Objectives This course is intended to introduce to students: (i) the basic concepts of signals and signals processing including aircraft navigation data, and (ii) the various instruments used for aircraft navigation, methods of processing the navigation data, choice of flight computers and issues related to flight software implementation. Learning outcomes The students will be able to understand and appreciate the concepts of signals and data processing, Radio and Inertial navigation, various aircraft navigation and flight computer hardware and software systems. Course Outline S/N Topic Hours 1. INTRODUCTION TO SIGNALS 9 hrs Signals, Elements of measurement systems, Random signals and processes, Pre-processing and data editing. Probability and random signal and processing; Auto- and cross- correlation; Power spectrum. 2. GPS NAVIGATION SIGNAL AND DATA PROCESSINGS 9 hrs GPS signal structures, receiver signal processing, Illustration of navigation and tracking. Processing with discrete measurements, Different kinds of measurement errors. Basics of batch and sequential processing to reduce the effect of measurement errors. Applications of estimation for aerospace navigation. Implementation issues. 3. Ground-based Radio Navigation 8 hrs Terrestrial Radio Navigation Signals and Receiving Methods:- VHF Omni-Range(VOR)/Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), Long RANge Navigation (LORAN), Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN). 4. INERTIAL NAVIGATION 8 hrs Principles of Guidance and Navigation. Coordinate transformations. Categories of flight. Navigation accuracy requirements. Inertial navigation methods. Inertial sensors - accelerometers, gyroscopes for angle and rate sensing. Landing systems. Requirements on Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) and Ground Controlled Landing (GCL). 5. FUNDAMENTALS AND TRENDS OF FLIGHT COMPUTERS 5 hrs Basic structure of computers. Progress and advances in component technology and computer architecture.
