Coronary Heart Disease is specific type of Atherosclerosis Diseases in which plaque builds up inside coronary arteries, narrowing the passage Proves harmful because these arteries are used to supply oxygen-rich blood to heart muscle This plaque is made up of cholesterol, fat and calcium Atherosclerosis can affect any artery in the body, not just the heart like CHD eg. arteries in the kidney, brain, heart, pelvis When an atheroma ruptures, blood clots can form which can trigger a heart attack or stroke More common in men than women Due to protection against the effects of the disease provided by estrogen As age increases, arteries become harder, the disease is most common with people over age of 40

The following increase your risk of getting Atherosclerosis: Smoking, fatty diet, obesity, type 1 or type 2 diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol Treatments try to prevent the disease from worsening where it could cause cardiovascular disease like a heart attack Surgery can be required to widen a section of a blocked artery
Other medications are available that are pointed directly at lowering blood pressure and cholesterol Long term treatments would include lifestyle changes, eg. Increased exercise and a healthier diet
Background information
Researchers have run studies to determine how far Atherosclerosis dates back. They found that out of 137 mummies from Egypt, Peru, the ancestral Puebloans of Southwest America and Unangan of the Aleutian Islands: 34% showed evidence of Atherosclerosis- occurring in Aorta, femoral arteries and coronary arteries.
