T A C L O B A N CITYThe Commission on Elections (Comelec) here in the region expects political rivalries in the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections to be more intense and personal. Lawyer Jose Nick Mendros, Comelec-8 regional director, said compared to the national and local elections, the rivalries in the barangay elections are more personal since opponents are usually neighbors and even relatives. In anticipation of a more intense situation, we have started meeting with the law enforcement agencies to improve our security preparations, Mendros said. If we are to base the election-related incidents in the past two barangay elections, Eastern Visayas has recorded several of them. We cannot anticipate if we will have more or less election-related violence, but the most important things is to maintain the coordination forged in the previous elections to page 2

Focus on family planning

xperts forecast the Philippine population will hit around 150 million by 2015. How can we possibly feed and clothe all these people? Where will they all live? The best way to manage this explosive and unsustainable growth is to support voluntary family planning the ability of women to time and space their pregnancies. Unlike abortion, this should not be a controversial issue. It is a proven way to give women more choice in childbearing, and it inevitably leads to lower fertility rates. Yet the political support and funding for family planning in the developing world such as the Philippines are still lacking. Filipino women and couples have had to

count solely on prayer and luck for family planning. Some couples who desired children were not able to have them while others who desired fewer children had trouble accomplishing this goal. Until the late 20th century, the only way to prevent or space out pregnancies was abstinence but there are many more family planning options in modern times. To raise awareness on the importance of the attainment of a better quality of life for mothers, fathers, and the family as a whole, Family Planning Month is celebrated in the month of August annually. A miracle In Philippine Region VIII

Believers in God and God-lovers may want to look back at shattering events in year 2012, at least in Region VIII (Waray Region or Eastern Visayas) in the Philippines, beginning this Sunday, and onwards, and find out for themselves whether in relation to those occurrences theres any meaning to where and what they and other people are right at this very moment. Of course, very, very few of them, particularly those who never believe in the divine or spiritual state of things that come upon the lives of men and women every day and night may not care, as they have not cared for the past 334 days, unless something else shakes them suddenly. The former, though, can lead the latter, no matter how gradually. Eventually, as days pass into weeks, weeks into months, months into years, and then to lose hope during frustrating moments. These, even without being biblical. For, true it is that, initially, these could just evolve as interpretations of human thoughts, which philosophy regard as segments of a developing faith, yet they can mean more and endlessly to those who savour those thoughtful interpretations. Come August 31, fewer may remember with or without being prompted that a year ago, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake scared at past 8 in the evening most in Samar-Leyte-Biliran islands in the Philippines. Some felt the underground movement pushed them up, others said they were jolted left and right, while most noticed how buildings, other structures and trees swayed, or heard accompanying short explosions apart from thuds of tumto page 6

decades, the expected attitude and behavior will be felt, and even manifested in certain ways. That goes for miracles. In the strictest sense of the word, as defined and professed by the Roman Catholic Church, great beneficial changes in lives of men and women, for which explanations are inscrutable and unfound through years of investigations, are attributed to God or to some departed saintly persons. In the liberal

sense of the word, some related changes are considered, even by ordinary persons who experience them, as miraculous, or things to be greatly thankful about and things that can chart a new destiny for them, and then be very proud about, to tell to others, so that the latter can realize, little by little, that Someone does care when human mind and power alone cannot access this sometimes evasive state of life that is called salvation, and not

Simple vs. complicated

IN the heat and frenzy of our modern life, where rapidity seems to be the main rule, disregarding the concern of whether we are in the right course or not, we need to pause if only to be able to distinguish between what is to be simple and what is to be complicated. The line has been blurred and all but deleted, and many of us do not care anymore whether simplicity still holds some value to us or whether being complicated holds no danger at all to us. We need to resurface the original and undeniable value of simplicity, highlighting why it should be pursued, developed and defended, especially these days when many complicating elements practically glut our existence in all levels. Simplicity, which is not equivalent at all to being a simpleton or being nave, is an indispensable quality in our life for it conforms us to what is proper to our nature and condition, makes us see things very objectively and extensively, and enables us to go through the gyrations of life without losing our focus on our proper and ultimate end. Its a result of a vital union of God, our Creator and Father, who is in fact absolutely simple in essence and power even if he has to contend with the potentially infinite twists and turns that our freedom can take. Its a simplicity that is not rigid at all, but is all flexible, and ever adjusting and anticipating while respecting the way things in general are. In other words, its a simplicity that can take on anything, very dynamic and versatile, and would even know how to derive good from evil.

Merely three days ago, August 1, in the social media page of Yahoo! News, an article submitted by GMA News Online entitled Admin senators implicated in pork barrel mess reported Ben Luy implicated Senators Aquilino Koko Pimentel III, Antonio Trillanes, and Loren Legarda. The next day, I opened the Internet, there was a commentary When guilty, make the mess, messier written by Ellen Tordesillas of The Inbox published by Yahoo! News. The commentary Dirty tricks operators have joined the Jenny Napoles pork barrel scam controversy to make the mess messier. The immediate objective is clearly to distract attention from Napoles and members of her family and cause confusion. Sad to say some members of media fell into the trap. What a mess? The recent Thursday, I was able to pick up the item submitted by GMA News Online, and used it in my Fridays column. In the article Whistleblower exposes more PDAF anomalies, I commented: The direction of the expos may end up with people losing their trust and confidence with the lawmakers. The interweaving of those allegedly involved in the PDAF (Priority Development Assistance Funds), such as, close connection, relationship, or involvement will inevitably come to the day of reckoning that the government system is weak. However, next day, Friday, I read the commentary of Tordesillas. She wrote: By noontime yesterday, the story could not be found online. When one clicks at the title, a

notice appeared that Page requested cannot be found. It may have been removed, renamed or is temporarily unavailable. It is true when I tried to recheck the article at noon time, it is no longer online. The same notice as Tordesillas wrote appeared in the screen. So, to verify if the news item was really deleted I recheck it on Friday noon. I was amazed to see it returned with the information (Updated 3:02 a.m.).It is not all a mess, but only whos who is spreading the truth, between Tordesillas and GMA News Online? I tried to comment in the Editors Note of both articles, but it seems the weak signal of Globe Broadband could not settle the page. Anyway, for others it may seem nothing to comment on, but, the fact that the two articles are saying different things, would it not be best we talk about it? Had I able to write my comment I could have written it this way. For the commentary of Tordesillas I will ask: Which among your commentary and the news written by GMA News Online is the truth? and for the GMA News Online I write: Tordesillas

mission on Population are in the forefront of efforts to increase the amount of information and access people have to resources related to family planning methods all over the islands. Particular focus is on low-income communities.

The estimated Philippine population had risen to more than 98 million Filipinos as of July, 2012, and the country now ranks as the twelfth most populated country in the world. Individuals must consider family planning as a serious matter and be responsible for their choices. Babies

should be conceived by choice and not by chance. Couples must be prepared financially and emotionally before a child is born. Partners should decide the right timing and spacing to conceive a child to ensure that the child is raised in a healthy manner with a suitable environment.

Its very much compatible with prudence, patience and hope, and goes all the way to live out the demands of charity, since it can prefer to suffer for any duration of time if only to gain the eternal goal of life everlasting with God who is our ultimate end. The opposite of simplicity is to be complicated, which happens whenever we detach ourselves from God and prefer to be guided by our own estimation of thingsbe it through common sense, our sciences and arts, our social, economic or political consensus. In that condition, we are actually making our own world, our own reality, our own set of truths and untruths that actually have no real basis. Its self-interest that is served rather than the common good. Complicated situations are incapable of serving the good of all. Yes, for a time, we may enjoy certain perks and advantages, but these will never last long, and in time, the fantasy will just collapse. The perks and advantages, the convenience and comfort that complicated situations give us are notoriously selfish in character, enjoyed at the expense of the necessary good of others. If this predicament persists without being corrected, then we would be continually undermining the peace and harmony in society and in the world, in general. We would be generating distrust among ourselves, and chaos and collapse in the world would just be a matter of time. We need to be more at-

tentive to our duty to pursue, develop and defend simplicity. We will always know when we start to be and to get complicated, and we should try our best to avoid or fight that predicament right at the first instance when it makes its appearance. We should be sincere with God, with ourselves and with others, because that is how we can build and keep simplicity and avoid complications. For this, we have to be ready to suffer, because in our present condition, we cannot help but encounter great difficulties and trials just to be simple, to be faithful to the truth, and to be with God. We have already been warned about this, and we actually have been given the means to ably face these difficulties, challenges and trials: the doctrine of our faith, the sacraments, the development of virtues, etc. Our sincerity, which is at the heart of our need for simplicity, should be based on our firm belief that we are children of God, who in his ever powerful, wise and merciful providence, is always there for us. We should not be afraid of whatever difficulty or trial we may meet in our pursuit for simplicity. Simplicity is actually the demanding responsibility of facing reality realistically, and leads us to eternity. The complications we make, on the contrary, are expressions of our tendency to escape reality and make our own fantasy that is good only for a while.

bling objects and bumbling waters and watery soils. To most of them, it was the scariest and longest earthquake to have threatened them. Some indeed believed it was already their end, or the end of the world. Not as yet, but. That may remain as is. However, some of them may want to do just two simple things: one, recall what they experienced when that earthquake occurred in the evening of August 31; and two, prayerfully thank God for sparing them from human damage. Or, they can tell their neighbours and friends to join them in a prayer forum in which they can likewise discuss their insights from that life-threatening earthquake. The local media may initiate their own recall and thank-you-God (TYG) broadcasts. Church parishes and religious ministries, by whatever calling, may initiate their own TYG activities, at least to help their followers recognize Gods divine love and care and then revive their faith in God. Local government and school/college/university officials, especially to gauge their readiness in facing future earthquakes, may perhaps organize commemorative activities for unfolding on August 31. Of course, baranganic versions of recollection and thanksgiving activities may be organized. Evening-timed activities may be more dramatic and meaningful. These all need not be expensive. Spiritual

and divine faith is all that is to be invested. Then, the few hours afterwards may be spent for follow-through and follow-up activities, with the end in view that soon this small group of God-thanking individuals will grow into a continually mushrooming community of denizens who must always be thankful to God, at all times, whether or not there are miracles, and whether or not there will be more earthquakes to happen. For anyway, miracles, liberally thought, may proceed from other natural, earth-borne, or earthbound events, according to how every person may appreciate outcomes. True, few regarded, and still regards, those deathless results of that fearful tremor of August 31 read as AUGUST THIRTYONE of year 2012, as results of Gods miracle and a miracle to be thankful for, for as long as these believers breathe God-given life. You can perhaps count their number by your fingers. But, frankly speaking, for myself, I had been faceto-face with only one Godfearing-God-believing man who shared to me his deep thoughts about that August 31, 2012 earthquake that the Philippine government had traced to have occurred several kilometers deep in the sea several kilometers o Guiuans eastern shores and which moved for long, long seconds the whole mainlands and shores of Region VIII in the Philip-

pines. It was Je Manibay, the genius of a man behind the fast-growing, fast-developing, fast-professionalizing CAT 8 cable television network that is based in Tacloban highly urbanized city. According to Je, he had thought deeply about the harrowing experiences that people in the region, very especially in Guiuan and even in Tacloban which is home of the miraculous image of Santo Nino (Holy Child Jesus) and he was convinced that how the whole of Region VIII has been spared from possible destructive eects of that deadly event was a miracle, one which we all must thank God for. Je shared his thoughts and plans about a thanksgiving event, which he had hoped could be a yearly event that may even strike into the sensibilities of disaster-preparedness planners today and in the future, and had not isolated his concept of an August Thirty-One Miracle, which he abbreviated into ATOM. He had wished the Catholic Church and the media to take the lead, and the rest in the region to follow. Come this August 31, that will to happen. Next year, the event may see more participants, all thanking God for that miracle. For now, too, QN wishes to thank Je for his idea, a very relevant matter to think about, accept and concretize. Thus, lately, ATOM has been formally launched. Among its organizers are the

Catholic Church (particularly Santo Nino parish) as represented by the friendbrother-of-the-media Fr. Alvero, radio station DyVL through station manager Babes Custodio, Leyte Samar Daily Express and sister publications publisher Dalmacio Massey Candido Grafil, and Je himself. As planned for the commemorative and thanksgiving event by August 31, there will be a land procession in Tacloban HUC by 3:30 p.m., and a concelebrated thanksgiving mass. DyVL and CAT8 (Countryside Associated Television 8) network will broadcast live and document the events and corollary reactions of the people. (Early this month, CAT8 has already begun asking Taclobanons how they remember that earthquake.) The 7.6 earthquake was reported by USGS (United State Geological Survey) as having occurred at 10.838N, 126.704E from a depth of 34.9 km (21.7 miles), 94 km (58 miles) east of Sulangan (Guiuan), Philippines or 106 km (65 miles) east southeast of Guiuan / 161 km (100 miles) ESE of Borongan (the first and only city in Eastern Samar) / 174 km (108 miles) northeast of Surigao in Mindanao , with location uncertainty of horizontal +/- 13.3 km (8.3 miles), depth +/- 2.8km (1.7 miles), and as having occurred at 8:47:34 PM at epicenter on August 31, 2012, a Friday. Its reported intensities were as follows: 7 in Guiuan, Oras, Sulat and Borongan in Eastern Samar; 6 in Siargao, Surigao del Norte, Tacloban
