CAMPERDOWN NEW BULK SEWER RETICULATION NETWORK AND WASTE WATER TREATMENT WORKS PLANT GEOTECHNICAL REPORT 1. INTRODUCTION This report presents the results of a geotechnical investigation undertaken for the proposed new bulk sewer reticulation network and waste water treatment works plant in Camperdown near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. It is intended that the proposed development will comprise the following: Sludge ponds, aeration tanks, a concrete channel, a chlorine contact channel structures and about 15 km long incoming sewer reticulation pipelines and other ancillary structures. The objectives of the geotechnical investigation of the sewer reticulation routes were: To define the nature and variability of the founding conditions for the proposed reticulation pipelines, To determine the geology along the proposed reticulation routes, To determine the classes of excavation along the reticulation routes, To provide and assessment of the suitability of the in situ materials for the use as Selected Granular Material (bedding) and Selected Back Fill Material, To identify any potentially problematic geological conditions along the reticulation routes.
The aim of the geotechnical investigation at the proposed waste water treatment works plant site is to provide a suitable founding medium for the plant, discuss problematic conditions and provide recommendations for foundation design. The interpretation of the overall subsurface conditions across the site is inferred, using professional judgement, from the interpolation and extrapolation of point information assimilated from the various test positions. 2. APPOINTMENT Terratest (Pty) Ltd were appointed to undertake the investigation by Mr Preben Naidoo of Preben Naidoo & Associates on the 31 May 2011 on the basis of a quotation (Ref: 400183/geo056/DB/db) submitted on the 20 May 2011. 3. INFORMATION AVAILABLE The following information was made available for the use during investigation: The 1:250 000 Geological Map Series, 2930 Durban published by Council of Geoscience, An aerial photograph showing the proposed new bulk sewer reticulation network and waste water treatment works plan, provided by Mr Duran Gengan of Preben Naidoo & Associates.

The proposed sewer reticulation network is located within the Camperdown town near Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. The waste water treatment works plant is situated on the western side of the Rainbow Chicken Complex in Camperdown. Access to the site is off the N3 National Road, Camperdown offramp which joins the roads in the Camperdown town. Topographically, the eastern side of the area within which the proposed bulk sewer network is located is relatively flat, anticipated to be created on a cut to fill platform of the Camperdown CBD area. The western side of the area is characterised by drainage channels and hills. No major drainage channels were noted on site. The waste water treatment works plant is located on a gently to moderately sloping topography. A Site Plan is attached as Figure 1 and a Geological Plan is included as Figure 2, both in Appendix A. 5. FIELDWORK The field investigation was carried out during the month of July 2011 and comprised the following: i) Trial pits, and ii) Dynamic Cone Penetrometer Tests. 5.1. Trial pits Thirty six trial pits, designated TP17 to TP52, were excavated by means of a tractorloader-backhoe (TLB) at the approximate positions shown in Figure 1 to evaluate the subgrade conditions beneath the pipeline routes. These trial pits were advanced to refusal and final depths between 1.5 and 3.0 metres below existing ground level. Sixteen trial pits, designated TP1 to TP16, were excavated by a TLB at the waste water treatment works plant site to final and refusal depths between 1.5 and 3.0 metres below existing ground level. All trial pits were profiled immediately after excavation by an Engineering Geologist in accordance with the method of Jennings et al., (1973) and are attached in Appendix B of this report. Representative disturbed samples of the material recovered were taken from selected horizons for later laboratory testing to determine the suitability of the soils for use as bedding blanket material for the pipeline routes and the behavior of the soils towards the waste water treatment works plant. 5.2. Dynamic Cone Penetration Tests Sixteen in-situ Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) tests, designated DCP1 to DCP16, were carried out adjacent to the trial pits at the location of the proposed waste water treatment works plant to assess the consistency of the in situ subsoils

and to provide an indication to the depths at which hard material occurs. The tests were advanced to refusal depths between 0.6 and 2.4 metres below ground level. The results of the DCP tests are included in Appendix C of this report. The results have been used to derive, empirically, Estimated Allowable Safe Bearing Pressures (EASBP) for the soils. The estimation of the EASBPs is based on Terzaghis settlement chart for 25mm of settlement, using empirical correlations, from the DCP test results. The DCP test results indicate that the EASBPs under the site are generally high at depths normally associated with normal founding in shale bedrock. 6. GENERAL GEOLOGY The site is generally underlain by fill, transported and residual soils overlying shale and sandstone bedrocks of the Dwyka Formation. The 1:250 000 Geological Map Series, 2930 Durban indicate the area to be intruded by Jurassic Aged dolerites. Dolerite intrusions were not encountered during investigation. 6.1. Fill Materials Fill material occurs on selected positions of the site and comprise yellowish brown to dark reddish brown and brown, silty clayey gravel and gravelly silty clays with gravel components comprising weathered shale. The fill materials occur from surface level through to depths between 0.1 and 1.6 metres below existing ground level. 6.2. Transported Soils 6.2.1. Colluvial Soils
Colluvial soils mostly occur at the surface level across the site, but were also encountered below fill materials. Colluvial soils comprise greyish brown to dark greyish brown, firm to stiff, fissured, silty clays to sandy clays and silty sands containing root materials, ferruginised nodules and shale gravel. This layer occurs to depths between 0.3 and 1.6 metres below existing ground level. 6.2.2. Pedogenic Soils
Accumulation of iron and frequently manganese oxides and hydrates is a commonly occurring pedogenic phenomenon related to a varying water table. This process takes place between the limits of a fluctuating water table and results in the formation of mottles and hard concretions, often with black/dark greyish brown centres. With time the concretions may coalesce, resulting in an open honeycomb structure (commonly known as honeycomb ferricrete), or coalesce further to form a continuous sheet, commonly known as hardpan ferricrete. A ferruginised horizon was encountered in most trial pits put down during investigation and is generally described as dark brown to reddish brown, mottled yellow and red speckled dark greyish brown, black and orangey brown, firm through to very stiff improving with depth, gravelly silty clays to silty clayey gravel with gravel components comprising ferruginised nodules. In general, this gravelly horizon occurs

at an average depth of 0.9 meters, in the range 0.6 and 1.6 metres below existing ground level. This horizon is quite thick in place, for an example it exceeds 2.5 metres in TP24. 6.3. Residual Shale Soils and Weathered Shale Bedrock The weathered shale bedrock is either directly overlain colluvial soils or an intervening layer of residual shale soils comprising dark brown to dark orangey brown, mottled and speckled dark greyish brown, firm to stiff, gravelly silty clays to gravelly clayey silt with gravel components comprising weathered shale and ferruginised nodules. The residual soils occur at an average depth of 0.5 metres below existing ground level. The underlying bedrock comprises completely to highly weathered becoming less weathered with depth, very closely to closely jointed, very soft to soft rock strength improving with depth, shale. 6.4. Residual Sandstone Soils and Weathered Sandstone Residual sandstone soils developed from the complete weathering of sandstone bedrock is either overlain by colluvial soils or ferruginised horizon. These soils comprise dark reddish brown, mottled and speckled yellowish brown and dark greyish brown, stiff to very stiff, silty clays to clayey silt. These soils occur at an average depth of 0.7 metres below existing ground level. The underlying bedrock comprise purplish brown and brown, mottled and speckled light grey, completely to highly weathered, very closely to closely jointed, soft through to medium hard rock strength quartz sandstone. 7. GROUNDWATER Slight groundwater seepage was encountered in two trial pits i.e. TP20 and TP24, at a depth of 2.0 metres. However, during periods of prolonged rainfall, particularly the summer season, a marked increase in the occurrence and magnitude of groundwater seepage flow can be anticipated. Perched groundwater flows at the soil / rock interface are likely to become more prolific in these rainy months. 8. LABORATORY TESTING In order to assess more accurately the engineering properties of the various materials encountered on site and to provide information on their potential behaviour below foundations, the following material classification tests were carried out on selected samples during the investigation: Grading Analyses and Hydrometer tests, Atterberg Limit Determinations, and Dry Density vs Moisture Content & California Bearing Ratio tests.
The results of the laboratory tests are given in Appendix D and are summarized below for ease of reference.

9. GEOTECHNICAL EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 9.1. Proposed Pipeline Network More detailed information relating to the geotechnical conditions of the pipeline is included in the Geological Long Sections contained in Appendix E. The subsoil conditions between the test positions have been inferred using professional judgement. The Geological Long Sections of each section of the pipeline have been compiled based on the information gained during investigation. These sections include: The discrete number of each trial pit position, The coordinates of each trial pit position (WGS 84), A schematic summary of the class of excavation, Details of any soil sample taken, The suitability of the in situ material for use as a bedding material, and General comments.
9.2. Excavation Requirements The trenchability of the materials underlying the proposed pipeline has been assed according to the criteria published by SANS1200. Descriptions of excavations classes are given in Table 3 below. Table 3: Definitions of Excavation Classes Excavation Class Description Soft Excavation in material that can be efficiently removed by a back-acting excavator of flywheel power, approximately 0.10kW per millimetre of tined-bucket width without the use of pneumatic tools such as paving breakers. Intermediate Excavation in material that requires a back-acting excavator of flywheel power, approximately 0.10kW per millimetre of tined-bucket width or use of pneumatic tools before removal by equipment equivalent to that specified for soft excavation. Hard Hard excavation in material (excluding boulder excavation) that cannot be removed without blasting or wedging and splitting. Boulder (Excavation Excavation in material containing more than 40% by Class A) volume of boulders of size in the range of 0.03-20m, in matrix of soft or smaller boulders.
It is anticipated that the materials will present Soft Excavation Class to an average depth of 2.0 metres below existing ground level as inferred from the TLB refusal of the trial pits put down during investigation. The Excavation Class will vary in places therefore requiring Intermediate Excavation Class and possibly Hard or Boulder Excavation Class as indicated in Figure1.

If excavations are carried out over rainy periods, groundwater seepage may be encountered, and problems related to collapse of trench sidewalls are expected to occur, particularly where the sidewalls comprise sandy materials of colluvial and or residual soils as evidenced in TP 20, where minor sidewall collapse was observed. 9.3. Material Evaluation and Pipe Bedding In terms of the SANS 1200 LB (1983) concerning bedding requirements, buried pipelines require two types of selected material. Those selected materials are termed Selected Granular Material and Selected Fill Material. From both a visual assessment of the materials encountered in the trial pits and the results of the laboratory tests in Table 1, the following conclusions can be made regarding the suitability of the in situ materials for the use in the construction of the bedding layers of the pipeline: Selected Granular Material is described as granular, non-cohesive and singularly graded between 0.6 and 0.9mm. The material must be free draining and have a compactibility factor not exceeding 0.4. Selected Back Fill Material is defined as a material with a Plasticity Index (PI) not exceeding 6, free from lumps, vegetation and stones of a diameter exceeding 30mm.
In general, the Selected Granular Material is used as bedding material to support the pipe, while the Selected Back Fill Material is used as blanket material over the crown of the pipe. General Backfill material, which is placed above the blanket materials, up to ground level normally, consists of material originally removed from the trench for the pipe excavation. The in situ materials along the pipeline routes are considered not suitable for use as Selected Granular Material or Selected Back Fill Material due to high content of fines over majority of the pipeline route. The materials meeting the SANS 1200 LB requirements would thus need to be imported to the site. 9.4. Backfill and Erosion Aspects The trench line can also become a route for continued erosion activity and with time could develop into a donga feature with resistant failure of the pipeline. Where the pipeline is running perpendicular to contour, over gradients steeper than about 1 vertical to 6 horizontal, it is recommended that every 3 to 5 metre interval a section of the backfill be stabilised with lime or cement (about 4% by mass) to form an erosion resistance plug. The section of stabilised soil should be about 1 to 2 metres in length. Compaction of the general backfill soils over the bedding layer should be carried out in layers of maximum loose thickness 200mm and compacted to minimum 92% MOD AASHTO dry density. This is critical to ensure that settlement over pipes and within trench outlines is limited, particularly where they cross underneath roads or paved areas. Settlement of trench backfill beneath roads and paved areas due to vehicle wheel loads can be limited further by stabilising backfill materials as discussed above.

Consideration should also be given to carefully replacing the grass cover sods back over the trench to encourage re-growth to stabilise the disturbed soils. 9.5. Trench Stability In general it is anticipated that vertical sidewall of trench excavations will be stable over the short term. The sidewalls of the trial pits put down for investigation were stable while the investigation was in progress. It is considered that in general trenches not exceeding 1.5 metre depth can remain open for periods of up to 2 days without significant collapse provided no significant rainfall and associated rise in groundwater seepage occurs during this period. If saturation of the trench occurs, sidewalls of trenches deeper than 1m should either be battered to a safe angle of 1V:2H (cohesionless) or supported laterally. In this respect it is recommended that the length of trenches likely to be left open for any sustained period be limited to prevent deterioration in the trench stability. 10. GENERAL ASSESSMENT OF THE WASTE WATER TREATMENT WORKS (WWTW) SITE 10.1. Proposed Waste Water Treatment Works Plant It is understood that the waste water treatment works plant will comprise 65m length open concrete channel, two 13.5 metre diameter clarifiers, aeration tank, sludge beds and chlorine contact channel. 11. RECOMMENDATIONS From a geotechnical perspective, the site appears suitable for the proposed waste water treatment works plant. 11.1. Waste Water Treatment Works Infrastructure The trial pits put down for the investigation in the location of the WWTW plant indicate the site to be underlain by shallow shale bedrock occurring at an average depth of 0.9 metres in the range 0.3 and 1.5 metres below existing ground level. The bedrock is in turn overlain by transported and residual soils that are generally described as being firm to stiff in consistency. The DCP test results indicate that soils underlying the proposed WWTW have generally high Estimated Safe Allowable Bearing Pressures (EASBPs) of a minimum 217kPa. It is recommended that WWTW infrastructure is founded in the very soft to soft rock strength or harder shale bedrock. A minimum EASBP of 200kPa can be assumed in these above described founding conditions. It is further recommended that conventional strip footing foundations be utilised for the proposed structures. Localised areas where an EASBP of greater than 200kPa may be adopted were encountered. These are the areas where the TLB machine refused at depths between 1.1 and 1.3 metres below existing ground level on medium hard rock strength. Those areas were TP6, TP9, TP10, TP12, TP13 and TP14.
August 2011
T:\ACTIVE PROJECTS\41151 - Camperdown Sewer Treatment Plant (GN)\04 Documents and Reports\J&G Reports\Geotech report 41151.doc
It is imperative that site drainage and landscaping is implemented in all areas to prevent surface ponding, where subsequent ingress into fills and foundations has the potential to cause destabilisation over time, such as differential settlements due to lowered subsoil strength. This must also include the conveyance of all runoff and roof discharge away from the structures and into the natural drainage lines. 11.3. Cut and Fill Design General good practice for cuts and fills of less than 2m height should be followed. Cuts and fills that exceed 2m should be designed with special considerations applied to them. The fill must be compacted in layers not exceeding 200mm or the appropriate layer thickness for the compaction plant, whichever is the lesser. Compaction should be to at least 93% of the Modified AASHTO maximum dry density at optimum moisture content. Provided that the construction is done properly it is expected that a slope of 1 in 2.5 should be adequate for the stability of the constructed slope. All cut and fill slopes must be suitably vegetated as soon as possible after construction to reduce the risk of erosion and instability due to infiltration. Although excavations are not expected to be problematic, the contractor will need to appoint an excavation supervisor in terms of section 11 of the Construction Regulations 2003. 11.4. Earthworks It is recommended that all earthworks be carried out in accordance with SANS 1200D: 1988, as amended from time to time. Shoring of trenches for foundations and services is not likely to be required for depths of up to 1.2m but must be assessed on site by the contractors duly appointed competent person as required by the Construction Regulations 2003. 11.5. Parking Areas and Internal Roads
It is expected that the parking areas and internal roads will be lightly trafficked. The layer works should therefore be designed by a competent engineer for the anticipated traffic loads. As determined from a laboratory results in Table 1, the in situ materials range from sandy silt to clayey silt. These materials will provide a poor quality subgrade. Generally, it will suffice to treat the in situ subgrade material by ripping to a minimum depth of 300mm (or as required by the roads design Engineer) and recompact to a minimum 93% Mod AASHTO dry density. 12. CONCLUSIONS This report presents the results of a geotechnical investigation undertaken for the proposed Camperdown Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) and the proposed pipeline routes.

The investigation undertaken has concluded that the site is suitable for the proposed development, provided that the recommendations provided in this report are adhered to. The site is underlain by weathered shale and sandstone bedrocks of the Dwyka Formation. The bedrocks are either overlain by transported or residual soils. According to the specifications contained in SANS 1200 LB (1983), the in situ soils underlying the sit are not considered for use as Selected Back Fill Materials or as Selected Granular Materials. These materials will need to be imported to site. Selected in situ materials are suitable as Main Fill only. Excavation conditions are generally soft mechanism excavation extending to intermediate excavation in place. Recommendations for the founding, drainage and earthworks at the proposed WWTW location are also provided. Finally, it should be noted that the subsoil conditions contained in this report relate to the information obtained from the trial pits and DCP tests put down for investigation. It is possible that variances to the anticipated subsoil conditions will be encountered in other parts of the site during construction. It is therefore important that when such variances occur, they are reported to Terratest (Pty) Ltd so that timeous assessment and recommendations for the necessary adjustments to construction procedure can be made. It is also critical that Terratest inspect and approve foundation excavations to confirm depth of founding and bearing pressures. 13. REFERENCES Jennings, J.E., Brink, A.B.A. and Williams, A.A.B.
