THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE August 1, 2013
By John Halverson
Chuck Platts has seen a lot of changes in his time, and been a part of mak-
ing changes in the city, too.
The Sears store Platts has run in Lake Geneva since 1993 was the rst
Sears store in the country which wasnt tied to the famous Sears, Roebuck
and Co. Catalog.
As mayor of Lake Geneva in 1996-97, Plattss administration oversaw the
construction of the current city hall and the rst beach house.
Actually, his roots in the area go back even further than that.
His parents opened their rst catalog store in Elkhorn in 1964. Those
Sears catalog stores had a desk for ordering from the catalog and, later,
appliances. Platts was involved from the get-go.
The Platts family opened a second store, this time in Lake Geneva, in
1971. After graduating from college in 1974, Platts joined the family business.
The 20-year anniversary signies the time when Sears dropped its legend-
ary catalog and, with it, their catalog stores. So Platts Sears store morphed
into what is now known at a Sears Home Store. There are about 900 now, but
the Lake Geneva store was the rst by a few hours, Platts says.
As for his time as mayor, Platts says we got a lot done.
Sometimes we were controversial, but when you do a lot it tends to make
people nervous, he said.
Platts recalled how someone said hed never win re-election if he kept on
being so active. Platts just laughed. His whole idea was to get in and get things
done without worrying about re-election.

I tell people Im glad I did it, but wouldnt do it again, Platts said with a laugh. We got
things done.
Platts says the most rewarding aspects to running the store for so many years is how
its tied him to his customers.
Ive been here for 40 years, he said. I now deliver appliances to grandkids of custom-
ers we had at the catalogue stores.
Platts also stressed how the personal service you get in a locally-owned store is an at-
tribute the new on-line world cant match.

ts best known as Stone Manor, but the massive Italianate limestone structure that dominates
the shoreline west of downtown Lake Geneva was originally named Younglands.
Its storied legacy began when Otto Young, a German immigrant, took his modest savings
and began a New York costume jewelry business. By 1871, the year of the Chicago Fire, he had moved
to the city and set aside enough money to work on a new business plan: purchasing real estate. In the
wake of the Fire, he took advantage of the plummeting prices of property in the city and eventually built
up his holdings to include much of what is todays Loop.
The investments made him rich so rich, in fact, that when he decided to purchase a Geneva Lake
shoreline lot and build a summer home, he had a little wiggle room in his budget. Some historians put
the original estimate for Younglands at $15,000. It was a great deal of money in 1899, when the plans

for Youngland were drawn up but when all was
said and done, Youngs summer residence would
cost somewhere in between one and two million
dollars.
What made Youngs bill so high? Well, rst of
all the certainty that he could afford it. His fortune
was estimated at about $25 million at the turn of
the century. Second, Young was determined to pay
attention to every detail of the home. The plans
included 14-karat gold plated and sterling silver
xtures, Tennessee marble interior walls, hand-
laid walnut and mahogany parquet ooring and oil
paintings on the 12-foot ceilings.
Younglands contains seven levels, including
two basements, four stories and a rooftop terrace.
The footprint of the building is about 175 feet by
70 feet, with a veranda that stretches 250 feet.
The mansions breathtaking main oor includes
a grand staircase carved from mahogany, a ball-
room with crystal chandeliers and a pink marble
replace, a dining room with hand-carved furni-
ture, a parlor, music room, game room and huge
kitchen and butlers pantry.
The second and third oors were dedicated to
bedroom suites, and the fourth level was for recre-
ation, including a gym and miniature golf course.
The roof contained a garden (and now it also has
a pool).
In all, there was about 50,000 square feet of
living space, all designed for Young and his family
to enjoy during the summer. But Young loved the
home so much that he spent much of the fall and
spring there, too.

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE August 1, 2013
Unfortunately, he only got to enjoy the com-
pleted Younglands for a few years he died there
in December 1906.
The home and the rest of his holdings were
left to his children, via a meticulously-crafted will.
The Aug. 6, 1950 Milwaukee Sentinel details the
bequest, which Young had laid out from children to
grandchildren to great-grandchildren. He had long
been concerned with his familys affairs, the Senti-
nel claimed, and wanted a large brood of grandchil-
dren to help carry on the family name.
He offered his oldest daughter Marie, a sum
of $1 million for every child she had and Marie
had ve in short order. Million Dollar Babies, the
press nicknamed the lucky progeny. (Those rst
ve were were all girls and Young, hoping for at
least one grandson, told another daughter, Stella,
that he expected boys from her. Eventually there
were two grandsons.)
After Youngs death, Younglands remained in
the family until 1939. One of his granddaughters
handed the mansion and eight acres of the estate
over to the Episcopal Church, which opened a girls
school on the property. After a few years, it folded
and the manors future was uncertain.
In the 1960s, the county seized it for back taxes
and it was sold at sheriffs auction for $75,000.
From there, a developer opened a short-lived luxury
restaurant on the main level, and then the building

was used as a Christmas Tree Museum.
In the early 1990s, a developer purchased
Stone Manor and after a massive two-year resto-
ration project, turned the living space into condo-
miniums. Much of the original detail was repaired
and restored, including the marble walls and art
on the ceilings. The rooftop garden had been over-
grown to the point where tree roots were invading
the ceiling. More than 1,400 feet of plaster mold-
ing was restored. The exterior had to be cleaned
and repaired.
Today, the property exudes the same dignity
that Young had expected from Younglands. Its vis-
ibility from across the water often brings the curi-
ous to the western shorepath entrance in downtown
Lake Geneva. Its a short walk past other historic
properties to reach the massive structure, which
is perched on one of the higher points of this side
of the shore. Visitors can also view the estate from

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE August 1, 2013
Oftentimes, buying a
home opens up a bottom-
less pit of opportunities for
projects and improvements.
While some homeowners
engage in different repairs
and x-ups out of necessity,
many others like to freshen-
up their spaces out of per-
sonal preference instead
of need. But even the most
well-intentioned projects
can be waylaid if budgets
are tight.
What many homeown-
ers may not realize is that
there are many ways to
make updates and changes
to a home that do not re-
quire a major overhaul or a
large price tag. The follow-
ing are seven projects that
wont break the bank.
Move around furniture.
You may be able to change
the look of a room without
spending any money. Inte-
rior designers know how to
arrange furniture for maxi-
mum appeal, but the aver-
age homeowner can do it,
too. Find a focal point in the
room and angle the furni-
ture toward it. Dont make
the focal point the televi-
sion, however. Try changing
the placement of chairs and
sofas. Simply moving a cu-
rio cabinet from one corner
to another may also make a
difference.
Add lighting. Lighting at
different levels in the room
can create a vibrant impact.
Many homeowners mistak-
enly put in a couple of table
lamps and think that will be
adequate. However, prop-
erly illuminating a room
means varying the lighting
to create different moods at
different times. Plus, more
light can make a room feel
more welcoming.
Add new pillows or
drapes. Changing a few as-
pects of a room can give it
an entirely new look. If you
want to add a splash of color
but dont know what to do,
think about incorporating
some new throw pillows or
change the curtains. An ac-
cessory here and there in a
bright color also can incor-
porate a new hue without it
being overwhelming.
Change knobs or small
accents. Give a room a new
look by focusing on the small
details. Switch out cabinet
knobs for something updat-
ed and modern. Take inven-
tory of wall outlets and light
switches and think about se-
lecting new ones that coordi-
nate with your home decor.
Use plants. Empty cor-
ners or spots youre not
certain how to ll may ben-
et from a plant. Plants are
inexpensive ways to add
instant color and visual ap-
peal to a room. Plus, having
live plants can help improve
indoor air by ltering out
contaminants. A home with
plants also feels more cozy.
Hang new wall art. It
may be time to look at your
photos and artwork and
make a few adjustments.
Finding new prints to hang
could instantly change a
rooms ambience. And you
neednt spend a lot of money
on professional photogra-
phy, either. Grab your cam-
era and take a few close-up
shots of owers or take in a
landscape scenery. Many of
todays home printers can
produce professional-qual-
ity prints in minutes.
Try a new coat of paint.
After youve exhausted oth-
er avenues, choosing a new
paint color may be the new
look you desire. Painting is
one of the least expensive
yet most dramatic methods
of changing a homes inte-
rior.
