Why Geography as Optional

Geography is one of the most dynamic subjects among the humanities. Though a part of humanities, it has semi-scientific nature, which sets it apart from other optional papers. This optional incorporates multi-disciplinary approach (economic geography, geology, agriculture, environment, Bio-geography) with emphasis on the inter connection between these diverse branches of knowledge (inter disciplinary approach) thus it helps broadening the overall understanding level of its aspirants. Moreover it is immensely scoring by virtue of its semi-scientific nature. This optional has interest advantage in G.S, according in the recently changed syllabus; the weight age of geography has been enhanced. Now geography account for about 40%. Of the syllabus of G.S (Prelim), i.e.1. 2. 3. India and world geography including the physical, social and economic geography of India and world. Sustainable development, Poverty, demographics Issues of environment, ecology, biodiversity and climate change.

With enhanced weight age it geography, now this optional will account for 40-50 Question in G.S Paper-I. Moreover in G.S. Mains about 100-150 marks question are from geography. The important thing is that the nature of Question which are asked in G.S (Prelim-Mains) in such that, only those aspirants who have geography as the optional can afford to attempt them. Above all, it helps shaping the personality of the aspirant which goes a long way in deciding the ultimate success in this exam.

Preparation and Problems

Although, there is no dearth of geography book but most of the books available do not give complete picture of the topic. So at times two or mor this makes self preparation a bit difficult. Moreover those who are going to take mains exam this year it is obviously a time consuming job for th the topic in totality, then incorporating the relevant maps and diagram and finally preparing the model answers.

On the other hand the new aspirant needs the clarity of the basic concepts and fundamental of their subject for this they need to go through NCE

insight of the subject, but these book in themselves are not sufficient by virtue of their nature and purpose (been designed for school children). H institute.
