Flexible - Online New Zealand Diploma in Business Level 6 2010

School of Business and Computer Technology Study online to gain a nationally recognised qualification giving you a practical introduction to the fundamentals of small business, marketing, management and other business skills. Now you can study at your own pace in your own time and have the advantage of networking with others sharing the same goal. This is a national qualification accredited by the NZ Qualifications Authority and supported all major employer groups. It is also an approved NZICA pathway to becoming an Accounting Technician.

Graduating students are work-ready for a variety of careers in areas including accountancy, management, finance, banking, government departments, insurance, hotel management, adult teaching or human resource management. Alternatively, students who have completed courses on the NZ Diploma in Business programme may cross-credit up to 165 credits to the NMIT Bachelor of Commerce degree. This qualification is an excellent opportunity to apply your own business experience and knowledge into studies and networking in the local community. Who is it for?

The New Zealand Diploma of Business is for those wishing to study flexibly online to gain a nationally recognised qualification that gives a practical introduction to the fundamentals of small business, marketing, management and other business skills. It can be studied as whole qualification or as single papers which correspond to your particular skill needs. Please be aware there will be a compulsory on campus (Nelson and Blenheim) mid-semester and end of semester final exam; times and dates to be confirmed by the School of Business.

How it works

There are no classes to attend; your course is available to you 24/7. The material is available online so all you need is a computer and access to the Internet (broadband preferable) and is supported by an orientation. Study on your terms where and when you like! Some courses offer workshops which are not compulsory but highly recommended. There may be required attendance at final exams. How long will it take?


The New Zealand Diploma in Business delivered by NMIT is a 12 course qualification. As a full time student studying 3 papers a semester the qualification will take 2 years to complete. A part time student can study at his or her own pace tailoring their own study plan.

Fees & Costs

The New Zealand Diploma of Business (Level 6) tuition fee per course is $499 including GST. Additionally Student Association Fees of approximately $19.70 applies for each course.

SANITI

In 2002, students at NMIT voted in a referendum for a compulsory Students Association, known as SANITI (Student Association of Nelson-Marlborough Institute of Technology Incorporated).

Entry Requirements

To be accepted for the NZ Diploma in Business programme, an applicant must have obtained at least the standard of the following: Academic Requirements Applicants under 20 years old:

a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at level one or higher in Mathematics or Pangarau on the National Qualifications Framework fifty credits at level two or above with at least 12 credits in each of three subjects including a minimum of eight literacy credits at level two or higher in English or te reo Mori; four credits must be in reading and four credits must be in writing. The literacy credits will be selected from a schedule of approved achievement standards and unit standards

or equivalent to both the above Applicants 20 years of age or over There are no minimum academic requirements
English Language Requirements

All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at this level. Those applicants whose first language is not English should have: An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic score of at least 6.0 issued within the last two years, with not less than 5.5 in any category. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 213 in the computer-based test, or at least 550 in the paper-based test, issued in the last two years. A qualification equivalent to the above.

Industry-Based Learning / Hands-On Experience

The NZ Diploma in Business is a combination of practical business and more theoretical conceptual skills. Its emphasis on applied knowledge and skill prepares you for a wide variety of worthwhile careers in business. The programme has a strong practical content so that students completing the programme will readily be able to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to set tasks.

The NZ Diploma in Business provides you with a solid foundation in general business related areas. Once core courses are completed, you have the opportunity to specialise in your chosen area of interest.

As a national qualification, the NZ Diploma in Business qualification is transportable all over New Zealand. You can start your qualification with NMIT and finish it at any number of tertiary institutes.

It is also a highly flexible and can be completed as a whole qualification or single or groups of courses can be chosen for specific areas of interest. Furthermore, both on-line and face to face modes of study are offered for most courses. By following a prescribed pathway it is also a recognised pathway to an Accounting Technician qualification.

Computer Requirements

The online courses are designed for students who are unable to attend lectures. . As classes utilise online learning systems, the suggested minimum computer requirements are: A reliable computer with up-to-date software An internet connection (preferably broadband) Microsoft Office suite including Word, Excel and Access (Office 2002 or more recent). Pre-requisites for Courses


Entry into a course is subject to entry requirements including pre-requisites being met. The course descriptor for each course includes the entry requirements for that course including pre requisites.

A pre-requisite is a course which normally must be passed, credited or exempted before a person may enrol in a specified course.

Forms of Assessment

Depending on the courses chosen, assessments can include tests, final exams, essays, assignments, written coursework, reports, research projects, controlled assignments, portfolios, simulations, case studies, literature reviews, group assessments, tutorial papers or project management. These assessments are most commonly submitted online. It is important to check attendance requirements for each specific course, see page 7 Courses Offered Semester 2 2010.

Recognition of Academic Credit

Students may apply to have relevant experience or qualifications recognised as academic credit for courses within this programme. Methods of recognition include Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Cross-Credit. Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology 9

Applications for recognition of academic credit should be made through the Online Programme Coordinator. No fees apply to cross credits but an RPL fee is charged for each course. Please contact the School of Business and Computer Technology for further information. Recognition of Prior Learning Recognition of Prior Learning is the application of credit towards a qualification awarded following formal appraisal of prior learning in respect of learning arising from life experience, work experience, informal and/or formal education or training. Cross Credit Cross-Credit is the application of academic credit of a course towards an NMIT qualification, of a course already completed as part of another approved qualification that covers the same learning outcomes as the NMIT course and is at the same academic level. Courses that are run face to face and can be cross credited in this manner.

Students may receive up to ten cross credits from the following list towards a completed NZ Diploma in Business from the Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Information Technology. FAQs
Can I study this programme part time? The New Zealand Diploma in Business can be completed by doing as little as 1 or 2 courses each semester. Can I study just the papers I am interested in without completing the qualification? Yes, courses can be done separately. You can choose courses that are relevant to your own development without having to complete the qualification.

What happens if I am sick or unable to do an exam or complete an assignment? You must apply for an extension for assignments from the tutor otherwise significant penalties apply. If you are unable to complete an assignment or exam you can apply for an aegrotat pass for up to 60% of a courses total assessment or the final exam with a medical certificate.

Are there tests? As each course varies in its assessments it is important to check specific course information in your course outlines. In most cases there are tests and final exams which are compulsory and must be sat on campus. What do I get at the end?

If you are successful in achieving all of the course outcomes you will obtain a New Zealand Diploma in Business When do the fees have to be paid? Your enrolment fees have to be paid before the start date of the course. Do I have to attend workshops? Workshops are not compulsory but are strongly recommended. In many cases the workshop can be revision for a test which is sat in the afternoon. Will there be an orientation? Yes, at the orientation you will be introduced to the software and structure of the courses as well as meeting your tutor and fellow students. You can either do this face to face on campus or online. This will give you a good kick start to the course. How much time do I get to complete a course? Courses have a start date and an end date. There is a schedule which indicates when certain points in the course should have been reached and other assessments submitted.

What if I change my mind about studying or want to change to another programme? You can withdraw from a course within 3 weeks of commencement and receive a full refund. After this time, but before 60% of a course is completed, you can withdraw without refund and the course will not appear on your academic record as a fail. You can not withdraw after 60% of the course has been completed. There is an administration fee of $100.00. Can I get credits towards a course if I have studied it at another institution? You can get credits for NZDipBus courses completed at other approved and accredited NZDipBus providers. You can also apply for cross credits for whole courses where you have previously completed an equivalent course under another programme e.g. Bachelor of Commerce., covering at least 80% of the learning outcomes at the same level at NMIT or another approved provider. Can I get a student loan or allowance? NZ students studying the equivalent of 80% or more fulltime on an NMIT programme usually qualify for a student loan. Usually this is three DipBus courses per semester. Entitlement to allowances depends on your personal circumstances. You should discuss your entitlement directly with Studylink.

Students attending a full time programme of 12 weeks or more and who are 18 years or over can test their eligibility for Student Allowance. Some 16 or 17 year olds may also qualify but there are certain conditions they must meet. Student Loans This is a government loan which you repay through Inland Revenue when you start working. The amount you can borrow includes: course fees, living costs, courses resources and loan administration fee. The LLC provides a range of services to support students studying by distance or who live at a distance from campus. Our lending service You may borrow up to 12 items at once Books are issued for 3 weeks We courier material to you and provide a courier bag for return of library materials - pack them carefully! You may renew items once by phone, email or on MyLibrary on the LLC website using your library logon and password.

Subject / Information Requests If you cannot locate specific material for an assignment, or want us to help you to locate relevant material, make a subject request. This may be done by phone, email or fax, or by completing the Information Request form on the LLC web page, under Ask Us Make sure that you have read the assignment carefully and are clear about the information that you need. Think about the format of material, how recent it needs to be, as well as the type of information you want. Tell us who you are (include your student ID no.) and where you want material sent. Allow 2-3 days for the delivery of material. We will send your requested items within 1 working day, and process subject requests within 3 working days.

The Catalogue and web pages Use the catalogue to find out what is available in the LLC. It will tell you what we have, where the item is, its classification number (how to find it on the shelf) and whether the item is on loan. It also includes online resources. You can limit your search to: Material held at a specific branch Format of material (eg book, video etc) Date of publication/ author/ title etc. From the LLC website you can access Online Resources to find a range of research databases. These provide access to journal and newspaper articles (many in full-text), online encyclopaedias and other research information in a range of subject areas. Tip sheets are available online for most of these resources. Contact us if you need further assistance with them.

When you are off-campus you will need to use your library log-in to access these resources. The LLC web pages also include information about the LLC, recommended web sites and Subject Guides which provide information about accessing and using information resources in your subject area.

Withdrawals and Refunds

Enrolled students should contact their school administrator immediately if they are planning to withdraw onto another programme or course. Withdrawals To withdraw from a course or programme, you will need to complete and sign a Withdrawal Application form and return it to the School Administration office for consideration. You must notify StudyLink if you are receiving a Student Loan or student Allowance. Refunds

In all cases the date of withdrawal from a course will be the date the Withdrawal Application form is received by the School Administration office.

A refund of course fees will only be considered if a Withdrawal / Refund Application form has been completed, signed and submitted no later than three weeks after the start of the course.

Appendix i. Course Descriptors NZDipbus 400 Accounting Principles 20 credits Pre-requisite:None The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of financial statements and reports and to enable them to analyse and interpret business performance.

NZDipbus 430 Quantitative Business Methods 20 credits Pre-requisite: None (some mathematical skills would be advantageous assumes prior knowledge of NCEA Level 2 mathematics The purpose of this course is to provide for the study of: Statistical data analysis involving the collection, analysis and interpretation of data from business and information sources. PC Infos and a statistical package such as Minitab or SPSS, or the statistical application of a spreadsheet package such as Excel. The mathematics of finance including the use of a spreadsheet package such as Excel.

Students will record and process financial transactions and prepare financial statements and cash budgets for entities in accordance with current accounting practices.
