Abundantly Blessed, Humbly We Serve

Xaviers 2013-2014 theme, Abundantly blessed, humbly we serve was selected out of a desire to focus on gratefulness. The Xavier community, students, faculty and staff know their blessings are from God and sense the overwhelming love of God. Out of this gratefulness, we serve. Gods kingdom will only come when we all serve as His hands and feet.

Welcome to the 2013-14 school year, Xaviers sixteenth. A very special welcome to the parents of our incoming freshmen and transfer students, as well as those families hosting exchange students. We look forward to having you as part of a very special community - the Xavier family. Following a terrific 2012-13, were looking forward to another outstanding year of academics, activities, worship and service! Once again, we will look to our seniors to provide the leadership to make that happen. Our theme this year is, Abundantly blessed, humbly we serve. We look forward to partnering with you and your students to bring that theme to life. We have indeed been blessed with so many gifts and it is our responsibility to use those gifts in serving others. After much anticipation, we are very excited this year to introduce Xaviers Digital Learning Environment. Each of our students will receive an iPad this fall for use in and out of school to enhance their educational experience. There is no denying that we live in a device world and we believe this initiative will help our (continued on page 2)

students become better prepared for that world. This program is only possible through the work of so many who are committed to making a Xavier education something exceptional. The Xavier Foundation and our many benefactors who believe in the value of this endeavor have provided the seeding funds needed to kick-off the program. Our parents have attended meetings, posed questions and offered feedback. They have also been supportive of the need to sustain the program through our technology fee. Our Controller, Shea Francis has created a long-term technology budget to plan for the coming years. Our associate principal, Ms. Olson and a team of Xavier teachers have taken the lead in finding innovative ways to incorporate this technology into the classroom. Our student team of Xperts is already preparing the devices for deployment and stand ready to assist both faculty and students with anything related to the use of the iPad. As you know from e-mails sent, in preparation for our DLE, each student and one parent/guardian will be required to attend an iPad informational meeting. Registration for those meetings was to be done online. If you have not done so, please make sure to take care of this ASAP. If you need assistance in registering, please contact Peggy Hrncirik in our main office. No student will be issued an iPad until he/ she has attended a meeting and has submitted all necessary forms. As with the beginning of any major initiative, we anticipate that we will learn a great deal in our first year. Despite all of our preparation, we will likely encounter challenges from time to time that can only be identified through experience. It will take patience on the part of our students, parents, faculty and staff to help us navigate our way through these challenges. I know we can count on everyones support! Along with the benefit of this learning device comes the responsibility of its use. We expect that all students handle their devices with care, respect the devices of others and use the devices in a productive and moral way. Above all it is important to remember that the student iPad is a tool. It will not replace anyone or anything but rather will enhance the educational experience by building on the opportunity to create, collaborate and share. Our students must go beyond being consumers of information. It is also important to remember that the iPad will not be used every minute of every class period nor on every minute of every assignment. It will be used extensively but not exclusively. I invite all of you to visit with your students as they begin their experience in the Xavier Digital Learning Environment. Encourage them to show you the ways they use the device in their classes, in their research, in their presentations, in their homework and in their assessment. The more you learn about how they are using it, the more excited I believe you will become! Our 2012-13 year was without question one of our most successful in faith development, in academics, in activities, and in service. Knowing our Xavier community, knowing our faculty and staff, and knowing our students, I am confident that we will build on that momentum and find ways to show that 2013-14 can be our best ever! Sincerely, Tom Keating, Principal

Abundantly Blessed, Humbly We Serve

Submitted By: Mrs. Sue May
The theme created by the Campus Ministry team for this school year, Abundantly blessed, humbly we serve, describes how I try to live my life. I am abundantly blessed in many ways and I humbly strive to serve Christ and his Church. The essence of our theme is found in Proverbs 11:25, The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed as well as Matthew 23:11, The greatest among you will be the one who serves the rest. These Scriptures point out that an attitude of gratitude leads to an attitude of service. When we have an attitude of gratitude and acknowledge that everything we have is a gift from God, it leads to a desire to give back to God through service for his abundant blessings. Being a servant for the kingdom in this way shows a poverty of spirit and a humble dedication to the mission of Christ. Service should flow out of our Baptismal call. As a member of the Xavier faculty for the past 7 years, I have had many opportunities to serve through my work in Theology and Campus Ministry. These experiences include being on the adult team for the Kairos retreats, directing the Liturgy Singers for All-School Masses, being on the Xavier summer mission team through Catholic Heart Workcamp, and chaperoning the annual March for Life pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. As a classroom teacher I can demonstrate to my students how Christs humble attitude of serving others must be our attitude as well. Students can witness how our desire to serve flows from the abundance of Christs gifts to us. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). As a member of St. Pius X Church since moving to Cedar Rapids in 1985, I have had additional opportunities for service with my family. With my husband Tony and our children, Aaron (X08) and Marita (X10), we served our parish by sharing our gift of music at Sunday liturgies and were part of a mission team organized by St. Pius X Church in 2008 to Nuevo Progresso, Mexico. During this mission trip we built houses for four needy families of Our Lady of Sorrow Catholic Church and organized a summer Bible School for the children of the parish. Presently I serve as a musician for Sunday liturgies, direct the High School Youth Choir, and am a Eucharistic Minister. This past year I facilitated a Confirmation small group and served as a member of the Faith Formation Commission. All of these opportunities of humble service have blessed my life, enriched my faith, and drawn me closer to Christ. The patron saint of Xavier High School is a model of service for us. St. Francis Xavier is considered one of the greatest missionaries in Christian history, conducting his lifes work with great vitality and zeal while always keeping the love of Christ as the center of his ministry. The following quote of St. Francis Xavier is an inspiration in living out the Gospel message: It is not the actual physical exertion that counts towards ones progress, nor the nature of the task, but by the spirit of faith with which it is undertaken. Let us strive this school year to foster an attitude of gratitude because we are abundantly blessed. May we, like St. Francis Xavier, humbly serve others and through this service, bring Christ to a broken world.

Let us strive this school year to foster an attitude of gratitude because we are abundantly blessed.

Throughout the 2012-13 school year Go Green Environmental Club:
1. Helped reduce the use of almost 70,000 disposable water bottles by supporting the bottle refill stations and encouraging the use of re-usable water bottles 2. Collected hundreds (a room full) of printer cartridges for recycling; The money collected over the years was contributed to help with the cost of the water refill stations. 3. Collected 6-7 boxes of used batteries and transported to the city recycling center, saving resources, and more importantly preventing toxics from going to the landfill and possibly into our groundwater. 4. Collected 90 cell phones and donated them to The Arc of Eastern Iowa, to help those with disabilities. Thank you to those who contributed, and we hope Xavier will continue its efforts to be Good Stewards of God's Earth Go Green Club.

Feast of the Assumption Thursday August 15th

What is the Feast of the Assumption? The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, The Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things. Why is this feast so important? The Assumption completes Gods work in Mary since it was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God Himself should ever undergo decay. The Assumption is Gods crowning of His work as Mary ends her earthly life and enters eternity. This is an important of Marian feast as well as being a holy day of obligation. On this day, we reflect upon our lives and our hope that we too will spend our eternity with Mary in heaven. There are many distractions in the world to divert our attention from this heavenly goal. Mark 8:36 reminds us For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Wealth and power will not gain you entrance into Gods kingdom. Saying yes to His will for your life, as Mary and Jesus lovingly did, are our examples of success. Saint Augustine shares this golden nugget of truth, Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee. If you want peace in this life, seek out God in prayer. He alone is the source of peace, both in this world and the next. Mary Queen of Peace, please pray for us!

Xavier Student Meets Madeleine Albright

Last spring, Xavier senior Zach Schnoebelen had the opportunity to be part of a panel asking questions of former Secretary of State (and first woman to serve in this high cabinet position) Madeleine Albright at the Czech and Slozak Museum. Michael Biermann and Carly Kenney also attended along with Mrs. Winter, from Xavier's AP U.S. History classes. Secretary Albright kept all absorbed in her interesting experiences as Secretary of State. The group especially enjoyed the story about the skit the U.S. and Russia did together for an international conference as a take-off of "West Side Story" converted into "East-West Side Story."

Avoiding Heat Related Illnesses
Submitted by: Heather Boyer As fall sports season rapidly approaches, I just want to emphasize the importance of heat-related illnesses.
Heat Cramps: painful spasms of the muscle caused by dehydration. Prevented by proper pre-hydration and relieved with gentle stretching, ice, and increased fluid consumption. Heat Exhaustion: the most common type of heat illness. It is caused by decreased blood volume due to dehydration. Characterized by dizziness, headache, nausea, profuse sweating, cool/clammy skin, rapid/weak pulse, and body temperature elevated. To treat, remove from hot environment and cool as quickly as possible. Heat Stroke: the least common but most serious, even fatal. Caused by the bodys cooling system shutting down and blood volume being so low that the person stops sweating and goes into shock. It is characterized by disorientation, unconsciousness, no sweating, hot/dry skin, increased body temperature, rapid/strong pulse. Treatment requires rapid cooling and immediate transportation to the hospital. To prevent any heat related illnesses from occurring drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after exercise. Avoid caffeinated beverages and take several breaks when it is hot outside. Also, it is important to acclimate yourself to the heat gradually before beginning any kind of strenuous activity. This process usually takes at least a week, so plan ahead. Heather will be in the training room starting August 12 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. everyday (or as noted on the training room door), so if you have questions or concerns feel free to stop by or give call her at Linn County Physical Therapy (319) 362-6994 during morning hours.

Health Services News

Prescription Medications
Submitted by: Kris Naeve
Students who need to take prescription or over the counter medications at school need to bring their medication (in the original prescription or over the counter bottle labeled with directions and prescribing health care providers name) to the nurses office or the main office. Students should not carry ANY containers with prescription medications with them in the school. Students are allowed to carry their inhalers. Students who need to take medications at school must have a signed consent form on file in the nurses office for the staff to administer this medication. This form is available at the Xavier web page under Services, then Health, then Forms. Kris Naeve

Here are some tips if your student needs to be on a prescription medication during the year:
Ask your health care provider for a medication that does not require a lunch time dose Ask the pharmacy to prepare a school bottle that can be left at school For those students requiring emergency medications such as an Epi-Pen, Glucagon Kit, or Albuterol for nebulizer treatments, those would need to be provided by you to the school along with same consent form described above. I look forward to seeing returning students again this year and welcome new students. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 294-6635 x 318 or kris.naeve@xaviersaints.org if you have any questions or concerns about your students health.

Skin Infection Prevention:

Submitted by: Kris Naeve Its that time of year again when students are back and participating in various activities. Here are a few reminders to help protect your children from the possibility of staph infection as they are in activities that they come into contact with each other.
Staphylococcus aureas (known as staph) is a common bacterium that is carried on the skin of even healthy people. Around 30% of people carry the staph bacteria and never develop any symptoms. When an infection does occur, it is usually mild. However, there is a chance that the infection could become invasive and that is when we have a more serious threat to their health. Because of the chance of a more serious infection, we want to pass along a few helpful reminders. 1. Students should not share personal items such as towels, bar soap, razors, etc. 2. Students should shower after every athletic activity using soap and clean towels 3. Students should take equipment home daily to disinfect (i.e. protective pads, helmets, etc with disinfecting wipes or spray) 4. Students should wash hands regularly with warm soapy water for 20 seconds frequently 5. Skin cuts or breaks should be kept clean and dry to minimize the chance of developing staph 6. All wounds must be covered Xavier follows protocols to keep locker rooms, weight room, and the building clean, as they always have. Coaches and Moderators will stress the above recommendations to their students as well. However, if your student has any suspicious sores or rashes, we recommend immediate follow up with a physician to determine if it is staph infection and getting appropriate treatment. The following link is for the Iowa Department of Public Health and may help to answer any other questions, but as always, feel free to call or e-mail me with questions or concerns at 294-6635 x 318 or kris.naeve@xaviersaints.org. http://www.idph.state.ia.us/ adper/common/pdf/abx/mrsa_faq.pdf.

The musical, Little Shop of Horrors is filled with a shy but plucky hero, a Faye Ray lovable heroine, a slimy dentist, an unsuspecting flower shop owner, 4 ravishing back -up singers and of course a carnivorous visitor from another world. Come and enjoy an evening of musical spoof of all those late night horror movies that used to make Baby Boomers scared to go to sleep at night. Tickets are just $6 for adults and $4 for all students.
