Iracore developed a lining material specifically designed for the oil sand industry to improve wear resistance over other rubber, urethane, chromium carbide overlay, stainless steel and all other miscellaneous wear materials. The wear material is resistant to petroleum degradation and large particle impingement. The wear material improves performance in fast velocities, while eliminating the cold wall effect of previously tested elastomeric linings when used in the severe environments. The wear material resists degradation from high temperatures (180 F to 200 F). The wear materials surface reduces friction loss, saving pumping costs. The wear materials surface reduces and/or eliminates sandfills. The insulating properties of the material and design reduced heating costs of slurry water.
Iracore developed a welded end system that is used with an elastomeric liner that allows field welding, installation, and rotation of long lengths of pipe. The wear material allows the use of alternative types of pipes (such as thin spiral weld) to provide significant cost savings in steel. Improved pipe joint alignment and eliminated the radial welds.
Iracore provides a piping system that results in overall cost savings to operations and maintenance.

Iracoupling permits lined pipelines to be welded, eliminating the requirement for heavy expensive bolted or mechanical couplings. Iracoupling halves are shop welded to pipe prior to lining with urethane. Then a special end profile is formed on the urethane lining to enable the end faces of the lining at the joint to be compressed, forming a positive seal to provide a smooth transition across the joint, and therefore eliminating turbulent slurry flow.

Unique Polymer Pump Liners Reduce FGD Scrubber Problems

Industrial Rubber Products - Irathane Systems
With bonus emission allowances for scrubbing exhaust gases, coal-fired power generation plants equipped with flue gas desulphurization (FGD) scrubbers represent the best cost option for compliance with Phase 1 and 2 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. The removal of sulfur oxides (SO2/SO3) and fly ash from flue gas creates a working environment within a gas scrubbing system that combines the worst ravages of erosion-corrosion, intergranular attack, electrolytic corrosion, severe pitting and scaling with stress-corrosion cracking, crevice corrosion and S02/SO3 attack. When FGD scrubbers were first introduced for exhaust-gas emission control, there was a tendency to specify lower cost materials: Carbon steels coated with vinyl ester resins and other plastics; polyester flake glass linings; chlorobutyl rubber pump liners; and some components made entirely of plastic. With high chloride levels, low pH levels and severe abrasion, too often the end result was poor system performance, excessive maintenance problems, unscheduled outages and expensive retrofit construction. Flaking debris from various coatings and chunks of gypsum scale from recycled wet limestone scrubber slurries, for example, can tear through FGD pumps and peel off the thick rubber tips of pump impellers. factor (low coefficient of friction) enable our products to outwear rubber, basalt, flake glass, epoxy resins, polyethylene's, conventional polyurethanes and unprotected iron and steel. The high failure rate of soft rubber pump liners due to abrasion, impact and wear can also contribute to suction-screen plugging problems which, in turn, create cavitations and additional damage to conventional rubber liners. When suction screens are plugged by gypsum scale, rubber debris or other tramp materials, vacuums are pulled on the FGD pumps. In severe situations, this can quickly lead to addition-al problems by drawing the unsupported rubber liners into the
PUMP LINER FAILURES

Faced with an extremely high failure rate of soft rubber pump liners and no satisfactory alternative materials from the pump manufacturers, a major power company in the southwest installed Irathane liners in its FGD scrubber recycle pumps in 1986. Irathane is a proprietary urethane, originally formulated by Irathane Systems, Hibbing, MN, for the mining and mineral processing industries. This material uniquely combines the toughness of a corrosion-, impact-and wear-resistant polymer with the resilience of soft natural rubber. These engineered properties plus a low C

grooved and torn. With a higher flexural modulus of elasticity, Irathane is inherently stiffer than conventional rubber pump liners. This engineered property plus full metal inserts enable the unique polymer liners to resist deformation under vacuum, thus minimizing unscheduled out-ages even suction screens are plugged. when
In 1986 and 1987, numerous pumps were retrofitted in this southwest power plant with our new bolt-in pump liners. There have been no failures; and several Irathane liners have logged more than 30,000 hours of trouble-free operation. No two FGD scrubbers are the same. The application in the southwest involves the first loop of a double-loop wet limestone scrubber. The recycle rate and design conditions include: Equivalent successes were experienced in this power plant and other power generation facilities with Irathane-lined pipe and agitator propeller linings cast with our proprietary polymers. In addition to long-wearing pump liners, IRE Irathane Systems provides lined piping and fittings (including elbows and tees) for all types of FGD scrubber systems. Our lined pipe, developed in the 1970s to withstand severe abrasion in mining and mineral processing, protects FGD sump and slurry lines as well as the disposal piping for ash and other particulates.
As pump liners, pump impellers, duct liners and lined pipe, our engineered polymers withstand the highly corrosive, abrasive and sulfurous/sulfuric acid working environments of FGD scrubbers.

AN EARLY INSTALLATION
The installation in the southwest, one of the earliest applications for Irathane FGD pump liners, was initiated for three reasons:
The abrasion rate of the soft rubber liners was excessive. Chunks of gypsum scale were peeling off the thick rubber tips of the impellers. Pluggage of suction screens caused cavitation, which accelerated the failure of rubber liners.
The maintenance superintendent for the power plant reports a three-to-one wear-life superiority for Irathane pump liners. "This product and its application are as good as it gets." As a result, only Irathane liners are now used in all of this plant's scrubber recycle pumps.

Irathane launder liner significantly outperform rubber and metal liners with lightweight, easy to install protection. Because of the naturally smooth and slick surface, Irathane linings enhance slurry flow and reduce solids sanding or material build up. These superior quality launder liners are available to fit numerous launder or flume configurations including V-shape, half-round, or square bottom. Custom liners can be designed to meet any specific requirements. To prevent wear on discharge piping, Irathane deadbed and wear sleeves are often used with Irathane launder and chute liners to provide complete long term protection. Cross-Over Pads
These high tensile strength polyurethane pads are used to protect electrical or other cables. ANOTHER PRACTICAL SOLUTION TO A PRODUCTION/PROCESSING PROBLEM BY IRATHANE SYSTEMS:
Running Time of 15 Rod Mills is Quadrupled with Irathane Modular Screens

The throughput of a taconite plant has been maximized by eliminating the need for crane operations and metal fabrication. Project payback was measured in hours.
To maximize the throughput of a large taconite plant in Northeastern Minnesota, Irathane By increasing overall running time and significantly reducing downtime for each 450 tons/hour rod mill, the new quickchange trommel screens allow each rod mill to efficiently process more than 1.8 million tons of taconite without a single screen panel or trommel removal! The interchangeable cast-to-shape Irathane screens incorporate an integral helix which carries rod chips away from the screened ore to trash bins. Broken rods must be swept through the trommel as quickly as possible to keep them from tearing up the screens. reduced significantly because the new interchangeable screen modules are formulated to combine the unique properties of a tough polymer that incorporates a high slip surface with the resilience of a soft natural rubber. These engineered properties enable the modular screens to endure feed surges, oversize material and rod chips which contribute to the failure of conventional punch-plate screens. Since the helix is an integral part of each curved screen, individual modules may be replaced without removing the entire trommel. Each quarter, three-quarter and fullscreen segment is cast from the same set of molds, thus assuring proper line-up of the integral helix. The lightweight modular screens are held in place with reusable injection-molded polyurethane pins and sleeves. This allows the

These easily installed, interchangeable screens have increased the running time of each rod mill from 1100 hours to more than 4100 hours, while eliminating many hours of downtime previously consumed for trommel removals and screen replacements.

inter-changeable modules to be replaced without removing the trommels. No crane lifts, no "trommel transport" to fabrication shops, and no special tools are required. Only a hammer and screwdriver are needed. Before the rugged modular screens were installed, it was necessary to remove the canopy of a trommel by using an over-head crane. Then, after the bolts were burned off, the entire trommel was removed and taken to a metal fabrication shop for labor-intensive replacement of worn or damaged screens. Those operations have now been eliminated. With inherently superior strength, the new Irathane screens require less "lost area" for module support, thus permitting maximum use of each curved panel for ore screening. A stronger panel frame prevents dishing and distortion; and the inherent elasticity of the modular screens allowed a special ore-path design with a selfcleaning, tapered aperture to eliminate or minimize screen plugging or blinding. was measured in hours, instead of days, weeks, months or years. Project engineer for Irathane Systems, headquartered in Hibbing, MN, states; "This type of innovative modular screen design will offer similar advantages for ore processing with ball mills, pebble mills, semiautogenous and fullyautogenous mills." Payback on Investment was Measured in Hours

In addition to increasing running time and reducing repair costs, the interchangeable screen modules offer several other major advantages. They resist sliding friction, abrasion and corrosion from the taconite ore; dampen impact energy to reduce noise levels; and protect the full surface of the trommel frames to provide an optimum return on an investment by boosting the plant's daily throughput and significantly reducing operational expenses. The payback for this investment, which included the design and fabrication of new metal trommels,
