CULTURAL CELEBRATION
OUR CONTRIBUTOR SHARES HIS EXPERIENCE OF ATTENDING THE LIVELY 35th ANNUAL BALI ARTS FESTIVAL.

t all began in 1979 when Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra, the Governor of Bali, had the idea to create a vehicle for Balinese artists in order to help them

the exciting opening parade. Out of the many artist groups who participated that day, one of the most anticipated was the Papuan performers, who showcased their traditional dances from eastern Indonesia. However, in the middle of the show the sunny skies slowly turned cloudy and suddenly burst into a downpour. The spectators who had thronged the streets rushed for shelter, but the performers remained in their positions. Their faces looked disappointed but the show had to go on, so they continued dancing in spite of the heavy rain that soaked their costumes. This moment meant so much to them and they were unwilling to give up after all the practice and preparation for this event, which was attended by Indonesias President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

become more widely known. Now in its 35th year, the month-long festival

was held recently from June 15 to July 13 and showcased a wide and entertaining array of dance and art from all reaches of the archipelago.

OPENING PARADE
Thousands of spectators, from local residents to international tourists, gathered in Renon Square to witness

MYSTICAL & SACRED

Some sacred arts and dances usually performed only on major religious holidays were performed and displayed on the stages of the Art Centre, the main location of this annual event. One example was the sacred Joged Bisama, performed by the people of Tabanan in Bali. This joged

is not like the joged with seductive moves that attract men to ngibing, or dance alongside the dancer while making irtatious gestures. This sacred dance is a blend of Joged and Legong dance movements and is only performed at the quarterly ceremonies held for children. During those ceremonies, the child is carried by his or her parents who ngibing whilst cradling the child. As for mystical arts, the Wayang Wong (human shadow puppet) players from Java used masks that require special rituals for wearing or storing. It is not known exactly who rst made these masks that have been passed down for seven generations. Pekandelan in the Batuan village of Gianyar. Also a mask drama, it tells the story of King Jayapangus and why the Barong Landung, the Jero Gede (black) and Jero Luh (white), are paraded around the village before Galungan celebrations to counteract bad luck. Jayapangus was a king who ruled a kingdom in Bali called Balingkang in the 12th century. Another notable performance came from outside Bali, from the Bima Regency in West Nusa

dance companies from abroad. A spectacular performance was presented by students of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA, USA, in collaboration with Prof. DR. I Made Bandem, DR. Suasthi Bandem and the Singapadu Makaradhwaja Group. A combination of dance, drama and multimedia, the performance was about madness. In preparation for the performance the group members even visited a psychiatric hospital in Bangli to deepen their knowledge

for the roles they played. This is a mere fraction of the hundreds of shows and thousands of people involved in this annual festival. The performances presented were not only for the sake of tourism, but also to reassure the older generations who fear for the loss of the sacred art of performance. Some performers have taksu, which is like an aura, or an inner energy that comes when people do certain activities. One dancer might look ordinary, though they can dance as well as the other dancers; however there are those who are able to stun us with their movements as if there were something different, but we cannot pinpoint what makes it special. They have the energy of taksu. Through this festival, it is hoped that dance and art will continue to be attractive to the younger generations, and that those with taksu will continue to amaze people with their movements and showmanship and carry the torch of Indonesian arts well into the future. But after making it through so many trials and tribulations, she was ofcially able to open her own namesake luxury footwear label in 2008. Four years later he expanded into womenswear, however it was not until 2000 that he created his signature Pita Dress. NILUH DJELANTIK
It all started from love. I have always loved shoes, especially high heels. But never in my life did I expect to have my own label, Niluh Djelantik explained when I caught up with her at her agship store on Jalan Petitenget. Angel Jackson are quite intriguing. Widely recognized for their stylish designs that have a dont mess with me attitude, it is no wonder their bags have become such a hit amongst international celebrities and fashion elites such as Lady Gaga and Kate Moss. What I found interesting was the fact that since the brand was established in 2006, they have always manufactured their designs right here in the island of the gods. We decided to do production here because we found most of our materials here, we believe in fair trade, and its all the more reason to keep visiting this paradise, Millie cheerfully explained to me. I actually live here full time now, and so will Katie starting next week. Even though I was only able to meet half of the team behind this brand, from Millies lighthearted attitude I could see how Angel Jackson has managed to become the exciting brand that it is today.

ULUWATU LACE
Starting as a hawker on Kuta Beach and then slowly building her enterprise into what it is now, Ni Made Jatis story is utterly inspiring. The lady behind Uluwatu Lace truly epitomizes the self-made woman. After 35 years in business, her 13 boutiques across the island and 300 loyal employees working at their factory in the Tabanan area are testaments to the ourishing success of Uluwatu Handmade Balinese Lace. When asked what initially inspired her to create such beautiful laces, she answered, When I was younger I used to spend time around Uluwatu area. The wave breaks, the natural beauty and the amazing carvings on the temple have always inspired me. Hence I used the name for the brand. She also added, In some ways my designs are an ode of appreciation to the beauty of Uluwatu. The brand produces some of the most beautiful resort wear. This homey and airy Balineseowned eatery serves Mexican delights using only fresh ingredients, some of which come straight from the owners farm in the Bedugul area. TACO CASA ALSO CATERS TO THOSE LOOKING FOR PRE-PARTY DRINKS. SIP ON THEIR DEVILISHLY SWEET STRAWBERRY MARGARITA OR TRY THEIR INTRIGUING TAMARIND MARGARITA.
I recommend you try Taco Casas scrumptious 8-layered burrito. Relish on generous portions of cilantro-lime rice, pinto beans, cheddar cheese, shredded romaine lettuce, pico de gallo salsa, guacamole and sour cream, all tightly wrapped in a fresh and soft our tortilla. As you bite into it, both the avors and the texture from the crunchy vegetables and the soft beans and guacamole brilliantly fuse together in your mouth to wow your taste buds. If you are up for tacos, then place an order for their Crispy Tacos. Three corn taco shells come lled with grilled marinated meat of your choice chicken, beef or shrimp and heaps of veggies, cheddar cheese and pico de gallo salsa, served with black beans and sour cream. Every bite is an explosion of crunchy goodness. Pair your Crispy Tacos with one of Taco Casas freshly squeezed lime drinks such as the LOMG (lemon, orange, mint and ginger), a refreshing concoction that is perfect to cool you down after hours of being in the sun or shopping in the Oberoi area. DINE&DELIGHTS

SWEET AS TABOO (AND SAVORY TOO!)

WE CAME IN SEARCH OF BREAD AND PASTRIES, BUT WHAT WE DISCOVERED WAS A SURPRISING RANGE OF EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS AT MONSIEUR SPOON.

he word on the street was that the cute little patisserie Monsieur Spoon had just launched the real deal authentic French

millefeuilles How could anyone possibly resist these luscious French delights? Prior to visiting the patisserie, we had three different people rave to us about the lemon meringue. Just looking at the tartlet, it already had our hearts (those uffy drops of meringue topping are too cute!). Biting in, we found that it

was refreshing and had just the right amount of lemon tartness. As for the chocolate ganache and strawberry tartlets, you also cant go wrong with these, as all three avors boast deliciously crispy crusts. Monsieur Spoons delicate macaroons come in an assortment of avors, from caf latte to lemon to salted caramel. We sampled the pistachio, passion fruit-chocolate and rose, which were all excellent. We loved the fact that their macaroons are made with only natural colors and avors. And if youve never tasted a millefeuille, we recommend you do so straight away. Perfectly aky layers of caramelized puff pastry are combined with generous amounts of cream its a multilayered dream come true! Choose from vanilla, pistachio or hazelnut. The list of sweet treats goes on and on. For example, theres the ginger lava cake for a decadent chocolate experience and the mango lime mousse for a light and fresh option. Just stopping in for a snack on the go? We recommend the buttery raisin swirl viennoiserie. Another hot selling item is Monsieur Spoons croissants. When we visited, they had just sold their 50,000th croissant. It seems that the hotels and villas in Bali just cant get enough. This is truly remarkable, considering they only started offering their croissants to businesses in December 2012. Monsieur Spoons light and aky croissants are made with authentic French butter from Normandy, France.

NEW OFFERINGS
Speaking of butter, Ra shared the news with us that Monsieur Spoon will be coming out with its very own brand of butter, available for purchase! Aside from their plain butter you can also choose Red (made with Balinese red pepper), Dark (with long pepper from the Bali forests) and Green (lime & Fleur de Sel). As for fresh bread to go with your homemade butter, traditional baguettes arent the only option available. There are also tourtes (round loaves of bread, available in two sizes), paillasse (special sourdough bread with a hard crust), ciabatta, focaccia and bagels, among others. What better way to take advantage of all this great bread than by offering yet another new menu item: sandwiches! Yes you heard us correctly Monsieur Spoon is launching gourmet sandwiches. With delicious options such as the Sicilian Focaccia, New York Bagel with Salmon, Chicken Ciabatta and French Jambon Baguette, get ready to make even more visits to Monsieur Spoon. To make sure everyone gets their sandwich x, Ra told us that plans are in the works to open Monsieur Spoon Express locations, which will be tiny 5 to 10 meter square kiosks where you can stop by to grab your sandwich and be on your way. Deliveries will also be possible from these hot spots as long as you are in the Seminyak, Canggu and Kerobokan areas. If that isnt enough to get you excited, theres still one more new offering, and thats coffee! Monsieur Spoon will be working with the good folks at Kopi Kultur to bring you delicious local coffee brews to go along with your macaroons or your slice of dark chocolate ganache tart. Chef Ra is passionate about bringing life back to food and we are grateful to have him here in Bali. His scrumptious and charming treats are a welcome addition to Balis culinary landscape, and we cant wait to see how things progress with Monsieur Spoon Express.

SPA TREATMENTS AND CHOCOLATE: TWO OF THE FINEST FEMALE PICK-ME-UPS. DOES IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS?

ts a well-worn clich but true: ladies utterly adore chocolate, our naughty but nice indulgence. It is especially good when we need cheering-up, comfort food, or a treat to reward ourselves with. But now I discover that gorgeously delicious chocolate is actually good for you too, and one way of

maximizing its benets is in a spa treatment that is, youre literally covered in the stuff.

GUILT-FREE PLEASURES
At the Theta Spa, a divine, independently owned boutique oasis operating within the Ramada Bintang Bali Resort, the aptly named Chocolate Indulgence (US$138++) is their signature treatment. A funky Asian contemporary spa resting alongside the quieter sands and lagoon-like seas of Tuban Beach, the refreshingly informal Theta takes an all-natural holistic approach and focuses on tradition-inspired Indonesian rituals, therapies and ancient massage techniques. The ingredients are fresh and natural organic herbs, seasonal produce and the purest certied essential oils are the order of the day, as well as chocolate derived from Indonesian cacao beans, Sumatran coffee, live Borneo honey and Balinese coconut. If you are having any guilt-trips regarding this Chocolate Indulgence, forget it. Nutrient-rich chocolate apparently has ve times more antioxidants than tea and hunts down oxygen free-radicals that cause wrinkles. Its been used as

a potent natural aphrodisiac since ancient Aztec times, is regarded as an anti-depressant, and releases feelgood endorphins. The cocoa butter in chocolate nourishes and makes skin velvety-satiny smooth, and this chocolate treatment even has slimming properties!

Next, a soothing Theta Body Massage: strong massage movements are a specialty here and whether you opt for the traditional Balinese or the deep tissue, both make stresses, strains and tensions simply melt away. We then come down to the nitty-gritty, a gentle exfoliating scrub of chocolate, almond and oatmeal with nutrient-rich almonds bufng and treating sensitive skin. Then the Chocolate Honey Cocoon commences, a thick gooey concoction spread over the skin that smells like a sinfully rich Death by Chocolate pudding. It literally

looks good enough to eat. This pure unadulterated chocolate is blended with honey and has no chemicals or additives, so it is entirely edible. If it wasnt for the banana leaf wrap, bound tropical-style around my upper torso (making me resemble a tasty Balinese treat), I could well have turned cannibal on myself. In fact, lying there for several minutes while the chocolate soothed and the honey sealed in the goodness, the aroma of the chocolate almost tormented me. Luckily for me my Soother therapeutically massaged my scalp to keep me sane. After washing it all away in the shower, this seriously indulgent treatment is rounded off with a

chilled fruit juice enjoyed in a mega relaxing Ultimate Flower Bath of around twenty minutes. Be sure, like me, to reserve Thetas triplebed VIP Suite on the rst oor, all glass-encased with direct Indian Ocean views. As you sink back in the silky waters lled with ylangylang, jasmine, orange, lemon, bergamot oil and milk (hey, if its good enough for Queen Cleopatra, its good enough for me) topped with a smattering of blood-red rose petals, you can watch the sunset over lovely Tuban Beach, as at this time of day the suite is drenched with the days nal rays of golden sunshine. This is a treatment so luscious, it borders on the wicked.

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING

As I sip my post-treatment herbal drink in the sunny reception lounge, I notice that my usually impossibly dry skin is left velvety smooth, supple, well-hydrated and glowing with youthfulness. So not only is chocolate naughty but nice, its also highly benecial for health and beauty. Ladies, you can have your cake and eat it too.

REST&RELAXATION

U PAASHA SEMINYAK IS LOCATED RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THE ACTION, AND THE NEW HOTEL ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE BREAKFAST IN BED, ANY TIME YOU WANT. NEED WE SAY MORE?

ITS ALL ABOUT U

Due to its location, I imagined

GUESTS ARE ABLE TO ENJOY THEIR ROOM FOR A FULL 24 HOURS FROM THE TIME THEY CHECK IN, REGARDLESS OF HOW LATE THEIR CHECK IN TIME WAS.

U Paasha would be the perfect place to stay for a couple traveling with another couple or friends traveling as a group. To test out my theory, I requested to stay in connecting rooms and brought some friends along. One room came with a king bed while the other had twin beds. The rooms were adjoined through a door in the front hallway, allowing for privacy. With tons of space and ample seating in both rooms, it was incredibly easy for us to get together to chit-chat, hang out and

fondly recall the events of the day (and night) before retreating back to our individual rooms to tuck in for the night. The room dcor at U Paasha is simple, bordering on minimalistic. Although the oors are concrete and the walls are devoid of any art, the room still manages to have personality. Small hexagons are stamped into the walls giving the room a honeycomb texture and the bathroom mirrors are an enlarged version of the same shape. It actually feels more like a loft apartment than

a hotel suite, with its sliding door mirror closet, comfy wicker lounger decorated with throw pillows, and cozy day bed perched in the corner.

BREAKFAST IN BED
The bright and breezy dining area located just off the main lobby called the Alcove is a great option for breakfast, but if you cant be bothered to drag yourself out of bed, at U Paasha all you have to do is reach for the phone and order in-room breakfast. Imagine how amazing this option would feel after a late night out on the town. You also dont have to have your breakfast at a predetermined time. As U Paasha puts it, you can have your breakfast wherever and whenever you choose. We took advantage of this, waking up early but purposely dawdling. After watching some TV

and taking our time getting dressed, it was already after 10 a.m. by the time we decided to call for breakfast. As promised, the operator cheerfully took our orders. I was asked to choose between American Breakfast and Chinese Breakfast and to my surprise my American breakfast was plentiful and delicious, the highlights being the buttery croissants and the piping hot omelet and sausages.

items, teas, iPod music and DVDs. You can choose your amenities through the website when making your online reservation or simply inform the host upon arrival. On top of that, the hotel applies a 24 hour room concept, meaning guests are able to enjoy their room for a full 24 hours from the time they check in, regardless of how late their check in time was. No more having to scramble in the morning to get a few laps in the pool before packing up your belongings to check out by 11 a.m.!

SWIM, BIKE, PLAY

Dont miss out on U Paashas large rooftop pool, which has day beds and boasts great views of Seminyak. The pool bar offers an eclectic mix of boosters, energizers, fresh fruit quenchers, signature daiquiris and margaritas, premium international beers and canaps for those with the munchies. U Paasha also provides bikes and helmets for guests who want to try riding instead of walking around Seminyak. I recommend you turn right from the hotel and

grew weary of tackling the trafc in Kuta. The easiest way to get around Bali is by motorbike. Its cheap, fast, and you can weave through trafc and leave gridlock in the dust. The downside is that theyre dangerous. Some days Ive seen several accidents in the span of just two hours, and a handful of my colleagues wear the battle wounds of their experiences eating pavement. On top of that, having the rain in your eyes and getting soaked on your way home from work isnt a fun way to end your day now is it? As for having a car, the challenges include navigating the narrow roads and the very limited options for parking. For example, if you wanted to go shopping on Kayu Aya Street, there arent many places you could park your car aside from Seminyak Square. And lets not forget that if you collide with a motorbike, you will be the one to blame. It doesnt matter that the rogue motorist

is not wearing a helmet and was talking on his cell phone whilst distracted by some roadside sign. It will still be your fault. Some might say the answer to my woes is simply to man up and plunge into Bali trafc without hesitation. This is what I plan to do, but what would you say to tourists who cant do the same? What if they are too old to be aggressive in Balis trafc circus, or have several young children in tow? Renting a car with a driver isnt cost efcient if youre planning to stay just in the Kuta and Seminyak areas. It would make a bit more sense if you were with a group, but not if youre exploring on your own. Must tourists rely on the taxis, whose drivers sometimes negotiate prices instead of turning on the meter? Just the other day I hopped into a cab and the driver demanded Rp. 50,000 even though the distance is only Rp. 13,000 with the meter on. I cant imagine having to argue every time I get into a cab, as my friend from New Zealand had to do when she was visiting. It sure would be nice if there were some cheap and easy way to get around Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Canggu. I recently heard on the radio that 12 full days after the launch of the new Sarbagita bus route to the airport, only ve people had taken advantage of the service. This is a shame, but considering how difcult it is for some people to get to the bus stop to begin with, it doesnt make sense to board the bus. You might as well ride your initial method of transportation all the way to the airport. Though I appreciate the governments initiative to provide more options, I look forward to the day that getting around south Bali is easy and convenient, when we dont have to think twice about going somewhere because were not sure how to go about getting there. With the help of photographer Tim Hain and our friends at Surfer Girl and Roxy, weve compiled images of women and young girls who have the courage to tackle Indonesias waves and love every second of it! Then youll chalk your hands, grab the bar and wait for the cue from the staff to jump. In my experience, stepping off the platform is the hardest part. This really surprised me because I thought getting my legs up onto the bar while I swung would be harder. If youre a good listener and follow the staffs instructions as you swing, youll be able to get the timing right and at the zero gravity point you shouldnt have any trouble hooking your legs onto the bar. All thats left to do is to let go and youll be swinging upside down. What a rush! High Flyer sessions go for 75 minutes and its advisable to book in advance because classes are kept small and ll up quickly. I didnt take

advantage of the full 75 minutes but by the time I was done I was already able to do a backip dismount. The staff assured me that the next time I came I would be able to do a catch, which is a trick where you grab both hands of a swinging staff member as you yourself are swinging, then unhook your legs from the bar and y freely using the momentum of your partner.

High Flyers is the only place in Bali that offers the opportunity to experience swinging and ipping on a circus-style ying trapeze. Located in an open garden area at the Bali Dynasty Resort (just before you reach the pool), youll notice the contraption right away. It is quite tall, with a seven-meter high platform and the rest of the structure even taller than that. Underneath it lies a thick, red and white striped gymnastics mat to cushion your dismount. My rst impression of the city was that it is clean and neat, with bentor scattered everywhere. At rst look this mosque might not seem as old as you think it should be, and this is because a devastating earthquake destroyed the original structure in 1938. With limited time, I decided to head straight to Fort Otanaha and Limboto Lake via Menara Keagungan. Simply put, Menara Keagungan is Gorontalos version of the Eiffel tower. Standing 65 meters high, atop this green and grey ve-story tower you can have a beautiful view of the city.

70

BALI&BEYOND AUGUST 2013

If youre looking for another great view I suggest you go up to Fort Otanaha. The fort, with its simple circular structure that sits on top of one of the hills that surrounds Limboto Lake, holds so much history and mystery. The ofcial story behind this sand and limestone fortress is that it was originally built by a local king named Ilato and a Portuguese sailor in 1522 for reasons that still remain in question, as no cannons or other weaponries were ever found in the structure. One can safely assume that this building is more of a watch tower than a fortress, which actually makes sense as its location is very strategic and offers a good vantage point of the lake below and the surrounding mountains. Walking around this historical ruin you will enjoy a spectacular view accompanied by a cool afternoon breeze and quiet atmosphere. became evident that this part of the trip was to be the best part. We navigated through many oating houses that serve as shermens posts called began, where each man oversees a plot of several hundred square meters of sh cultivation held together by bamboo poles and placed horizontally several centimeters below the surface. Often times our boat had to pass in and out of these plots and our boatman had to raise the propeller out of the water so as to let the boat oat above the bamboo. It made quite a nerve-racking noise, breaking the blissful silence of the lake. Nevertheless, it is worth the trouble as I was amazed by the scenery and the tranquility of it all. Ending this remarkable trip, Qibor took me to one of the begans to savor fresh sh grilled by the local sherman in the warm glow of the afternoon sun. There are still many other things to experience in Gorontalo such as the coastline and the Bogani Nani Wartabone come to an end, I resorted to hoping for another opportunity to return and explore some more.

except for a few music events here and there. Now the large space is open to the public after being magically transformed into a hip new place to dine. Named the Potato Head Garage, this restaurant is the latest addition to

the PTT Family, the group behind the renowned Potato Head Beach Club Bali and Potato Head Restaurant at Pacic Place Jakarta. The Potato Head Garage is just a few miles from the Potato Head Restaurant (both are in the SCBD area), so to distinguish between the two the Garage presents itself as a classic steakhouse while the Pacic Place restaurant highlights their Brasserie.

THAT PTT LOOK

We have no doubt that the Potato Head Garage will be able to repeat the success of its predecessors. As with all of its projects, the PTT Family has introduced breakthrough concepts with the Garages dcor. The owners decided to keep the core of the buildings architecture and

preserve its original condition, so instead of creating a formal dining atmosphere the Potato Head Garage features classic Victorian ttings set against an industrial space. The concrete oors are washed with color and the structures ceiling reaches as high as 25 meters. We were mesmerized by the gorgeous chandeliers that hung overhead from the pyramid-shaped ceiling (try coming here for dinner when the dim light from the chandeliers provides an oh-so-romantic atmosphere). The Garage really showcases the owners penchant for design and

love of travel many of the antique furnishings, rare collectibles and artwork are from their personal collections. Their eclectic taste even makes its way into the details of the wait staffs uniforms, which are inspired by priests attire.

restaurants menu is more than just promising. Pasta lovers will rejoice as the Potato Head Garage serves a delicious Puttanesca Rigatoni with tomato, basil, capers, and extra virgin olive oil. This is the perfect option for vegetarians. As for meat eaters, the Wagyu Ragu Pappardelle Parmesan cheese will surely become a favorite. Dont forget that the concept of the Potato Head Garage is a steakhouse, so the steaks here are not to be missed. The Garage

GARAGE MENU
No matter how good the interior, its the food that makes people come back to restaurants for more. With talented Chef Hikaru Take in the kitchen (previously from the Tapping Shoes Restaurant at the Potato Head Beach Club Bali), this new

with its fresh made pasta and

offers high quality meat like Wagyu from Japan and Blackmore from Australia. We sampled the Strip Loin Black Angus and the Beef from the Wood Fried Grill, which were both delicious. According to the staff, the OP Rib Eye and Roasted Salmon are also great options. They recommend that guests order their steaks medium because its the best way to enjoy the Garages steaks. For dessert we tried the Valrhona Flourless Chocolate Cake, which is made from 90% Valrhona black chocolate, the best chocolate brand in the world. This cake is perfect for those who enjoy a bit more of a bitter taste from their chocolate.

GARAGE DRINKS
Surrounded by white sofas, the long marbled bar is denitely the focal point of the room. There are a lot of drinks to choose from, but the signature drinks at the Garage pay homage to one of the worlds most popular cocktails, the Mojito. Their mixologists have created a ne selection of uniquely crafted Mojitos, combining fresh and local fruits together with fragrant herbs, spices and homemade syrups. Their extensive mojito selection gives you an idea of what the mixology team at Potato Head is best known for artisanal, creative and innovative cocktails with exquisite avor proles. We tried a few of the Mojitos including the PTT Mojito, the Apple & Cinnamon Mojito, the Mango & Rosemary Mojito, the Lychee & Ginger Mojito and the Mini Mojito Shot (all Potato Head Garage SCBD Lot 14 Jalan Jend. Sudirman Kav 52-53, South Jakarta (021) 5797-3330 www.pttgarage.com refreshing and delicious). You can also order wine from the extensive selection that is beautifully aunted on one section of a wall. The Potato Head Garage is open from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on weekdays and until 2 a.m. on weekends. The 2,000 square meter area can accommodate between 250 to 350 diners and has a standing capacity of up to 1,000 people. The PTT team hinted to us that curated music, fashion and art programs are planned for the future. Judging from the Potato Head Pacic Places concert featuring The Radio Dept and PTTs legendary summer parties at Potato Head Beach Club Bali (past performers include Ed Banger, Justice and the band Foster The People), we cant wait to see whats in store. HEALTH&MEDICAL
Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For Bali Belly, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace uids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
