Skills Lab Teaching Plan Week 8: Intravenous Therapy Objective Upon completion of the lab, the student will

be able to o demonstrate the appropriate way to change the IV solution container and tubing; o verbalize what to assess when checking an IV site; o appropriately change an IV site dressing using medical asepsis; o verbalize appropriate technique for capping an infusion line and converting it to a saline/heparin lock; o verbalize the care of a PICC line; o document appropriately. Corresponding Chapter(s): Taylors Clinical Nursing Skills, Chapter 15 Lecture Outline o Review various IV solutions and why they are used. o Discuss the various tubing used to hang IVs and the different drip factors used. (include micro drip and volume control sets) o Review the different parts of the tubing. o Discuss the assessments necessary when checking an IV site: o Signs and symptoms of phlebitis o Signs and symptoms of infiltration o Review a formula for regulating an IV infusion rate. o Review the importance of the IV dressing change. o Teach why the primary IV line may be capped. o Review guidelines for caring for a PICC line: o Sterile technique o Agency policy for mask o Agency policy for changing caps o Line flush policy o Teach how to document IV intake. SKILL Skill 15-2: Changing IV Solution and Tubing TEACHING GUIDELINES Check the IV solution against the provider orders for accuracy. Check new container for any leaks or floaters. Correct labeling for IV solution container. Review 5 rights for administering medications. Spike the bag using sterile technique. Appropriate documentation. When priming the IV administration tubing, turn ports upside down to prevent air pockets in the tubing. Tap out any air bubbles in the tubing. Re-cap tubing until ready to attach to IV site. Frequent assessment of IV site critical for proper IV infusion and maintenance. Placing a time strip on the IV solution will enable quick and efficient assessment on a regular basis. Review medical asepsis for removing old dressing, cleansing the entry site, and applying the sterile dressing. Make sure IV catheter is stabilized during the procedure. Loop and anchor the tubing with tape. Discuss use of saline and heparin(various strengths) for flush. Medical asepsis
