View: Main Organs of the UN and Its Power By: LONG KimKhorn, 61283, PUC, MA. IRs, Cambodia July 24, 2013 The United Nations is the upgraded inter-governmental organization from the League of Nations and established after World War II in 1945 at Sanfrancisco, United States of America. The UN is the international community of the world. There are six organs of the UN and sixteen agencies. Firstly, General Assembly is the inter-governmental conference of the world participated by the head of states/ head of governments. General Assemblys power is to: admitting state to UN membership, adopt resolution and recommendation for international disputes, appoint chief of International Court of Justice (ICJ), appoint General Secretary for the secretariat of the UN by the recommendation of Security Council, elect non-permanent member state into Security Council of the United Nations. Secondly, Security Council is peacekeeping body that has peacekeeping forces contributed by the UN Member States. In article 24, SC has role to maintain international peace and security. In chapter 6 of the UN charter, Security Council is a body to adopt resolution and recommendation for international disputes between state and state. In chapter 7 of the UN charter, security council adopt economic sanction and provide military intervention into any state by the request of the state due to failing to stop the spread of the mass killing including severe human rights violation or by the approval of the General Assembly in case - failed state that all functionally governmental institutions dont work anymore. Thirdly, economic and social council (ECOSOC) is the third important organ of the UN to deal with international trade laws/ procedures/ regulations for international trading to protect the principles of free market economy through the IMF and World Bank etc. Fourthly, Secretariat is day-to-day operational body with 7500 staffs around the world to manage daily administrative work and the focal point of communication and help others organs to function smoothly. Fifthly, Trusteeship body is the council to provide legitimacy and legacy of the

overall decision making of the UN including finance affairs. Sixthly, International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the court to trail international civil disputes between state and state for example, case of border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand in 1962 and renewed case in 2008. ICJ is different from the International Criminal Court (ICC), which trail only the war crime, crime against humanity and genocide. -END-
