary of Civilian Conservation Corps with musical tribute
In honor of the 80th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), two special musical programs will take place at St. Croix State Park in Hinckley on Saturday, July 27, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said. The programs will feature music and storytelling by Michigan-based author and performer Bill Jamerson, who has performed at CCC reunions around the country and at dozens of national and state parks. Dressed in costume, Jamerson will take his audience on a musical journey with stories and songs about working in the woods, living in a bunkhouse, the hardships of river drives, the importance of camp food, and going into town in spring. At 1 p.m., Jamerson will salute Minnesota lumberjacks with a program titled, Its Daylight in the Swamps, a phrase shouted by cooks at lumberjack camps to wake up the men in the morning. With guitar in hand, he will sing traditional lumberjack songs and tell stories about life in the lumber camps. The program is geared toward families, and children will be invited on stage for a sing-along and a chance to win prizes. Meet at the council ring. At 5 p.m., he will pay tribute to the CCC with a program titled, "Dollar-A-Day Boys." It will feature stories and songs, including Chowtime, an entertaining look at camp food, and City Slicker, which tells of the mischief the boys find in the woods. Meet at the council ring. The CCC was a federal work program created by President Franklin Roosevelt during The Great Depression. From 19331942, 84,000 young men between the ages of 17 and 25 enlisted from Minnesota. They planted more than 180 million trees, fought forest fires, built dams and bridges and left a legacy of log and stone buildings at several state parks, including St. Croix State Park. Purchase bear licenses by Aug. 1; youth licenses free until then

Hunters selected in this years bear lottery must purchase their licenses by Thursday, Aug. 1, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said. Licenses not purchased by the deadline will become available first-come, first-served at noon Wednesday, Aug. 7. Youths age 10-12 can receive a free no-quota bear license until Aug. 1. No-quota licenses will be available for purchase after Aug.1 but youth younger than 13 will have to pay the full price of $44 because of an inadvertent change in state law that eliminated the 1012 year old exemption from this fee. Youths who purchase leftover licenses in regular bear permit areas also will have to pay the adult price. The free 10-12 youth bear licenses were not addressed when youth license simplification changes were approved during the last Legislative session. The DNR will propose changes to reinstate youth fee exemptions in 2014.

Paul Drinkwine at Music in the Park

Paul Drinkwine will perform at Music in the Park Series in Staples on Sunday, July 28, at 7:00 PM. Paul started playing guitar in 1969. His main influence was Michael Johnson and he wore out several albums listening and learning from Johnsons music. This learning by ear led the self-taught guitarist into a finger-style technique. Drinkwine labels his music as folkie with a classical edge and has recorded three CDs including Cold Wind, Dont Tell Your Mother, and The Early Years. The Music in the Park Concerts will be held in the Northern Pacific (NP) Park in Staples on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM and will run through August 18. First August Canada goose season

Minnesota will conduct its first August Canada goose season from Saturday, Aug. 10 to Sunday, Aug. 25, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said. The states Canada goose population is very high and exceeds our statewide goal, said Steve Cordts, the DNRs waterfowl specialist. We have continued agricultural depredation concerns in the western portion of the state with large numbers of Canada geese. This is one more option for us to try and increase our harvest of Canada geese. Hunting will be restricted to an intensive harvest zone in west-central Minnesota. The daily bag limit will be 10 Canada geese with no possession limit. Shooting hours will be from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. A small game hunting license, special goose permit and state waterfowl stamp are required. Its hard to gauge what hunter participation will be since this is the first time we have had August goose hunting, Cordts said. But for those who are interested, there should be ample opportunity. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approved the hunt as a management option for states dealing with overabundant populations of resident Canada geese. Additional details are on the DNR website at www.mndnr.gov/waterfowl. The DNR will announce details of fall waterfowl seasons, including the September Canada goose hunt, in early August.

Online firearms safety hunter course now available for adults

Minnesota residents 18 and older can now take the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources firearms (DNR) safety hunter education course online. The new training option includes a virtual field day that emphasizes responsible gun handling and hunting safety. Students who complete the course are issued a voucher that they can use to complete their certification immediately or attend an instructor led field day. This will greatly increase certification accessibility to working adults and military personnel who traditionally have conflicts trying to scheduling a multi-week classroom course, said Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR Enforcement education program coordinator. Minnesota and Iowa are the first states to offer this option for

Chore time
When a person lives on a farm, naturally they have a certain number of livestock. My son, Damon, has a small farm, so his livestock numbers are rather limited. He has two horses and a pack of dogs. This week he had to be away for a training related to work, so naturally, it was up to Dad to do his chores while he was away. It works out well as he has to return the favor when my wife and I are gone. At this time of year, the horses are no problem at all. They eat grass and make fertilizer. As long as they have water, life is good. The dogs, on the other hand, are a bit more labor intensive. He has dogs for hunting coyotes and dogs for hunting coons. He also has one dog that specializes in guarding the house, watching television, and laying about on the couch. Boudreaux is the designated watch dog. He is a standard poodle that reminds a person of the lazy brother-in-law that comes By Walter Scott to visit. When Damon is gone, Bou comes to our house. He prefers air conditioning, a soft couch, and Animal Planet on television. He is no problem to have around, since I also rather like Animal Planet. He would prefer I bring his food to him, especially if there is a good program on, but he doesnt complain loudly. Its amazing to watch a dog watch television. It causes a person to wonder how much they can understand. Hell look away or go do something else when commercials come on, unless of course they have dogs in them. After the commercial, he is back on the couch, staring at the screen. Heaven help anyone that tries to break in our house with Bou on guard, especially if Dogs 101 is on. The coyote hounds at Damons place require food and water. Only a brave person would dare release them for a bit of exercise. Those dogs like to hunt and when released, they go hunting. They will not go for a walk or even a light run. When off the leash, they run full speed until they find a coyote track and will run on the track until they find the coyote. This wouldnt be bad if they caught their prey in the north forty, but the coyote may run for several miles before its cornered. I leave the coyote dogs tied up since I dont want to spend the next few days looking for dogs I misplaced from good intentions. The other dogs are three terriers. He uses the terriers for hunting raccoons. They are friendly little dogs, if they know you, and not so friendly if they dont. Terriers arent very big, but in the pack there are a lot of teeth and even more attitude. They can whip anything in the world and nobody is going to tell them different. Fortunately, the terriers like me. They sit on my lap to be petted and talked to and they also mind when I tell them something, usually. The one, Sally, needs medicine this week while Damon is gone. Not a problem. Last night I called her over, scooped her up, and held her to give her pill. Im not in the habit of suddenly scooping a dog off the ground, knowing its a good way to lose parts of a face or fingers. Sally is not accustomed to being scooped off the ground either. She wasnt impressed. Tonight, when I went to do chores, Sally wouldnt come within ten feet of me. My wife convinced her we werent going to kill her and I was able to give her the medicine. By tomorrow night, she may miss a dose since she now thinks both my wife and I are evil. The good thing about doing someone elses chores is they eventually come home. A person just has to keep the animals alive, or in the case of Boudreaux, alive and entertained.

Letter from the Country

We can see the end of July!!! It seems that is the hottest month of the year. My grandma always said August was the hottest month, but for me July is the test of summer. Once we are into August, even though we will have some hot days, fall is close enough for me to hang in there until the cool nights arrive. There are people that dont mind the heat--yes, even members of my family!! In fact, Sonny has been asking me if I have turned down the thermostat the last few nights as he is COLD--I mean that just cant be possible. The thermostat is set at 72, night and day. Well, to tell the truth I have put it at 70 when I have been in a flurry of housework--but dont tell him that. Anyway, he always has to cover up with a blanket, no matter how hot it is, and I am laying without even the sheet pulled up as I am too warm. In the winter I am fine with blankets, but in the summer it just seems wrong somehow. My friend, Patti, called from Arizona Sunday afternoon. Sonny and I are thinking of taking a trip there in the late fall or late winter. My grandson Justin is in the Air Force and stationed in Tucson. His birthday is in August and I was invited to drive down there with his family to see him-but August in Tucson--not on my best day!! I will stay here and try to spend the day with his twin sister in Duluth. More my style and temperature. Anyway, we are hoping to visit him when the weather is cooler there and colder here. We would of course stop at Pattis too while in the state. I asked her how hot it was there yesterday, she is about 60 miles north of Phoenix. She said I didnt want to know, but it was cooler than it had been a few days ago. It had hit 121--I would die!! But its really cools off at night she said. I has been down to 76. Remember, my thermostat is set at 72 and when I am working or baking I feel way too warm. I live in the right state I guess, mosquitoes and all. We had our 18 month old grandson this weekend and I hired my nieces daughter to help out on Saturday, as my knees still dont want to be down on the floor--and if they do get on the floor (as I have a couple of times) they protest getting up again. So, I try to keep myself upright or sitting, not kneeling. Anyway, we took him outside to the sandbox and he loved it, but the mosquitoes found him before too long and we had to bring him back in the house. He did not want to go back in, he cried and squirmed and had a little meltdown, but the mosquitoes are just so vicious we had to. It didnt take him too long to calm down. He has a blankie that he loves, so after he got that and some toys he was ok again. He is a busy little guy, as all 18 months old are, and he really tires me out, so having Tateum there was a life saver. I tried a new recipe this weekend too. I love to try new recipes--I have a book shelf full of recipe books, plus a box full that I have printed off, waiting to be sorted out and put in books. I have started books of Mexican, Breakfast, Italian, Soups, etc. to make the recipes easier to find. Nothing is more frustrating than knowing you have a really good recipe for something and not being able to find it as it is just stuffed into a recipe book willy-nilly. And I do that all the time, so my goal is to get that mess all organized. Yah, right, maybe if I ever retire I will do it. Anyway, the really good recipe is so simple and really, really nummy. Place some boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the middle of a cake pan. On one end of the pan make a nice pile of potatoes cut into chunks, I used new potatoes. On the other end put in some frozen green beans. Melt a stick of butter and pour over everything, then sprinkle on a packet of dry Ranch dressing mix. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 350 for an hour. It was fantastic! I made this for supper Saturday night and Tateum and Sonny both gave it raves. Sonny said those were the best green beans he ever had. Even Matthew (the baby) ate lots of everything. He is a good eater--my favorite kind of kid. So, this is my new go to recipe for sudden company at meal time. Easy, quick, and stuff I have on hand. Stacey is on vacation this week with her family. They are in South Dakota in the Badlands, Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park. Of course they will take in the Reptile Gardens and Bear Country while there. She and her husband are taking five kids with them (Lord have mercy) three of their own and two cousins. Hopefully the weather cooperates so they can be outside running around and not cooped up in the vehicle or motel room. Yikes, I get the heebie jeebies just thinking about it! This is long, and I really had nothing to say--so better close now and get this paper out. Next week will be the first edition for August already, with the fair and starting to think about back to school. Just would like to congratulate Sandy Schorn again on her retirement and hope she had a great time at her party. Stacey wanted so much to go, but she was under the weather and couldnt make it. She was very disappointed to miss it. All my kids LOVED Mrs. Schorn--there will never be another like her. Peggy

August is Child Support Month

Take a moment this month to thank your Todd County Child Support Worker! Each day the Child Support staff works hard to help families work toward becoming and remaining self-sufficient by assisting parents in establishing a financial partnership on behalf of their mutual children. Each work day morning the Child Support Staff employs every effort to do this work on behalf of children of Todd County. We accept requests for applications for assistance in establishing paternity and collecting support from either parent or an adult with legal custody of a child. We serve children whose families are not on any type of public assistance as well as children whose families are on public assistance. If child support is owed on behalf of your children, the Child Support Staff does their utmost to locate the parent who should be paying support, obtain a court order for payment of basic support, medical support, child care and payment on any past due, implements income withholding for regular payment, verifies and can act to enroll your children in any insurance the other parent is ordered to provide, and if necessary, commence legal proceedings through the Assistant Todd County Attorney to see that timely payments are made. If you pay support, the Child Support Offices keeps accurate records of payments collected and paid on behalf of your children, provides as much education and assistance as we are able to help you meet your child support obligation or adjust your obligation if the your work or life situation changes. If paternity of your child is not legally established, the Child Support Worker can assist in genetic testing and facilitate the signing of a Recognition of Parentage. The Recognition of Parentage establishes legal paternity. This legal document amends the birth certificate and can be used as a basis for establishing custody and parenting time. The Todd County Child Support workers do their very best to serve the children of Todd county and we heartily thank them for their dedicated service.

Eagle Valley welcomes new superintendent/ high school principal
By Rin Porter At the July 16 meeting, Eagle Valley School Board Chair Sharon Notch welcomed newlyminted Superintendent Barry Johnson, who received his post on July 1, and new high school principal Cindy Roos, who became principal on July 1 after Johnson was hired as superintendent. Roos has been a teacher and part-time administrator at the school for several years. Notch also announced the resignation of board member Rick Nelson. Members voted to accept the resignation with regret. A replacement to fill Nelsons unexpired term will be chosen through a process of public advertising and interviewing of applicants. Supt. Johnson thanked Parkers Prairie Supt. Tom Ames for his work as Interim Superintendent in May and June, and for his continuing assistance as Johnson starts his first superintendent job. During the meeting, updates on the progress of various projects were received. First, the sale of two unneeded school vehicles was completed recently by sealed bid. Second, the facilities committee met to look at budgets, and to revise and update the five-year plan. As part of the plan, the board will try to close most of the Eagle Bend building and arrange to heat only the part that will be used. Next, the option to rent a building owned by the city of Eagle Bend has been abandoned due to the cost of updating the building and getting it ready to use. Fourth, the personnel committee explained its work on determining staff duty days, evaluation plans, paraprofessional assignments, etc., for 2013-2014. The work continues. Supt. Johnson announced that he had so far been unable to hire a math teacher, but the position was being re-advertised, along with several part-time positions that remain unfilled. Next, the board approved contracts for counseling services for 20132014 and for a summer custodian. It approved several coaching and advising positions, but the full list was not ready for approval. Finally, Supt. Johnson explained the need to consolidate the money CDs that the school district has in several banks. Near the end of the meeting, Supt. Johnson asked the board to approve contracts for two teacher candidates he wished to hire. The candidates were chosen and interviewed by a committee of board members and administrators. The board approved a oneyear contract for Lexie King to serve as a kindergarten teacher, and a one-year contract for Katie Peterchek to serve as a first grade teacher. The Eagle Valley School Board will hold a special meeting on July 29 at 7 PM.

ASK A TROOPER
By Sgt. Jesse Grabow of the Minnesota State Patrol Question: I would like to know more about Legionville School Patrol Camp. I know it has been going for a long time, and I wonder about its current status, and if the State Patrol is still involved? Thanks. Answer: There is a lot of information about Legionville School Patrol Training Camp. The Camp is where school patrol students are taught the fundamentals of school patrol and school bus patrol. It is located just north of Brainerd, and it operated by the American Legion, using State Patrol Troopers as instructors. It is believed to be the only school patrol training camp in the world. This summer, it is celebrating 75 years of instruction and is going on right now until the middle of August. It actually started 77 years ago in 1936, but because of World War II, they missed instructing in 1942 & 1943. The old familiar barn is gone. A new one is being constructed and will be completed in time for the 2014 season of instruction. School Patrol training itself was started (informally) back in 1920, when Sister Carmella asked the older boys to help the younger children cross the streets from school in St. Paul. Earle Brown (former Minnesota Governor and former Minnesota Highway Patrol
Chief), formalized the program and got the Highway Patrol (now called Minnesota State Patrol since about 1974) involved with the instruction at the Earle Brown Farm in the Twin Cities. Based on records from American Legion personnel, the training locations also included the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds, Camp Ripley and the present Legionville location north of Brainerd, (southwest of Merrifield). Besides school patrol and school bus patrol training by troopers, other instructors help complete the week with swimming, canoeing, first aid training and many other activities and games. The camp is a very active place. Parents can pay for their kids to go, even though there are also some limited numbers of scholarships available each year through the local schools, State Patrol Troopers Association, local American Legion posts and many other venues. This year, the camp runs from the middle of June, until the Middle of August. Legionville has a web site if you want to know more than what I am writing about: http://www.legionville.org/ If you have any questions concerning traffic related laws or issues in Minnesota send your questions to Trp. A check on the Minnesota drivers and vehicle services website pulled up a picture of a person who looked different than the person who was fishing. I asked him to look at the photo on my computer screen and asked him who that was a picture of, said CO Scott Staples of Carlton. He said it was his brother. Swenson said his application for a fishing license was rejected because he was cited the previous year for fishing with extra lines. Staples had issued that citation. Swenson was taken into custody on Staples warrant for his arrest for failing to pay the previous years fine. While Swenson was booked into the Carlton County Jail, Staples called Swensons brother, Chayse J. Swenson, 20, of Duluth, who said he was aware that his brother had his license. He stated that he did not think it was that big of a deal, Staples said. I informed him that it was not legal to lend another person a game or fish license and that I would be mailing him a citation for that violation. Andrew Swenson was charged with a gross misdemeanor for giving false information to a peace officer, angling without a license, and lending, borrowing or transferring a license. The maximum fine for a gross misdemeanor is $3,000. Angling without a license carries a $50 fine. Lending, borrowing, or transferring a license is a $100 fine. Chayse Swenson was charged with lending, borrowing or transferring a license. He pleaded guilty and paid the fine. Col. Ken Soring, DNR enforcement director, said one of the most common fishing violations is angling without a license. Minnesota statute states anglers

Sharing a fishing license is illegal

A Minnesota man faces multiple charges and fines after he was caught using his brothers fishing license while on the St. Louis River near Knife Falls Dam in Cloquet, May 13, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). His brother was also cited. Andrew T. Swenson, 30, of Cloquet had difficulty answering questions about date of birth, height, weight, and the address listed on the fishing license when asked by a DNR conservation officer (CO).

age 16 or older must have the appropriate license in their possession when fishing. "Well, I dont have one or I just forgot to bring it with me is an excuse that conservation officers wish theyd hear less often than they do, Soring said. He also said its an excuse thats easily corrected. The states electronic licensing system issues licenses and stamps through 1,500 license agent locations statewide. Agents charge an issuing fee for each license and stamp sold. Instant licenses and stamps are also available online at www.dnr.state.mn.us or by telephone at 888-665-4236. An additional convenience fee is added

for sales via the website or telephone. The purchaser is licensed immediately, which is a tremendous feature, Soring said. Then you're on your way to your favorite fishing spot. Anyone witnessing a fish or wildlife violation is encouraged to contact the 24 hour toll-free Turn-In-Poachers (TIP) hotline at 800-652-9093. Cell phone users can dial #TIP.
