Brief note of activities Agency : Bread for the World, Germany (2008-2012) - ongoing About the organization INSAF is active in over 15 states of India as a forum of NGOs, people's movements and grassroots organisations to garner all progressive forces in society to: resist globalization,combat communalism and defend democracy. INSAF conducted and implemented the following activities. This is in accordance with the organizations objectives and project proposal. In the state units and national level the following activities were carried out. Trainings and workshops Main issue focus Issue of discrimination on Women and marginalized groups , such as Dalits, adivasis, religious minorities Empowerment of these marginalsied groups through facilitating process of their participation in the mainstream such as electoral process and demand their right to benefit schemes meant for them Impact of globalization, religious fundamentalism Claiming democratic rights Secularism and communal harmony PeaceCounts: Training of Trainers on Peace Builders around the World Contextual issues such as Climate Change, Food sovereignity and other emerging issues Participants : The following participants attended the trainings, seminars, workshops, consultations: Members of grassroot NGOs, youth, women groups, dalits and adivasis, other interested Civil society organizations were also invited ( max 50 participants) Interested individuals Publications : For information and awareness building INSAF also published booklets from time to time. These included Leaflets, press statements, documentation of issues related to globalization, communalism and democracy. Other programmes: State Programmes 15 State units organised regular programmes planned by the state committee. Programmes ranged from organising conventions, seminars, workshops, trainings, demonstrations, public contact, etc. Campaigns and Solidarity Actions INSAF regularly provided support to campaigns and solidarity actions like fact-findings, demonstrations, public meetings to various peoples movements and struggles ranging from anti nuclear, anti mining, anti displacement to anti communalism and opposing violations of human rights.
Public convention A national level convention was held 2 times in a year at various places across the country. Over two hundred INSAF members including local NGOs, dalit and adivasi organizations participated in every programmes. The topic of the programmes varied from globalization issues, impact, analysis, issue of fundamentalism- communal violence, initiating peace. Programmes are also conducted on promoting democracy and generating human rights awareness. Organizational programmes National general body A general body of delegates of all INSAF state units, a total of 15 states met every 2 years. They elected a national executive committee for a term of 2 years. Besides election of executive body, the general body also deliberated upon issues and shared their views amongst each other. The National Executive Committee met and discussed issues, both development interventions and organizational matters. Each member shared about their issues and their work. Moreover , the executive body discussed and deliberated upon contextual issues. The executive body then took decision for way forward for programs and implementations. Agencies: SwissAid, Switzerland; HIVOS,Bangalore; Aid-India, USA (2008 - 2012) ongoing These projects centre around promotion of sustainable farm livelihoods including income security for farm households, and scaling up of ecological agriculture in addition to fighting against threats to environmental sustainability, biosafety, farmers rights, and against corporate takeover of Indian agriculture and hazardous agricultural technologies like GMOs, pesticides etc. Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture (ASHA) ASHA is a large, nationwide informal network of more than 400 organizations, drawn from 20 states of India comprising farmers organizations, consumer groups, womens organizations, environmental organizations, individual citizens and experts who are committed to the cause of sustainable and viable farm livelihoods in rural India and thereby, safe, nutritious, diverse and adequate food for all Indians leading towards goals of Kisan Swaraj, i.e. Food, Farmers, Freedom. This was created after a nation-wide bus tour to spread a message of hope and solidarity with farming communities in India called the Kisan Swaraj Yatra, in 2010. INSAF conducted the following ASHA activities, in accordance with the networks overall planning and project proposal, even as the networks Secretariat is hosted by INSAF: Round Tables and Consultations ASHA conducted Round Tables and Consultations at state and national level to generate a debate on farm suicides in India, income security for farmers, on proprietary seed technologies promoted through public private partnerships, on environmental sustainability in agriculture, on green revolution etc. The participants included farmers leaders, 2
Agricultural Experts, Scientists, Bureaucrats and Policy Makers, Civil Society Members, Farmers and Parliamentarians. Capacity Building Workshops ASHA organized various Capacity Building Workshops in different parts of India, which were attended by Farmers and Front-Line NGO Workers for promoting Ecological Agriculture. The various topics covered in the workshops were such as Non-Pestidical Management (NPM), Organic manures, Inter-cropping, Water conservation, System of Root Intensification (SRI), Conservation of Traditional Seeds, etc. Seed Conservation work Revival and conservation of traditional seeds were taken up in chosen locations so that such seed can be multiplied and exchanged amongst farmers. Publications For information and awareness building ASHA also published booklets from time to time. These included leaflets, reports, press statements, newsletters, etc. on issues such as food safety, farmers rights etc. Media Advocacy ASHA organized Press Conferences to raise concerns over issues related to farm suicides, to reach to media, along with sharing results of fact-finding reports etc. Research and Fact Finding Studies ASHA is currently being supported by Association for Indias Development (AID India) towards a research study to develop a composite index on productivity and use the same to measure productivity of organic farms vis--vis equivalent chemical farms. ASHA has also taken up fact finding visits on hybrid maize promotion, green revolution in eastern India, farm suicides etc. and put out reports in the public domain. Coalition for a GM-Free India The Coalition is a broad national network of organizations, scientists, farmer unions and consumer groups and individuals committed to keep the food and farms in India free of Genetically-Modified Organisms (GMOs). INSAF, as part of the Coalition and housing the Secretariat, conducted and implemented the following activities. Round Tables and Consultations Coalition conducted Round Tables and Consultations at state and national level to create an informed debate on the use of GM Technology and its associated risks, especially, with the focus on Bt Cotton and Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) Bill. The participants include Agricultural Experts, Scientists, Bureaucrats and Policy Makers, Civil Society Members, Farmers and Parliamentarians. Publications For information and awareness building Coalition also published booklets from time to time. These included leaflets, reports, press statements, newsletters, critiques of biotech regulatory frameworks etc.
Media Advocacy Coalition organized Press Conferences to raise concerns over issues related to GM to reach to media, along with sharing results of analyses on Bt cotton performance, on GM and food security issues etc.. Awareness generation and Lobbying on Biosafety The Coalition organised activities around generating awareness on biosafety and food safety amongst many stakeholders, including policy makers. Agency: Global Greengrants Fund, USA (2008) The study undertaken in two selected natural resource rich and tribal commumity populated states of Arunachal Pradesh in the north east and Chhattisgarh in central India. Arunachal Pradesh is being flooded with more than 100 mega hydel projects and referred to as the power house of the country. To tap its potential, this remote state needs connectivity, especially that of roads to ferry heavy dam building equipments resulting in geological and environmental impacts, deforestation and influx of outsiders with a severe impact on the culture and identity of the tribal communities. Agencies: Global Greengrants Fund, USA (Oct. 2008/2010), International Accountability Fund, USA (2010) Yazali, once a sleepy village in the valley of Panior and Kaley rivers, is, today a bustling town of 4,000; 12 kms from the district headquarters of Ziro in the Lower Subansiri district and 155 kms from Itanagar, the provincial/State capital of tribal majority Arunachal Pradesh, located in the north eastern corner of India, bordering Myanmar, China and Bhutan. The film demystifies Yazali and its contributions to the Nishi community through extensive interaction with the people of Yazali, depicting their daily life and linkages that the valley forges with their culture, social organization, economy and livelihood. Agency: Global Greengrants Fund, USA (Oct. 2011) Oral history of the struggle around the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) India. Tracing some of the early contributors to the struggle and recording their interviews, transcribing the interviews in 7 different languages and dialects and writing a report. Agency: Grassroots International Fund, USA (2010) Project: Impacts of Water and Energy Privatization and its Alternatives To study, understand and evaluate the privatisation efforts and their impact on the local water resources and on local populations, especially the poor and marginalised sections of the society. The effort was to study and evaluate at least water supply systems of two towns (Dewas and Badwani) to bring out some sort of a comparable picture of both and also to study the water sector reforms processes in selected two states of the country (Gujarat and Rajasthan), including rural, urban and irrigation water suppplies and the reforms that are being implemented in these areas during the last few years.
Agency: Asia Europe Peoples Forum, Finland (2009) Project: AEPF South Asia meetings Coordinating and organising meeting of Indian groups and networking with South Asian groups to create an AEPF South Asian network. To initiate a process to enable the organisisation of a larger forum or conference of AEPF at the South Asia level in the future. Agency: ActionAid, India (2012) Civil Society consultation on Human and developmental rights education and dissemination of experiences of sufferings of common people, mostly the poor in rural India. Programme included lectures by resource personses and film screenings. Agency: NGO Forum on ADB, Philippines (2013) Meeting of NGO Forum on ADB members in India in Kolkata to discuss the impacts of ADB projects and discuss country strategy to provide inputs to the process of planning and developing a long term strategic action plan for the NGO Forum on ADB. Agencies: Siemenpuu Foundation, Finland & American Jewish World Services, USA (2013) Peoples Forum against IFIs in Greater Noida to highlight the negative impacts of IFIs like ADB on people and ecology. Programmes included marches, Seminars and workshops on IFI and development, privatisation, financialisation, climate change and human rights, Film festival with films on culture, development, human rights, etc. and Planning meetings of the Peoples Front Against IFIs. Agency: Orissa Development Action Forum, India (2013) - ongoing The grant is for implementing the programmes of Forum for collective forms of cooperation (FCFC) in the North Zone. FCFC is a forum of networks for sharing experiences and knowledge of networks and government policies. INSAF is the North Zone convenor. The funds are utilised for planned programmes in the North zone, travel of convenor, office expenses, etc. Agency: International Development Studies, UK (2013) - ongoing Project: Rising Powers in International Development - India Country Study The 'State of Debate' study aims to stimulate a more informed evidenced-based debate within India on it's international developmental engagements, as well as identify key elements within the polity that have shaped the debate to date. This in turn will contribute to the overall goal of the Rising Powers in International Development programme, which is to enhance the developmental impact of the growing engagement of the BRICS with lowincome countries.
