LANCO PROJECT CHHATTISGARH INDIA

Under Guidance: Shri K.D.N. Singh A Project Report on the Partial Fulfillment of Vocational Training on

Submitted by: Abhinav Sharma, Rohit Shrivastava, Vikas Pandey

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The project bears imprints of many people. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all those people who have been instrumental in the successful completion of this project. I would like to show my greatest appreciation to Mr. K.D.N.Singh (HOD Turbine).I cant say thank you enough for their tremendous support and help. I feel motivated and encouraged every time I attend their meeting. Without their encouragement and guidance this project would not have materialized. I would like to convey my special Thanks and gratitude to Mr.Sudip Banerjee Officer HR, for his consistent support and guidance during the three weeks of vocational training. . The guidance and support received from all the TG team members of Lanco Infratech Ltd., including Mr. Milind Bhajan & Mr. Vinit Pradhan was vital for the success of the project. I am thankful for their constant support and help.

INTRODUCTION
LANCO Power Ltd (LPL) is setting up 2x660 MW Coal based power project near Pathadi - Saragbundia villages on the Champa - Korba State Highway in Chhattisgarh, India. The commissioning schedule of 36 months for Unit III and 40 Months for Unit IV categorizes these as fast track projects. Upon attaining the required statutory clearances for Unit 3, the implementation of the project with supercritical technology started from 1 January 2010 as the zero date. Letter of Acceptance for the supply of coal has been obtained for the third unit and Long Term Coal linkage has been obtained for fourth unit. Power Finance Corporation, the lead lender for the project has already appraised the project and the project is well poised to achieve financial closure shortly. The ultimate capacity of the LANCO Power Plant after completion of Phase IV would be around 1920 MW. |~|

What we learn in our vocational training

During our vocational training at Lanco we are with the Turbine team. We learn the following things

1. Setup of Turbine Deck 2. Strength Checking UT 3. Setup of Condenser Foundation 4. Centre Line Marking 5. Blue Matching of Foundation Plates

Setup of Turbine Deck

Turbine deck consists of three floors 1. Ground Floor- In this floor mainly, only the condenser is present.

2. First Floor or Massine Floor-- In this floor, turbine & generators are present.

3. Second Floor or Operating Floor- - In this floor, operating machines are placed.

Strength checking by UT Machine

In ultrasonic testing machine(UT), very short ultrasonic pulse-waves with center frequencies ranging from 0.1-15 MHz and occasionally up to 50 MHz are launched into materials to detect internal flaws or to characterize materials. The technique is also commonly used to determine the thickness of the test object.

Ultrasonic testing is often performed on steel and other metals and alloys, though it can also be used on concrete, wood and composites. It is a form of non-destructive testing used in many industries.

It is done to check the strength of the foundation. It can show the air bubbles between the concrete through waves. It is measure done to prevent the foundation from being collapsed.|~|

fig. 2- during checking (no air bubble)

fig. 3- during checking

The concretes of the foundations are marked per square feet by a special paste and are connected to the equipment which is connected to a computer monitor. Continuous waves are seen through the monitor & if the air bubble is present then there is a gap in the waves. It took about 10 days to check a unit turbine of power plant.

How it works
In ultrasonic testing, an ultrasound transducer connected to a diagnostic machine is passed over the object being inspected. The transducer is typically separated from the test object by a couplant (such as oil) or by water, as in immersion testing. There are two methods of receiving the ultrasound waveform, reflection and attenuation. In reflection (or pulse-echo) mode, the transducer performs both the sending and the receiving of the pulsed waves as the "sound" is reflected back to the device. Reflected ultrasound comes from an interface, such as the back wall of the object or from an imperfection within the object. The diagnostic machine displays these results in the form of a signal with an amplitude representing the intensity of the reflection and the distance, representing the arrival time of the reflection. In attenuation (or through-transmission) mode, a transmitter sends ultrasound through one surface, and a separate receiver detects the amount that has reached it on another surface after traveling through the medium. Imperfections or other conditions in the space between the transmitter and receiver reduce the amount of sound transmitted, thus revealing their presence. Using the couplant increases the efficiency of the process by reducing the losses in the ultrasonic wave energy due to separation between the surfaces.

Centre Line Marking

It is done to check the alignment of the foundations. If all the pedestals will not be in same alignment i.e. not proper balanced and coaxial then it will result with decrease in efficiency and even it may collapse. We have seen it on pedestals of condenser.

It is done for finishing of the condenser plates. A standard specimen is available which helps to finish the surfaces of the condenser plates. The work piece is firstly polished with a special liquid called as blue liquid. Later the standard specimen is rubbed over the colored portion. After rubbing, standard specimen is removed & the work piece is examined whether it is fit or not. If not then the surface is finished by grinding.|~|
