Here are some tips for picture tube and drive board circuit faults –

1 – No raster, sound ok. –If sound is ok. But there is no picture than follow following
steps , you will easily reach to fault location and faulty part .
1 –First of all try to see the filament glow in the neck of picture tube , if there is on light
of filament then check voltage on filament pins , if voltage is not available than check
filament supply circuit , including the parts coming in the path of supply for open circuit
only, if voltage is available on the filament pins of picture tube socket than , go for
filament and socket open, by resistance measurement .Replace defective part .
2- If filament glows normaly, than measure voltage on grid -1 of picture tube (find pt pins
details from circuit diagram or data site. If G-1 voltage is not normal, check circuit for G-
1 supply. As per circuit diagram for faulty part.
3- If G-1 voltage is normal go for G-2 (screen grid) voltage, if it is low or zero than check
parts coming in the path of supply from eht transformer to G-2 for open circuit by
measuring voltages on the path .
4- If G-2 voltage is normal than measure voltage on all three cathodes , if they all are
high than check cathode drive circuit bias supplies for cut off of all three drive circuits .
Voltage measurement will help here. Compare with normal voltage, you can get fault
which is common to all three drive circuits.
5- If all cathode voltages are normal than check weather eht supply is being supplied to
picture tube or not . You can test it by- shut down TV and than discharge pt EHT anode
using a heavy insulated wire , for that first connect one end of wire to GROUND and
than by inserting other end under hv anode carefully . If loud sound is heard than
probably eht supply is being supplied to pt is normal, so replace pt with good one. If
sound is weak, than check for weak h-out put section. Eht transformer may be faulty.

Raster coloured – remember following colour combinations –

1 - red + green = yellow
2- red + blue = magenta
3- green + blue = cyan
4 - red + blue + green = white
5- -red- blue – green = black
These combinations helps and guide to locate faulty circuit .

At any time if raster is coloured, measure the voltages on the pt’s 3 cathodes if these
voltages are normal , than fault is in pt only . check by replacing pt . But if voltages are
not normal may be high or low, raster will be coloured . See wich colour is coming and
wich combination makes this colour . this will help to find faulty drive . Minor error may
be adjusted by by setting drive controls or data by going in the service mode , if allowed .
Check by following tips –
If raster is white and no retrace lines or black and white picture is ok than pt
and drive board is perfect there is no need to check them .
If raster is RED –If red cathode voltage is low , than check red drive for low
collector voltage(Vc – low) faults ( use master key tr faults ) . If red cathode voltage is
normal, than check blue and green cathodes for hi voltage faults.
If raster is blue - if blue cathode voltage is low , than check blue cathode drive circuit
for low collector voltage faults (Vc –low ) ( use master key for tr faults). If cathode
voltage is normal, than check green and red cathodes, for high voltage faults.
If raster is green – if green cathode voltage is low , than check green drive for high
collector voltage faults (Vc –low) use master key tr faults ) . If green cathode voltage is
normal than go for red and blue cathodes for high voltage faults.
If raster is yellow – in this fault blue colour is less , so go for blue cathode voltage. If
blue cathode voltage is high than go for collector voltage high faults in the blue cathode
drive . If blue cathode voltage is normal than go for green and red cathode voltage low
faults.
If raster is magenta – green coloun is less . check green cathode voltage , if it is
high than check green drive for collector voltage high faults . If green cathode voltage is
normal than check red and blue cathodes for low voltage faults .
If raster is cyan – red is less. Check red cathode for high voltage . If voltage is high
than repair red drive for hi collector voltage . if voltage is normal than check green and
blue drives for low collector voltage .

Retrace lines in picture and raster – If retrace lines are seen in the picture or raster ,
try to adjust brightness and contrass settings , If retrace lines dis appear , than it was due
to some change in value of the parts . If no improvement takes place than measure the
voltages of picture tube . G-2 voltage may be high or cathode drive voltages are low . If
all voltages are normal on the pt drive board , than check parts of vertical blanking pin to
video amp and picture tube drive board for open , weak , short . make use of circuit
diagram to find the parts coming in the path of vertical blanking pulses starting from
vertical IC going to pt . take care of minute changes . If voltage method do not help than
use the cro to check signal strength . If signal is weak check according to circuit , if signal
is not weak than check pt for over drive bias voltage or faulty weak transistor .
If retrace line has particular colour than go to respactive colour drive only .sometimes pt
may be faulty , after some time of normal play retrace lines appears , check connect meter
to the respective cathode and keep running untill retrace appears , see if cathode voltage
changes , if yes fault is probably in drive circuit , if voltage do not change even than
retrace line comes the faul is in the pt . Check by replacing pt . If you can inter change
cathodes safely with drive circuits , try iterchanging them ,If colour of retrace lines
changes fault is in the drive circuit , if colour does not chang than fault is in the pt .Try
recharge of pt if you have .

Brightness low – try to set brightness and measure voltage on any cathode of pt , if
voltage decreases by increasing brightness , than drive is ok . if voltage donot change ,
check chroma and video amp IC as per circuit diagram . if voltage change on cathode
than measure G-2 voltage , if low , than go for screen supply circuit in eht section . if ok
than go for eht HV check as given in other faults , if weak check eht section for weak , if
all parameters are ok replace pt . Increasin filament or recharging may help if circuit
design permits to do so .
Picture colour spreads by controlling brightness or cortras – pt is weak . replace
or recharge or increase filament voltage by creating one turn secondary on eht
transformer if permitted by circuit design , if increasing voltage reduces filament glow
than reverse direction of turn on eht transformer .

Picture tube precautions – never play with or try to mis handle pt .

Always discharge pt , before attempting any work in the vicinity of pt .
Never hold pt by neck .
