Dinosaurs come to The Domes

Visitors to the Mitchell Park Domes will step back in time when they enter Dinos Under Glass, a prehistoric exhibit now open in the Tropical Dome. Four model dinosaurs, ranging in length from 9 to 16 feet, are nestled among plants of the Tropical Dome. Allosaurus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, and Dromaeosaurus are easily viewed from the walking paths. Educational, interpretive signage is located throughout the exhibit. To complement the prehistoric experience, children, as well as adults, will have the opportunity to step inside a dinosaur fossil footprint, to take part in an interactive scavenger hunt in search of a dinosaur nest, and to test their knowledge on a crossword puzzle. The exhibit runs through late fall, so it can be incorporated into science field trips to The Domes. All four dinosaur models were purchased by the Friends of The Domes. This is such a great gift from The Friends, said Sandy Folaron, Director of the Mitchell Park Domes. This exhibit presents the opportunity not only to reach out to all those interested in dinosaurs, but also to those who are interested in prehistoric plants and their amazing adaptations. Highlighted in the exhibit are prehistoric plants, such as Horsetail (a native plant in Wisconsin), Hares Foot Fern, Sago Palm, Tree Fern, and ZZ Plant. Static dinosaur models include carnivores and herbivores from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The Domes are located at 524 S. Layton Blvd. in Milwaukee. Dear Dr. Winter, Mother is 96 years old and she started wearing dentures at about 60. She has no lower bone left! She has tried denture paste but it is useless. She eats the paste, gets sick to her stomach and when she leaves it out her lower denture bounces like a basketball when trying to eat. She can only drink her food now and is not a candidate for any surgery. Any suggestions? Dear L, I am sorry for your mothers problems. I would need to see her existing denture to evaluate the bite, the extensions of the denture acrylic and make sure it is fabricated properly to optimize her situation. When people have no bone left a soft silicone liner may help to increase the hold of the lower denture and provide more comfort. We do this by first testing it in tissue conditioner (like a soft band-aid) to see if her biting and chewing can be improved prior to making her a new set of dentures. That way she can see if we can help her before undergoing the expense of a new set of dentures. Lastly, I have successfully used mini-implants to stabilize dentures in patients with very little bone as we can place these in as little as 10 mm of bone. These would greatly help keep the dentures in place and prevent movement that interferes with her chewing! You can see videos of this on our website. New beach website available

With hot weather forecasted for the remainder of the week, Milwaukee County Parks, in partnership with the Sea Grant Institute and the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, has announced a new one-stopshop beach website at milwcountybeaches.org. This website gives our beach users all the information they need to decide to come out to the beachfrom the weather forecast to the UV index and more, said John Dargle, Parks Director. Weather forecast, nearshore marine forecast, and information on wind, airquality, the UV index, and bacterial monitoring are updated on the website as information becomes available on government monitoring sites. While some measures such as air-quality and the UV index apply to the general Milwaukee area, bacterial monitoring is beach-specific. Milwaukee County Parks beaches are Bradford, Bay View, Bender, Tietjen (Doctors Park), Grant, McKinley, and South Shore. Information on Shorewoods Atwater Park Beach and Whitefish Bays Klode Park Beach are also included on the website. With sunbathing, sand volleyball, soccer, beach yoga and other out-of-the-water activities, Milwaukee County's beaches are a popular destination even on days when swimming is not advised. The broad range of on-shore activities is a real testament to the commitment of the Milwaukee County Parks to provide opportunities to enjoy Lake Michigan, said Gene Clark, PE and Coastal Engineering Specialist of the UW Sea Grant Institute. In our surveys of beach patrons in the Milwaukee area, we were a bit surprised to find that only a few mentioned water quality as a reason they might not visit a beach. Most said there are many other reasons to visit the Milwaukee beaches besides the water activities. The new website is funded by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and designed by the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute and the Milwaukee County Parks.
