COLLABORATIVE PLANNING FORM Unit Title: Visual art research Library Media Specialist Name (s): Alexandra Moses

Teacher Name(s) and Title: Carolyn Kouri School Name: Alice Deal Middle School Teacher Email Address: carolynkouri@gmail.com Library Media Specialist E-mail Address: armoses@gmail.com Grade Level: 8th grade

Unit Overview: Visual art research: How can art be original? Students will examine various works of art and select an artist on which to focus. They will research key information about the artist and his/her style to create their own work of art, inspired by the original. Their product needs to convey their understanding of the artists life and how he/she was inspired to their creations. Student research must look at the artists biography and work.

Date/Time frame of Lesson: One class session, with follow-up in the library for individual students as needed.

Content Area Standards/Goals: DCPS Art Standard: 8.3.1: Develop perceptual skills, analyze elements of art and the principles of design: Use and identify hues, tints, tones, complimentary, analogous, and monochromatic colors. AASL Standards and Indicators: 1.1.4 Find, evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions. 1.1.5 Evaluate information found in selected sources on the basis of accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context.

1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning. 2.1.2 Organize knowledge so that it is useful. 2.1.6 Use the writing process, media and visual literacy, and technology skills to create products that express new understandings. 3.1.6 Use information and technology ethically and responsibly. Objectives: Students will be able to use the Internet to conduct research on a selected artist, locate information on the artists education, influences, and major works, and use that information to create an informative poster. Students will be able to demonstrate ethical use of information by properly citing the sources they used in their informative poster. Cooperative Teaching Plan: Library Media Specialist Will: Create a pathfinder of resources to help guide students in their research. This could include museum Web sites, online databases, and/or books. The LMS will also introduce students to these resources, modeling how to search and emphasizing the importance of citing sources. The LMS proposed conducting a mini-lesson on intellectual property (considering that students were copying original artwork), but the teacher did not want that.

Teacher(s) Will: Provide introductory lessons on influences and take students on a field trip to the National Gallery. She also will provide details on their final product, assist with students during the research process, and assess whether they have conducted enough research by examining their notes on a graphic organizer.

Resources: Web sites, print materials, and/or online databases (to be determined). The teacher requires that the resources include images. Many sites are blocked by DCPS, sot that will be an issue to consider. The lesson will be taught in the classroom, and students

will use laptops.

Learning Product: Students will create an original piece of art, inspired by their selected artist and that reflects the research they have conducted into the artists life an influences. They will also write a short summary of the artist and his/her influences.

Assessment Overview: Check-ins will be used to assess how well students are able to research independently; a citation sheet will be required and used to determine whether students conducted research from authoritative sources. The citations will be graded by the teacher.

Adaptations and Extensions: Students will have direct instruction on conducting searches within pre-selected resources, guiding the process for students who need extra help. Individual help will be provided to students during their research process. Students who need more of a challenge could create a detailed informational poster about their artist along with the original artwork.
